  1. The arguments made to prove Corporateville is a superior place to live compared to Middlesburg are flawed and void of substantial proof. When a company headquarters changes location, there are different factors considered than when an individual or a family makes the same move. The truth that there has been a recent surge in the number of homeowners in Corporateville does not prove that it is a superior place to live compared to Middlesburg. There can be many reasons for this surge outside of the fact that SuperCorp recently moved its headquarters to Corporateville. There is the possibility that a myriad of other companies have also moved to Corporateville, not only SuperCorp. Also, just becuase a company moves headquarters does not mean the employees must move with the company. Some employees may have a lease that they cannot afford to break, or have wonderful neighbors they do not want to leave. Corporatesville may have recently installed a large amusement park that people want to live near. The assumtion that employees must move where their job headquarters is located cannot be justified. The survey data showing that SuperCorp employees prefer to live in an area that is not urban means nothing with respect to the recent surge in the number of homeworners in Corporateville. Corporateville cannot be the only non-urban city in a commutable distance from SuperCorps headquarters. In addition, the survey data may not even be an accurate representation of all the employees at SuperCorps. The survey may have targeted people with families or people within a certain age or race demographic. There is no proof that the survey was unbiased and/or all inclusive of every employee at SuperCorps and therefore, cannot be an accurate representation of the company. While it is understandable for a company to make a move to a new town due to tax cuts and a safer environment, there are different factors to be considered when singles, couples, and families make the same transition. For example, not every employee is in a finacially stable enough situation to be able to move with the company. In addition to financial stability, other employees may have other commitments to Middlesburg such as a spouses current job or the school their child attends. Moving from one town to the next requires more thought and reasoning besides a tax cut. The arguements in favor of Corporateville as a superior place to spend life and time have no true meaning. There are many more factors to consider when an individual, and especially a family, makes a move from one town to another. These factors were not considered and therefore, the argument was weak and couldn't provide all the proof needed to make the claim that Corporateville is a better place to live.
  2. Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. Society is two-fold, benign people helping to improve society and deceptive individuals contriving to make more profits for their selfish motives. Scandals expose these immoral activities and sometimes bad characters of certain people regarded with utmost value. Therefore, the issue of scandals being a useful tool for showcasing problems that aren't mentioned by speakers or reformers is absolutely justifiable. Scandals bring out the illegal activities done by various organizations to the common masses who are unaware of these problems and they work hard together to find appropriate solutions. For instance, during the British colonization, they introduced a farming in India known as 'Indigo Farming' that increases crop production to almost double than average. However, people were unaware of the detrimental effects, like rapid decrease in the soils' nutritive properties in later years, of such a method. Later this scandal was revealed and caused farmers to revolt against this ill practice. No speaker or reformer mentioned this during their speeches, since they were more concerned about other problems like increasing prices of the crops, eliminating the middle man in their trading process and others. Hence, such scandals are necessary to expose activities that are causing latent problems or will be prime reasons for conundrums in future. Scandals also pave way for good reforms for a better future. Had the 'Indigo Farming' scandal not have been brought to limelight, there would not have been a more significant unity in struggling for India's independence from the British. Recent scandals like 'Volkswagen Emission Scandal' showed how car manufacturers exploited emission rules to make high performance cars. These cars emitted pollution beyond certain standardized benchmarks but was the common masses weren't aware of such an illegal activity until the scandal happened. Hence, with such scandals, there is a strive to improve laws that will help society coexist with Nature. It was rumoured that a lot of prominent reformers knew about this activity by Volkswagen, but didn't mention them because of the influence Volkswagen had on the automobile market. Therefore, even though reformers try to change the prevalent evil in the existing society, a lot of them are mere 'puppets' to magnanimous institutions and hence won't bring certain problems to light. In conclusion, scandals are a way to bring certain problems infront of the people. Since speakers and reformers generally talk about problems that are widely known to people so that they gain more attention, catching secret illicit activities wouldn't have been possible otherwise.
  3. Prompt: Universities should require students to take courses only within those fields they are interested in studying. Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position. My essay: To be successful university students should get involved in many different fields, instead of focusing only on fields those they are interested in studying. Many scientific subjects are not isolated from each other, however they are interrelated and some are fundamental to others. One of the most critical factors that determine whether someone will make some achievements in one field is that if he or she has enough basic knowledge of other relevant fields on which that field is built. Many scientific subjects such as computer science and physics require considerable knowledge of mathematics, and that is why each fresh year student in these fields is required to take lots of courses of calculous, linear algebra, statistics and so on. However many students studying these subjects find mathematics boring and difficult. If they were allowed to study only within their favorite fields they would definitely drop mathematical courses. Clearly then, the lack of necessary basis of mathematics would stop them from succeeding in their further studies. Nowadays, the competition in job market is becoming more and more drastic. Therefore, university students should arm themselves with comprehensive knowledge. That means students might need to extend the diversity and range of their knowledge. By taking courses from different subjects students could gain some inspiration and improve their creativity. They might even find their new interest when taking courses of fields they thought they were nor good at or interested in at all. If universities required students to study only within fields in which they are interested chances are that they might lose so many opportunities to discover themselves and their potential capabilities. On the other hand, implementing this policy might benefit some students: they can dedicate all of their time to what they enjoy doing instead of wasting a lot of time on some courses they are not good at. Thus, they may achieve more than before. To sum up, university students are encouraged to take different courses from fields outside their interests. By doing this they can expand the range of their knowledge and be more successful in their career.
  4. A reveal of something that is considered unpleasant or inappropriate by the public is called a scandal. Scandals are most of the time are not useful for the society since they might cause lack of trust in government and do not generally lead to successful reforms. When we talk about scandals, often times we relate it to politics. In terms of politics, scandals are not useful for the society because they might lead to loss of trust in government and political process. For example, a member of the parliament might very well vote on a policy issue based on his/her economic concerns and bargain with corporate institutions. A news report that reveals this scandal, however, might result in voters generalizing all other members and losing trust in politics. The loss of trust in politics is a great danger for democracies because when people think that they do not have the power to direct politics, they might refuse to vote and this would ultimately lead to the collapse of democracy. Just as scandals are a threat for democracy and trust in political systems, they also do not open new ways for reforms rather they make these scandalous acts mundane. A good example of that is the political crisis that is currently going on in Uganda. A unanimous Twitter account has released the documents that prove the corruption in government. The government did not punish those who committed these acts and now the public sees this massive scandal as an intrinsic part of a government. Although these two convincing facts tell us that scandals are not useful tools that can achieve big things for society, scandals sometimes can increase the awareness of society. The Snowden case is a perfect example for this. Edward Snowden who worked for CIA previously has released documents showing the daily intervention of government in our private lives. Although it was criticized by some, it has helped citizens to know their rights and how the government exercises its power. A scandal should not be considered useful because it leads to loss of trust in political process and does not bring new reforms or good outcomes. One might argue that a scandal increases our awareness but what they take from us is bigger than what they give.
  5. People's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. Response: Behavior is a part of personality of an individual. It shows how a person reacts into a given situation.Everyday we come across certain situations where we would have reacted in ways that comes naturally to us. The topic is trying to reason out what affects the behavior in people or cause changes in their behavior. It state that behavior is moulded more by the external forces than the self made .I believe that external factors significantly affects ones behavior. Lets start from the point of our childhood.Don't our personalities reflect what we faced in our childhood? For example, a child who was brought up in a calm and peaceful content family will be far more composed and balanced in behavior.A child belonging to the family of moral values will grew up with a strong character. Here, the forces that determine our behavior is our family. On the other hand, if a person lives up in a company of negative environment it will show up in his character. Taking more positive outlook, most of our leaders who came from humble background but now changed into a vibrant people after facing the real world.Like Shahrukh khan who was one of the most influential people listed by forbes. He came into the movie world without having any movie background. Started from the bottom and now he's changed into a dynamic personality because of both the challenges he faced and support that he received from the world. In conclusion, behavior works alot how a person current mindset is and the mindset is largly affected by the external challanges he face. Even a pessimistic person can turned into an optimist if he's provided with a good set of friends and book that can motivate him. Thus it is the forces around us ,from the birth to the end of our lives that determine our behavior and hence our personality.
  6. The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette. "The population on Balmer Island increases to 100,000 during the summer months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the town council of Balmer Island plans to limit the number of mopeds rented by each of the island's six moped rental companies from 50 per day to 30 per day during the summer season. Last year, the neighboring island of Torseau enforced similar limits on moped rentals and saw a 50 percent reduction in moped accidents. We predict that putting these limits into effect on Balmer Island will result in the same reduction in moped accidents." Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument. Response:- The argument claims that by decreasing the number of mopeds rented by the moped rental companies will reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians.Stated in this way the argument fails to mention several key factors ,on the basis of which it could be evaluated. The conclusion of the argument relies on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence .Hence the argument is weak ,unconvincing and has several flaws. Firstly, the argument readily assumes that by decreasing the number of mopeds rented by rental companies from 50 to 30 per day will cause the reduction of mopeds and pedestrians accidents. However, by limiting the number of mopeds from 50 to 30 per day will cause more number of pedestrians leading to greater risk of accidents. Moreover, imposing restriction on moped rental companies may result in diversifying into two or more company overall the number of mopeds remain same and the restriction will be ineffective. Second, the argument assumes that there will be a reduction of 50 percent as same as torseau island. How author can assume that by limiting the number of mopeds from 50 per day to 30 per day will bring down the accident percent down to 50? There is no proof supporting this data. Proportional decrease in mopeds rental will bring proportional decrease in accident percent would have supported the argument. Finally, the author compares the present situation of balmer island to the last year situation of torseau island which is irrelevant.May be the population of balmer island is more than the population of torseau island in summer thats why the number of accidents are more in balmer island than torseau. It is not necessary that applying the same policy to balmer as torseau will result same as in torseau. In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above mentioned reason and is therefore unconvincing. In order to assess the merits of a certain situation ,it is essential to have a full knowledgeof all contributing factors. It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly mentioned the similarities between two island and provided statical data.Without this information, the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.
  7. I am taking the GRE in a week and just found out about this website. I would really appreciate it if someone could grade my argument essay. Thank you very much in advance! *********************************************************************************** Argument task: The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station. “Over the last year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to local news and weather. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just cancelled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.” Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. The business manager of the television station makes some unwarranted assumptions as to the reasons behind complaints from viewers, termination of advertising contracts, and loss of revenues. If these assumptions are not backed up by stronger arguments, the manager could be coming to a faulty conclusion. The manager's statement implies that the sole reason for the complaints from the viewers is the change in time allocation for national news vs. weather and local news. What he or she fails to clarify is what these complaints are about. It is not necessarily true that viewers are unhappy with the change in time for each program but may be unhappy with the program content itself. In order to make a more sound judgement on the reason behind the unsatisfaction of the viewers, the manager needs to look more carefully into the details of the complaints received. Secondly, the business manager assumes that local businesses cancelled their advertising contracts in the late-night news program because of the increased air time of national news. However, it may be that they simply no longer want to advertise on this channel because of decrease in number of viewers as a result of unsuccessful programs but not specifically because of the change in time distribution. It may also be that they no longer have the funds to pay this channel to air their advertisements. On the other hand, it could be that they still want to advertise on the same channel but in the morning programs instead to target a different audience. In order to better justify this reason stated by the manager, he or she needs to ensure that he fully understands the story behind the cancellation of the advertising contracts. At the end of the statement, he or she comes to the conclusion that restoring the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level will attract more viewers and stop the loss of revenues, therefore solving all the problems the channel is facing. This conclusion is rash and unjustified as the channel may be losing viewers and revenue because of several other reasons, such as a decline in the quality of the programs aired, the launch of a new rival channel that is more up to date and more to the liking of viewers, or an unorganized program schedule. Without a comprehensive comprehension of the increase in complaints from viewers and the the drop in revenue, there is no reason to believe that restoring the system to its previous state will solve these issue. Should the manager find evidence which supports all his or her arguments and confirms that the reason behind all the challenges is the decrease of time allocation to local news and weather, it would be a reasonable measure to return to the previous system followed. If however, it appears that there are different reasons for these challenges, the television station could be making an unwise decision to switch back to the former schedule as it may not have the positive effect anticipated in the memorandum.
  8. I am taking the GRE in a week and just found out about this website. I would really appreciate it if someone could grade my issue essay. Thank you very much in advance! ************************************************************************** Issue Task : A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Write a response in which you explain the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. In order to set a fair and uniform educational system in a state, a nation should reqire all of its students to study the same national curriculum. However, this curriculum does not necessarily have to be standardized up till the last years of high school and should allow for adjustments and enhancements when necessary. Setting standard national curriculum would ensure that there is less of a gap in the quality or level of academia given to students at public and private schools. Leaving the curriculum in the hands of each school would make discrepancies much higher and would create a social imbalance in the education of children from affluent families who can afford high level private instituations and less financially privileged children who attend less expensive schools. Furthermore, it makes it easier to compare student performance, IQs, and exam grades if all have been following the same curriculum. Looking even further into the future, a single curriculum would make college accpetance processes easier and more fair, as all applicants are compared based on the same eduacational background, discounting the inevitable difference in teacher qualification, school environment, and equipment. However, a single curriculum also has its downside. Setting the curriculum "in stone" risks creating an uber rigid system which does not allow for freedom of expression, experimentation, and innovation on behalf of both the teachers and the students. This in turn limits the potential to learn from current events and adapt to classroom situations or needed adjustments based on unplanned or unexpected events throughout the year. Moreover, a curriculum set by the nation, which usually implies the government, also riks having a system which is molded by a hidden political agenda, which again, may limit free thinking, analytical skills, and cognitive abilities. In order to have an effective educational system, it should be mandated that a national curriculum be followed as a guide and simultaneously allow for flexibility in assigning additional projects, assignments, or topics of discussion. Furthermore, a uniform curriculum should not necessarily be followed up until the students enter college. It may be more sensible to have a national curriculum from elementary to middle school, but have a less rigid academic system in high school once the students have a reached an age which allows for and requires more open teaching methods and autonomous research. Not only should the curriculum be more flexible, but it should also be drafted and written in cooperation between governmental entities, representatives from private schools and public schools, professionals with practical experience, and ideally even with the input of the students themselves. Setting a national curriculum to be followed by all schools in a certain country has its pros and cons. While it ensures fair and equal education to students of all socioeconomic levels, it also may be too rigid and prevent students from reaching their full creative potential. Finding a balance between a well-rounded curriculum which leaves room for tweaking creates a practical and effective academic system that benefits all of the students, teachers, and nation.
