  1. Hello, I plan to apply to a few PhD programs this Fall. The constraint is that I have to be in a city in the NE corridor. My profile is not strong enough for a top 40 program so I am looking at top 50 or beyond. I have identified the following programs: (GWU in DC, Drexel and Temple in Philly, possibly UDel but it is not in a city, Rutgers (close enough to trains) and Northeastern in Boston). I am quite interested in GWU's and Temple's programs. Is anybody familiar with these two programs? I have heard good things about both. Living in DC is expensive while Philly is a bit cheaper. Temple's department seems to be rebuilding and they seem to have a young and active crowd but I am somewhat worried about their reputation. I am planning to get in touch with current grad students and the DGS to get a bit more information about conditions (I heard stipend is around 20k for 5 years with the possibility of either teaching in the summer or getting a research award). GWU is also a good program - I am interested in macroeconomics, but I am not certain I will be competitive.
  2. Hi, I want to work in Econ Dev at world bank, UN, ADB and similar organizations. I'm not sure which programs to apply to that will give me the best chances to get to those jobs! Aiming at schools like GWU, IHEID, etc. Graduated: May 2019, want to apply for 2020 or 2021. Type of Undergrad: BSc. in Financial Mathematics from Canadian unranked university Undergrad GPA: CGPA (3.15), GPA last twenty credits (3.67), Math GPA (3.8) Undergrad Econ Courses: Intro Micro (A), Intro Macro (B+), EnvEcon (A), Money and Banking (B+), going to take Intermediate Macro and maybe Micro Math Courses: Calc I,II,III (D-, D+, A-), Prob&Stats I,II(A-, A), Ordinary Differential Equations (A-), Partial Differential Equations (A+), Linear Algebra (A-), Applied Linear Algebra (A+), Numerical Analysis (A+), Stochastic Processes (A+), Fin Maths I,II(B+,A+) LORs: Two professors in whose classes I got A+'s. One was my thesis Programming: R, Python, SAS, MATLAB Research Experience: Undergrad Thesis in Mathematics (A+) Work experience: Data Analyst Intern at the gov , and analytics/data science role at a top bank in canada (July '19 - July '20) Questions: 1. Where can I get into a decent masters in Europe, Canada, US?? 2. Can I do anything to strengthen my application?

  4. Hi everyone, I am interested in development economics and international affairs and I got acceptances to both American University and George Washington University. I would much rather attend GWU but the offer is unfunded, while at American, I was offered a GA-ship totaling 19.2k. My parents can not help me financially, unfortunately, and I will be on my own for tuition and living costs. My question is, do you know anyone who has gone to GWU without a funding offer? Do you know if the school usually finds a way to help its students financially once they enroll? Am I at a bargaining position, and if yes, should I mention to them that I got a funded offer from American or will this be irrelevant? Finally, is it worth being in debt to attend GWU if I have the option to go to American? Thank you for your honest opinions in advance! This forum is invaluable!
