Hi all! I'm applying to econ phd this cycle and here's a question I have regarding sop: Should I mention faculty members that I want to work with in sop? It seems people do this all the time but My professor told me this usually wouldn't do much good as anyone can just google for 5 min and drop down some names GS Lab RA manual also recommend against this (PhD Application * gslab-econ/ra-manual Wiki * GitHub)

Hello everyone, Apologies if this question has already been asked but I've been unable to find the thread if it has. When submitting a statement of purpose, is it generally recommended that you start off with "Statement of Purpose", include your name, the department that you're applying to or anything like that? I mean outside the main body of text as a title or header, obviously you mention where you're applying to in the statement itself. Or do most people just submit it as an unformatted essay (apart from paragraphs) on the basis that all of the other information is linked to your application online?

Hi guys, I am finishing up my SOP for all my applications. Originally, my plan was to mention one professor at each program in my SOP. At some schools, there were actually at least one professor whose research is very aligning with my future interests. In that case, I obviously mentioned their names and their works. However, at other schools, there are professors who definitely seem to be capable of advising me but not researching the very specific topic that I plan on researching. Obviously, my research interest might change over time so I don't want to just cut out those schools that do not have professors who are researching in that very specific topic. But as I am writing, I realized that it doesn't really make sense to mention their names if their work is not specifically aligning with my future interests that I mention in SOP. What do you guys think? Should I just talk about my future interests and end it there?

Hi everyone, I am currently a junior and taking intermediate macro theory this semester. I am a math and econ double major. But the problem is that this professor who's teaching my intermediate macro is just giving everyone a very hard time and no one is doing too well (he's on his two-year term at my school and this is his last semester lol). I was wondering if dropping this class and getting a W in it would significantly hurt my chances of getting to top 20 phd programs? I will be re-taking the course with my advisor in the coming fall, and I expect to do well in that class maybe my advisor could even mention in the recommendation letter that I am doing it fine (assuming that I do) in that class. Let me know what you guys think! FYI: I have gotten good grades in other challenging courses including multivariable calculus, real analysis, comp sci courses, etc.

I am interested in micro theory (I know that it is harder to get a job in this field), but typically I feel departments outside the top 10 will not place well if you are a theorist. Thus the department, which wants to place as well as possible, will be hesitant to admit a student who expresses a particular interest in theory if the department is lower ranked (outside the top 20 for instance). Do you guys think that this kind of reasoning enters the minds of adcoms? If so, is it better to not mention theory interests? What if your letters may mention this? On the other hand, perhaps these schools are less likely to get theory students, and have theory faculty that may wish that there were more in the program.

Hi everyone, Quick question: If applying to a joint program such as OB which has tracks specializing in micro (psychology) or macro (sociology), is it good to also mention a professor from that department (psy/soc) if they are relevant to my research? Thanks!
