  1. hey guys, firstly thank you so much for taking the time to read my application. I plan to apply for econ phd in fall 2022. im just hoping to get a fair idea of where my profile stands and what unis i can target (north america) for a phd in econ. undergrad: irrelevant degree in English and English literature from a Chinese institution (RUC), gpa: 3.7/4 double major in econmics from another instituion (one of the best) from China (Peking University): gpa: 3.8/4.0 grad: masters in economics in Duke University. Current GPA: 3.957 research experience: I think my research experience is not much. 1) Several not-that-hardcore RA experience in undergraduate. 2) Currently working as RA for a law professor whose research area is corporate finance/law. The connection with him is close. 3) a research paper for (not that good I think) GRE: V:162 Q:170 AW:4.0 LORs: My current RAing professor would write one I think. Another may come from an econ professor who taught me in two classes. Maybe the third would come from my real analysis teacher who is a postdoc now. Courses: Math: Multivariable Calculus (A+); Linear Algebra (A+); Probability and Statistics (A); Intro real analysis (A); ODE&PDE (one course A+); Applied Stochastic Process (planned) Econ: Intermediate Micro(A); Intermediate Macro(A-); Intermediate Econnometrics (A+); Microeconomics-master level (A); Advanced Microeconomic Analysis-master level (A) Econometrics-master level(A); Applied Micro Econometrics-master-level (A-); Other Undergraduate Field Course: Financial Economics (A+); Development Economics (A-); Envrionment Economics (A+); Game Theory(B or B+) and etc. please do let me know where i stand, if i can do anything to improve my profile further and what my target and safety unis can be. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! I am really anxious. :)

  4. Hello everyone, I am looking to find a PhD program in either economics with an education concentration (i.e. similar to an economics of education program) or a labor economics program that have reputed practitioners in either of these respective fields. I am finding that most of the hits I get in my PhD searches in European universities are in either economics or public policy, but I thought it might be more useful to use the hive mind community here for some guidance. In the case that there are a number of programs that fit what I'm looking for, could you kindly rate them by order of contributions to policy-making in their respective (directly or indirectly) followed by academic contributions. Many thanks in advance.
  5. Type of undergrad- BS - MS dual degree in Mathematics from a reputed science institute in India. Master's thesis project done at Computer science dept in India's top most institute. Undergrad GPA- (so far) 9.0 on a 10 point scale. GRE - 169 Q, 156 V, 3 AW Math Courses- [We have A-B-C-D scoring pattern] Calculus - I,II (A); Linear Algebra(A); Probability and Statistics- I (A), II (B); Analysis - 4 courses (B); Group Theory (B); Point Set topology (B); Graph Theory, Algorithms, Mathematical Biology (A); ODE(A), PDE(B) ; Calculus on Manifolds, Differential Geometry (A); Combinatorics (B); Stochastic Processes (A) Economics Courses- None. But I have done a few online courses and took up some related projects M-S Thesis Project- Mainly studying economic models using extensive mathematics including Optimization and Game Theory. Should lead to a publication eventually. LOR - One from my MS guide who is in CS dept, but has done algorithmic game theory previously, One from a prof who has taught 4 courses and guided for a semester project. Third from my statistics Prof, who taught 2 courses and guided for a semester project. Research Experience - Currently doing my MS project which is mostly about forming new theories and computations, which can definitely count as a research experience. Took up one summer project in Game theory. Have worked on 4 semester projects studying Learning theory, complex analysis, Game theory etc. No other formal research experience. Teaching Experience- No formal experience. But confident about teaching maths. Research interests - Development Economics, Microeconomic Theories, Game Theory. I know that I have nothing to show my economics skills, but I have been reading Economics since last three years. I have taken all courses which can help me in doing economics. I have read and studied various parts of Game Theory since last two years. Also, the ongoing project involves a lot of economic understanding and I need to read some research papers for that. I aim to apply to various universities in the US for Econ PhD. I'm confused about my odds at getting into one because of formal training in extensive maths. No one from my institute has studied economics further, except a student who took up MS in Finance at Oxford. Could you please give any inputs as to how I should proceed? Also, I won't be able to apply to more than 13-14 universities, so which universities should I be applying to? Thank you very much in advance.
  6. Hey guys, I'm having a bit of trouble tackling some issues with my future prospects. I don't know if I'm aiming too high, given my profile or if there are some key ingredients that I lack in making a successful application. For starters, here's my profile: 1. Indian student 2. Undergrad: Bachelor's of Commerce in India from one of the Top 5 universities in the country GPA of 3.73 on 4.00. Two semesters of Business Economics (A- in both). A whole bunch of extracurricular activities. Honours in Finance and Investments Ranked among top 10 in my department. 3. Test scores GRE: Q-161, V-163, AWA-4.5 (worried if I have to give this another shot) TOEFL: 113 4. Postgrad: Diploma in Economics from a Top 5 uni in UK. Optional modules on Time Series Econometrics and Monetary Economics Will complete masters year ending 2019. 5. Work Exp: A. Worked with a renowned econ prof from a top-ranked management uni in India as an RA One year long RAship. A couple of credits in working papers. Area of research: fiscal policy and debt management Was a TA for one of the prof's economics courses. B. Worked as an intern at a national business newspaper. Got a couple of news articles written. 6. Research interests: International macro, monetary policy, labour markets, fiscal policy, debt management and taxation 7. Future plan: Unsure of the route. Should it be a couple of years of work followed by PhD or PhD immediately after masters? PhD - No specific preference but Top 5 of UK, Top 20 of USA and Top 5 of Europe. Work - macro policy research institutes and think tanks or RAship 8. LORs From the prof I worked with as an RA. The second one will be from a prof who I studied under, in the UK. I'd really appreciate all the advice and feedback I can get. The reason I'm worried is that I made applications for masters to Top 5 unis in UK and Europe during the year and got just one conditional offer. Thanks in advance for all the help. Much obliged.

Applying to (2018 Winter intake, and preference is in order): LMU Munich, Sciences Po, Toulouse GSE, University of Bonn, Goethe Universitat Frankfurt, University of Cologne, University of Hamburg, University of Vienna, and University of St. Gallen. --- I am applying for a European Msc in Quantitative Economics/Economics with the hopes of training quantitative reasoning and experience diverse perspectives in conducting research prior to applying for a PhD program. I am here to ask for advice or suggestions and input on my profile as I will be applying to masters programs in Europe as a Non-EU applicant. know that I don't have an impressive GPA nor do I have the sit-in math classes in my major to compete with. My econ program isn't too quantitative, and financially, I can't afford to take the math classes necessary to major or minor in math. I also transferred into my university from a community college and time costed me a lot to build an undergraduate record for great recommendation letters or a chance at PhD or masters programs in Economics. Lastly and most importantly, thank you for your time and interest in attending this thread.
  8. Hello. This is my first post. I need a lot of your feedback to make up my mind on something that has been bothering me for the last 20 years... I have BA in Double Major in Applied Math and Econ from UC Berkeley, GPA of 3.76 MS. in Engineering Economic Systems (now Management Science) from Stanford, GPA of 3.82 I could have continued to study for PhD in program after my MS but decided to work due to lack of personal funding and a great job offer from a bank. I've had a successful career in finance up to now as a derivatives trader in top investment banks and in asset management. However, getting a PhD and doing research/teaching was always in the back of my mind as my personal goal and a possible career for the second half of my lifetime. Considering my background, I have a lot of interest in asset pricing and portfolio managment and predictability of markets, and system trading etc... I have struggled whether to apply pretty much every year after working for few years and had some money saved up. However, time just flew by and now I'm already 45. At current age, would there be any interest from top schools to look at me as a legitimate candidate? Certainly, given the opportunity cost, it would not worth it for me unless it is one of the top schools. But if it is one of the top10 schools, I wouldn't mind pursuing the degree. In addition, although schools might not think this way, my placement after the degree is less important to me personally compared to the young PhDs, as long as I can contribute to teaching MBAs or doing research in the field that I'm interested in. I'm pretty confident that if I review the materials that I learned in BA and MS for few months, I would be up to speed in quantitative subjects. Given that it is Nov. already, I would be preparing to take GRE next year and applying next year. Am I dreaming on something that I would waste a lot of my time on or do I have a decent chance? Thank you for any comments...
  9. HI everyone, This is my first time posting here. Kind of nervous about your replies...and not sure if this kind of post should be presented here. If not, please tell me where to post this. I am applying for Econ PhD and currently revising my SOP for the second version. The previous version was reviewed and it turned out that the first paragraph didn't show my strong intention in studying PhD. And after that I have read some examples. However, I don't know how should I revise it. For example, should i started with an impressive story somewhat relevant to my field of interest (i.e. Applied Economics)? Or, should I simply start with my current job as a RA and the projects I am working on with my professors? (I am not enrolled in any grad school now, just graduated from college, but I manage to get in the research center and now prospecting a paper and several other projects regarding to empirical studies.) It is hard to get the first paragraph right. I need some help please! Thank you:)
  10. Hi all, I am now studying statistics in a premier institute of India (indian statistical institute, kolkata). After completion of masters in statistics I am thinking of applying for the edeen program. I don't have much information regarding this program or its future prospectus. This page doctorale EDEEM Erasmus Mundus: EDEEM Erasmus Mundus provides some information but not much, maybe because of very recent introduction of this program. But is there anyone in this forum who can give a better insight of this program? Thanks in advance.
  11. I'm from ECON in Tsinghua University, China, planning to apply for PhD in economics next year. I'm interested in econometrics, mathematical economics, micro and macro theory. I got a GRE of verbal 166+quantitive 169, maths courses: two semesters of advanced calculus, one semester of linear algebra, probability and mathematical statistics, real analysis, statistical inference. Currently exchange in UBC and want to get more advice on how to get LOR. Thank you all so much!
  12. I am an engineering student( finished 4 semesters of Bachelors in Engineering - comp. sci.) from India. Have great grades and have done 3 research internships with some great organisations in my field of bachelors( computer sci.). I have also published 2 papers in image processing. I have had interest in Behavioral economics but don't know what to do. I want to do a direct PhD through GRE. I have had most of the math courses required but not real analysis. I am trying to study some basic economics courses, all self taught. I am not so financially sound so would also be trying hard for some kind of financial assistance. But I cant get very strong LORs. I can although get two from IISC(indian institute of science - premier research institue in india ) grads, one of whom is very famous in machine learning and economic modelling domain and is a res. prof. at Oklahoma uni.. Other is a research professor at IISc. I will be going to write GRE in my 4th year and want some guidance on how to deal with this situation. Is it possible for me to get admission in any of the top 15 places for beh. eco.. if I do some more internships in Economics related fields? My undergrad gpa so far is 3.88/4. Suggestions needed.
  13. Are they essentially the same? I'm interested in health services research, but I am also interested in cost-benefit analysis of public health interventions and public policy. Does it really matter which doctorate I complete? I apologize in advance for my ignorance.
  14. Hey guys, (Note - Already went through the list of schools suggested by posters on this forum, thanks for that guys :-D) I earned my engineering degree in Information Technology after which I am working with a prestigious software firm for the past two years in the banking domain. I would like to pursue my masters/PhD in behavioral economics. 1. Being a graduate in the field of engineering, can I apply for this course straight away without pursuing a masters? (Though most colleges don't stress on this) 2. Can the letters of recommendation be submitted by my employers? 3. Please suggest some good universities based on my profile specified above. And please provide LINKS to the program that you are suggesting. (Link of the college site) Thanks so much in advance. :-D
  15. Hey, can anyone tell me what universities are good for a phd in development economics ?
  16. Such a great Forum I have come across... I am sure I am going to get help from you people I have recently done my MSc in Economics from Quaid i Azam University (QAU) Islamabad. Now Should I continue my Mphil from QAU??? Or If I want to apply abroad what are the basic suggestion for me to do at the first instance????
  17. Hello everyone! I have a small favor to request... I will be applying to graduate econ programs for the fall of 2011. Unfortunately, I by no means have the same sort of extensive background in the subject as many of the other people on here. I touched upon it briefly in college, but economics, behavioral/experimental/computational economics in particular, is something I grew profound interested via a very circuitous route in my years out of school. I'm mostly considering PhD programs, but for the above reason, would certainly consider masters programs if they would boost my chances of getting into a reputable PhD program. If you would be so kind as to evaluate my profile, offer some advice, or give any feedback at all, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Academic Profile Major: Mechanical Engineering School: Purdue University (Ranked #7 for MechE) GPA: 3.1 (I realize this is low, but as the school with the lowest grade inflation, it is still in the top 1/3 of the class) Minors: Electrical Engineering, Philosophy Research: none to speak of Undergrad Math: Through the 300 levels for calculus and algebra, mostly Bs with a few Cs Undergrad Econ: Tested out of Micro I & Macro I, Intermediate Micro (B), Intermediate Macro (A), and a 400 level class in behavioral (A) Grad Math: B+ in Probability Career Profile (Please read! It provides a glimmer of hope! :-) Graduating as a master of nothing, I first took a job teaching in India. Somehow this lead me into IT consulting, where in my spare time I co-authored a book on currency transactions in ORACLE. I then jumped back across the pond as a strategy consultant doing mainly operations research related work for a Big 3 consulting firm. In the past year, I retired those boots and now work professionally as a researcher in a corporate lab working on a class of technologies called support vector machines (related to optimization, artificial intelligence, and text/data mining). I've thus far co-authored one paper, presented a paper at the International Journal Conference on Neural Networks, and am currently working on another paper where I will be the primary author. I also developed the original paper that I co-authored into a fully functional, patent pending piece of software that has been deployed at several Fortune 500 corporations. Given my background, what I am really interested in is the nexus between computer science and economics, and so I've created the following initial list of schools I want to apply to roughly in the order of desirability (and inverse to my chances of getting in ): List of Masters Programs I will be applying to (and PhD if possible) 1) LSE - MPhil in Philosophy and Economics (my one exception to the above statement) 2) Tilburg - Research masters in Economics 3) Cambridge 4) Oxford 5) Duke 6) Indiana University List of PhD Programs I will be applying to 1) Carnegie Mellon - Social & Decision Sciences 2) Berkeley 3) Yale - SOM 4) ETH Zurich 5) CalTech - Social & Decision Sciences 6) Cornell 7) U. Chicago GSB 8) U. Chicago Harris (school of Public Policy) 9) UCSD 10) Purdue I should be able to get two recommendation letters from my alma mater, an additional one from my boss (who used to be on the admissions committee for CMUs Computer Science program). I will also be taking a course in game theory at U Chicago GSB this fall. Hopefully I can get a recommendation from there as well. Given all this...what are your thoughts? Am I aiming too high? Are there other schools I can consider? Is there anything else I can do to shore up my application? Thanks for all your help! :luck2: --Gau
