Worked as an RA for 2yrs during the school year for the econ professor. Did independent Market Microstrucure reseach with well known finance professor for 1 year. Both have said they will be happy to write very enthusiastic letters. 3rd LOR will likely be from the prof who taught my grad stochastic processes class. Despite getting a B+ I scored a 90% raw and will be taking the ML course with him next fall. Went to his office hours a lot and he knows about my plans. Research Experience: Worked as an RA with Econ professor for 2 years. Currently working on a paper with him. Wrote a lot of python code on my own and did statisitcal analysis in R. Independent research in market microstrucure with well known finance professor. Lots of python and SAS code for the finance research project. Wrote an independent paper for this work. Also worked as an RA for 1 year doing survey design related work. Research Interests: Finance, IO, Market Design, Micro-Economic Theory, Metrics Applying to: T20 US Econ + few Finance programs Concerns : Lack of publication and few Bs in relatively important math courses. I am hoping the letter from my math professor will rectify the latter but I wasn't sure. Other info: Graduating in December 2021. I have 2 summers of work experience as a SWE in a FAANG company.

I need some help deciding on who will write my LORs for my application cycle this fall. LOR 1: My master's program research project advisor and have taken an UG and grad class from her, and done well. LOR 2: My grad chair who taught a grad class I did well in. LOR 3: This is the tough one. I'm really leaning towards Option 2, but I've known Option 1 for a long-time and he was going to be my advisor, but due to his inability to commit I went with LOR 1 writer as my advisor. - Option 1: The professor who I thought I was going to get to RA with but ends up I cannot, and he is very distant from academic commitments in general, like helping supervise independent research and replying to emails. He is semi-respected though, as a micro-theorist, but probably not that well known. I have known him since 2010 and have been emailing and discussing research with him, even in person, since then, but he tends to always want to drop any long-term efforts. He has some idea of the kind of research I enjoy, but I'm not so sure he would want to put those ideas into writing on my LOR. I took grad micro from him and did well. - Option 2: The professor I now TA for, who also has appointments at Columbia and NYU as an adjunct professor. He has nominated me for TA of the Year and thinks pretty highly of my TA work, coming up with my own initiatives to help the 133 students improve their grades and maximize their learning. This semester is the first time I've met this professor. I have emailed him before about a now defunct research proposal I had and he gave me some pointers and said it was a good idea. Have never taken any of his classes. Would there be any reason to choose Option 1 for LOR 3?

Hi guys, Quick question: do you guys think there is a huge marginal difference between RAing for one year after college instead of 2? I saw that most RA job descriptions mention that they prefer if the applicant is available to RA for 2 years, but it seems like too much time. Will it impact my grad school admissions a lot if I decide that I only want to RA for a year? (think about top 5 admissions) By RAing for one year, I mean starting during the summer, applying during the winter, and leaving the job when the grad program starts the other year.

I’ve taken the PhD sequence in Micro and Metrics at my unranked university and received A’s. Textbooks were Greene and Wooldridge for Metrics and MWG for Micro. As for math, I’ve taken multivariate calculus, Linear Alg I-II, Diff Eq, Probability, Math Stats, Real Analysis I-II, Set Theory, Topology, and grad lebesgue theory. (A’s in all classes). For research, I've RA'ed for a few years with two professors and did a senior thesis on an empirical topic. I'm graduating with a B.S. in Mathematics and Economics. During my pre-doc RA stint at a Fed bank, I have the opportunity to take some courses at a T40 program. If you could pick two courses from below, what would you advise? My interests are in Micro and Metrics. Grad topology Grad functional analysis Grad complex analysis Measure theoretic probability Abstract Algebra PhD Micro I (again, but this time at a better institution) Other (something else)

First time poster, long time reader here. I am a junior and an international student at a top 15 undergrad program in the US (top 50 econ), and I started to prepare myself to apply to grad programs relatively early, and once I wanted to be competitive at the very top schools, I planned to have taken multiple Grad level courses by the time I apply in my senior year. Well, I had my final exam for Grad Micro I today and I ended up making a series of errors due to lack of sleep and not knowing when to take the hit and move on to the next question (no excuses, I could have prepared earlier/better, my fault) that dropped my course grade from 97% to 92% (A-) So, from what I have read here, an A- in Grad Micro I is not the end of the world (even though I am feeling like it is today), but it does not help me either. First, how affected were my chances at a Top 5 program? Is an A- something I need to make up for, or is it something that will simply not stand out and I need to work on other things? Also, I am still a junior, so I have 1 year until I apply. I was planning to take 5/6 math courses next Spring, and then take Grad Metrics/Macro + Senior thesis during the Fall of my senior year, but now I might consider taking Micro Theory II next Spring to make up for the A-. Any ideas on that? I will leave my standard profile below. Any thoughts/advice you can give me will be appreciated. PROFILE Type of Undergrad: US News Top 15 - Math and Econ Major Undergrad GPA: 3.93 GRE: N/A Math Courses: Calculus (I,II,III), Linear Algebra, ODE, Intro to Math Reasoning (A-), Scientific Computing, Real Analysis, Operations Research, Intro to Probability. Started talking about a senior thesis with another professor recently. Research Experience: RA for the above professors for 2 semesters and 2 summers. Teaching Experience: Math Grader if it counts

I had a serious injury my junior year that left me in a wheelchair and changed my priorities a bit. Theres a clear shift in my grades post-injury, so anyone looking at my transcript would easily notice the medical withdrawal, gap years, then mostly all As after. But Im worried that the cumulative GPA will be an automatic rejection in the first round of sorting/cutoffs at most schools. I'm applying for RA positions in the DMV area now, hoping to get some experience at the FRB or a think tank in the area to add to my application. I'm also taking math classes online through IU's CITL program, planning on having real analysis, differential equations, and a proof class or two done before applying. Maybe some statistics as well. Questions: 1) What type of schools should I target? 2) How irredeemable is the undergrad GPA? I've got some mitigating factors like the grades trending up post-injury, private sector work experience and professional license, and the graduate degrees but I'm not sure how much weight these carry. 3) Mostly, though: what can I do to improve my application? Is taking any extra math classes worth it? Or are grad econ classes more important?

I requested a profile evaluation before but quite a few details have changed and I figured that it would be useful to request one again. My profile has some glaring oddities because I went through a very strange period in my life between 2012-2014 as a youth - I, more or less, dropped out of a school I got into and pressed the reset button. If you think this may matter a lot, let me know. That would be very valuable and useful to me - may be necessary to get a MA then. I'm not worried or concerned about this now. Profile Ethnicity: URM/Latino Type of Undergrad: Economics/Math (statistics option) low-ranked public university - you haven't heard of it. GRE: Quant 163, Verbal 167 (I'm going to retake it, obviously, and I expect to do better - I'm a much stronger math student now than I was when I first took it.) Undergrad GPA (overall): 3.82 Undergrad GPA (institutional): 4.0 Undergrad GPA (math): 4.0 Math/Statistics Courses: Intro to Analysis (A), Stochastic Processes (A), Mathematical Statistics (A), Probability Theory (A), Linear Algebra (A), Statistical Learning (grad course, A), Cal Series (A in all courses), Differential Equations (A), Discrete Math (A), Number Theory (A), Economics: Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Labor Econ (A), Industrial Organization (A), International Economics (A), Money & Banking (A), Math for Economics (A, grad), Advanced Micro (A-, grad, took through program), Econometrics (A) Research Experience: I'll be working as a RA in the Federal Reserve system for two years. I'm not sure who will be writing my LORs from there but I will be working with some economists with PhDs from top-ranked programs. I know Stata/R and some Python. I'd say I'm very proficient in R. Research Interests: Labor, Household Finance, Econometrics, Public Policy Concerns/Questions: 1. I have no idea which schools I should target or which schools I could plausibly target. I last thought about graduate school ~9 months ago or so - I try not to think about such things when I'm "in the trenches", it produces unnecessary stress - and my profile was much weaker 9 months ago! As a result, I'm pretty clueless about my current profile. 2. I'm interested in profile-strengthening tips. I can take classes/courses on the side rather easily and, if I really go out of my way, from good universities. I'm interested in continuing my Math/Stats education (I don't feel satisfied yet and I love Math/Stats) while also gaining more exposure to graduate-level Economics. If you see a weakness or have a recommendation, I'd love to hear it, though I refuse to do something solely to get a LOR or an "in". 3. The big question relates to the MA - do you think it's necessary if I want to get into top 20 programs? I suspect that it is. I have no idea though.

I am a final year undergrad student looking forward to applying for PhD probably in 2022. I was wondering if taking grad math courses (grad Real Analysis - Hilbert space, grad Probability - measure based prob theory) would enhance my chances. I have taken most of the relevant math courses (analysis, real analysis, topology, stochastic processes, etc) and I think I would most probably get at least A's from the grad courses as well. If so, should I take them, or would it be a waste of time? Always thank you for great advice (btw, I am looking forward to studying financial economics)

Hi, I'm an Asian (non-Chinese) looking forward to applying for Finance PhD in around 2022. I have concerns regarding taking grad math courses. Would taking grad Probability (measure-based prob) and grad Real Analysis (Hilbert Space) be of any help in the application process? The concern is due to my sub-optimal grades. Please see my profile below for your reference. I'm also open to Econ PhDs. Test Scores: (GRE) 170/163/5.0 (Q/V/W) Undegrad GPA: CGPA: 4.0/4.5 (3.7/4.0 if A+,A=4.0, B+,B=3.0, etc.) from a regionally well-known Asian university, Econ major. Econ Classes (advanced): Econometrics II (time series), Empirical Analysis of Policies (DiD, Matching, etc.), Game Theory, Intermediate Metrics (IV, Probit, etc.) Math&Stats Classes: Calc I,II (II being multivariate), Lin Alg I,II, Analysis I,II, ODE, Probability, Mathematical Statistics, Stochastic Processes, Numerical Analysis; the following are being taken this semester: Topology I, Real Analysis (measure), Applied Math (deep learning). Mostly A+ or As, except for the following: Game Theory (B+), Industrial Org (B), ODE (B+), Numerical Analysis (B+) Research Experience: A few undergrad-level papers, but none significant. Work Experience: 6m intern at an Asian global IB (Research) 3m intern at a major global IB (Risk) Others: I will be enrolled in MA Econ from the same University starting next semester. I have a high chance of getting TA-ships and RA-ships, which could hopefully boost my chances. Concerns: Gauging from the above profile, would taking grad math courses help my application? (I am pretty confident I can get A's) Also, what else could I do besides writing good papers in my Masters? What would be the most probable target schools that I can aim for? Thank you in advance.

I've read a lot that people experience grad macro to be extremely conceptual and very foreign looking. I'm in undergrad currently and have taken macro and it also seems really conceptual. Where are the differences found in undergrad v. grad macro? We use Macroeconomics by Mankiw and have gotten to the point of just seeing the possibilities of DSGE models. Wondering how much more it could go into the weeds.

The GPA of my last semester in the UK is much better (68, 70 is the first-class), this is not because I worked harder but since my home Univ in Germany normally gives a 'C' grade. Of course, I'm not a top student per se but just an average one. I'm thinking of applying to UNH since my pre-application was approved by them and I am quite unsure if I can get a place in the programs listed above. Could you please leave any advice?

Hi! I have found these three rankings but I'm not sure which one is best: 1. Tilburg University: Tilburg University Economics Ranking - Tilburg University 2. IDEAS: Economic Institution Rankings | IDEAS/RePEc 3. QS: Economics & Econometrics | Top Universities Additional, I have two main questions: 1. What is the best ranking for top economic grad schools? 2. Are there rankings of economic grad schools for each research area of economics (I mean rankings in macro, micro, econometrics, development, etc.)? If not, how can I know which ones are the best grad programs in economics in my research area of interest? Thanks!

I am worried about the C in economics in financial markets. I feel that was just a prof who is very harsh with evaluation. I was really surprised that it happened. Are my GRE scores ok? Anything I can do to improve my chances?
