  1. Is it a downside if the professors you are most interested in working with at a program are young and recently hired? I feel like plus side is they're actively engaged in research, at the edge of the field, and probably interested in working together, which all seem like huge advantages. But, if they have little experience advising and no history placing advisees in good positions is that a big risk?
  2. Hello, I am a foreign pharmacy graduate tutoring for NAPLEX from 2016. Doing one on one tutoring online and in person. Will be helping for FPGEE with 5$/hr one on one classes.
  3. Hi guys, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to help me with the following question: What are the signs of the research topics that are "dead," i.e., not interested by editors and thus very unlikely to publish papers on? And what are the signs of those topics that are hot and "sexy" for editors? I've heard that, for example, strategic processes are not a topic interested by scholars anymore. Also, various aspects of corporate strategy, like acquisitions, are very well-studied, meaning that it'd be potentially much harder to publish something meaningful on them. How could I know if a certain research topic is interested by editors/scholars in strategy and that there's a gap (and thus opening room for publishing papers)? I'm interested in, or even fascinated by, many topics in the field, like corporate strategy, corporate governance, organizational structure, organizational design, market structure, market entry, competitive dynamics, RBV/KBV/dynamic capabilities, institutional theory, network theory, and so on. But just don't know which ones of these research interests are worth exploring further or are more "worth studying" than the others, i.e., can lead to research papers on good journals. Thx for reading and time!
  4. Hello All, I am interested in part-time phd economics programs in the USA. Though I am more interested in programs around DC, Virginia and Maryland am open country wide. I would appreciate if people shared the part time programs they know of given that I didn't get a good result on google search. Thanks

  7. Hi, I applied to a dutch management PhD programme and had a Skype interview with them a couple of days ago. It is for a particular PhD vacancy against an identified project I am really interested in pursuing. The interview was mostly focused around my reasons for pursuing a PhD and why at that particular school. I believe they are interviewing multiple candidates and told that they would get back in a few days. Also there would be an "assessment" if they decide to proceed with my candidature. Does anyone have any idea what these assessments check (Technical skills or just psychological tests) ? I am really interested in the project and was wondering if its common to interview multiple candidates ? Thanks for your time?
  8. Currently choosing between UCI and UNC. The funding at UCI is a solid amount more and I don't have to teach for a couple of years. They also have subsidized housing which makes it easier to live there. UNC's offer isn't as good but includes fellowships in the summer. I'm interested in labor and empirical IO. Not sure which one I value over the other one yet. Also, I am interested in an industry job, so rankings are not as important. I'm pretty split down the middle currently, anyone have any opinions?
  9. I am interested in macro, international economics, macro-finance. Given i get admitted to both, with full funding, which one should i choose? I know Frankfurt is very big in macro, but how about DIW/BDFEMS? I prefer Berlin (city-wise) over Frankfurt 1923838 times but as someone who isn't so interested in academia but rather at policy institutes / central banks, this is a tough decision for me. Phd is a grueling process so i think where i live matter in terms of my quality of life but also i understand some location advantage of Frankfurt cannot be ignored and their job placement history is quite impressive and pretty much what i want after graduating... help will be much appreciated.

  12. Hello! Hoping to get suggestions on what types of PhD programs in business to apply to given that... I'm interested in the following application areas: negotiations, M&A, corporate strategy However, I'm specifically interested in applying alternative/rigorous quantitative approaches to the areas, such as: machine & deep learning simulation game theory & mechanism design algorithm & complexity analysis With these interests, where should I apply? A business Econ PhD program, Operations, Management? On the one hand I'm afraid the focus in management will be too qualitative, and operations too abstract or specific to supply-chain type problems (also not confident I have the background for it), and also not sure if this falls under the scope of economics... If it helps, my background is in mathematical economics and I have industry experience in risk analytics & modeling. Please let me know what you think!
  13. Anybody would like to share a room at AOM? I could barely afford a Sheraton room by my own. Interested folks are welcome.
  14. Some people believe that college students should consider only their own talents and interests when choosing a field of study. Others believe that college students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field. As the saying goes “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life”. Students should definitely choose a field they are interested in. If a student chooses a field that interests him and knows that field will complement his talent, he should without any doubt pursue it. It is not very often that a student chooses a field of study solely because of the availability of jobs in that field and performs exceptionally well, even though he was least interested in that field of study. It is very difficult to give your best when you choose a field that doesn’t interest you. And even though you choose a field keeping your interests aside, there is no guarantee that you will end up getting a job. As the competition in that field of study will be more and if you have not performed well in your college in that field, you may end up getting no jobs at all. Considering a student ends up getting a job in the field he was not very interested in, he may not get the joy working there and later ends up leaving the job for a job that brings him the peace of mind. One may question that in this day and age where money is so important in everyone’s life that we may end up compromising on our interests and go for the field that will, in the end, pay us more. So, the security that at the end of the course a student will have more opportunities to work and earn money can play a big role for many in deciding their field of study. One can pursue his interests like Painting, sketching, and football as his hobbies while working full time in an IT company or any other company for that matter, even though he was not interested in it at first. Sometimes, it a possibility that we are not interested in some field of study because we know very little about it in the beginning, but as we get to know more about it and go deeper and deeper into it we develop a liking towards it and end up doing well. Your field of study should only matter on what your interests are and how well that field complements your talent. Choosing a field that offers more job opportunities does not guarantee a job since you have to do exceptionally well in the field that you are least interested in to even get a shot at the job opportunity. As there is a risk involved in taking the field in which a student is not interested in, he should definitely go for something he is interested in and not compromise his talents.
  15. Hello Everyone, My name is Anil. And i would like to know if anyone is interested in practicing AWA section for GRE. Regards Anil
  16. Hi everyone, I've been accepted to a couple of PhD programs, and would really appreciate any opinions on how to choose. The programs I'm considering are: Toronto UW-Madison Duke UCLA I have not yet completed the visits but will next week. These are all great programs and I'm really happy with all of them (did not expect this to work out this way), yet I'm struggling making a choice. I'm interested in applied micro, and I don't think any single place clearly dominates (though maybe I'm wrong). One important idiosyncrasy. One PI in my current research group (Im an RA) is at one of these institutions. The PI has made a very strong pitch for me attending, offering to work on new projects, mentioning RAships as a possibility, and has been very supportive. I'm interested in the work the PI does and think its fascinating, there are plenty of projects to try out. Obviously, this has been a major factor in my thinking. PhDs are hard, and I figure that having an established prof 'on your side' and willing to engage with you is a big positive. I'm just curious to hear perspectives on how much importance this should have. Does it make a no brainer, does it not? Thanks, really appreciate any perspective here.
  17. Just curious what others are interested in. I thought market design and mechanism design were pretty esoteric but from comments on this and other sites I think many of you may also be interested in these fields. If so, why? If not, what are your fields of interest?

  19. Hi all, So my school allows me to replace the intermediate macro requirement for the econ major with PhD Macro 1. From what I've heard, the materials covered by the two courses are fairly disjoint, with the intermediate macro course covering IS/LM and the phd course covering dynamic programming-type DSGE models. I'm planning on taking the PhD Macro course for 1) signalling and 2) preparing myself better for the first year in a PhD program, since I will have seen the mathematical techniques used in Macro before (dynamic programming is also relevant for structural IO, which I'm interested in). Could anyone who has taken both chimed in about this? Will I be at any significant disadvantage for not having taken intermediate macro before the PhD class? I know it will be hard, but I'm pretty good at math and programming so I think it will be doable if I put in the effort. As far as research interests go, I am not interested in macro (more interested in applied micro/structural IO), so I don't think any intuition lost from not taking the intermediate class will be too detrimental for me personally, if I never end up using macro in my work. Thank you! Pulsars
  20. Hello all, I am interested in the program at UMass Amherst and wonder what you think of job prospects after attending such a university. The placement that they show on their website seems relatively good--Howard, Duke, Oxford, etc. I am interested in a job as a professor. Can you give your ideas below? Thanks, Lindsey

  23. Accounting hopeful here, I'm trying to finish up my personalized portion of my SOPs for a few schools that I really want to go to, like these are my dream schools. Upon reviewing the department websites there are a few professors whose research really interests me but I have no way of knowing if they are involved with the Phd program. Should I mention my interest in their research specifically or will that hurt me if they aren't working with the program? Also there are multiple professors at one program that in interested in so could I mention maybe 2 of them in hopes that at least one is working with PhD students? I have no research experience so I want my SOP to drive home that I at least kinda know what research is and what I'm interested in without being too specific and I figure showing I read a few articles from current professors may help but I could be wrong.
