  1. So I am interested in macro theory and poverty, and there are several professors in my department in this field. My interests align more with two professors, but another one has a substantially better publication record (though it's primarily in housing, which I do not find interesting). This third professor also coauthors with more people from other institutions (Top 30 schools, Fed, etc), and has being published several times in top 5 journals in the last 2 years or so. Is it worth trying to work with him even if my research interests don't totally align with him? I'm guessing I would learn how to do better research from him and have a more recognized advisor when entering the job market. What should I do? Is there overlap between these areas?
  2. I mean, since doing ra is almost always about doing data related work (at least from what I've heard), do I need to worry about if there's a match between the professor's research interests and mine? If there were no match in terms of interest, what would happen? And if there were, what else could happen? Thx for reading!
  3. Hello! I was kindly wondering how I should prepare for a Skype interview. I have generally been preparing by talking about my research interests/past projects and then try to relate my interests to the professors' interests or past publications. Would this be a good strategy or would you recommend that I do something else along with? Thanks!
  4. Hello! I'm looking for advice on what kinds of programs to apply to given the interdisciplinary nature of my interests: I'm interested in how we can use game theory & mechanism design to augment other areas, like machine reasoning and multiagent modeling Methods I am enthusiastic about: - machine learning - algorithm analysis - simulation techniques Potential application areas: - negotiations, conflict resolution - corporate strategy and M&A I've thought about business PhD programs in economics, operations management, and management so far. What do you guys think? Would love any input.
  5. Some people believe that college students should consider only their own talents and interests when choosing a field of study. Others believe that college students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field. As the saying goes “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life”. Students should definitely choose a field they are interested in. If a student chooses a field that interests him and knows that field will complement his talent, he should without any doubt pursue it. It is not very often that a student chooses a field of study solely because of the availability of jobs in that field and performs exceptionally well, even though he was least interested in that field of study. It is very difficult to give your best when you choose a field that doesn’t interest you. And even though you choose a field keeping your interests aside, there is no guarantee that you will end up getting a job. As the competition in that field of study will be more and if you have not performed well in your college in that field, you may end up getting no jobs at all. Considering a student ends up getting a job in the field he was not very interested in, he may not get the joy working there and later ends up leaving the job for a job that brings him the peace of mind. One may question that in this day and age where money is so important in everyone’s life that we may end up compromising on our interests and go for the field that will, in the end, pay us more. So, the security that at the end of the course a student will have more opportunities to work and earn money can play a big role for many in deciding their field of study. One can pursue his interests like Painting, sketching, and football as his hobbies while working full time in an IT company or any other company for that matter, even though he was not interested in it at first. Sometimes, it a possibility that we are not interested in some field of study because we know very little about it in the beginning, but as we get to know more about it and go deeper and deeper into it we develop a liking towards it and end up doing well. Your field of study should only matter on what your interests are and how well that field complements your talent. Choosing a field that offers more job opportunities does not guarantee a job since you have to do exceptionally well in the field that you are least interested in to even get a shot at the job opportunity. As there is a risk involved in taking the field in which a student is not interested in, he should definitely go for something he is interested in and not compromise his talents.
  6. Would you turn down a top 20 for a top 50 because the uni has supervisors aligned with your research interests? Or am I going crazy and being irrational?
  7. I am interested in micro theory (I know that it is harder to get a job in this field), but typically I feel departments outside the top 10 will not place well if you are a theorist. Thus the department, which wants to place as well as possible, will be hesitant to admit a student who expresses a particular interest in theory if the department is lower ranked (outside the top 20 for instance). Do you guys think that this kind of reasoning enters the minds of adcoms? If so, is it better to not mention theory interests? What if your letters may mention this? On the other hand, perhaps these schools are less likely to get theory students, and have theory faculty that may wish that there were more in the program.
  8. Hello, I wrote a TOEFL essay and whould be much appreciated if you took a look and provided your opinion on it. Any remarks on grammar, spelling, style, or anything else you find related are welcome. Topic: "Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Businesses should do anything they can to make a profit. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position." Essay: The topic proposes an idea that every business should do anything that will gain a profit apparently implying profit-making business in opposition to non-for-profit businesses, to which the topic is inapplicable. To agree or disagree with the topic it is necessary to state several situations where business interests are conflicting with the interests of other party and then analyze whether it is possible to overstep interests of others to the benefit of oneself. First, if to discern employees as separate from the business they are working in, the conflict of interests of the business and its employees may be a case. For example, some business project may require from the employees working on it to work overtime for several days or maybe work at weekends. It is for sure not in behalf of employees to work extra hours especially if not extra-paid. In general, it is unacceptable to force employees to work overtime, and in some countries it is against the law. However, if employees are paid for the additional work and do not object, then extra-work under these conditions is possible. Also, business interests may conflict with interests of people somehow affected by this business. For example, people living near a night club may be affected by the high noisiness of this club. Or, people living next to a grocery store may be awaken each night by the the noise of cars delivering supplies to that store. In such cases, with no doubt, people's interests should dominate over business's interests. Another example is a conflict of interests of the seller and the buyer. The aim of the seller is to get a maximum profit, which in some cases may be selling poor-quality products by high prices. On the other hand, the aim of the buyer is to find a best quality product and pay for it a minimum price. This conflict may be especially acute if a business is monopolistic. In such case, buyers do not have any alternatives, and if a product is something they cannot live without, they buy it even if it is poorly implemented and expensive. This situation is quite unjust to the customers, which is the reason why many countries fight against monopolies in order to provide healthy concurrence in business. Concurrence leads to improving production quality and abating prices in order to attract customers. In this concurrent environment interests of businesses within a single production category may conflict with each other, and, as previously was states, that is a good for customers. Summarizing, business' interests may sometimes conflict with interests of its own employees, other businesses, or people somehow affected by these businesses. As a general rule, business should not do anything that will infringe interests of either people who work in this business or its customers. And most sides of relations between business and people should be regulated by laws. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks in advance. -- Victor
