  1. PROFILE:Type of Undergrad: B.S. Math, B.A. Econ with honors, T10 Undergrad GPA: 3.45 (econ: 3.93, math: 3.87). First year GPA was extremely low with several Ds/Fs. Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA :N/A GRE: Q170, V165, AW5.5 Econ Courses: Honors Intermediate Micro (A), Honors Intermediate Macro (A), Honors Econometrics (A), Auction Theory (A), Dynamical Economic Modeling (A), Industrial Organization (A), Experimental Economics (A), Econometric & Data Science Methods (A), MA Game Theory (A), PhD Micro II (A), Honors Thesis (A). Math Courses: Honors Calc I-II (C, C-), Calc III (A), Intro to Proofs (A), Abstract Linear Algebra (A), Real Analysis I-III (accelerated/regular) (A-/A), Topology (A), Algebra I (A-), Honors Probability (A-), Measure Theory (A-), ODEs (A-), MA Mathematical Statistics (A-). LOR's: I had one strong letter from my thesis advisor when applying to a masters program, not sure about PhD programs later on. Will hopefully have 2 strong letters from RA position at a top predoc program. All are senior faculty. Research Experience: 2-year RA, Honors Thesis and 3 individual research term papers (50+ pages each). Awards: Outstanding thesis prize Research Interests: Not sure yet Applying to: Not sure yet --------------------------- I would like to get some advice for what courses to take based on my profile in the coming two years during my RA. Currently I'm trying to choose between: Functional Analysis Dynamical Systems PhD Metrics I-III PhD Micro III PhD Macro I-III Machine Learning Algorithms Measure-theoretic probability MA Big Data and Economics MA microeconometrics I'm leaning towards PhD metrics in my first year and time-permitting, functional analysis. Then, machine learning and algorithms in my second year and perhaps PhD macro. I'm also unsure which is better: An A- in a class like PhD metrics or functional analysis or an A in a class that is slightly easier, like MA metrics. I'm also unsure if it's necessary to build a profile with an obvious field of interest by taking classes that are relevant to the field. I am taking a maximum of 6 classes per year. Thanks for any suggestions, especially if they are classes I have not considered or listed.
  2. The following are topics included in the course that I'm considering taking: "Metric spaces, differentiation of functions of several real variables, the implicit and inverse function theorems, Riemann integral on Rn, Lebesgue measure on Rn, and the Lebesgue integral." Is it worth taking? I already took Honors Analysis 1 and received a good grade. The course topics included are: "Properties of the real number system, sequences, continuous functions, topology of the real line, compactness, derivatives, the Riemann integral, sequences of functions, uniform convergence, infinite series and Fourier series." Thanks.
  3. Type of Undergrad: Economics B.S. at regional university Undergrad GPA: 4.0/4.0 Type of Grad:N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 157Q Math Courses: Cal I - III, Differential Equations, Statistics Econ Courses: Econometrics, Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis, Intermediate Macroeconomic Analysis, other elective economics courses Letters of Recommendation: Should be strong Research Experience: Two conference presentations of original research. Concerns: GRE quant score is a problem. I do well in math classes but found the timing on the GRE difficult and didn't feel a retake would have helped score any. Applying to: I understand the competitiveness of these programs and realize the GRE will likely screen me out of some programs. Applying to a wide range of schools.
  4. At this point this is just a timekiller for me, and something to basically make myself sweat a little more for the next month or two. All but one application has been submitted. Type of Undergrad: B.A. Economics with Honors, B.A Math (Top 15 Public University, top 15 econ dept) Undergrad GPA: 3.68 overall, 3.7 in major Type of Grad:N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 167 V, 170Q, 5.5 W Math Courses: Multivariable Calculus (C, first semester of freshman year was rough), Linear Algebra and Differential Equations (A), Real Analysis (A), Complex/Functional Analysis (B), Math Logic (A), Modern Algebra (A), Prob Theory (B), Math of Finance (Stochastic Calculus, A-) Econ Courses (undergrad+grad): Honors Macro (A-), Honors Micro(A), Intro Metrics (A), Game Theory (A), Honors Thesis (A-), Behavioral Econ (A), PhD Econometrics (B), International Econ (A-), Numerical Methods for Macro (A-) Further Edu: A couple Post-Bacc classes at top 5 econ university Letters of Recommendation: Thesis advisor (very prominent macroeconomist/econometrician), one very strong letter from the labor economist I RA for at a Fed Bank, one strong letter from the econometrician I RA for at a Fed Bank Research Experience: Full time RA in the research department at a Fed bank for 3 years, extensive experience in a variety of research projects, coauthored paper in progress, many independent write-ups, but no fully independent, full research projects. Teaching Experience: N/A Research Interests: Macro/empirical labor, game theory, behavioral Statement of Purpose: Fairly strong I think, edited by professors in various top departments, each tailored to the specific school (but no requests to work with specific profs) Concerns: A couple spotty math grades/slightly iffy GPA, little tangible research output Coding skills: Quite experienced in Stata, R, LaTex, Matlab Applying to: Most of the top 20 in US + LSE
  5. You know the drill. I'll emphasize my worse grades are concentrated in my first and second year. Type of Undergrad: 4th Year at a Top 5/10 US Uni Undergrad GPA: Economics and Math, 3.82 GRE: 169 Q, 163 V, 6 AWA Math Courses First Year- Honors Multi (A), Honors Lin Alg (A-), DiffEq (A-) Second Year- Analysis (A-/A), Probability (A), Advanced Econometrics (A/B+) (emphasis that this was my second year) Third Year- Honors Topology (A-), Graduate Seminar (A), Modern Algebra (A-) Fourth Year- Probably something fun Economics Courses First Year- Intro Micro (B+), Intermediate Micro (B+) (not good) Second Year- Intermediate Macro (A), Honors Game Theory (A), Advanced Game Theory (A) Third Year- Advanced Macro (A), five field courses (all As) Fourth Year- Registered for another field course, Grad Micro Research and Work Have been working with a well known economist for 1.5 years, will be two once I finish up my fourth year TAed four or five times for math department LORs One from the well known professor I work with Two from two other well known professor who know me well Publications Co-authorship on two or three papers with my Professor SOP Not sure what to write honestly, my interests are varied. Schools I'll apply to Probably Top 10s, but do I have a chance? Some grades could be a bit better
