In 2021, I'm finishing my MRes in some European schools. The thing is that I'm not so sure about doing a Ph.D. now. I want to do more courseworks that prepare me to do research in micro theory. For example, now most of my classes are reading papers. It is nice to have some paper reading sessions to get some ideas about research. However, I think I don't learn much by just skimming through them. (I have to read at least 6 papers per week!!) I'm thinking to do one year more coursework. So, if the school allows me to go directly 2nd year MRes it would be nice. Otherwise, Ph.D. program that allows me to take some classes is also fine. Does anyone know some info about this kind of program in Europe? I am thinking about Toulouse M2 or Bonn…but I'm not sure about the exact situation... Just considering that they might have many people doing applied micro theory... Thank you.

Hello everyone. I faced a dilemma, so I am in need of advice. I am from a Commonwealth country, taking my penultimate semester at BA in Economics. Grades: Micro B+, Macro B-, others A and A+ I am aiming to get admitted to a middle-ranked PhD in Econ in the US. But considering that I don't have such a strong background (just have several "papers" with elementary econometrics on SSRN, one conference paper on machine learning topic and 2 papers which currently are under review, but it will take an eternity for the papers to be published), I've decided to apply for MA/MSc. Hence, I do have two options: 1) MSc in mathematical modeling or MSc in Statistics in developing countries (Russia, Turkey, maybe Eastern Europe) or 2) MA/MSc in Economics or Quantitative Economics or Econometrics in Germany (can't afford other Western Europe countries :)) So, which one is more appropriate for PhD in Econ? In case of 2, Economics or Quantitative Economics? Thanks for reading :)

Hi guys, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to help me with the following question: What are the signs of the research topics that are "dead," i.e., not interested by editors and thus very unlikely to publish papers on? And what are the signs of those topics that are hot and "sexy" for editors? I've heard that, for example, strategic processes are not a topic interested by scholars anymore. Also, various aspects of corporate strategy, like acquisitions, are very well-studied, meaning that it'd be potentially much harder to publish something meaningful on them. How could I know if a certain research topic is interested by editors/scholars in strategy and that there's a gap (and thus opening room for publishing papers)? I'm interested in, or even fascinated by, many topics in the field, like corporate strategy, corporate governance, organizational structure, organizational design, market structure, market entry, competitive dynamics, RBV/KBV/dynamic capabilities, institutional theory, network theory, and so on. But just don't know which ones of these research interests are worth exploring further or are more "worth studying" than the others, i.e., can lead to research papers on good journals. Thx for reading and time!

All, So, I was having preliminary talks with my supervisor prior to joining and she said that they do the "three paper system." Meaning three publishable papers as opposed to a monograph. I'm interested in getting more information on what this entails, opinions, etc. At first glance it seems great because, rather than writing a monograph alongside publishable papers, we get straight to the point. Would just like to know pros/cons/perceptions, etc.

Hello! Would you (particularly those of you who are in adcoms) say that it is inadvisable to delve too much into then ongoing graduate level math papers at the time of application and when writing the statement of purpose to enter an Econ PhD program? I know that math is seen as a good thing generally, but don't know if then ongoing graduate level math papers (in topology) might be viewed as a misappropriation of time? There will be, however, at the time of application two writing samples of completed graduate level economics manuscripts (both relevant to the strengths of the school of interest and its faculty). I just don't know if I should divulge that I'm working on math papers at the time or just not mention it (they'll see "Directed Research" on my transcript). Thank you...

Hi! I am accepted into 3 PhD programs in business and need your advice on which to attend. 1. Lousiana State U ( OB/strategic management, you can choose either of them according to your interest) 2. U of Houston ( you can choose the Micro/Macro OB/strategic management), requirement: independent research project that starts from year 1, preliminary exam in year 1, qualification exam in year 2 3. Oklahoma State U , you are required to finish 1st and 2nd year papers by working with the faculty on their projects. students' responsibility is to write the papers. Concerns: 1. I am not sure if I am able to write the papers, since I don't even know how to do the research without the training. 2. even if you are the co-author, I dont think you would be the 1st author, so it actually doesn't matter a lot? And it doesn't necessarily mean the paper could be published? 3. it might take up too much of your time for study and coursework should be the first priority? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

I am wondering if there are many intersections in research between urban economics and macroeconomics. Can you provide papers/ resources? Thanks!

Longtime reader who has had an interest in getting into academia. Initially wantedto do PhD in Economics/Finance after undergrad but was unable to due toinability to do proof based mathematics and limited math scores on GMAT/GRE. Test Scores: GMAT:710 (91% Total, 42 (96%) Verbal, 46 (60%) Quant, 6 (89%) Analytical Writing, 6(70%) IR GRE:159 (83%) Verbal, 161 (78%) Quant, 3.5 (42%) Analytical Writing Undegrad GPA: LargeState University B.SEconomics 3.76 HonorsProgram and Thesis Fullcalculus sequence and multiple econometrics classes Graduate GPA: PartTime program at Small State University M.SData Science 3.5 Research Experience: 2years as undergrad RA resulting in 3 non-peer reviewed papers (papers went tothink tank organization) Teaching Experience: None Work Experience: 3years in analytics at large bank Concentration Applying to: Management/OrganizationalBehavior Number of programs planned to applyto: 5-10 Dream Schools: Duke,Wisconsin, Texas, Washington, UNC Other Questions: What made you want to pursue a PhD? Long time interestin research but choose not to pursue it after undergrad, something I have beenthinking about while working and pursuing my masters part time. Work experiencehas led to a number of questions about how we work (productivity, distractions, etc.) and why we work (motivation, satisfaction, etc.) which I would like toexplore. Reading papers in organizational behavior has confirmed that these areinteresting areas to me that I would like to explore more. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? Needadvice on how to communicate story. E.g. moving from analytics to psychology. Schoolsthat would be good fits? Any additional specific questions you may have: DoI even send my GRE scores? Isit appropriate to talk about work experiences as inspiration for researchideas? How to talk about my part time masters in data science?
