  1. I am Arushi Gupta from India, I have done masters in Economics and I am preparing for GRE to pursue my higher studies outside India.
  2. Topic:In an attempt to improve highway safety, Prunty County last year lowered its speed limit from 55 to 45 miles per hour on all county highways. But this effort has failed: the number of accidents has not decreased, and, based on reports by the highway patrol, many drivers are exceeding the speed limit. Prunty County should instead undertake the same kind of road improvement project that Butler County completed five years ago: increasing lane widths, resurfacing rough highways, and improving visibility at dangerous intersections. Today, major Butler County roads still have a 55 mph speed limit, yet there were 25 percent fewer reported accidents in Butler County this past year than there were five years ago. Question:Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. My Response: The following argument is flawed for numerous reasons. There were many unwarranted assumptions made in argument. The below are the few main reasons for which the argument is found flawed. Main reason for the argument to be found flawed is assuming no improvement in highway safety by considering the number of accidents. Because the population of Prunty County might have grown very larger in mean time. Instead the ratio of number of accidents to the current population should be considered while making such comparisons. Another major reason find the argument flawed is assuming that the improvement project taken up Butler County would work for Prunty County. Because there could be numerous reasons behind improvement project being success in Butler County which might not be there in Prunty County like the people's behaviour and attitude in Butler County could different from that of people in Prunty County. Further changes like increasing lane widths, resurfacing rough roads and improving visibility might not be the only reasons behind the decrease of accident rates. There could be some other reasons like cops rules, and fine amounts might be different, Due to which people might get scared to cross speed limits. And that could be the reason for decrease of accident rates. Finally It was mentioned that there was 25 percent fewer reported accidents in Butler Count than there were five years ago. But the comparison made in Prunty County was within one year. So there is lot of difference in periods in which comparison is made. These are all the evidences required to weaken the reasons which show argument flawed. And also to strengthen the assumptions made in argument.
  3. Claim: In any field—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years. Reason: The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalisation through new leadership. Question: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. My Response: I totally agree with the claim that in any field- leader in power should step down after five years. And also feel the reason behind it is flawless. Definitely revitalisation is the best path for success in any field which only comes through new leaderships. For suppose if we have consider business field, The trends and requirements of the society changes with time, In 90's desktops were trend then comes laptops and now its smartphones. So to withstand with these change in trends, business organisations definitely need change in leaders. That is why big companies change their leaders periodically. They choose the new leader who can challenge the competitors with upcoming trends. So with change in leader there comes noticeable difference in companies standard. To state another reason, think about GRE preparation, People often suggest us to book the slot before starting preparation that is because, People generally take things seriously only when they are under time restrictions or stress. Similarly a political leader does his work with mush seriousness only when he kept under time restrictions. He will start his work from the day one hoping he could achieve all his aims and dreams within the allotted tenure. One other advantage of changing leadership is, If the leader in an evasive minded, we can preclude his corruptible decisions or rules at least after five years. So that people choose good leader for the next tenure. So it is a good rule that in any field- leader in power should step down after five years, so that the organisation will be in success path.
  4. Hello all, Been active here for almost 2 years now. Finally took the GRE yesterday and scored a 327(Q-168, V-159). Though not very happy with the score as I was targeting 330+ but I don't have the mental stamina to prepare for the gre again so most likely won't be retaking it. FWTW, start early and finish early. I see a lot of people rushing in the last 30 days before their application deadlines to take their GRE. Prep strategy: I prepared seriously for 3 months and primarily focused on verbal preparation. Initially, I thought of joining a classroom test prep but once I took the initial diagonstic test, I realized that I should be able to manage it on my own. I had though started focusing on vocab on my own almost a year back I relied on the ETS Official Guide to understand the type of questions well. Nothing can come as close to the actual gre as the questions in this book. Everyone should get it. The only problem is that there are very few practice questions and I wish they had more. For verbal: The OG verbal questions are the best. Apart from that, GRE verbal grail is great for practice. I was struggling with reading comprehension questions. Went through gre grail rigorously and was much more in command of RC. For vocab, I used 45 day gre vocab book and did 1 vocab exercise per day. Apart from that, I also did barron's gre both for verbal and quant. For Quant, I found the practice questions in Manhattan 5 lbs book to be quite useful. Extra: I read op-eds in newspapers daily and would then ask myself questions like “What is the primary purpose of this op-ed” “What is the function of para 3” etc. Doing this really built up my mental stamina to read long passages and helped me tackle GRE questions better. Practice tests: I relied on powerprep II and Manhattan tests. These gave me enough practice to prepare myself for the actual test. Actual day test: The actual test was quite close to PowerPrep II tests. The difficulty level was quite close so it didn’t feel any different except for the pressure of the test day. It's been pretty long since I have been preparing so will relax now for a week or two. Will start with school selection research after that. Thank you all who make this community great and resourceful. Let me know if you have any questions.
  5. Hi all. I'm new to the site and also new to applying for MBA. I'm applying to UCLA executive MBA program. I have two months to take the test. Can anyone recommend a good online prep course? Magoosh? Princeton? Kaplan, Manhattan Prep? I'm leaning towards Magoosh combined with hiring a local tutor. Are the course practice questions most like the actual test? I appreciate any feedback here. Thanks!
  6. Hello all, I am a Final Year Engineering student & I am planning to give the GRE in 1st week of May. In our city there is a reputed academy which gives high quality study material, which I have already bought. Since I haven't enrolled myself in any tutions, I don't have any guidance as to how to begin the preparation. Also I have no idea about all the formalities, paper work, etc that has to be done. It would be really very very helpful if somebody could provide me with some guidance, as I am becoming a bit paranoid about my decision of not joining any tutions (which now I cannot revert!). :dejected: Thank You...

    MLIC Test Prep.

I am writing this as a warning to people searching for test prep materials. My experience with MLIC Turboprep is one that should not be repeated. After paying $1400 and receiving confirmation that I had a place in the upcoming weekend class, I received a series of unorganized and incomprehensible pdf files with impertinent information and exercises. Then, I received an e-mail saying that I was going to be moved out of the class I signed up for and placed into another one. After explaining to them that this was not possible (I was going to be out of town), they said it was out of their hands and there was nothing they or I could do. Reasonably, I was not happy. They said they would not offer a refund, and therefore I went to my credit card company to appeal the charges. After a long back-and-forth, I did not receive the services promised and was forced to pay for them anyway. As a customer, I have never been treated so disrespectfully, and I got the impression that it was not the first time MLIC had dealt with unhappy customers and disputed charges. I warn you not to partake in this scam. I used other materials to prepare for the GRE, including Kaplan and PowerScore (which I was very pleased with) and I scored a 1450. Kaplan is challenging and good for those who plan on getting a high score, and PowerScore offers a great and affordable weekend course along with some good test strategies.
