  1. Hi, I am interested in applying for Ph.D in Information Systems and I'd like to know what's my edge for getting into top program. I acknowledge that my GRE is a little shy of good score (esp. quant... I had full mark score but the verbal part is not competitive) but a professor that I am working with said I might get some advantages that I have MSCS from prestigious school and I can include working paper when I apply. However, I still cannot even weigh my chances because of lack of data & information. Here's my brief profile. Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): (Note: It often helps a lot more if you list the percentiles each of your raw/composite scores are associated with) GRE: Verbal 158, Quant: 167, GMAT conversion (from ETS): 700 Undegrad GPA: 92.8% (dual degree in Computer Engineering & Business Administration, out of US) Graduate GPA: 3.56/4 (Master's Science in Computer Science, school from undoubtably top 30 in CS, in the US) Research Experience: One domestic(non-English) conference publication in Computer Science, currently working on a research in Information Systems field with two professors. Teaching Experience: None Work Experience: only internships Concentration Applying to: Information Systems Number of programs planned to apply to: 10 Dream Schools: NYU, MIT, CMU, UPenn (I haven't explored the faculties though) What is average GMAT/GRE score for top-school accepted students? I have concentrated on machine learning during my master, will it make some differences? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hi, I will be applying this year for the doctoral program in MIS, looking for honest feedback and suggestions regarding my profile. Education Background: Undergrad: BS Economics (Top 3 college in my country) GPA: 4.0 (Converted my grades to US point system, though not sure if the conversion is accurate) Grad School : MS Economics (Top university in my country) GPA: 3.6/4.0 RA Experience: Full Time Research experience in Economics for 1.5 years. TA Experience: Nil Work Experience: 1 year Industry experience in the Financial Services Industry (Big 4 company) Test Scores GRE: Q-169/V-155/AWA-4.5 Test Scores TOEFL: Total 106 Research Interest Some of the research themes I find interesting and would like to pursue are: Economics Of Information Systems: pricing of IT services and products, Online Labor markets, product diffusion of IT goods. Peer influence in social networks: Social and observational learning of new technologies facilitated through social networks, behavioral Impacts of social networks and online communities. Online Marketing: Impact of word of mouth on online sales, In app advertisement, Impact of recommender systems on revenue of sellers. IT governance: Gray markets and piracy impact on sale of IT goods. Concentration Applying to : Management Information Systems Planning to apply to UT-Austin, University of Minnesota, UT-Dallas, University of Arizona, Carnegie Mellon University, NYU – Stern, Temple University, Arizona State University, University of Florida, UofMaryland College Park, U of Washington Seattle, USC Marshall, U of Pittsburgh, McGill University, Singapore Management University. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? Most of the doctoral students in MIS seem to be either from Technology or management background, would my degree in economics hurt my chances of securing an admission? I have chosen the schools to apply based on my research fit, however, not sure if I am applying to places which are out of my league. Would appreciate suggestions of safer schools given my research interest.
  3. Hi. I am planning to apply for the business school doctoral programs, specifically for the (management) information systems major. I have to finish my applications until this December and I would appreciate any type of advice or commentary regarding my admission possibilities. Basic Info Type of Undergrad: Business Administration major (Top 5 university in my country) Undergrad GPA: 3.64/4.0 Type of Grad: Business School, Management Information Systems major (Top university in my country) Grad GPA: 3.58/4.0 (I still have my last semester left, but this is my latest GPA) Research Experience: Research in Progress Paper submitted to an international conference (First Author) Teaching Experience: Only worked several times as a teaching assistant, but none as a lecturer Work Experience: None (I don't have any work experience, and started my bachelor program directly after my graduation. I am not sure if this works as an advantage or a disadvantage.) Requirements Test Scores GMAT: Verbal 34 / Quant 50 / Total 700 / AWA 4.5 / IR 7 Test Scores TOEFL: Total 116 (All subjects are 29) Research Interest: Data Mining and Big data analysis. My research interests are mainly in the intersection between social and technical aspects of information technology, especially extracting managerial insights from big, unstructured data. Courses Information Systems (Major): IS Seminar (4/4), IS Methodology (3.72/4), Electronic Commerce (3.72/4), IS Development (3.72/4), IS Research(3.44/4) Statistics: Quant (3.72/4), Statistics (Planning to take in next semester) Programming: Social Data Mining (4/4), Social Computing (3.44/4) Applying to Dream schools: University of Arizona, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Texas-Austin, University of Maryland at College Park, University of Georgia, Indiana University at Bloomington (These are the schools that I am interested in. I would like to hear realistic comments about whether to search for more schools.) +) I am worried about my overall profile, but my time is limited and I am not sure where to focus on more. (Should I take GMAT again and raise my scores or should I focus on my research and start on a research paper?) Again, any type of advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

  5. First time poster. Teaching and research have always been something I have wanted and I'm not getting any younger. Does anyone have insight into moving from industry (15 years doing software design and ERP implementations; M.S. in Information Systems Engineering) into a phd program?
  6. Hello! I am a fresh Computer Science graduate with low CGPA and I am planning to do MS in Management Information System from USA.Which are the top universities in USA that are offering this degree program? Also my goal is to get scholarship and for that I need a good GRE score. Please tell me how much my good GRE score can compensate my bachelor's GPA in order to get scholarship?
  7. Hello everyone After lurking around the forum for more than an year finally I have created an account. I will be applying for Phd programs in Information Systems for fall 2014. I will be applying for around 15 programs across north america including the top ones. I do know that MIS is a field which doesn't evoke much interest to most applicants here and there have been quite a few threads about the declining job market for MIS Phd's, but I am motivated to pursue a research career in this field, publishing hopefully in the top 3 journals (MISQ, ISR, Management Science). If there are any other MIS aspirants, then feel free to post here. I will be giving my GMAT and TOEFL in the summer, currently building my research experience. Cheers gc
