  1. Why this website after registration not editing my profile section. directly asking me for introduction about your self. pls all reader give me answer.
  2. Hi all, I'd like some thoughts on my current situation. I'm currently a senior math major, and up until a few months back, I'd been pretty much dead set on attending grad school in pure math. This past summer, however, I interned at a trading firm ended up leaving with a pretty serious interest in financial markets. I'm still looking at math grad schools, but mainly towards the more applied side (i.e. programs that'll give me the chance to take more coursework and conduct research in derivatives pricing). I also started looking into Econ PhD programs that'll give me the chance to do markets-oriented research. My main question is: will Econ programs give me serious consideration with essentially zero undergraduate economics coursework? If not, would the recommended course of action be to go for an Econ MA/MS, or work for a few years in something like a fed/similar RA or econ consulting job? Profile's below, to give a better picture of where I'm at. Type of Undergrad: BA Mathematics, USNews T10 Undergrad GPA: 3.8. Avg 3.91 across Soph+Jr years, had some issues as a freshman. Should be ~3.85 at grad. GRE: Taking this fall. Math Courses: Calc II/III, DiffEq, Linear Algebra, Intro to Proofs, Abstract Algebra (yearlong sequence), Galois Theory, Number Theory, Real Analysis (yearlong sequence), Complex Analysis, Probability Theory (yearlong sequence), Differential Geometry, Advanced Linear Algebra. Generally A/A- grades, with with a B- linear algebra from my freshman year. Econ Courses: Intermediate micro (B, from freshman year). AP credit for intro micro/macro. Haven't taken an Econ class in 2.5 years. Other Courses: Intro to CompSci, OOP, Data Structs & Algorithms, assorted physics courses. Letters of Recommendation: Two from math instructors/research supervisors, one from a physics instructor. Research Experience: Three years research, all in math and physics. Teaching Experience: Tutor for Calc I/II/III, linear algebra, physics mechanics, and electricity & magnetism through school's tutoring program. I'd appreciate any feedback to whether Econ programs are even a realistic goal at this point (and how I can improve my profile), or if I should just drill down on the applied math programs and go from there. Thanks!
  3. Hello everyone, Does anyone have any advice about whether or not it's a good idea to add a 4th referee for the universities that give you the option? I know that Duke recommends that you don't unless you really feel it's necessary which is fair enough, but others like Chicago, Cornell and Brown give you the option of adding up to 5 referees and don't seem to recommend against it. Is it likely to be an advantage to provide 4 referees for schools like Chicago etc, or is it definitely better to stick to 3 for all of them? Many thanks.
  4. Guys I can't believe I'm writing this, because even disregarding the two wait lists I am on I got some offers I would be thrilled to take. But, due to some purely personal factors it looks like I might have to give up on going to a program this fall. If this happens, I don't want to give up on my dream and I plan to reapply in 2 years and I'm furiously trying to set up a backup plan in the meantime. I would be moving to a major East coast city, which I guess is lucky given the prevalence of universities there. I guess my two options if I still want to do my PhD are: 1) Get an RA position -- this would possibly increase my competitiveness, right? Easier said than done, though, particularly given my relatively weak programming skills and lack of formal training. 2) Get a consulting job -- I assume this would more or less maintain my current level of competitiveness (my letter writers will all stand by me just as strongly in two years, I've talked to them and I go to a tiny school) And, regardless, I guess try to take some math classes. Does anyone have any advice for me? What else can I do to maintain or increase competitiveness? My nightmare is that I have to decline my offers, don't line up EITHER of these two options, and then my window of opportunity is closed forever.
  5. As an incoming Phd student this fall I was wondering if any of the current PhD students on this forum could give an insight into what their 1st year was like, as well as any tips/advice based on your own experiences? I understand the first year is coursework heavy but is it wise to dip your toe in some research early on? How did you find prelims, etc.... Any feedback would be helpful
  6. Hi, I just get started studying for TOEFL. I'm wondering if some one can help me or give me ideas for studying TOEFL effectively. Also I'm looking for people who can study with me:loveheart: Tina
  7. I have been looking for an internship ..i have the internship certificate but no pharmacy is hiring.can somebody give me tips or advice or help
  8. I am lucky enough to be accepted to both programs. However, I am confused as to which one I should choose. I am going to visit both departments in the near future. However, I would really appreciate if you or your friends could who go to one of these schools can give me some insights into each respective department. I know that rank-wise, UIUC is higher. However, ND's close tie between students and faculty members intrigued me as well.
  9. Hello everyone! Prospective applicant for fall here (Economics)! I was seeking advice regarding my internship experience: I have interned for three months in investment banking (M&A) and a summer at a well-known International Organization. Neither experience is much research-oriented and I have been (ill?)advised to hide them both from my CV - so that my path doesn't appear inconsistent/I don't give negative signals regarding my focus. What do you think? Any advice on how to best present these experiences in CV/SOP? Many thanks
