3. The passage is: While the best sixteenth-century Renaissance scholars mastered the classics of ancient Roman literature in the original Latin and understood them in their original historical context, most of the scholars’ educated contemporaries knew the classics only from school lessons on selected Latin texts. These were chosen by Renaissance teachers after much deliberation, for works written by and for the sophisticated adults of pagan Rome were not always considered suitable for the Renaissance young: the central Roman classics refused (as classics often do) to teach appropriate morality and frequently suggested the opposite. Teachers accordingly made students’ needs, not textual and historical accuracy, their supreme interest, chopping dangerous texts into short phrases, and using these to impart lessons extemporaneously on a variety of subjects, from syntax to science. Thus, I believe that a modern reader cannot know the associations that a line of ancient Roman poetry or prose had for any particular educated sixteenth-century reader. And the question is: The information in the passage suggests that which of the following would most likely result from a student’s having studied the Roman classics under a typical sixteenth-century teacher? A) The student recalls a line of Roman poetry in conjunction with a point learned about grammar. B) The student argues that a Roman poem about gluttony is not morally offensive when it is understood in its historical context. C) The student is easily able to express thoughts in Latin. D) The student has mastered large portions of the Roman classics. E) The student has a sophisticated knowledge of Roman poetry but little knowledge of Roman prose. The answer is given as A, but I have serious doubts over this. If the student would learn from a 16th-century teacher, wouldn't he learn the appropriate context instead of the grammar; doesn't the passage state that the contemporary teachers taught grammar instead of the context? As such modern-day readers do not know about the associations between the Roman poetry or prose and the appropriate historical context in which it was written because it refuses to provide concepts of morality?
4. For all the scathing accuracy with which she criticizes the lives of social aspirants and moneyed folk, the writer appears to (i)_______ being part of the world she makes seem so (ii)________. Blank (i) Blank (ii) A savor D insufferable B abhor E intoxicating C distain F glamorous For the second blank, it's not hard to find "insufferable" in accordance with "criticizes", but why the word "seem" can constitute a contrast between first and second blank so that it should be "savor"? Thanks for your help!
5. For both the sentence equivalence, and the fill in the blank, what concepts should I be thinking about while answering questions?

8. Hello everyone, I am taking the GRE in three weeks. I took my first Kaplan practice test yesterday before doing any studying and got 96th percentile Quant, 56th percentile Verbal. I am applying to Finance PhD programs, so clearly quant is more important, but I am also worried about the verbal section. Although I have lived in the US for about 10 years, I have a small vocabulary since most of studies were quant oriented. Throughout the majority of the verbal section of the practice exam I didn't know the meanings of the choices (vocab questions). What would you say is the best tactic for me? Is it realistic to try to learn a bunch of words during these few weeks, or is there a better way to approach this? Just to be clear, I am not looking to get a perfect score, but I would like to land somewhere in the 80th percentile or so. Thank you very much!
9. Hi guys, I took GRE some time back and vocabulary was the most difficult part for me. From the standard list of words, there were a lot I remembered but a few which I could never remember. I searched for a website which could test me on the words I did not know more frequently than the words I knew. I couldn't find such a website. Then I decided to create one. And now I have: Vocabulary GRE. Based on your right and wrong answers, it identifies your strong and weak words and will ask you YOUR weak words more frequently. The website is absolutely free to use and does not have advertisements to distract you. I am not making any money out of this. My goal is to just make it easier for everyone else to learn these words. One thing I will definitely appreciate is feedback. If this method proves helpful, I will extend it to cover quant as well. [DELETED BY MODERATOR] Thank you. Regards, Neerav Mehta.
10. Dear Readers , many times i'm full of frustration of understanding reading comprehension questions , specially the one require reason thinking , and deep understanding of the question , today i was stuck on this question and can't find help any where , but i keep fight and read deeply many times , but this way for sure is bad for timing exam , but at least you passed on this question and then you can remember you face it and solve it before , here is the example , i hope the image of question is show in clearly way : Lets see my Explain for this question maybe its help non-english natives as helped me , fast analyze to kill this short reading passage : Paragraph 1 the author start with name of something , play , and mention name of the name related to the play and describe her view with few lines and the author said or conclude her view as realistically incomplete view paragraph 2 then the author said we , that's mean he talking in public view tone , when they see her dual view , then the author say we can accept her play's ironic as deliberately intentional , rather than "unintentional" irony attributes by the other one called Bigsby . paragraph 3 then from indeed to the last part of this paragraph the author said that she didn't get credit for her work , but her work was full of intentional irony work , and therefore some of critics describe her work as thematic conflict this last paragraph is what the question as which answer have the same situation Guess which one is the answer wait for reply

12. I am trying to practice some essay writing. Here is a sample of what I have written. Please let me know your views on the same. Issue Topic: "In most societies, competition generally has more of a negative than a positive effect" Competition drives this era of a rapid technological and social change leading to increasing life complexity. It has both positive and negative effects. The winner gets it all and the looser is left with nothing. Competition is necessary in some fields to drive people to perform better, at the same time this brings in some of the major flaws in the basic methods people devise to win. I would like to take the example of basic sciences. People talk about how important basic sciences are in every walk of our life. Basic sciences have experienced a growth not very different from the microbial culture. Bacteria go through an exponential phase of growth, multiplying every few minutes, until they exhaust the medium or the essential nutrients required for them to grow. They, then go into a stationary phase. We in science have gone through an exponential phase of growth and we now have to cope with some of the stress and strain and the lack of nutrients. Basic science has come to a stationary phase. Think of a reason for this to happen, you come out with the answer as competition. One may feel that competition cannot affect the growth of basic sciences, but the fact is it has and it has affected in not a good way. More of the development that is currently happening in science is that of applied sciences, the engineering part of it. We as students at universities, strive to get the best scores by only studying what has been prescribed in the syllabus, we forget that the syllabus has been framed only to kindle the interest in us in a particular subject. In the competitive world where every single mark that we earn counts for our rank, we develop a narrow outlook where we start feeling that all that we have to study is something that is prescribed in our syllabus. Our innovative thinking dies. Instead, if we can manage to come out of the element of competition, we tend to see the other side of the world where more than just the text book plays a vital role. We start thinking. As the age-old aphorism goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention” is not usually correct. I would like to paraphrase in the inverse way, “Invention is the mother of necessity”. Most of the inventions have been serendipitous. Discovery of x-rays, invention of penicillin, polio vaccination were all accidental discoveries. None of these was oriented towards a particular goal. Research should not be goal oriented as it is required in this competitive world. Great inventions seldom take the world by storm. They must be cultivated to be understood, understood before they can be properly appreciated. For a successful invention, there is a necessity of time and financial support. These are a couple of things tough to ask for in a competitive world. Basic science today lacks both of the requirements. As I said, the nutrients required for the development of basic sciences is exhausted or people have diverted these to applied sciences where they thrive to win in the competitive world. Competition is good to a certain extent till it thrives the people to do something. But it should not be extended in all the fields and in all walks of life. Importance has to be given to researches which are time oriented as well.
