I am planning on applying for an MPhil in Economics for the 2017/18 acad. year. I would appreciate some opinions/ perspective regarding universities. My question is specific to GPA requirements, so I will limit the information below to academic achievements. BSc: Economics, Dutch university, GPA: 7.3/10 (mainly due to bad grades in the first year. Final year GPA was 8.2/10 and thesis 9/10) MSc Economics, Dutch university, GPA 8.2/10 and no course grade below 7.5 and most grades above 8, TAship in the Economics department GRE: V:163 Q:169 AWA:4.5 According to some universities whose entry requirements I checked (mainly in the UK, as that would be my aim), they require a "good 2.1" in an undergraduate degree in economics as a minimum for an MPhil. I looked for Dutch grade conversions and found that e.g. Cambridge translates a 2.1 and a first to an overall Dutch grade of 7.5/10 and 8/10 respectively. So, according to the grade conversion above, I do not even have a 2.1 overall GPA in my bachelor. Logically I know that this means that I should not even bother applying. Questions: Can I compensate for my bachelor GPA with my master degree? Most universities' admission requirements only specify what GPA one should have in an undergraduate degree. Does anyone have any experience in this regard that they could share? General question: Can I aim for top UK universities with these grades? Opinion: Which European universities do you think would be feasible with these grades? Thanks!

Hey everybody, I almost finished my Bachelor's in economics in Maastricht and I am thinking of where to go for Master's program. I definitely want to do something much more technical than in my Bachelor's program; either something like mathematical economics or econometrics (financial econometrics but I am not definitely sure yet). With that I mean that I really want to do more abstract and complicated maths including mathematical proofs, abstract reasoning, etc. I am looking for a top (research) Master's program (2year) and I plan to go to top 20 US school afterwards I know that there are already lots of threads here but I still couldn't find definite answers, especially about the level of tinbergen's advanced econometrics track. GPA: 9/10 GRE quant: 168 What is the best address for Master's program in econometrics (financial econometrics) or mathematical economics in Europe? I applied at LSE, Cambridge, Oxford already. But I am also interested in Bonn, Mannheim, Tinbergen Institute and Tilburg University. What are the chances to go from the German and Dutch unis to top20 grad school in US for PhD in economics? And how technical are these degrees? I heard Bonn and Mannheim are quite good and technical. However, Bonn and Mannheim are both rather weak in Econometrics. Anyone knows more about how good they are in econometrics? I also heard that Tinbergen is very good at econometrics because of its technical and rigorous econometrics track? Anyone has any experience with it? Is it possible to do as "normal" economics graduate to do the "econometrics" track? Or is it too hard? Thank's for your help!!!!

Hi all, I am a long time lurker out here and have been posting a lot lately since I am thinking of applying to grad schools this fall. I want to apply to Masters programs in the UK because I feel that my lack of Real Analysis, Math Stats and other proof-based classes will make it unlikely for me to get into good Ph.Ds. I am hoping that good performance in a good masters program will allow me to strengthen my profile for Ph.D applications in the future. I am considering applying to Oxford's Mphil Economics, Cambridge's Mphil Economics and LSE's Msc Economics. Can you please tell me what you think my chances are at these programs? Also, do you think I can receive funding from these institutions? If so, by how much? Lastly, are there any other programs that I should consider given my profile? Type of Undergrad: Top 30 US Liberal Arts college Major: Mathematical Economics GPA: Cumulative 3.81, Econ 3.94, Math 3.8 GMAT: 740 (I plan on taking the GRE this summer. I feel that I will be able to get a good score with preparation) Math Classes: Calculus I II III (A-, A, B+), Linear Algebra (A-), Number Theory (B), Ordinary Differential Equations (A), Partial Differential Equations (A), Probability Theory (A), Probability and Statistical Modeling (A), Stochastic Processes (A), Numerical Analysis (A). Econ Classes: Intermediate Micro (B+), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A), Advanced Econometrics (A), Mathematical Economics (A), Labor Economics (A), International Finance (A), International Trade (A), Environmental Economics (A) Research Experience: Wrote a thesis that won the award for most outstanding senior thesis. Advisor was impressed and we are trying to publish the work. I have also worked as a research assistant for three other professors, with one professor publishing the paper I helped him with. The work with these professors mainly involved writing Stata code, importing and cleaning datasets using excel and SAS, and creating pretty graphs and tables for the final paper. Recommendations:Should get excellent recommendations from all of the professors I researched with, especially my thesis advisor. My thesis advisor, who also taught me two advanced mathematical economics classes, will be able to talk to my aptitude for econometrics and mathematical economics since I aced all of his classes. He also saw me self-teach myself time series econometrics for the thesis. The other recommendation will come from the professor who had published the paper I had RA'd for. He also taught me two econometrics classes, both of which I aced. Teaching Experience: Worked as teaching assistant and grader for multiple economics classes. Also worked as a tutor at the college's mathematics tutoring center for three years. SOP: Not sure yet. Will think of one if I feel that I have a decent shot at getting in.

Hi you all people! First of all, Merry Christmas! Second, I am EU Undergrad currently doing a Bachelor in Economics. I want to do a Master, a PhD and then go on and work in Academia. Moreover, I am a huge fan of the UK so I definitely want to go there for the second part of my education. I am interested in Macro, Monetary Economics and Economic History and I am basically a Keynesian (even if, you know, I take from Keynes the big staples, apart from that I've always been very flexible towards Smith, Friedman so on and so forth). Considering that LSE is too expensive and funding is close to 0 (and that I like much more small cities than some 15-million people metropolis), I've narrowed down my choice to Oxbridge. Now, for what I've learned so far, it seems like the majority of people here love Oxford much more than what they love Cambridge because of this "decline" in Cam Econ Dept. 1) Is this general trend applicable to the three areas I mentioned? 2) If you were to choose between the Ox MPhil and Cam Adv Dipl+MPhil in Econ Research, which one would you choose? Either case, try to put down the reasons for the choice as good as possible :encouragement: 3) I am good at Maths (I got the highest score available in my Maths course covering Functions & Limits, Derivatives & Integrals, Linear Algebra & Multivariable Calculus) even if I fancy it only when it's useful. How difficult is the Maths in these programs? 4) Which department is more on the Keynes side (considering I don't want to get taught for years that an Invisible Hand will solve all problems, if you know what I mean ;)) 5) How hard is getting into these programs but, most of all, SUCCEED? Thanks a bunch for your time and I am looking forward to hearing from you! Bye!
