My Target Scores

 1. I got a 164 on the quant section. Is it too low for a top 10 econ program? Other than that, other parts of the application are ready.
 2. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Having a lot of trouble... "In a certain dormitory, each person is either a hockey fan or a football fan but not both. On Friday, the ratio of hockey fans to football fans was 2 to 3. However, on Saturday, 18 of the football fans switched and became hockey fans, and the ratio of hockey fans to football fans became 5 to 3. How many people are in the dorm?"
 3. Hello people, I'm a fourth year engineering student. I just finished solving each and every question in the 6 set MGRE book for quant. However, I found out that most of my friends are solving the 5 lb manhattan book only. Apparently, all of them went to a coaching institute and I didn't, so I bought and solved questions from 6 set MGRE book instead of the 5 lb one since the latter doesn't have explanations for each topic like the 6 set MGRE books. I didn't have much of a problem in understanding and solving all these books since I'm an engineering student. However, I'm now wondering if I should also solve the 5 lb one for quant. I wish to get the best marks in quant, but I also have other things to do for improving my resume. So will solving the 5 lb book for quant be worth the time? Or more specifically, will I actually find certain type of questions that are not covered in the 6 set MGRE books already? Thanks.
 4. I'm completely hopeless now that I realize what kind of signal a low GRE Quant score can send out to grad schools. I want your advice on how to pull off an admission offer for a Masters Economics most possibly in United States. Here is my profile Type of Undergrad: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: University of London Distance Learning Program (BSc Economics) - This program is run by LSE and taught by affiliated institutions across the globe. University of London International Programmes with academic direction provided by LSE. - University of London International Programmes - Study - Home GPA: Don't know how to convert, I currently fulfill all requirements for a 2:1 (Upper Second Class Honors) GRE: Q 156 (64th percentile) V 147 A 4.0 TOEFL: 104 (Speaking: 29) Math Courses: Calc I (A-) Calc II (A-) Mathematical Economics (A-) (involves Static and Dynamic Optimization, Differential Eq, Control Theory) Statistics I (B) Statistics II (A-) (Prob Theory, Distributions, Inference) Linear Algebra and Real Analysis (C+) Econ Courses: Principles Micro&Macro (A-) Intermediate Micro (A) Intermediate Macro (B+) Intro Econometrics (A-) Monetary Economics (A) International Economics (B) Research &Teaching: None SOP: Made a thesis proposal by describing a research topic in monetary policy tools and effectiveness, also highlighted a academic excellence award received at the end of 2013/14 semester Applied to: UBC, Tufts, CEMFI, BGSE, UCL, Duke, Wisconsin, Grad-Geneva, NUS, Boston, Texas-Austin, Warwick Rejected by: BGSE, UCL (within 2 weeks) Accepted by: None so far Concerns: 1) Did my GRE score close the curtains on my hopes? I had carefully assessed whether I needed to retake it but UBC and UCL have mentioned a minimum requirement of 156 in quant section and BGSE mailed me that GRE is not as important as your quant subjects grades. Although that shouldn't count now as 2 out of those 3 already rejected my application. NUS, Warwick didn't require GRE. It is too late to retake it anyways. Have I made a critical error? 2) Knowing my profile and places I applied and rejections I got, can you advise on where I should NOW apply as a backup, possibly in US for MA Economics? I don't necessarily want to pursue a PhD and wouldn't mind working in industry for economic research institutions or financial services. How reputed are NC State, Georgia State, Georgetown, UColorado-Denver, Texas A&M, Florida State for their economics departments and in particular masters programs not just in terms of getting into PhD in the future but also for getting into job market? Any other places in Canada, UK, Europe? 3) Also, what will be good options for MPP or Public Administration programs as well as Masters in Finance (leaving out the elite group of MIT, Princeton, Vanderblit) ? How good are Arizona State, Temple U, Massachusetts-Boston and IIT Stuart? Would really appreciate some input Thanks a lot for your time P.S. My grades were in UK percentage scale and hence I used WES website to convert them as follows:

Grading Scale

Scale U.S. Grade Equiv.

70-100 A

65-69 A-

60-64 B+

50-59 B

45-49 C+

40-44 C

0-39 F

5. Hi, I cannot come up with a way to solve the following. Of a group of farmers surveyed, 30% had at least one horse, 40% at least one cow and 40% had neither. How many have horse and cow? Grateful in advance for any help.
 6. Hi there, I've done a lot of reading on this forum so far and was hoping to find some help in evaluating my profile for grad school admissions. I've been out of my undergrad for a little over 4 years now, working in public accounting in Canada, and am looking to go back to do an MA in Economics or a Masters of Financial Economics. I was thinking of applying to the MFE program at U of T and Western in Canada, the Masters of Finance and Economics at LSE, the MSc of Managerial and Financial Economics at HEC and probably the MA of Economics at U of T and Queens. My profile is as follows: Undergrad: Undergrad in business from a top Canadian business school Majors: Business, but majored in economics and computer science for 2 years before transferring into business Undergrad GPA: 3.68 for four years, 3.88 in final year GRE: Just wrote, unofficial score was 166Q, 164V. I think I might be able to get a 170Q if I re-write, but just wrote yesterday so have to wait a month and know that will hold up applications for rolling admissions programs. Is it worth re-writing knowing that it will mean that it will hold up my application for rolling admissions programs (LSE in particular)?Courses (just picked the quant related ones): Calc I and II, full year of intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, econometrics, and finance. Also took a half year of advanced microeconomics last summary as mentioned below. Letters of Recommendation: Struggling a bit here. I can get strong professional letters of recommendation, but academic ones are more challenging since I've been out of school for over 4 years. I took an advanced microeconomic theory course last summer as a refresher, and got a 93, but it was taught by a PhD student - is it worth requesting a letter from him or is better to ask more senior professors I had 6+ years ago who likely barely remember me? Any advice is really appreciated - particularly around re-writing the GRE, reference letters, applying as a 'mature' student who's been out of school for a few years, and whether it's wishful thinking to get into these programs with my stats. Thanks!
