  1. Hi all, Does anyone know how good is a RA at IMF for those interested in getting into top PhD programs? (I know that being an RA at a top10 univ is a better option but it's not available for me at this time). I looked for the PhD placement of former IMF RAs but couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance!
  2. Hello all, what is the general perception/impression of the economics department at the University of Georgia? What is it known for? How is their placement compared to other similar departments?
  3. I have been admitted at the following unis: U Illinois UC U Arizona U New Mexico I also have really good chances with Colorado Boulder and Wyoming. I want to go into environmental and development economics. UIUC is definitely the best ranked uni in economics and it has a pretty good placement, while all the others are much more specialized in environmental and development econ, but seem to not fare just as well with placement (except Colorado). I'm thinking probably UIUC would give me the best chance to actually teach at any of those unis after the PhD and that a higher ranked uni is better in general for reputation, but on the other side those other unis do have a strong emphasis on the branches I like the most. Which one should I accept? Thanks to anyone willing to help! :)
  4. I am currently taking the advice from the forum to pursue an Masters in an attempt to have a shot at a better PhD program. The threads have been very useful in gauging the likely PhD placement outcomes of various tiers of universities. However, it got me thinking. What are the factors that distinguish a top tier PhD program from a lower one in terms of placements? I have thought about this a lot and have come up with a small list: 1) PhD training (courses etc.) 2) Incoming student quality and previous training (elite programs on average have better and more prepared students) 3) Network effects (being closer to those at the forefront of research) 4) Time (having 6 years to complete a PhD) Just wanted to know what are the other factors? Assuming a prospective student had the chance to enter the program at Harvard Economics department for example, but instead chose a Top 50 school due to personal reasons, how would this effect their placement outcome?
  5. Hi All, I've been considering pursuing a masters in economics for some time now, and have identified CEMFI as a solid program. I'm very interested in pursuing a degree in Spain, due to the lowers costs, as well as the opportunity to live in Spain for 2 years. I'm curious to get the group's opinion regarding the competitiveness of my application. My undergraduate degree is certainly relevant, but I am a bit concerned about the less than stelar GPA. My work experience is also relevant, but I'm not so sure that european grad programs place much weight on job experience. My background: 1) 3.4/4 GPA from Texas Tech University - Bachelors degree in Finance 2) 2 Years working for Goldman's fixed income asset management business, as a product management analyst 3) Have not taken the GRE yet, but with 4-5 months of study, can expect to have a competitive score Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks, Sean
  6. Hi everyone, I have recently got three offers from the above universities, all with full funding. Do you have any suggestions on what offer should I choose? My research interest mainly lies in political economy, development, environmental economics and economic growth. Chicago. pros: I was a graduate student at Harris, and can waive the first year courses and passed their q, therefore I could save one year time. Faculty matches my research interests and are first-tier scholars. cons: less rigorous training in economics, not strong placement records in economics (may probably better in the future, since they have many great hiring.) Cornell. Pros: take most of the courses with their econ students, good training. Tight relationship between faculties and graduate students (they coauthor frequently). good placement records, may be even better than their econ department. cons: Faculty members are not that good compared with Chicago Harris (less top 5 publications). None of them do political economy. Madison. Pros: High ranked program, first-tier professors, rigorous training. Cons: areas may not be perfectly matched. Only want to work with 2 professors. High attrition rate in q exam (rumor?) And not strong placement records. I am quite appreciate for your suggestions and comments.
  7. Hi all. :encouragement: Summarizing information on various forums and programme websites, I have basically narrowed down my targets to these 3 programmes. LSE EME and Oxford MPhil have long been regarded as having the best placement record to PhD programmes, but as I observe MAPSS's placement is also excellent. So I would like to ask for some more opinions: if I wish to enter top 10 programmes in Econ/Finance, which programme would be the best for me? My research interest is in Macro/Finance. I know they are all good in their placements. But if I only aim for top programmes, how top (in terms of ranking) in my cohort in each master's do I have to be in order to enter top 10 PhD? This piece of information is essential but unfortunately not easily gathered. For your reference, this is the placement information: MAPSS: PhD Placement | MAPSS | The University of Chicago Oxford: Limited information can be found on MPhil in Economics | University of Oxford LSE EME: Overall placement of LSE EME+Econ can found on Career and PhD destinations Of course, any input about the 3 programmes is also welcomed!!! Thanks for your help.
  8. Hi, I'm interested in development and applied micro economics, and need to choose between these two options. Historically, Michigan has had much better placement. But, they lack of senior faculty in development in particular now. They do have a lot of interesting APs joining this fall though. Brown has incredible senior faculty - some of whom have joined in the past few years, but I don't think that their placements have quite caught up yet. Brown is a riskier option (don't know if the placements will catch up) - so not sure whether I should go for the place with more interesting senior people or the program that has a higher median placement.
  9. Got an offer from Baruch. The marketing department at Baruch is very supportive, and they got some very nice faculty members. But I'm a little bit worried about Baruch's placement. They do get some decent placement to Oxford and Penn state, but I can't sure whether they are outliers or not. I know the location is very good, but will the location actually has some impact on your placement and research? I really need some advice about this one. Thanks a lot!
  10. Asking because I'm currently contemplating a Yale offer, and people (IRL profs as well as anonymous posters on forums) say that their PhD program places better than the department's rank and has high value added. I'm wondering what's special about Yale that allows it to outplace higher ranked schools. To be clear, I would be very happy going to Yale, and I don't mean to belittle it at all, I'm just interested in knowing how they manage to punch above their weight, so to speak. It seems obvious that the quality of students coming in and the department's overall reputation would play a big role in placement. Given that Yale's faculty doesn't have quite the reputation in economics as the rest of the top 7, and that prospective students presumably value the faculty a lot when choosing where to do their PhD, how do they consistently place so well? What are the ingredients of their "value added"?
  11. Hi! I have a question about placement. What would be a good placement? I know this is pretty subtle sometimes, and I would love to put my question in another way: Should I refer to publication ranking or the general USNEWS ranking when weighing placement? For example, if a low BYU ranking accounting program places one student to a 120ish USNEWS ranking school with a rather high BYU ranking accounting program, would this be considered as a good placement? On the contrary, if a program gets to place its students to big names with relatively low BYU ranking, would this be considered even better or worse than the previous one? Thanks :)
  12. I've finished the first term in my program. I worked hard and made the grades that I aimed for in my courses and started what I think are some interesting research projects. My whole academic life I have lived by this mantra: get good grades because you never know when your GPA will help open a door for you. This is the way that my mind is wired. However, now that I am in a terminal degree program, I'm told by many that grades do not matter. That is, when new PhDs hit the job market, no senior faculty will observe your GPA as an indicator of your potential as a new junior faculty member; they may not even view your GPA. Even though this new philosophy is antithetical to what I've told myself my whole life, I'm tempted to let my coursework slack in order to push harder on research. Before I make that decision to let up in class, I'm interested to hear some opinions from the Urchins. What do you think, is a B as good as an A in a PhD program? Or less specifically, do grades matter when seeking a junior faculty position?
  13. Wharton's one of the top business schools, including in the field of marketing. How come it doesn't have stellar placements? I noticed that Stanford and UChicago have much better placements, but Wharton is ranked better than UChicago. What do you think could be the reason for Wharton's not-so-amazing placements?
  14. Hi guys, I have been accepted into Queen's MA and Toronto's regular stream MA (waitlisted for the DS) with similar funding options because a lot of it comes from an outside source. I was wondering if any of you knew which school I should attend knowing that my main criteria is placement for Ph.D. I know that Toronto generally seems to be considered a better ranked department at least for Ph.D studies but I don't really care about what department produces the most research, just the one that is a better stepping stone for top Ph.D programs. On that front, Queen's seems to have done better in the past few years from what I have read. Can anyone help me with this? Has Toronto placed regular stream students in good Ph.D programs in the past years? Also, I am waiting on UBC's decision. If I was to be accepted, would you recommend going there over the other 2, again based on placement? Thanks.
  15. Can anyone on this forum share information about the PhD Operations Management program at Olin Business School ?I tried to look up their website but it doesn't have a lot of information on its competitiveness in placement and the recent placements don't look very impressive either. If anyone who is attending Olin or knows more about it can enlighten us, that would be great!
  16. Hey guys! I've got a quick question - Is there any example of decent researcher coming from low-ranking PhD program? I've receive a funded offer from low-ranking econ PhD program(SUNY-Albany). My main interest is in public choice, political economy, and economic history. My short term goal is to have my first job in academia, and ultimate(?) goal is to do decent researches and contribute to economics and, hopefully, to the society with my ideas. I'm happy that I have one funded offer but a bit worried about the placement record of the program.(Recent Ph.D. Placements - Department of Economics) I've got to decide before the 15th. Any advice?
  17. I'm planning to apply to PhD programs next year, and was considering some schools in the UK (Warwick, LSE, Oxford, Cambridge) along with some of the top 10 or 20 in the US. Does anyone know if there's an advantage to obtaining a PhD from the UK over the US or vice versa? I'm interested in IO and trade, and want to go into academia after I finish. Thanks for the help everyone!
