  1. Hi everyone, Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I searched around through past threads for a bit, and couldn't exactly find what I was looking for, which is some help in selecting schools I should apply to next year from the preliminary list I have at the moment, with a focus in IO. I've looked at a lot of rankings online but I feel like I've narrowed down my list as much as possible without others' input. I know that for IO, business school programs tend to have quite good faculty and groups (i.e. Booth, Wharton, etc.), but I'm focusing primarily on Economics programs at the moment. After a long time researching these programs, I came up with the following list of 24 schools I'd potentially be interested in applying to: Harvard MIT Berkeley Princeton Chicago Stanford NYU Columbia Yale Brown Boston U Northwestern UCLA U Wisconsin U Maryland U Minnesota UVA Johns Hopkins Vanderbilt Georgetown Penn State Duke U Washington Obviously, the list is ambitious both in sheer number of schools and in their respective rankings. I'm trying to balance applying for the very best programs while also having some programs further down the rankings that I also feel are good schools and I would be comfortable attending (hence why my list is so long at the moment). Without my profile I know it can be difficult to make an assessment as to what schools make sense for me to apply to, so let's just say I feel confident enough that I'm competitive for programs in the top 10 (so I'm not being 100% delusional in being interested in almost all the top 10), such that I feel there's a decent probability I get into at least one of them. I also figured grad school apps is the one moment I shouldn't be too stingy, so money isn't itself that much of a problem and I'd rather give it a shot at a good number of the top programs. Having said that, based on my interest in IO, are there any schools from the list above that I should definitely not remove from my list, as I try to cull down my list to 15-20 schools? Are there any that you feel I should be comfortable removing? For example, I think Northwestern's particularly strong in IO, and I've heard good things about Wisconsin in that respect as well. Minnesota, on the other hand, is more of a macro environment. Are there any schools I may be overlooking? Thanks for any help!
  2. Both are quite close in most of the rankings, some rank Rice above CU Boulder(US News) while others rank Cu Boulder better (Repec). CU Boulder Pros - It is really good place to live. Bigger department hence more and diverse faculty especially in IO and Development where my interests lie. Cons: Guaranteed funding only with 3.5 GPA which might get tough at times. Can't think of anything else Rice Pros- The program is attempting to get into top ones and have already hired a few good profs from Penn. Small cohort size and hence possibility of better attention from profs. Cons: To many profs in finance, environment and too few on IO and Development. Houston gets hot at time. Very few academic placements in past. So guys based on this and more information that you might have what will be better. I can really see the potential of Rice but the lack of profs and placements scares me. Rice seems to be risky with high payoff if it works whereas Boulder just seems to be a safe bet.
  3. I have been looking at a range of schools in the top 50 economics programs. I am interested in applied research questions with behavioral elements. Usually questions that involve markets (financial markets, auctions, etc.) but also areas that have been affected by different forms of policy and regulation (Environment, energy, industry etc.). I think theory is interesting as well. My ideal school/advisor would have research that spans many different topics answering interesting applied questions and also does some theory projects (more applied though). There is no buzzword for my research interests, which is a problem when looking for well known researchers I would like to study under. Someone interested in macro for example can look through macro subdivisions at top schools, or citations for macro papers. I would really appreciate some suggestions of active researchers at different top 50 programs whose research lines up with my description above. If no economists come to mind, then some schools in general that would be good for my research interests would help. I have been spending way too much time trying to figure this out on my own, so it would save me a lot of stress if you guys could help me out. Thanks!
  4. Hey guys! I'd appreciate some help in making this decision. I'm interested in pursuing behavioral/experimental econ/IO. I've gotten into the above schools - Ohio State, UVA, George Mason, Arizona, GA State, Pitt (no funding yet), and UCSB (no funding). I'd really appreciate any info you guys have about the programs or any advice you might have in helping me make this decision! Literally any info would be helpful - emphasis of the department, relationships with professors, how math-heavy or psychological the programs are, etc. THANK YOU!
