  1. Hi everyone, I’m considering applying for the 2019 round at top 15s and would appreciate a profile review. The thing that concerns me the most is my grade in linear algebra, and I don’t know if the rest of my profile is strong enough to overcome my low grade in LA. UG: US Top 50 GPA: 3.9 Grad: Europe Top 10 GPA: 4.0 GRE: 168/166/5.0 Econ Courses: Micro (A+), Macro (A-), Experimental (A+), Environmental (A+), Urban (A+), Health (A+), Developmental (A+), Econometrics (A+), Grad Econometrics (A+), etc. (all A or A+) Math Courses: Calc 1 (A), Calc 2 (A), Calc 3 (A), Linear Algebra (B), Real Analysis (A+), Time Series (A), Math Stats (A) TA/RA: Summer Independent Research with UG prof, 1 year TA at Grad Uni, 6 months RA at Grad Uni, 1 year RA (think NBER) Recommendations: From above RA/TA Professors
  2. I’m sorry if this is the wrong place, I may have misread the rules. I’m going into my senior year at a small liberal arts university in Boston, and I’m beginning the process of applying to graduate programs, with the intention of starting an Economics PhD next fall. I’ve always wanted to be a college professor, and a career in academia, but I spent too much of my undergrad debating between philosophy or economics, so now I’m well behind on math. I will not finish the calc sequence until next semester, and am only taking linear algebra this semester, as a senior. I do have 2 semesters of econometrics, and have all As in the last 7 economics classes (including 4 400 level) and all the math/stats classes I have taken, as well as a 3.86 gpa and a 166Q 162V 5.5AWA GRE. I also have 1 semester of RA experience with a local think tank, and was hired to assist my stats professor this semester as she works on a textbook, and will be a teaching assistant for applied Micro Economics. I’m trying to find programs, specifically ones with a behavior economics focus, despite my limited math background. My dream would be U Chicago or Stanford, but I assume they're not even worth applying to. Right now I’m aiming for UCSB, and UCLA as reach schools, and George Washington as a more reasonable chance. Location means little to me, I care more about the education, and am aware I wouldn't have much time outside of my studies anyway. I’m having trouble finding other schools that don’t require linear algebra by application deadline, and don’t expect real analysis (I just can’t fit it in before graduation), and the professors Im close with are telling me I should aim to apply to 9-12 programs, if I want to maximize my chances of getting into a PhD program. Ideally I would like to start a program in the 2019-2020 school year, because I (possibly wrongly) believe I can handle higher level math given the chance. I don't know that I could afford to get a masters, and governmental/ private sector work doesn't much interest me compared to academia, though I understand beggars can be choosers, and I'd be willing to do any of the 3, but its not ideal to me. The professors I am close to are supportive and seem to believe I have a chance, but I fear they may be biased and overestimate my chances because of the friendly relationship we have. Most of the programs they recommend, or have connections to, have math expectations that exceed what I have taken, and some that even exceed what I will complete by graduation. Does anyone know of any PhD programs that might be acceptant of my limited math background? I've heard cases of students being offered acceptance on the grounds they completed prerequisite bridge programs, and I would be open to that. Thanks in advance!
  3. I am a psychologist planning to take a MA-level microeconomic theory course at a top 20 MA econ program. We will use Jehle and Reny as our textbook. The MA program is distinct from the PhD program at this institution. Is knowledge of linear algebra necessary to complete such a course? I am working my way through Simon and Blume to ensure adequate mathematical preparation, but I am ONLY taking micro and want to figure out if I can skip sections in the book (in particular, matrix/linear algebra and differential equations).
  4. I've been accepted to some fine schools in canada and the uk, canadian schools with full or 75% funding, for masters in econ programs (MA and MSc). I think i got in on the weight of my professor's letters (tenured faculty, prominent in field) but i am realizing that i am very, very ill prepared for the mathematical content of these very theory-heavy and phd-track programs. My math profile: - 1 econometrics (did poorly, a B, but that was after the class average was scaled since almost everyone failed the exam. Although there were 3 people in the 100 person class who got A+ or high As so it was possible) - 1 econ stats class (pre req for metrics, A-, but it was 4 years ago) - 2 intro calc classes (differential vs integral, high A+ in one, high A in other, but 6 years ago) - 1 multivariable calculus class (did terribly, low B-, almost a C, although some of that can be chalked up to hard life circumstances at the time including illness) and that's it. I did the GRE once and got only a 163 quant (extremely high verbal and analytical though). - No linear algebra - No real analysis - No set theory - None proofs-based I honestly don't know how these programs could have accepted me, but they did. And at first i was confident because i got in, but then i realized, looking at the course material for the core courses, that i have absolutely no preparation for even beginning to understand these. I borrowed Mas Collel for two weeks and couldn't grasp any of the material except for memorization. None of my classes were proofs based. Even my micro and macro classes were quite applied in their math. no proofs, we only had to be able to use lagrange method. I'm scared that i'm in over my head. These are all phd-feeder programs and thus rely quite heavily on the advanced theory. I knew that i was already weak given that my math classes were 4-6 years ago and that econometrics never really "clicked" for me, but i'm genuinely worried now that I cannot handle these programs. People keep telling me "oh people go in to these programs with just as little math as you" but i doubt those people stay in these programs. Do I defer for a year? or do i switch into a different field? applied math always made sense to me (just optimize something and then you're done, etc.) but the theory/sets/analysis just never really was emphasized in my education and i never had an easy time (or even doable time) with them. Do I try to learn EVERYTHING and refresh everything else in 2 months? Or do I own up to my lack of preparation and defer?
  5. hello everyone! I wish to take on linear algebra before studying microeconomics at the grad level(Varian) and I am trying to find the right book for self study(I do have knowledge of basic matrix algebra). Do you guys think "Linear algebra done right" is good enough to cover all prerequisite? Its available to me for free. Hass any one heard of ""Advanced Mathematical Methods (London School of Economics Mathematics) Adam Ostaszewski" ? Is it too hard to study? Or does anyone know of some book with solution to exercises? I'll appreciate your advice Thank You
  6. Hello everyone, I want to strengthen my application for the next cycle of economics phd applications by taking math courses. My current math background: solid grades (A) in a few undergraduate courses that basically cover Chiang's textbook taken a decade ago (I am in my early 30s) and an 800 score in the math part of the GRE. This fall I will enroll in a real analysis class at a local university (I will prepare for that through self-study). This summer, given my crazy work schedule, I have two options: an online linear algebra course at EPGY or a matrix algebra class at a local university, which will cover: systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, introduction to vector spaces and linear transformations, applications. I only have time for one of the two options. Which would work best for my application? Any advice welcome!
