  2. Greetings! I am planning to apply to PhD programs in Organizational Behavior (Fall 2015). Towards this end, I quit my job (have 12 years of work experience in HR/ Have a Masters in Labor & Human Resources from Ohio State Univ - Graduate GPA - 3.7/ 4.0) and started working as a Research Associate at IIM Bangalore (top management school in India) earlier this year (Apr 2014). Have been using this opportunity to work on case studies (Women Entrepreneurs - both Entrepreneurship & Diversity being my areas of interest) and working on 2 research papers on 1) Application of Behavioral Economics to Organizational Learning, and 2) Organizational Learning in start-ups and the role of Accelerators (Org Learning being another area of interest). Also leveraging this opportunity to attend classes being offered at IIM Bangalore to their PhD students (this has helped me get exposure to various sub-streams of OB - Behavioral Economics/ Psychology/ Sociology, etc and helped me fine tune my research interests further). Classes attended as below: 1) Business Decision Making (Prof an alumni of INSEAD - PhD in Decision Sciences/ I have requested him to write a LOR) 2) Positive Organizational Psychology (Prof an alumni of LBS - PhD OB/ I have requested him to write a LOR) 3) Social Networks Analysis (Prof a Strategy/ Entrepreneurship expert/ He is my current boss/ I have requested him to write a LOR) 4) Research Methods in OB (Prof an alumni of Purdue - Phd in Sociology) 5) DREAM workshop - Research as an Entrepreneurial Venture (Prof an alumni of Carnegie Mellon - Teaches Entrepreneurship at Univ of Virginia Darden and IIM Banglr) I gave the GRE last week. 325 total. Quant (did OK, I guess) - 167 Verbal (was disappointing) - 158 Writing - 5 Planning to re-take the GRE later this month to improve (especially Verbal since I know that I had a "bad day at the office"). Would appreciate if I could get some feedback on the list of Universities I plan to apply to (based on overlap of research interests): - University of North Carolina (Kenan-Flagler) - University of Minnesota - Ivey Business School (Univ of Western Ontario, Canada) - Case Western Reserve - Weatherhead - Cornell/ Carnegie Mellon/ Univ of Michigan - Ann Arbor (all ambitious, I know) - INSEAD, LBS (again ambitious but am banking on 1 LBS & 1 INSEAD alumni writing my LORs - not really sure though if that would be of any help). Of course I hope to do better when I re-take the GRE but assuming (worst case) that I apply using the above GRE score, do the list of Universities look too ambitious? Would appreciate any feedback/ sage advice! Thanks in advance! Warm Regards!
  3. Hi everybody, This is my first post in this forum and I'm totally excited to post here :) I'm a masters student, majoring in Operations Research, with a minor in Statistics. I scored a 740 on my GMAT with 51 in Quants :):) Now, I'm all set to start my application process, hoping to secure an admit in one of the business schools to pursue my PhD in Operations Management. I was hoping some of you might be able to guide me in terms of the school list and maybe even professors are active researchers, at the moment. Here's my list: 1. Wharton (Dream dream) 2. UT Dallas(My fiance is in Dallas; I also heard that UT Dallas is a pretty good school for a PhD in OM) 3. UT Austin 4. Rice 5. Georgia Tech 6. UNC 7. University of Maryland 8. University of Michigan P.S.: Some additional details. I have a GPA of 3.61. And 3 recommendations lined up, one of whom is the PhD coordinator of the business school in my university.
  4. Hi, I always wanted to have a PhD, but now that I have an MBA degree, a good job, and a husband, I feel like I might have missed my chance. Though I love academics and would like to join a B School as a faculty one day. I have the following questions: 1.I understand that I will be around 35 when I finally get the degree. Is it possible to have a baby in the course duration? I am a woman. 2.If the answer to the first question is yes, will I be able to live comfortably with the stipend, as my husband will continue his job back home ( He too is an MBA and has a good job). Thanks
  5. Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some insights into which universities I should be applying to and whether the ones I have picked out are reasonable. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Undergraduate: French Major - Eastern Illinois University GPA: 4.0 Graduate: MBA with Research Option - Eastern Illinois University GPA: 4.0 GMAT: 650 Verbal: 41 Quant: 38 AWA: 5.5 Integrated Reasoning: 7 Research Experience: Graduate Assistant - resulted in 2 publications and four conference papers Research Option MBA - developed, designed, and tested research project SPSS EQS Qualtrics Teaching Experience: Supplemental Instruction and tutoring for undergraduate business statistics courses Research Interests: Organizational behavior at Employee and Manager level - OCB, competition, interpersonal behaviors, culture and identity, coworker relationships, work and family balance Recommendations: MBA Coordinator/mentor on research project (Academic) Professor whom I am a GA for (Academic) Professor who is on my research committee - methods (Academic) Targeted Universities: Purdue University of Nebraska University of Kansas Indiana University Florida State University I am looking for a few other "safety" schools. Any help you can provide would be great!
  6. I had been browsing this forum and PhD admission pages in Bschools for quite some time. This is the first time I am posting though. I would greatly appreciate your input on my profile. My main concern is with deciding "how wide should I apply". Education : Bachelors in Production Engineering - 82 % (2nd rank in the university) - 3rd tier Indian University Masters in Manufacturing - 8.75 / 10 (3rd in the class) - from an IIT (top notch Indian University) Scored above 99.5 percentile (with an All India Rank of 12) at GATE (all India level competitive exam for entry into Indian grad schools in engineering) Research experience : Worked in a respected (American multi national) industrial research outfit for 7 years in the areas of manufacturing process planning & control, new product development, Graph theory and formal methods. 2 Int. Journal Papers; 3 Int. Conf Papers; 2 Patent Filings; 8 Intellectual Prop awards for trade secrets (not filed as patents for business reasons of the company) Recommendations : One from my thesis adviser at IIT. Two from my research lab managers at the industrial research lab - both have PhDs and active researchers, though in Industry. One of them have a PhD from Northwestern in IE/OR, editorial board member for a few manufacturing journals. Test Scores : One big hole - have not given the GRE yet. Scheduled for mid November. Currently testing at the mock test (at the start of the prep) 162 Q and 154 V. But I am confident of getting to at least 165 (790) Q 160 V and 5 A Research interests: I am pretty strong at certain computer science aspects such as algorithms, graph theory and formal methods / modeling. So I would like to pick the operations problems that has a strong comp. sci. overlap / interdisciplinary. And, I really do want to be a professor - to get into academic research had always been my career goal from my masters time. Schools Targeting (or may be dreaming of:) ): HBS, INSEAD, MIT, Stanford, Wharton, London Business School, CMU Tepper, Kellogs Cornell, U Mich Ross and UT Dallas. Another point to note is my age : 31 - pretty bad, I guess ! Now, I would like your candid feedback on : - Do I really stand a chance at these schools? If not , which others should I realistically target? - Is my plan to get two recos from Industrial R&D guys OK? - I understand that the publications count as my research experience. What about the patent filings and IP awards, do they count as well? Thanks
  7. Hello, I am looking for PhD program starting from 2013. I know it is unwise to target only T10 (knowing my GMAT score), so thinking to apply in T40 schools of US (should I widen my selection?) and top/good schools of Canada / Australia (only AACSB). Below is my brief profile Undergrad: Mechanical Engineering major from ok university of India. GPA – 3.52 (converted from rule table). Completed in year 2002. Masters: IE & Management (includes research thesis) – IIT Kanpur India, GPA- 3.4 (converted from rule table). Completed in year 2004. IITs are the best colleges in India, not sure if it is countable for PhD admission even. Certification: APICS CPIM, year 2007 Research publication: 1 paper (based on my master’s thesis) published in International journal of logistics systems and management and the paper was selected for international conference in Uruguay for presentation too. Work experience: 8 years, all post master’s degree, all in India, and in good US companies in business analytics and consulting. I am presently managing a large team. Work experience comprises of all Non Software domain and in manufacturing operations, supply chain management, and core business analytics areas. I have read through challenges faced by experienced folks but I am fine to deal with them. GMAT: 640, V31 Q47, year 2010. Never got chance to reappear due to short of time and energy. TOEFL / IELTS: Not attempted. Demographic: 34 years, Indian male, lives in India. Am I too old to start a PhD? Recommendation Letters – Can get 1 good letter from masters’ Thesis guide (he did PhD from Case Western Research University, US). Rest I can get only professional recos from my present and previous supervisors I worked with. Other professors, who taught me in masters or undergrad, might have forgotten me and may write irrelevant recos. Reason for PhD: Originally I wanted to do research post masters but landed into job and by temperament I am a research oriented person. I want to finally go into academics and feel this is the time for that and a PhD surely will be required. Specific help needed: Which schools to apply to have good chance of scholarship and admit? I am contemplating for PhD in Strategy (leaning more) or OM (worked extensively in this area during job) at present. Any inputs on profile and schools to apply from folks will be highly appreciated. Thanks
