  1. Hi there! I am currently finishing up my first round of application deadlines, and I was wondering what y’all think about some of the common requirements. 1) CV/Resume: How long is yours? How much detail do y’all go into? Do you include “unrelated” things like internships not in Econ/finance/data? 2) Statement of Purpose: How do you avoid simply rehashing things on your resume? What have y’all prioritized including? How much do you spend talking about your past (experiences, research, coursework) vs your future (why that program, what you want to focus your research on, career goals)? 3) Personal Statement: For schools requiring another statement, how are y’all using it? Are you using it to discuss something you didn’t have room for in your SOP, something personal about you (I.e. life-changing experience, “light bulb moment”, etc), or something else entirely? Obviously no need to answer all of the questions! I was just curious what your thoughts were about some things I’ve been thinking about throughout this process. Best of luck, everyone!

  3. Hello, I am new here in order to keep up to date on information pertaining to the economics Ph.D. application cycle this year. Do we think this will improve or hurt my level of anxiety?? Cheers!
  4. Hi! I have found these three rankings but I'm not sure which one is best: 1. Tilburg University: Tilburg University Economics Ranking - Tilburg University 2. IDEAS: Economic Institution Rankings | IDEAS/RePEc 3. QS: Economics & Econometrics | Top Universities Additional, I have two main questions: 1. What is the best ranking for top economic grad schools? 2. Are there rankings of economic grad schools for each research area of economics (I mean rankings in macro, micro, econometrics, development, etc.)? If not, how can I know which ones are the best grad programs in economics in my research area of interest? Thanks!
  5. I am hoping to draw on urch's collective wisdom to construct a Top10 or Top20 list of strategy phd programs that are more quantitative/econ-heavy in nature. I was able to find three strong programs, based on a review of course requirements for students, faculty research, and job market placements: UCLA Strategy Toronto Rotman Strategic Management Duke Fuqua Strategy Can I get your opinion on the three programs above? Would you say all of them are Top10 among strategy programs that take a quant/econ approach? How do they fare among strategy programs more generally? I have only identified three programs so far. Can you help me expand this list? I would like to end up with a Top10 or Top20 list if possible.
  6. Okay, I'm letting my anxiety get the best of me because I've now applied to all 17 programs I'm going to apply to and I know that nothing here is going to make a difference... but I'm basically thinking about my prospects non stop, so I want to see what this community thinks my chances are. PROFILE: I am a senior in my undergrad at a pretty small and, to be honest, kind of mediocre liberal arts school. I am wanting to go into a PhD Econ program in fall 2019. Type of Undergrad: Dual major in mathematics and economics Undergrad GPA: 3.94 overall, 4.0 in economics, ~3.9 in mathematics GRE: Q 169, V 167, A 5.5 (96th %, 98th%, 98th %) Math Courses: Calc I (A), Calc II (A-), Calc III (A), Intro to Proofs/Number Theory (B), Diff Eq (A), Probability and Statistics I (A), Probability and Statistics II (A), currently in linear algebra (A), mathematical modeling (A), and abstract algebra (A) and I will be taking real analysis this spring. I wish I had been able to do RA before, but given my schools size and being a double major it wasn't possible. Luckily, one of my letter writers is teaching the RA course and he said he is going to mention it in the letter (and that he expects me to do well -- me and him are close and I've done well in three classes with him) Econ Courses: Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A), Game Theory (A), Environmental Econ (A), currently in History of Economic Thought (A) and doing my senior seminar capstone project. Other Courses: Just standard general eds (all of which I have gotten As in) Letters of Recommendation: The first is from the chair of the econ department, who has been my adviser and also my boss (I work for his consulting practice). He (completely on his own) showed me the letter he wrote, and I was stunned at how complimentary it is about my character, work ethic, academic ability, and research skills. He places me in top 3 students he's taught over his 35 years. Second letter is from my thesis adviser; I've been working on this project with him for months before the seminar even began, I am doing another research project with him next semester that we've been planning out, and I think he's writing a good letter for me. Third is from a math professor (I thought it would be good to have one math professor in the mix) who I am currently taking my third class from. I've gotten As in all of these, and I go see him a lot outside of class to talk about things, and I know he's writing me a really good letter that places me in the top of the classes he's taught. Research Experience: No academic research jobs, or published papers -- one of the drawbacks of having gone to a small school is there really aren't RA opportunities. But, I have written several papers on the Greek debt crisis and the structure of the eurozone (intermediate macro, game theory, and now in my seminar) and I intend to research similar topics going forward so I think all those tell a research "story." I also have two years of experience as a research assistant for my professor's economic consulting practice-- it's not academic research, I know, but better than nothing. Teaching Experience: I just started a job teaching standardized test prep classes, but I'm not sure that really counts for anything. None other than that. Again, no TAing opportunities at my school. Research Interests: monetary economics, macroeconomics, debt crises and currency unions SOP: Vetted by several professors, I feel confident in it. I spell out the research I've done, am doing for my seminar, and an independent research project (for course credit) I am undertaking next semester, and outline some directions I want to go in grad school. I feel good about it. Other: I've gotten mixed advice on my prospects. I've got some things very much going for me: GRE scores, GPA, strong letters of recommendation, a strong math background, and a good SOP. That said, my current school is not well known or highly ranked. I also have a nontraditional academic history-- I spent a year in college after I graduated high school, did well but not stellar, and left (in good standing) for personal reasons. I worked for two years before deciding I wanted to go to school and end up in a PhD program, which is how I got to where I am now. I'm hoping schools can see that whole story, and my one professor talks about it in his LOR, but I know at some schools they might not like that. I tried to apply to a safe range of schools. Three of them I know I will almost definitely get rejected, but I thought "why not": Stanford, Columbia, and Harvard. Another batch are only slightly less competitive: Brown, U of Wisconsin, U of Michigan, U of Minnesota, Johns Hopkins, UT Austin, Maryland. I then applied to some that seemed a little bit safer: USC, University of Pittsburgh, University of Oregon, University of Washington, University of Illinois at Chicago, Stony Brook, and Tulane. Sorry if this is too long, but I would really really love anyone's input. What do you think? Will I get in with funding *somewhere*? EDIT: Because my school is small, we haven't sent a ton of people to econ PhD programs so the sample size is small. But, students have in the past gone on to funded programs at University of Oregon, University of Maryland, University of Virginia, University of Arizona. SECOND EDIT: Took of all the bold typeface to make this more readable :)
  7. "If rituals did not exist, we would have to invent them. We need ceremonies and rituals to help us define ourselves socially and culturally." The topic suggests that humankind needs ceremonies and rituals to help define themselves socially and culturally. Now this may be true to a certain extent, but most rituals, I believe, are a burden on society, considering the monoply reiligious organizations have over them. We can easily organize functions as per our wish and not be worried about offending someone. It is not a tough task to organize an event, be it religious or social, as per our liking. In order to bring some structure to the event, we can simply plan ahead and hold certain functions that may appeal to those participating in it; we can play it by ear. And before you know it, the structure of functions done well, whether a house party or a welcome event, may soon become rigid, turning into a ritual. This happens when we try to repeat past successes and follow old practices to the T. This has been the case with religious practices. For instance, the rituals which had some meaning and served a distinct purpose hundreds of years ago, are still mindlessly repeated. And if somebody dares breaking with the ancient practices, there is a furore! The guardians of religion, especially in Sikhism, Hinduism or Islam, are inflicting the greatest harm to it; these regressive, uneducated men follow old customs without putting any thought into them. If at all, we need rituals and ceremonies, they should change with the times. For instance, earlier, the Sikh grooms would carry a sword while going to the bride’s house during the wedding so he can protect her on their way back because in those days, crime was rife and dacoits would often attack a wedding procession, rob the bride before kidnapping and eventually raping her. However, in today’s time when crime is low and processions go on motorised vehicles, there is no need for the groom to carry the weapon. It may be true that rituals give one a sense of connection with history and provide structure to ceremonies. But we don’t necessarily need them. These should not be compulsory. Therefore, there is no need for rituals; one can always be one with one’s roots by establishing their own rituals.
  8. Hi all, I am considering between these 3 schools, hope you can help me with. 1/ Rutgers: MS in Statistics and Biostatistics. A great school and program with good placements and the thesis option. MS students can transfer into PhD 2/ Case Western Reserve: MS in Biostatistics. Very well ranked university, particularly in Ohio. Can't find any historical placements. MS students can transfer into PhD 3/ South Carolina: MS in Statistics (cannot compare to the above 2 in every aspect, the reason I am considering this school because I got the teaching assistantship) My most concern is finding the job in US after graduation, regardless of the field. The ability to transfer to PhD is also important, in case the plan of finding the job does not work out and I can save 2 years of course work. I am extremely lucky that the tuition is not a problem. My favorite school right now is Rutgers but I really appreciate any advice, especially from the above programs' alumni. Is there anyone who transferred directly from MS in Stat/Biostat at Rutgers/CWRU to their PhD? Thank you very much in advance.
  9. Just finished taking the GRE: 155v-——148q. I was a biology major, though I'm excited to be switching over to psychology for graduate school. I was wondering if anyone knew any good sources to study, seeing that most books are outdated due to the DSM V being released in 2013. The next edition by Kaplan is being released in June and the other publishers have bad ratings... Thanks in advance!
  10. I went through a pretty long process of applying to grad schools, waiting for decisions, deciding between my options, feeling like i wasn't ready for grad school/didn't deserve to go (imposter syndrome, yo), re-sparking my interest, realizing i was capable after all, getting ready to go, and then after all that was over i ended up falling sick. Sick as in something i have been to the hospital for, and not sick as in a prolonged flu. I'm working on managing the illness with my doc but it's a bit unsure now whether i'll be well enough to start school in the fall. In either scenario (being well enough to start or too ill to even attend), i certainly won't be at 100% starting off grad school and now i'm starting to panic about what i should do. On the one hand, I'm reluctant to postpone my program, having to go through applications all over again and feeling like i'll be wasting not only next year by delaying, but also feeling like the entire struggle of this year was for nothing. On the other hand i'm scared of starting when still ill, or when i'm still in the process of recovering (this sort of thing takes a few months to clear up at minimum usually), and then trying the program but having to leave partway through because it makes my illness worse or my illness would obstruct me from being able to do full time work (part time isn't an option for this program). You hear about people falling sick during their grad programs due to stress and other issues, and if i'm starting off ill i can only imagine having it go downhill from there. I'm being advised by the doc to take some time off, but it's not like i can just start in a later semester, i'd have to postpone by a whole year. Has anyone been in a position like this before, where they'll potentially have to delay/cancel grad school before even starting? I don't even know how i'd approach my profs about getting reference letters all over again for reapplying...
  11. Hi, I'm currently a sophomore at a small liberal arts college in California, and I am seriously considering going to LSE, or Oxbridge, for grad school. I have a great passion for economics, public policy, politics, international relations and history. I am a double major in Economics and International Relations with a minor in Math, with a GPA of 3.6 expected after this semester (3 semesters so far). I've had an internship in Congress between my freshman and sophomore year, and am planning on doing research this summer. So ultimately, my question is, what GPA and GRE scores do I need to get into Oxbridge or LSE for grad school? Do they favor American applicants? (I have EU citizenship, does that help?). Thanks in advance. P.S. I also have a strong upward trend. GPA: 3.0 first semester freshman year 3.85 second semester freshman year 3.93 first semester sophomore year (expected) How much would this help?

  13. Hey current and recent grad students, I'm trying to creep out from mostly lurking around here for a while. My question is asked as a quite older student (with a family and a job/current career) who is finishing a previously abandoned undergrad degree and gearing up to apply to econ and a few pp PhD programs this December. I'm guessing/hoping I can just manage admission into a 25-50 econ program or a pretty good policy one with a touch of luck. I will post a profile soon enough and see a bit more about that I suppose, but I am in some relatively heavy resumé building right now. I would love to hear from you members just a bit about how their study habits were as undergrads and how they became as grad students. I will be significantly minimizing or discontinuing active involvement in a small business I run currently upon beginning grad studies and I am mulling over the potential time required in grad school versus what I have gotten in the habit of over the last 2.5 years finishing undergrad. This basically boils down to the following: For the last three semesters at a non-flagship state school with a pretty good micro program (by most accounts. PhD generally top 50-60). I have done fairly good work as an undergrad (a few Bs and a dozen or more As, Honors College, Deans List). Generally I am working about 20-24 hrs./wk and attending school/studying about 30-35 hrs/wk. I'm heading into the heavier math next semester. Last semester I did 13 hrs including MV calc and became a father while keeping up with some attenuated responsibilities at work, got 3 As and a B (though mv calc was the B. Boo.). This semester I am sharing parenting duties, doing the work thing and taking Intro to proofs along with a grad-ish level Game Theory class, as well as some grad-level research assistant credit. I am guessing that taking Linear Algebra and Analysis while keeping a 24-ish hr/wk job going next fall will be a reasonable warm up for grad school, but what do I know? I am a hard worker at math but not a natural. So tell me, can one be a pretty disciplined studier for about 50-60 hrs./wk in grad school and do well in your various opinions? I have read up some of the well-written guides and testimonials, but they usually steer clear of such minutiae. I want to feel out the normal distribution of studying among surviving/thriving grad students. Thanks in advance all!
  14. Hi everyone :) I'm an undergraduate econ major student who will be applying for PhD in economics soon. I'm quite math/stat oriented, so I guess in grad school the direction I'll be focused on would econometrics. I've also done a research in nonparametric statistics with a professor, and expecting a working paper to come out soon. However I'm not quite sure what schools I should be applying for, since econometrics seems to be a quite distinct division from other branches in economics. Would it be reliable if I just look at the rankings for economics programs? Is there a ranking out there specifically for econometrics? I also heard that most statistics done in econometrics is more focused on parametrics and models, but the topic I am interested in is non-parametrics (as can be seen from the research I did in undergraduare). So I'm curious what are some schools with strong nonparametric econometrics in particular? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
  15. Hello, I'm going to be a senior this upcoming academic year and was looking into PhD programs. I have researched many economics, marketing, decision science, etc. programs and all of them seem to fit my interests a little bit but I am not sure which would be the best fit. My research interest is explaining the causes of obesity--specifically, applying the economic model to answering such questions in terms of effect of obesity on changes of income, the decision of whether or not to exercise, the effect of a tax on unhealthy foods, etc. However, I am more interested in applied work than I am developing theory--i.e. I enjoy statistics more than I do mathematics. If any of you could at least recommend a suitable field, let alone one from a specific university that would be suitable, I would be much obliged. Here's my profile: Undergrad: University ranked in 90-100 Undergrad GPA: 3.86 Math Courses: Calc I: B+, Calc II: A, Multivariate: B+, Elementary Number Theory: A- [taking DiffEQs and Linear Algebra this semester--plan to take Real Analysis next semester if necessary] Econ Courses: Intro to Micro: A, Intro to Macro: A, Intermediate Micro: B+ (studied abroad--taken at top 100 university in the world); History of Economic Thought: B (same story as previous); Intermediate Macro: A; Labor Economics: A I am taking econometrics, international economics, and economics of development this semester. Statistics: Business Statistics: A, Introduction to Statistics (calculus based): A Honor Societies: Member of National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Sigma Nu (national Jesuit honor society--only 4% of graduating class inducted) I haven't taken the GRE yet because I planned to work for a few years while studying for the GRE so I can focus on schoolwork.
  16. There is this popular blog on disadvantages of grad school: 100 Reasons NOT to Go to Graduate School However, its focus is on the humanities and social sciences. My question is how relevant and realistic are these reasons with respect to PhD in Economics and PhD in Business? Are most problems the same or is it a completely different story?

  18. Do any of you have any links to good Econ lecture notes or youtube videos? I need to add more content to my site: UndergradEcon.com - Dedicated to Undergrad Econ Majors p.s. I don't make money off the site, i.e. no ads or nothing. The site is just a side project for fun. So if you have any content to add i'd appreciate it.
  19. Hello, I know this topic has been beaten to death but I need some advice on choosing classes to salvage my future- I'd appreciate any help from someone more experienced than I. My situation: I recently swtiched from reguler old Business to Honors Economics (w/ thesis) for my 3rd year. To say the least, I have totally screwed my chances of getting into a Ph.D. So now I'm gunning for a MA from a high ranked University. I attend a pretty low ranked school in Canada. Based on the situation here, I've got to fit 18 Economics classes in the remaining 25 classes I have left, which is going to be a challenge. I know that for grad school most people suggest taking copious amounts of math, but it looks like all I will be able to fit into my schedule are: 1) 1st Year Calculus sequence 2) 1 Course in Linear Algebra 2) 1 Course in multivariable Calculus 3)1 course in Introductory Analysis 3) Mathematics for Economists (This is an Econ class- the textbook is fundamentals of Mathematical Economics) 4) 1 Course in Calculus based Introductory Statistics 5) 1 course in introductory stats focusing on Regression Analysis 6) 2 courses in Econometrics (this is an Econ class) 7)Possibly classical game theory or Methods for Ordinary Diff. Eqs (whichever is better) The rest of my classes would be Economics classes/ general requirements. Does anyone think that the above profile, mathematically, would be enough to get into some half decent MA, ceritis paribus? Thanks for your time. Any other advice would be largely appreciated.
  20. Hi everyone, I am a Computer Engineering major. GPA: 3.8 GRE: 1370 (790Q, 580V, AWA awaiting) Good internship and research..... Where do you guys think that I would have a chance getting in for MS? Also.... do you think that I should re-take the GRE? on my powerprep a week before I got a 1490..... So needless to say I was very disappointed with my results..... could be nerves. I would like to go to places in the range of GA Tech, VA Tech, Michigan, etc... Thanks!!!
  21. Hi all, I am a sophomore at Michigan State University and I am currently interested in pursuing a Masters in Applied Statistics. I know its kind of early but I want to make sure I go down the right path, so I was wondering what classes/tech gpa/gpa/gre scores it would take to get into a school for a Masters in Applied Statistics such as MSU or UMich. I am double majoring in Economics and Statistics, and would have a minor in math as well if it wasn't for the "unique credit" rule MSU has for the math minor. Technical Courses I will be taking over my four years: MTH 132 - CALC I MTH 133 - CALC II MTH 234 - CALC III MTH 309 - LINEAR ALGEBRA MTH 320 - REAL ANALYSIS I MTH 360 - THEORY OF MATHEMATICAL INTEREST MTH 4** - CONSIDERING EITHER REAL ANALYSIS II OR APPLIED LINEAR ALGEBRA STT 421 - STATISTICS I (NOT CALC BASED) STT 422 - STATISTICS II (NOT CALC BASED) STT 441 - STATS AND PROB I (CALC III PREREQ) STT 442 - STATS AND PROB II (CALC III PREREQ) STT 455 - ACTUARIAL MODELS STT 461 - COMPUTATIONS EC 420 - INTRO TO ECONOMETRICS EC 421 - ADVANCE ECONOMETRICS EC 401 - ADVANCED MICRO 8 ECON CLASSES I'm wondering whether I need to take a different class schedule or if this looks pretty good. I'm also wondering if it depends more on your recent classes than your early classes. (i.e. If I get a 3.0 in Calc I but receive a 3.5 in Calc III and a 4.0 in Real Analysis, will the 3.0 kill me?)
