Hey, I am currently on the waitlist of UCSB and I would really like to go there. I declined all of my other offers except one. Is any of those who already got an offer thinking about rejecting it? Thank you in advance!

Hi. Is it common to negotiate offers? If yes, how should I go about it? I believe the offer that my top choice school has given me will not be enough to sustain myself. I have an offer which is 7000$ higher than what my top choice program is giving me. Is there any way I can talk to these guys? Any polite way of doing this? I would love to attend the program but I don't think I have the funds to sustain myself.

Hello all! I got an offer from a program I really like and I would like to accept it. However, I'm also on the waitlist of 3 similar-ranked programs that told me they don't know when they'll be releasing their waitlist offers. What would be the best course of action? Even with an offer from any of those 3 other schools I don't know if i would change my mind considering the offer I already have. Should I accept the offer now? Should I let them know about my waitlist status in those other schools? If I do get an offer from the waitlist and decide to go to one of those schools, how should I approach it? Thanks!

I would love to hear some advice from people about how to navigate being on a waitlist, especially for a school you have a strong preference for. Particularly interested in: Should you reach out to the school? How strongly should you communicate your preference? If it's true, is it worth saying something like "If you make me an offer, I will accept it"? What is the ideal time to reach out? March 15th, April 1st, April 14th? Should you talk about other offers you're considering, or wait until they ask? I imagine most schools have their waitlists in some kind of rough order of who they want to make offers to, but they don't communicate that. Just wondering what the best way to handle this situation and maximize chances of getting an offer is, especially that could lead to an offer before the very last minute.

So, I’ve been hearing that some schools may give offers shortly after April 15. The two schools that I am fully admitted to with funding so far have said that they want a decision by April 15 and the offer may not last beyond that. Furthermore, the one I’m learning towards said that they want a form signed that they say is considered “binding”. If I were to accept one of these offer (potentially signing a form) would I have a realistic opportunity to accept a better offer if it come shortly after April 15, or would I have to take a gamble on whether I think I would get in or not? How often do people switch shortly after April 15?

Hi all, I have been asked for a Skype call with a professor from a university where I applied to for an Ag/Applied Econ Ph.D. I have not yet received any offer letter from the program. This email came on February 28, which I think is a little later than when a lot of programs send offer letters. The meeting is NOT with the graduate coordinator but a professor whose research, they thought, I would be interested in. The email also highlights that I can ask any questions about the program. I am confused what this means. Does it mean the program generally does this to all the selected applicants to review if their interests and the research project match with each other? Does it mean the first round of offers were sent to the best candidates with a flexibility to choose any project and advisor they like after the program starts, and other remaining applicants are tried to be matched with other existing projects? Is this practice common? Look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks, Ssh

Please could someone offer some advice about which MSc programs are the best to apply for to increase my chances of getting onto a US PhD course next year. I know that the EME MSc at LSE is the best but I don't have any chance of being admitted to that. I'm looking more realistically at somewhere like Nottingham or Essex, and both of them offer MSc Economics, but also MSc Economics and Econometrics. Am I right in thinking that the MSc Economics and Econometrics would be better for boosting my PhD application chances because of the more quantitative nature of the course?

Hi guys, I'm applying to a several Finance PhD programs this year. Since I think they are quite competitive, I had a verbal agreement with my summer internship company, who allowed me until very early March (01-02 something) to accept/decline my offer. So I wonder if I would know my PhD application result by then so I can safely plan to sign/relinquish the offer? I read around this forum and see that most people get interview in mid-February, so do you guys know how long do I have to wait post interviews to receive the offer ? Thanks in advance.

Dear group members, I am done with my GRE and hence am selling off the remaining few months of my Magoosh and Manhattan mock exam subscription. Let me know if anyone is keen on buying it. I can offer it at a decently discounted price. Also, hit me up if you want me to share my GRE experience. I scored 330/340. Might offer some advice to the aspirants in this group. Regards, Vandan Jain

This is the time of year in which some people have been accepted at a school (or schools!) they're happy with, others are on wait lists, and others are still waiting for more results. (And I guess some people are in all three categories.) Here's a few pieces of advice. If you have an acceptance or a place on wait list that your are sure you are going to turn down, let the school know ASAP. Their feelings won't be hurt. On the contrary, they'll appreciate the information as it may let the school turn to another candidate. And you'll have done a favor for another applicant. (But see 4 below.) If you have multiple offers, don't be in a hurry to be sure which one you're going to turn down. Visit days provide a lot of opportunity to learn about "atmosphere." Also, you may be able to use an offer to bargain for an improvement at school you prefer. You probably won't get very much out of this, but you might get a little something. If you are on a wait list and are still interested, drop an email to that school and let them know. Around April 15 wait lists move very quickly. A school is much more likely to reach out to you if they know you're interested. You can say "Just wanted to let you know I'm still very interested," or "I'd like you to know you're my first choice school." (But you have to tell the truth. People have long memories.) If you have an offer at a reasonably competitive school, let them know that too. Despite this advice about wait lists, if you're on one you should remember that schools almost all "over admit." It's likely that the first few drops at a school won't make the wait list move. For this reason, much of the action is right around April 15. Remember that for American schools April 15 is the deadline to respond. Be sure to accept at your best option by then. What happens if you get a better offer later (which does happen, especially for a couple of days after the 15th)? You can accept the later offer conditional on getting a "release" from the school that you had accepted. These are almost always forthcoming, and with no hard feelings.

Hey guys, I got an offer from UCSD econ. To those who are already at UCSD or know someone there, I was just wondering how is the program overall? Do you like it there, hiw hard is the first year and the qualifying exams, and how is the 2nd year metrics sequence, etc? Any information about the program is much appreciated. Thanks!

Can you post for which schools did you get an admission offer, and which ones are you definitely declining or which one will you probably accept?

Hello Phd peers, I received an offer for a PhD in Fall 2019. I am given a week and a half to reply with my response. T Many of the schools that I applied to have had a deadline of February 1st. That being said they haven't reviewed applications yet. I reached out to them and some replied saying they need another 10-12 days. Is it acceptable to not withdraw from application even after accepting an offer?

Hello, I have just received an invitation for an interview from one of the programs I applied to. Although the email sounded very positive, I don't think that it is an official offer of admission and that I could still be rejected. What I was wondering is that if this is normal because I've never heard of interviews being part of the admissions process for Ph.D in Economics. I am happy that at least I've managed to be selected for the interview process but wondering at the same if some students would have been accepted already without the interview process. It would be of great help if anyone who knows anything about the process could give any insights and advice on preparing for the interview eg. what kind of questions I might get asked. Thank you all.

I’m an undergrad currently recruiting for summer research internships within the Federal Reserve System. My ultimate goal is to work at a Fed full-time for 2-3years before applying to a PhD in economics. I recently verbally accepted an offer (without yet signing a written offer) from a bottom-5 Fed. The next day, I received an offer from a top-5 Fed. I have some questions about this: 1. Could reneging on Fed A lead Fed B to pull their offer? 2. If both Feds pull their offers, does this lock me out of full-time RA hiring next year? 3. I also have an offer from a top-tier economic consulting firm. Is interning there an option even worth considering? In general, what’s the best move here? I don’t want to underplace myself, but I also don’t want to ruin my chances at the Fed full-time. Any insights from current/former Fed RAs/interns on this topic would be much appreciated.

Hi guys. I've got quite a serious problem that I caused myself. I believe that I made a wrong decision when choosing which offer to accept. I feel that I did what other people were advising me to do and that I didn't follow what my heart was signaling. I know it's a very stupid thing to ask about, but do you think it is theoretically possible to change the decision after the April 15th deadline - after I accepted one offer and rejected another, assuming that the other school didn't get any other student off their waitlist (they didn't have one)?

Wanted to hear from veterans as well as 2018 intake folks what the typical post acceptance process is and its timeline. Mainly, after receiving the offer of admission and confirming intent to enroll, by when does rest of the process of receiving detailed offer package with insurance, reporting date etc transpire?

Hi all, I've been accepted at an Econ PhD program and was wondering what the consequences are for withdrawing after accepting the offer after April 15th. I am happy about this school but also have some RA apps pending, and after some soul searching (and tons of advice) I realized I would likely accept any RA offer (with few conditions) over this current school. The problem is that the deadline to commit is fast approaching, and a lot of my RA apps are still under review. If I get an RA gig after committing to this program, would I be able to withdraw, and what are the consequences for doing so? Thanks!

Hi guys. I think I am done with my application. Now I am going to decide an offer from these schools: U of Arizona/U or Rochester/Michigan State/Georgia State. All are IS PhD program. As far as I know the ranking in IS is UA > GSU > MSU > Rochester However, the reputation of the business school would be Rochester > MSU > UA > GSU Plz let me know if you think this is wrong though. I am quite new in IS area so I need someone who knows well in those programs. Any ideas or recommendation for my selection is appreciated.

Hi everyone, I recently accepted an offer, thinking it would be my best one, so that I could start the Visa process ASAP. However, I’ve recently received an offer from another two schools, both with better funding and one with better research alignment. The offer I accepted was online and through the university’s portal, and also via an email confirmation to the recruiting professors (BTW these are all US unis) and for a finance PhD. I have not yet filled out any i20 forms. If I were to decline the accepted offer now, would it look really bad on me? I have heard universities aren’t able to provide further admissions once they’ve made an offer out that’s been accepted (e.g., if there are 4 slots and one person accepts and declines, they may only take 3 students for that year). Is this true, even in the case I rescind my acceptance well before April the 15th (I.e., within the next week or two)?. Would it potentially give me a really bad name in a few academic circles, and ruin any chances of ever working at that university later on? Thanks for your time.

Hello, I was wondering what exactly is the consensus in terms of declining an offer after accepting, if it is still early on in the process? For instance, I accepted an offer last week so that I could promptly begin with the visa process, and 3 days letter received an unexpected interview from a school that I didn't think I had a shot at. The funding in my first offer is also on the lower end compared to this other school. I have heard it's bad to accept and then decline, as that school is no longer able to extend offers furthermore to other students. Is this true? Or is that only if you accept and decline after April the 15th? Whilst I am happy to attend my current school, if given an unrestricted choice, I would 100% go with the other school as it is a better research fit and higher funding. Is there likely to be any lasting consequences? For the first school, I have talked extensively to the faculty, and they have been very warm and welcoming. Would this completely tatter the relationship and give me a bad name in the circle?
-
If a school that you have an offer from, but haven't decided whether to attend or not (I certainly haven't decided against it--in which case I'd decline, but I am still waiting for higher-ranked programs to get back to me) offers to fly you out to meet faculty and visit with students, is there anything wrong with agreeing to visit, as long as you are up front about having not made your mind up, and don't make any promises you can't keep? That is kind of the point right? They are flying you out because they know you're unsure and they want to convince you? I don't want to waste their time or money if I get something better, but on the other hand, this is a program that isn't extremely highly ranked, but has some (on paper) really good research and faculty that I'd like to meet.

Hi Everyone! I heard that Duke Accounting PhD program has made their offers this week. Congratulations to the applicants who have received an offer! So is there any offer holder in the forum? Are you going to accept the offer? I just want to know what the average acceptance rate is. Thank you!
