I have been looking at US News Rankings, QS, Times etc to get a sense of the overall prestige of business schools in Canada. I also look at the UTD rankings and the PhD placements of those Canadian schools. I think everyone would agree that Toronto is ranked 1, UBC is ranked 2, but the third spot becomes ambiguous. Alberta seems stronger for business research publications, but McGill is a very famous school overall (despite the more mediocre econ and business school). McGill business school is not even AACSB accredited yet (likewise for York). So how to compare Alberta and McGill for PhD Business? Here is my rank based on a combination of factors such as overall ranking/prestige, business school perceived prestige, business research publications (based on UTD), phd placements etc: 1) Toronto 2) UBC 3) McGill 4) Alberta (Alberta could be on the third spot too considering the fact that McGill is not AACSB and is not posting its PhD placements) 5) Western Ontario 6) The rest To be honest, I find it quite hard to rank Canadian schools after UT and UBC. What do you guys think?

I am an applicant from Hong Kong. I hope I can get some advice about my profile. Any suggestion is welcomed! Type of Undergrad: Top 3 department in Hong Kong. Year exchange at McGill. Undergrad GPA: Hong Kong: 3.8/4 (I am not sure about the ranking, but I have never found somebody in my department with a higher GPA. Perhaps top 5%) McGill: 3.94/4 Type of Grad: none GRE: 150V, 168Q, 4AW TOEFL: 110 Econ Courses: HK: Econ stat (A-), Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A-), undergard econometrics (A-), Public Finance (A), grad econometrics (currently taking) McGill: Advanced Micro-honuors (A with average B+), Advanced Macro-honuors (A with average B), Game Theory-honours (A with average B+), Monetary Econ-honours (A average unknown), IO (A with average B), Money and Banking (A with average B). Math Courses: HK: Stochastic Calculus and Probability Theory (currently taking), Stochastic Processes (currently taking) McGill: Calculus 3 (A with average B-), LA1 (A with average B+), ODE (A with average B-), Probability (A- with average C) UIUC Netmath: Real Analysis (A) Research Experience: · RA for my grad econometrics teacher for 4 months. Mostly literature review and programming work. · Currently writing my final year paper in macro with a full professor. Teaching experience: None Research Interest: Macro, Finance. I think my interest should be theoretical. Letter: · My grad econometrics teacher and my RA boss. (Top 5 PhD grad. Assistant professor but with nice publication) · My final year paper advisor (Full Professor) · A full professor at McGill. I only took a course taught by him and got an A. · Undergrad programme coordinator (Top 10 PhD grad. Senior Lecturer but should have decent track record for master’s). I performed well in a course taught by him and he should remember me as an ambitious student in the programme. The first 2 letters should be strong. The last 2 as you can easily see is weaker. Schools going to apply: My final target is to get into a top Econ or Finance department, but I know Asian students’ optimal strategy is to get a master’s first. I will still give a try to top schools, but the expected outcome is master’s. Master’s: Chicago MAPSS (my top choice!) Oxford MPhil LSE EME LSE Finance and Economics U of T MA UBC MA PhD: Princeton Chicago MIT Stanford Questions: What are my chances of getting into the master’s? Any chance on PhD? What schools should I also apply, given my profile and interest? Any comment welcomed!! I have learnt a lot from this forum. Thank you very much for all your inputs!!

Hi, so I was accepted to a number of top canadian economics programs this year (the top 3) but i've decided to defer by a year. I'm beginning to wonder whether it might be wiser for me to go for an applied economics program instead of the pure economics streams given my interests and strengths. At the time of application i hadn't realized how much the top three programs focus on theory/mathematical econ, and my interests had never been in those streams as much as they had been on things like policy and applied economic research. I no longer intend to pursue a PhD in Economics, so the relative ranking of the different programs doesn't matter so much anymore. I am not sure which schools offer a more applied economics program and aside from a few schools with explicit "applied econ" named programs (regina, etc.) I am a bit directionless on this. Would McGill be an applied econ school, for example? I know that Mcmaster offers an MA in Applied Economic Policy specifically which seems interesting, and that Dalhousie offers a Master in Development Economics which I imagine would be more on the applied side. I guess I'm wondering 1) what schools in Canada would be good for more applied economic programs (I have strong grades and was admitted to the "top 3" canadian schools for regular MA so i think i'd get in to the others) 2) what exactly I could expect as the difference between the programs---would it just mean that the micro and macro courses would be less proofs based and more calculation based?

I have applied for PhD (fall 2014) at McGill university materials engineering department. Hopefully I will get an offer. I just wanted to know from any current PhD student or anyone about doing PhD at McGill. Will it be a good decision, considering I get the offer? I would like to be in academic environment in future. Also if I get an offer for phd from materials engineering department, Northwestern university, which one will be a better option out of the two?
