  1. Hey guys: What are my possibilities to get into PhD in economics in Europe? Like Zurich, Bocconi, SSE or EUI? I am not considering US My grades are pretty low: Masters in economics (8.2/10) at Carlos III Bachelor in economics (7.3/10) at Carlos III But I have a lot of research experience: Research intern at Bank of Italy Research assistant at UPF (Pompeu Fabra) Research intern at a famous German institute Research Fellow at Barcelona school of economics Soon I will join DG Research at ECB Really good recommendation letters Do I have any chance? I did not take GRE yet.
  2. Masters/ PhD Application (Planning to apply Fall 2021) Background: I was originally a double major in business and biology with the intention to go to med school, and I was not overly motivated my first two years. I got quite a few B's and one C, and this is the main reason my GPA is not where it should be. The courses listed below were mainly taken over my last two years, where my GPA averaged > 3.9. GRE: Yet to Take (Averaging 170 on Quant section) Undergrad: University of Michigan '21, BA Economics with Highest Honors - 3.6/4 Courses & Grades: Econ: Intro Micro (A-), Intro Macro (A+), Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A+), International Economics (A+), International Finance I (A), International Finance II (A-), Labor Econ Survey Course (P for pass), Intermediate Econometrics I (B+), Intermediate Econometrics II (A+), International Trade Theory (A), Experimental Econ (A), Game Theory Seminar (A) Math: Calculus 2 (A-), Calculus 3 (A), Linear Algebra (B+), Probability Theory (A), Differential Equations (A) Research Experience: RA'd for Michigan professor, expecting strong LOR from him. Wrote a research paper on the East Asis Crisis which was published in the Michigan Undergraduate Research Journal Wrote a senior thesis on theoretical micro theory/game theory under a prominent game theorist at Michigan. LOR's: Thesis advisor, a prominent game theorist at Michigan. Expecting a really strong letter (he said my thesis is among the best pieces of undergraduate research he has ever seen in his career). He also mentioned he would absolutely recommend me to the top economics PhD programs. Professor that I RA'd for - also expecting strong letter, however we do not have as much of a relationship as I do with my thesis advisor Work Experience: I will be spending one year working as an equity analyst at JP Morgan starting July. Planning on going to graduate school after one year. Concerns: Not enough math classes (the B+ in linear algebra was a fluke - I packed calc 3 and linear algebra into a spring term, which is twice as fast). Also, I have not taken Real Analysis. However, my thesis is quite mathematical so I hope this signals some mathematic competence. Awards: Received award for best undergraduate Economics paper at Michigan in fall '20. Also expecting a prestigious award for my honors thesis. Plans: I want to apply this fall for a graduate program, and preferably I would go straight to a good PhD program. However, my thesis advisor also suggested doing a masters abroad (Bocconi, LSE, some Israeli universities like TAU or Hebrew University which have strong programs) to make up for my deficiencies. He has connections to the top Israeli programs and said he would love to recommend me to their programs. How would my profile fare in PhD applications, and how would it fare in Master's program applications (specifically abroad)?
  3. I would deeply appreciate any advice on how a person with my profile could become a competitive PhD applicant in the OB/ Decision Sciences field? I intend to apply for September 2022. Profile: Test Scores: GMAT: 730, GRE: Q165, V161, AWA:4.0 Undegrad GPA: 9.75/10, Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering, unknown European Uni Graduate GPA: Accepted for September 2020 in some of the best MSc in Business Analytics programmes in Europe and in some good Master's in Management, still deciding which to attend Research Experience: Only my thesis in the undergrad, research on structural analysis project, peer reviewed conference Teaching Experience: None Work Experience: 3 years, 2 as a junior engineer in an international software engineering company, the role included research in a math/engineering field and programming. Programming skills: Python, C++ Schools: Not sure yet; I am interested in research that is conducted by faculty members in dream US schools but also in some schools within the top 20-40. Moreover I am considering LBS, INSEAD, Cambridge Judge and RSM in Europe. Not in all schools the department is characterized as OB but my research interest remains the same Research interests: - unconscious bias and discrimination in decision making, especially gender related - helping people making better decisions in their everyday life or in a business environment Usually these research interests fit with the OB department and require a psychology background. I try to figure out what would be the best way for me to improve my chances as a PhD applicant for these research fields since I have no social sciences related knowledge. I am open to all kind of suggestions e.g. pursuing a 2nd MSc after Business Analytics. Moreover, if you believe that my chances would be really slim and it would be better for me to find another field for research feel free to share these thoughts too. I would be excited to read your responses and thank you for the time you have dedicated to reading my post.
  4. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA in Economics, Top 7 universities in South Korea Undergrad GPA: 3.9/4.5 (for home university), 3.92/4.0 (for one year study abroad in UT Austin) Type of Grad: None Grad GPA: None GRE: 157V/170Q/4.0AW Math Courses: Calculus I,II (A took in UT), Linear Algebra (A- took in UT), Economic Stat(B+ took in home uni), many Econometrics related classes (A/A+ took in home uni), Econ Stat, Math Econ, Computational Economics(deals with Diff Eq) Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level):Micro Econ I&II, Macro Econ I&II, Financial Econ I&II, Development Econ, Urban Econ, Management Econ, International Finance, Law and Econ, Crime and Econ, Empirical Macro, Empirical Micro, Time Series Analysis with Big Data, Quantitative Econ, Computational Econ, Big Data Analysis (Upper division classes mostly A+/A, Final Year GPA 4.3/4.5) Letters of Recommendation: One from Home University professor who knows me very well(Chicago PhD and Active professor), One Tenured professor from UT Austin(Berkeley PhD and very active), One lecturer from UT Austin whom I worked as RA for a semester(UT PhD), One professor from Bio-lab whom I worked as RA for 4 years Research Experience: RA in Bio-lab(which is quite unrelated to Economics, but worked for 4 years doing various stuff), RA in UT Austin for one semester Teaching Experience: Teaching Math, English, Economics in Korea(5 years of experience, but not college level) Research Interests: Development Economics, Econometrics, Applied Econ SOP: Specific motivation and contents but not very strong i guess Concerns: As an international student, not having MA and applying directly to Econ PhD abroad is quite unfamiliar route in my home country. I have taken many major courses, but I think my math courses are not enough(I didn't took real analysis). Plus, my last 40 credits economics grades are all A,A+ except just for one, but I don't have really good grades during my sophomore year. Especially for Micro. Also, I worked as RA in Bio-lab, which is not much related to Economics. Do you think it will negatively influence my admission results? Other: I have applied to MAs for Urban Planning for specifications in 'economic development' Applying to: Economics PhD - Boston University, UT Austin, Michigan State University, University of Virginia, Rice University Economics MA - University of Toronto Urban Planning MA - UIUC, UC Berkeley, University of Toronto, Rutgers, Cornell Can anyone leave me any comment please? Would there be any chances for me to get admitted?
  5. Hi guys! Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate any advice I could get :) PROFILE Type of Undergrad: Econ & Math, Top 30 public school GPA: 3.95/4.0 GRE: going to take soon. Math Courses: Calculus1-3 (AAA) Discrete (A) Intro to differential (A), Linear Algebra (A), Probability (A), Real Analysis (A), Number Theory (A), Complex (A). Plan to take numerical analysis, differential, and a grad level real analysis next semester, don't know if courses in next semester are gonna help?? Econ Courses (undergrad): up to advanced micro and macro, money and banking, labor economics, advanced international economics, game theory, econometrics, labor economics (All A except labor got A-) Research experience: Honor thesis (already finished), and a summer research fellowship this semester. My advisor (coauthor) feel like the paper has a good chance to get published on a decent journal, but I'm not sure if we could get it published before Dec. I wonder if the committee would take time to read my paper. Teaching experience: None I specifically have 2 concerns. First, I'm a transfer student from an HK university, where I used to learn finance. Because I spent a lot of time on extra curriculum activities, I got a B and B+ on math courses in sophomore year. I retook them in my current school, but I don't know if that's gonna hurt my chance of getting into top schools. Second, My GPA in HK was 3.75. I was actually rank 1 in the entire finance department (a professor checked for me), but my school does not provide such kind of official rank on the transcript. I'm worried that 3.75 does not really look good enough. I have one more question about recommendation letter. Do you think I should get a letter from a professor in math department? Even if I only took his class and got good grades? I did pretty well on real analysis class. Usually, the average was like 50/100 (questions were hard), and I got 98-100 on tests. I don't know if he remembers me since I was very quite. I feel like I got a shot for top 10 schools, but still very unsure. I guess my application looks strong but not like the strongest. Thanks so much in advance :)
  6. Hi, I'm going to apply for Phd in supply chain management(fall 2018). Even though I'm still reading papers, I'm pretty sure my research area will be in the domain of supply chain analytics. My profile is given below. GRE- 322-159V (83 percentile), 163Q(84 percentile), 3.5 AWA TOEFL-yet to appear(previous score expired) Graduation- Bachelors of Engineering(chemical engineering)- Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University(2010-2014) Graduation GPA- 8/10(13th in chemical engineering department) Post Graduation- PGDIM- NITIE(2016-2018) Post Graduation GPA- 8.2/10(1st year) work experience- 2 yr in energy management department in a steel plant(JSW Steel) I also have an option of working with a prof. on a research paper, but i haven't started yet. I wanted to know the colleges where i have a shot. I don't expect people to give names(but I'll be thankful if they do). The approx. rank of college on UTD ranking(with supply chain journal filters) would do. The problem I'm facing is that I don't know how my profile is on a relative scale. Also is there time to work on research papers?
  7. Dear All, I am seeking your advice on my profile and I would really appreciate any type of help you may lend. My Background: Research Interest -Quant Marketing: digital marketing, corporate decision making with data, word of mouth and social media Undergrad - B.B.A Accounting- Top 5% school in my country GPA - validated 3.7 however I only achieved a "pass" my undergrad dissertation Postgrad - Master of marketing analytics from New York University ( still in my last semester) GPA - 3.8 and I did really well on classes for statistics, database marketing and I hold certificate in R and Google Analytics Research Experience - I did a lot of research and analysis with my work on daily basis but most for company and organization I work with. I have 1 conference presentation at NYU without paper/publication. I do share my reports or interesting research on a personal analytics blog. Work Experience - Currently working in web analyst position for higher education, daily work include data collection, marketing experiments, user testing ( I help to conduct focus group surveys and analyze customer attitude) and I work with marketing data analysis such as regression, clustering and correlation on daily basis. Before that I previously worked in similar function for Ogilvy and some press companies. Other Experiences - Previously worked as Teaching assistant in undergrad. Have few research proposals related to my research interests. GMAT: 730( 99% for math) TOEFL - 112 LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION - Can get recommendation letters from professors from NYU but they are not academically active. They are more like successful professionals in marketing. My current employer also promise recommendation letters that will validate how I work with marketing data and how I always dig into data for facts. Some schools that I am currently checking( I want to possibly stay in NYC area) : New York University, University of Rochester, MIT, Wharton ( i know this is a little bit off), MSU, Boston U Some questions I also have: I do realize that the lack of research experience may be a weakness to me but however, I do consider the data analysis work I do for organizations and companies really changed how they function and that is also my passion for further research in marketing. I have a trackable documentation of the type of analytics work/tool that I work with so can I rationalize this as a strength for me as having a solid quantitative analysis methods background and use my user survey experience to demonstrate how familiar I am with experimental methods? Again, thanks everyone for reading this far and I would appreciate any suggestions or advices you may have !!
