  1. The most important component of a society is the people who form it, nevertheless at the same time being influenced by the settings under which it forms. Rural and urban settings influence differences in a society in terms of the economic conditions and the way people lead their lives and interact with one another. In many parts of the world, villages are heavily dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry as the chief source of income and such activities usually thriving on the cooperation from a body of people working together. Thus, the bucolic pastoral villages often provides an insight to inter-human connections building up a society. It is the perfect mirror of co-existence and cooperation keeping society together as a unit. However, villages are less successful as representatives to dynamism of which cities are apt as examples. Life in cities is fast moving. Residents hold jobs, both in organized and unorganized sectors. Hence, it’s common to find employees of an MNC commuting to their workplaces on the same vehicle as a peddler and florist. What cities offer is diversity in terms of occupation of people and how it reflects upon the economy and behavior of people. However, none of the two settings is a complete representative of a society, often overlapping with each other. To get the holistic picture, it will be relevant to have an understanding of both.
  2. "During the past year, Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-job accidents than at the nearby Panoply Industries plant, where the work shifts are one hour shorter than ours. Experts say that significant contributing factors in many on-the-job accidents are fatigue and sleep deprivation among workers. Therefore, to reduce the number of on-the-job accidents at Quiot and thereby increase productivity, we should shorten each of our three work shifts by one hour so that employees will get adequate amounts of sleep." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted. While it may true that shortening the work shifts will decrease the number of accidents and increase the productivity of Quiot company, the argument fails to make a cogent case for it. The argument is rife with holes and assumptions like job nature of Panoply company and Quito company are similar, no other reasons behind the accidents except fatigue and deprivation of sleep and reduction in work hour will increase the productivity of Quiot company. Therefore, significant evidences must be judged before reducing the work hour in Quiot company. First of all, the argument assumes that, job nature of Quiot company and Panoply company are similar and what was worked well for Panoply company will also work for Quiot company. However, job nature of the two companies can be different. Panoploy company can be auto-mobile company where workers have a nice safe working environment. On the other hand, Quiot company can be steel manufacturing company where, workers have a higher risk for accident. Moreover, argument assumes that 30 percent increase in accident is a significant number. While it may true that, 30 percent can lead to a small number or, Quiot company is a big company than Panoply company where the number of accidents are relatively low than that of Panoply manufacturing company. Unless we know, the actual number of accidents and job nature of both the company, we can't compare compare them and can't say that what had gone well for Panoply company will also go well for Quiot Company. Secondly, the argument hinges upon on the assumption of experts that fatigue and deprivation of sleep are the only causes of accident in Quiot company. While it may be true, there can be other causes which can lead to the increased number of accidents like safety factors, awareness of workers etc. It may be true that, in Quiot company, workers are not fully aware of work-related dangers or how to handle these kinds of dangerous situation. Moreover, they can be inefficient and not expert workers. Aside from these, the environment, in which they are working, can be highly dangerous. For all these cases, the assumption of experts falls apart and we need to investigate other factors that can cause accidents. For this purpose, a committe of experts can be formed to evaluate the actual reasons behind the accidents. Lastly, the agrument assumes that, reduction in work shifts will increase the overall productivity of Quiot company. It may not hold in every case. For example, reduction in work shifts can reduce the production rate and decrease the profit margin. Consider the case of television company, if workers work less, they will produce less television and thus production rate will fall. Moreover, reduction in work-shifts won't necessary solve the crisis of sleep deprivation. For instances, workers are depressed for family reasons, low income or other psychological problems etc. Then, reduction in work shift will not help them to solve the problem of sleep deprivation and fatigue. Thus, to increase the productivity of Quiot company we must take consider the evidence how reduction in work hour will affect the overall working condition and production of the company. Therefore, significant evidences like job nature, actual causes behind the accident, how reduction in work shift will affect the productivity of Quiot Company, we can't predict that reduction in work shifts will decrease the number of accidents and increased the productivity in Quiot Company. Please Grade my essay and give me feedback how to improve.
  3. Hi all! I'm taking the GRE pretty soon and would appreciate any feedback (and a grade) for my practice issue essay. Thank you in advance! Here's the question.... All too often, companies hire outside consultants to suggest ways for the company to operate more efficiently. If companies were to spend more time listening to their own employees, such consultants would be unnecessary. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with these statements and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statements might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. And my response... I disagree with the statement that companies who listen more to their own employees would not need outside consultants. Although listening to one's own employees and hiring outside consultants are two different approaches to company betterment, they are not mutually exclusive, and one approach would not necessarily eliminate a need for the other. Companies generally hire outside consultants to increase profit by boosting overall efficiency. These outside consultants take a 'big picture' stance when viewing what the company should change. The suggestions from outside consultants are important because they come from an objective and knowledgeable source, and companies often need the advice of others who are not involved in the day-to-day aspects of the company itself. In addition to receiving suggestions from hired outside sources, companies should also be sure to listen to their employees. The human resources side of business is certainly important in its own way, and ensuring the satisfaction of employees helps to keep up productivity within the company. This intra-business, individual-focused approach to company efficiency is certainly one important aspect, but it is certainly not the only necessity to run a successful business. One example of this multi-pronged approach in action involves the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At the NIH, outside contractors are hired to evaluate the quality of data analysis, assess both ethical and practical aspects of research proposals, and even provide a quadrennial review of the use of funds for research and the related outcomes. In addition to all these quality controls and efficiency checks that are necessary to keep the research on-track and of the highest possible quality, there are ample opportunities for employees themselves to make suggestions and express their own opinions on how to improve both the research itself and the work environment generally. This truly holistic approach allows employees to be heard in addition to utilizing the expertise of objective outsiders to improve the company as much as possible. Because employees are involved in very specific tasks or research areas, it would not make sense to only rely on individual suggestions. Especially in such a large, diversified work environment, it is important to have some suggestions from consultants who know how to remain detached and to assess the overall efficiency of such a large-scale environment. In some cases, such as with small start-up businesses, it may be true that employee opinions are the only ones necessary to increase efficiency, especially if there is a smaller budget with which to work. Given the cost of hiring outside consultants, it is certainly true that some of these smaller businesses would not benefit enough from the advice to justify the hiring, and that in-house assessment of efficiency could provide high quality suggestions for improvement. In these cases, the original statement could hold true. However, it is often the case that a multi-pronged, multi-level approach involving both subjective inside and objective outside suggestions provide the best assortment of suggestions for how to increase a company's efficiency.
  4. Some people believe that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believe that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented. Neither the belief that political leaders must yield to public opinion by abandoning principle for the sake of compromise nor the belief that the leader should remain commited to particular principles and objectives to be effective are completely true. Rather they are complementary to each other for a leader to be effective. First, it is true that the politicians are elected by people and they are responsible to listen and address the best interests of the people. They need to find solutions to the problems faced by the people and in doing so they have to make some compromises with their political principles. But this doesn't mean that they have to abandon their principles everytime when the public thinks they have to. They are the leaders for the very reason that they have a better vision than an ordinary individual or the collective public. What the public thinks to be correct may not be always good for a nation. For example, the public might dislike the pact made with another country which has a history of bad relations. But in reality such agreement might bring economic prosperity to the country and sticking to your objectives might be the best thing to do. Such things are better understood by the political leaders only. Next, a leader should remain committed to particular principles and objectives but such committment should in no sense be larger than the good of the people. A politician should not decline to a policy that might bring great dividends to a country simply because the policy is communist in nature. An effective leader should have the ability to distinguish good from bad and should have the capacity to compromise his principles for the betterment of the whole country. After all the politicians are by the people and for the people. Finally, an effective politician is the one who bears a perfect understanding of good and bad. He is the one who has the knowledge of the extent of his principles and has the ability to understand when to let go his principles and when to stand firm. An effective leader is the one who is correct not the one who seems correct.
  5. Hello :) Here's my argument essay response of one of the mock test which I've been giving lately. Would be grateful if anyone could analyze it and provide some incisive feedback. :) The argument: The following is a letter from the parent of a private school student to the principal of that school: Last year, Kensington Academy turned over management of its cafeteria to a private vendor, Swift Nutrition. This company serves low-fat, low-calorie meals that students do not find enjoyable – my son and several of his friends came home yesterday complaining about the lunch options. While the intent of hiring Swift may have been to cause students to eat healthier foods, the plan is just going to cause students to bring their own, less healthy lunches instead of eating cafeteria food. If Swift is not replaced with another vendor, there will be serious health consequences for Kensington students. Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction. My response: The given argument talks about a letter written to the principal of the school who has turned over the management of its cafeteria to a private vendor, Swift Nutrition last year. The given letter is an amalgamation of complains, warnings and suggestions. But there are considerate amount of questions that the parent has failed to answer, which weakens the very purpose of the letter. In the former part of the letter, the parent alleges that Swift Nutrition serves low-fat, low-calorie meals that students do not find enjoyable. The parent does so because his son and his several friends came home yesterday complaining about the lunch options. However, the parents fails to mention what was the exact complaint. Was the food not tasty? Or did they not like the aesthetics of the food served? And most importantly, why did this complaint arise after one whole year? Perhaps they didn't enjoy because it was too hot in the cafeteria. Answers to these questions will help the principal of the school understand the dilemma of the students better. Also, are all the students having the same opinion about the food? If so, then the parent needs to provide evidence to bolster his claims. A survey result may help to support the his claim. Further in the letter, the parent posits that serving food which students don't enjoy will cause them to bring their own lunch, which is less healthy. Now, the statement itself may seem preposterous to the principal. He may think that how can a home-made lunch be less healthy? The intend of the parent is not lucid in this statement and he needs to provide specific insight on this claim. Does the parent mean that the lunch will lose its nutritious value? If yes, then that needs to be mentioned. Lastly, the parent says that if Swift is not replaced with another vendor, there will be serious health consequences for Kensington students. Again, on what basis is this statement made? Is there a past record of Swift where its consumers have been faced with serious consequences? If yes, then what's the source? Is it veritable? The given letter, while expressing concerns for the students, lack the ability to answer some serious questions. These questions need to be answered in order to falsify the decision of switching to Swift Nutrition. It also needs to posit various evidences to buttress the claims of the parent. Without these answers and evidences, it is very difficult to evaluate the prediction.
  6. In a letter to the editor regarding Central Plaza’s issues with a declined number of shoppers and a rise in littering and vandalism, the writer is quick to point a finger at an increase of skateboarders in the shopping center. However, the complaint has several holes in it and it is short-sighted to blame this current condition solely on the presence of skateboarders. First of all, one must consider the current economy. What is the financial health of the local economy? It is common that, in times of insecurity about income and future financial stability, the consumer will tighten the reins on spending, opting for only the most essential of purchases. If this plaza consists of a high number of specialty boutiques and the local economy is in decline, it would be easy to understand why the shops are seeing a reduction in visitors. Even those stores that feature staple items could expect to see a drawdown of sales in a poor economic environment. Commercial venues, such as plazas and malls like Central Plaza, are in a constant battle to draw the consumer. When a new shopping center opens up nearby, it is practical to assume that shoppers will flock to the newer location. At the very minimum, one would expect to see a temporary decline in visitors at the older shopping centers. With this in mind, Central Plaza should be looking inward to see what they are doing on a daily basis to keep the facility attractive to its steady shopping base and develop a creative strategy to attract new clientele. On the topic of litter and vandalism, have the shop owners in Central Plaza consulted with management regarding these issues? Perhaps the management company has cut back on staffing required to keep the plaza clean. It could be that the volume of litter and vandalism has not changed, but rather the way management is addressing these issues has. We must also consider the presence of the local police force. If the statement earlier about the declining economy holds true, this could also have ramifications on the daily number of patrols in the area. A smaller police presence could give way to an increase in undesirable behaviors that are negatively impacting the plaza. It is a premature judgment to blame the issues that Central Plaza is having entirely on the number of skateboarders on the premises. Furthermore, it is difficult to state with authority that the prohibition of skateboarding on the grounds will allow business in Central Plaza to return to its former retail success.
  7. The following appeared as a letter to the editor from a Central Plaza store owner. "Over the past two years, the number of shoppers in Central Plaza has been steadily decreasing while the popularity of skateboarding has increased dramatically. Many Central Plaza store owners believe that the decrease in their business is due to the number of skateboard users in the plaza. There has also been a dramatic increase in the amount of litter and vandalism throughout the plaza. Thus, we recommend that the city prohibit skateboarding in Central Plaza. If skateboarding is prohibited here, we predict that business in Central Plaza will return to its previously high levels." Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. In a letter to the editor regarding Central Plaza’s issues with a declined number of shoppers and a rise in littering and vandalism, the writer is quick to point a finger at an increase of skateboarders in the shopping center. 8. Hi all, I am new to this group. So, please be patient with me. I was wondering that can you please give me some constructive criticism on the following GRE essay and how I can improve it. Thank you in advance. "Scientific theories, which most people consider 'fact,' almost invariably prove to be inaccurate. Thus, one should look upon any information described as 'factual' with skepticism since it may well be proven false in the future." ================================================== Skeptics of scientific theories have long suggested that any theories and discoveries should be thoroughly tested and scrutinized before they are accepted as a universal fact, and I generally acquiesce with their thinking. One would not have to look too far back in the history to evaluate the negative impact caused by the people who instantly accepted the theories proposed by the intellectuals and aristocrats of the time e.g. the Earth was flat, Earth is the only planet, Sun is stationary in the Solar System etc. Even, theory that men and women can be strictly divided into two categories is now under danger. These kind of theories, which were going to be mocked and rejected, formed the basis of numerous "ground breaking" ideas. However, just accepting the ideas can be hardly described as feral. The major culprit in this whole saga is the legacy they had left and did not stress to their descendants that these are not facts and are likely to change. Hence, when centuries after, the theories of the past are being questioned, people had become so hardened to what their ancestors have taught them that they find it hard to believe or even "listen" to the new perspective. The most famous incident which instantly comes to mind is when the theory of evolution was first proposed. It was not only unanimously rejected, but it was portrayed as if one heinous crime has been committed against the humanity. Nonetheless, after many generations, more and more people are starting to believe that the theory of evolution may be true. The lead time would have been significantly shorter if our ancestors kept an open mind about science and did not create rigid boundaries around it. However, one has to give small credit to our ancestors for accepting baseless theories on their face value. This blind truth created uneasiness among the later generations and injected motivation to prove the theory write or wrong, whichever side of the coin one wants to look at. This enthusiasm led to invention of cameras, satellites, telephones, computers, hydrogen collider. In addition to the inventions, people started performing archaeological discoveries to find the evidence of their ancestors. All these factors culminated to form organisations like NASA and CERN. Finally, I would like to conclude by stressing the same thought I started with, that any new theories should be treated with caution unless concrete evidence is provided to support them. However, it is human nature to search for answers and quench their thirst for knowledge. Hence, it is unrealistic to think that scientists would magically stop providing theories which are really absurd, and one cant blame people for accepting the new ideas. But, the important thing is that one should keep an open mind about the new ideas. ================================================== Thank you in advance.
