  1. Hi I’m a dual US citizen currently taking up my 4 year BS Pharmacy program in the Philippines and my end goal is to work in the US with a PharmD degree. They offer a 2 year post-bacalaureate PharmD program here in my country, but I read a post saying that the NABP is very particular about 5 years of CONTINUOUS study. With that being said, would it be better to pursue the PharmD program in the US? Or would it suffice to graduate from the BS Clinical Pharmacy program of 5 years from my country?
  2. Hi! I posted a while back looking for Filipinos currently doing their PhD or applying for one. I got a few private messages and got a few tips and advice. I figured asking for more advice wouldn’t hurt and is worth a try. I would just like to ask what are my chances of getting accepted into a good masters. Eventually, I would like to pursue a PhD (hopefully, in a top ranking school). I have more specific questions below. A number of people might be able to figure out who I am based on this profile. Hi! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Double degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics (from a top private university in the Philippines) Undergrad GPA: 3.62/4.00; cum laude for getting a GPA of at least 3.50 Type of Grad: 1-year Masters in Applied Mathematics (currently taking) Grad GPA: too early to tell, still currently taking GRE: will be taking it in August, hoping for 165Q/155V or better Math Courses (undergrad-level): Calc I-III, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, ODE, Probability, Time Series and Forecasting, Real Analysis, Scientific Computing. Also, seminars in PDE, operations research and financial math. (All A’s and B+’s) Math Courses (grad-level): Advanced Stat Methods, Intro to Options. Both still currently taking. Will be taking more in the coming months Econ Courses (grad-level): None Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intermediate Micro & Macro, Intro to Math Econ, Intro to Econometrics, International Econ, Development Econ, Theory and Practice of Social Development, Econ of Natural Resources. Also, a workshop in urban econ. (All A’s and B+’s) Other Courses: A few finance and accounting classes Letters of Recommendation: Hopefully: (1) thesis adviser who also taught me international eco, (2) macro and social development teacher (with whom I did a big group project under – we worked with a government hospital for this), (3) stat teacher (for time series and forecasting, statistical simulation – part of scientific computing, and currently for advanced statistical methods; we had research projects in those classes). They are not from top European/US universities but they can vouch for my performance in class and research skills. Research Experience: Undergraduate economics thesis (in a group of 3) on econ networks with econometrics (got 3rd place in the department’s best thesis awards). Applied research projects (also done in groups) in math classes (ODE, time series and forecasting, scientific computing), and economics classes (intro to econometrics, development econ, urban econ). Teaching Experience: currently a summer semester lecturer for undergraduate intermediate macro Research Interests: Econometrics and quantitative econ, macro, financial econ SOP: Will expound on some of my class projects. Will also try to tailor my SOP depending on the program and school. Concerns: Degrees from internationally unknown institution. LORs are from people adcoms most likely do not know. Research experience mostly from school work, no RA experience. GPA could be better. Applying to: Mostly masters programs including LSE EME, Duke MSEM, SSE, CEMFI, Bocconi ESS, BGSE. Hoping to pull up my chances for a top PhD program. Do you think that, with my current profile, I could be competitive in applications for top 20 PhD programs? If not, in which bracket are my chances not bad? Should I pursue a masters program to bump up my chances? What are my chances for the masters programs I listed above? Are there other programs you think I should check? Thank you very much for any help you can give!
  3. Hi! I'm a Filipino student hoping to apply for PhD and Masters programs in Economics outside of the Philippines, for entry in 2016. I only know a small number of Filipinos who are pursuing such programs, and most of them are my professors who completed their studies decades ago when the admissions environment were definitely different. Knowing more of them would help me in understanding my chances in these programs. Specific questions I want to know include: (1) what programs Filipinos have been admitted into, (2) what are approximate degree equivalences, (3) what opportunities there are in the Philippines to improve one's profile, etc. Knowing these would help me immensely in tackling applications. I would just like to ask if there are Filipinos on this site who are willing to share their application experience and may be open to questions. Or maybe someone can direct me to an appropriate forum or website where I might find answers. Thank you! :)
  4. Hi, like most of us here, I have big dreams of studying econ phd in the U.S. or in top universities abroad. I would really appreciate your suggestions. Program: BSc in Applied Economics and MSc in Economics (5-year ladderized program) in a top university in the Philippines Cumulative GPA: 3.622/4. Graduate Math+Statistics Courses: Set Theory and Advanced Calculus (4.0/4.0); Linear Algebra and Difference and Diffential Equations (3.5/4.0); Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (2.5/4.0); Matrix Differential Calculus (3.5/4.0); Real Analysis with Economic Applications (4.0/4.0); Static Optimization Theory and Applications (4.0/4.0); Dynamic Optimization: Theory and Applications (4.0/4.0); Econometric Theory (4.0/4.0). Graduate Economics Courses: Advanced Microeconomics 1 (MWG level-4.0/4.0); Advanced Macroeconomics 1 (4.0/4.0); Advanced Microeconomics 2 (Game Theory at Fudenberg level-4.0/4.0); Advanced Macroeconomics 2 (4.0/4.0); Microeconometrics (Cameron+Trivedi/Greenwood level-4.0/4.0); Macroeconometrics (Enders/Diebold level-4.0/4.0); International Finance (4.0/4.0) Undergraduate Economics+Statistics+Econometrics Courses: Mathematical Economics 1-2 (both 4.0/4.0); Economic Statistics (3.5/4/0); Microeconomics 1-2 (both 4.0/4.0); Macroeconomics 1-2 (3.0/4.0; 4.0/4.0); Econometrics 1-2 (2.0/4.0; 3.0/4.0); Economic Development (4.0/4.0); International Economics (3.0/4.0); Project Analysis (3.0/4.0); Special Topics in Economics 1-3 (4.0/4.0; 4.0/4.0; 2.5/4.0); Economics of Industrial Organizations (4.0/4.0); Operations Research (3.5/4.0). Research Experience: been RAing with a UIUC econ phd professor for two years now, research is mostly macroeconomics and time-series (DSGE modeling, global projection models, VARs, etc.); doing an internship with the IMF Resident Representative Office in the Philippines, project mainly involves construction+simulation of DSGE model for the Philippines); MSc thesis on a DSGE model with financial-real linkages; a policy brief published in ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia). Teaching Experience: TAing under the same UIUC prof; applying for other professors too. Research Interests: Macroeconomics, Macroeconometric modeling (DSGE), Time-series analysis and forecasting. LORs: One from the UIUC econ phd alum (not extensively published yet but expert in DSGE modeling), one from Kyoto University econ phd alum (well published and an econometrics expert), both of them I work with under the DSGE team (so I think I have good chances of getting decent LORs from them), and maybe one from my intermediate micro prof alum of econ phd from Alberta University Concerns:Given this profile, what schools should I target? If I am aiming for top 10-20 universities in the U.S., what further steps should I take to improve my profile? Should I get a masters in econ from European universities? Should I take more math courses? Thank you very much, any help would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Hello, my name is William Noble. I have been teaching ESL for a long time. I have posted before under a different name in Test Magic under another account to a different school. I am from New York, New York, but currently live in Manila, Philippines. I moved here to do missions among street children and to marry my filipina wife. By coming here, I have broadened my opinion and experience in English around the world. I first taught at Korean-managed English schools, but then decided to go into online tutoring. I have taught English for over 10 years now, including Business English and TOEFL/IELTS preparation, and I am currently writing my first novel. Thank you.
