  1. PROFILE:Type of Undergrad: B.S. Math, B.A. Econ with honors, T10 Undergrad GPA: 3.45 (econ: 3.93, math: 3.87). First year GPA was extremely low with several Ds/Fs. Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA :N/A GRE: Q170, V165, AW5.5 Econ Courses: Honors Intermediate Micro (A), Honors Intermediate Macro (A), Honors Econometrics (A), Auction Theory (A), Dynamical Economic Modeling (A), Industrial Organization (A), Experimental Economics (A), Econometric & Data Science Methods (A), MA Game Theory (A), PhD Micro II (A), Honors Thesis (A). Math Courses: Honors Calc I-II (C, C-), Calc III (A), Intro to Proofs (A), Abstract Linear Algebra (A), Real Analysis I-III (accelerated/regular) (A-/A), Topology (A), Algebra I (A-), Honors Probability (A-), Measure Theory (A-), ODEs (A-), MA Mathematical Statistics (A-). LOR's: I had one strong letter from my thesis advisor when applying to a masters program, not sure about PhD programs later on. Will hopefully have 2 strong letters from RA position at a top predoc program. All are senior faculty. Research Experience: 2-year RA, Honors Thesis and 3 individual research term papers (50+ pages each). Awards: Outstanding thesis prize Research Interests: Not sure yet Applying to: Not sure yet --------------------------- I would like to get some advice for what courses to take based on my profile in the coming two years during my RA. Currently I'm trying to choose between: Functional Analysis Dynamical Systems PhD Metrics I-III PhD Micro III PhD Macro I-III Machine Learning Algorithms Measure-theoretic probability MA Big Data and Economics MA microeconometrics I'm leaning towards PhD metrics in my first year and time-permitting, functional analysis. Then, machine learning and algorithms in my second year and perhaps PhD macro. I'm also unsure which is better: An A- in a class like PhD metrics or functional analysis or an A in a class that is slightly easier, like MA metrics. I'm also unsure if it's necessary to build a profile with an obvious field of interest by taking classes that are relevant to the field. I am taking a maximum of 6 classes per year. Thanks for any suggestions, especially if they are classes I have not considered or listed.
  2. I’ve taken the PhD sequence in Micro and Metrics at my unranked university and received A’s. Textbooks were Greene and Wooldridge for Metrics and MWG for Micro. As for math, I’ve taken multivariate calculus, Linear Alg I-II, Diff Eq, Probability, Math Stats, Real Analysis I-II, Set Theory, Topology, and grad lebesgue theory. (A’s in all classes). For research, I've RA'ed for a few years with two professors and did a senior thesis on an empirical topic. I'm graduating with a B.S. in Mathematics and Economics. During my pre-doc RA stint at a Fed bank, I have the opportunity to take some courses at a T40 program. If you could pick two courses from below, what would you advise? My interests are in Micro and Metrics. Grad topology Grad functional analysis Grad complex analysis Measure theoretic probability Abstract Algebra PhD Micro I (again, but this time at a better institution) Other (something else)
  3. Can anyone tell me how competitive this profile would be for UC Irvine to apply this fall and start next fall? School: large research state school/university with not much of a ranking for economics UG GPA: 3.35ish Grad GPA thus far: 3.8 without 2014 metrics class (somehow tacked onto my grad GPA) or 3.55ish with 2014 metrics class (which I'm currently retaking and doing above average so far) Math courses after UG in 2014 (all UG level): Linear Algebra (A-), Intro to Advanced Math (A-), Calculus IV (A-), Elementary Prob & Stats (A), Introduction to Real Analysis (currently taking), Introduction to Differential Equations (will take this fall) Economics courses after UG in 2014 (all grad level): Mathematics for Economics (A), Microeconomics I (A-), Metrics I (currently taking), Microeconomics II (currently taking), Experimental Economics (currently taking), Macroeconomics I (will take this fall), Metrics II (will take this fall), Macroeconomics II (will take next spring), Research Capstone (will take next spring) Teaching experience: currently a TA for Principles of Microeconomics (spring 2021) Research experience: currently working on my research capstone project (on experimental economics pertaining to antitrust and industrial organization) as well as a project with a more senior student (very avid researcher) who is about to graduate with a phd at my institution (on some inequalities in sports pertaining to soccer clubs), and I should have some kind of writing sample from both in time for the December 1 deadline to apply Computer skills: LaTeX, some RStudio, some Python, some Stata GRE scores: expecting 169+ for Q, 162+ for V, and 5.0+ for writing It would be neat to hear your opinions on how this might fare for UC Irvine...
  4. Hello all, I am currently finishing up a four year BA/MA program at a top CUNY school (but unknown nationally). PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA/MA degrees in Economics and Math Minor Undergrad GPA: 3.78 Type of Grad: MA degree (1 year) Grad GPA: 3.84 GRE: 169 Q 165 V Math Courses(list the grades for each course): Multivariable Calc (A), Linear Algebra (P - covid), Intro to Proofs (A+), Matrix Algebra (A), Real Analysis (A) Econ Courses Undergrad(list the grades for each course): Micro A, Macro A, Trade A, Urban A, Metrics B+, Environmental A, IO A Econ Courses Msc(list the grades for each course): Micro A-, Macro A-, Metrics 1 A, Metrics 2 A, Development A-, Transition A, Microeconometrics IP, Advanced Concepts in Finance IP, Inequality IP, Thesis IP Other Courses: Letters of Recommendation: 1 Strong from dept. chair who I took a graduate independent study course with, 1 strong from graduate metrics prof/thesis advisor who has seen me do research, 1 very strong from a professor whom I've been co-authoring a paper with Research Experience: Summer volunteer research gig that turned into a short term consultancy with the world bank and an opportunity to work on and coauthor a development/human capital paper. Lots of STATA work on this project. Other than that, a couple of term papers in various grad courses. Teaching Experience: Tutoring for economics department Other (Notes, concerns etc.): I'm looking at programs both in the North America and in Europe, particularly: Berkeley ARE, UVA, Boston U, Georgetown, UT Austin, Washington, Brown, USC, UCSB, Wisco, Vanderbilt, UBC, UChicago Harris, Stanfrod GSB Political Econ, Stockholm School of Econ, Bonn MSc Res, Berlin School of Econ, LMU Munich, PSE M2, Toulouse M2, Bocconi PhD, Tinbergen. Any thoughts on my competitiveness for these programs would be greatly appreciated!
  5. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: T60 Public University, BS in Math + BS in Economics Undergrad GPA: 4.0 Type of Grad: n/a Grad GPA: n/a GRE: 170/164/5.5 (Q/V/AW) Math Courses: Calc III, Intro to Proofs, Linear Algebra (two semesters), Real Analysis (two semesters), Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Differential Equations, Topology, Abstract Algebra. Research Experience: 2 years RA for a professor + junior-senior capstone (2 year research project) + NY Fed Intern. Teaching Experience: Experience tutoring but no TA experience. What are my chances at T20-30?
  6. Hi, This may seem very counterintuitive but I am very interested in time series analysis and macro-econometrics. However, in my first year of economics degree in took a rather difficult time series module and got a borderline fail grade. After that I have taken much more complex maths(serious analysis, topology), stats (Brownian motion, probability theory, stochastic processes, stochastic stimulation) and metrics (time series included as part of a broad metrics module - following Hayashi, Brockwell & Davis) modules and received straight As. Now, i have a choice to take a time series module again. Do i take it? Instead of this I could take a math module or a stats module. Thanks
  7. Yale undergrad here. The only beef I have with Princeton is its messy Visit Day which didn't leave good impression on me because I didn't have time for one-on-one faculty meetings and its up-and-down placements. Meanwhile NYU and Yale fare better in terms of placement. Not sure about my interests yet. Probably not Macro theory or Metrics (but might be applied metrics or macro labor/development etc.) Talked to some real nice Yale profs during Visit Day. Would it help career-wise to expand my network outside of Yale?
  8. Out of curiosity, to the current grad students here, how useful is the first year metrics sequence to doing empirical research? I've heard that PhD metrics is pretty theoretical, and I was wondering if that hindered people from using it in empirical work.
