I will be graduating in a few weeks from a top LAC (Williams,Amherst, Swarthmore, Bowdoin) with a degree in math and a concentration in statistics. My goal is to pursue an Economics Ph.D in the future. Although I studied math, there are a few holes in my math education as a result of taking time to pursue interests in the humanities. Specifically, - My linear algebra and diff eqs are both weak. I received As in both these courses, but I don't think I fully internalized the material. Rather, I am good at taking tests and was able to get through by memorizing equations, etc. I would like to retake these courses and understand material at a deeper level - I've never studied modern algebra - Received a B in real analysis. Before applying for a Ph.D program I would therefore like to improve my math skills. I will be working in consulting following graduation so it is unlikely that I can take classes in my spare time. So I am wondering if there are any masters programs that would help me fill in these holes while preparing me for a top Ph.D program. Open to math, stats, or econ masters, but I've heard that math masters are better prep.Which programs specifically should I look into? I would also like to have more time to study for Math GRE. If it helps, my GPA is approximately a 3.8 and I have some limited research experience. Alternatively, should I apply straight for Ph.D programs? More about my profile: Econ courses: intro, micro, macro, accounting, metrics, some electives. All As. Math courses: Calculus sequence, Linear Algebra, Diff eqs, Operations research, Analysis, Probability, Math stats I-II. All As execept analysis and probability (B in analysis, B+ in probability) CS: Intro to OOP, Data Structures. All As. Research experience: 1 semester with the stats department. Rec letters: 2 maths and one Econ professor. They know me better than average but not as close as I'd like. Thanks!

PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA in Economics, Top 7 universities in South Korea Undergrad GPA: 3.9/4.5 (for home university), 3.92/4.0 (for one year study abroad in UT Austin) Type of Grad: None Grad GPA: None GRE: 157V/170Q/4.0AW Math Courses: Calculus I,II (A took in UT), Linear Algebra (A- took in UT), Economic Stat(B+ took in home uni), many Econometrics related classes (A/A+ took in home uni), Econ Stat, Math Econ, Computational Economics(deals with Diff Eq) Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level):Micro Econ I&II, Macro Econ I&II, Financial Econ I&II, Development Econ, Urban Econ, Management Econ, International Finance, Law and Econ, Crime and Econ, Empirical Macro, Empirical Micro, Time Series Analysis with Big Data, Quantitative Econ, Computational Econ, Big Data Analysis (Upper division classes mostly A+/A, Final Year GPA 4.3/4.5) Letters of Recommendation: One from Home University professor who knows me very well(Chicago PhD and Active professor), One Tenured professor from UT Austin(Berkeley PhD and very active), One lecturer from UT Austin whom I worked as RA for a semester(UT PhD), One professor from Bio-lab whom I worked as RA for 4 years Research Experience: RA in Bio-lab(which is quite unrelated to Economics, but worked for 4 years doing various stuff), RA in UT Austin for one semester Teaching Experience: Teaching Math, English, Economics in Korea(5 years of experience, but not college level) Research Interests: Development Economics, Econometrics, Applied Econ SOP: Specific motivation and contents but not very strong i guess Concerns: As an international student, not having MA and applying directly to Econ PhD abroad is quite unfamiliar route in my home country. I have taken many major courses, but I think my math courses are not enough(I didn't took real analysis). Plus, my last 40 credits economics grades are all A,A+ except just for one, but I don't have really good grades during my sophomore year. Especially for Micro. Also, I worked as RA in Bio-lab, which is not much related to Economics. Do you think it will negatively influence my admission results? Other: I have applied to MAs for Urban Planning for specifications in 'economic development' Applying to: Economics PhD - Boston University, UT Austin, Michigan State University, University of Virginia, Rice University Economics MA - University of Toronto Urban Planning MA - UIUC, UC Berkeley, University of Toronto, Rutgers, Cornell Can anyone leave me any comment please? Would there be any chances for me to get admitted?

Hello, I appreciate any feedback from anyone who has thoughts on my profile. I am having a hard time gauging what range of schools I am competitive at. PROFILE Type of Undergrad: Top 30 US News in Econ Undergrad GPA: 3.85 Econ / 3.66 Math / 3.53 overall GRE: 163(Q), 161(W), AWA(4) Retaking for a hopefully higher Quant score Math Courses: Calc 1(A), Calc 2(A), Calc 3(B), Intro to Proof ©, Differential Equations(A), Linear Algebra(B+), Intro Stats (A), Advanced Calculus (A-), Topology (A), Probability (A-), Real Analysis (Fall), Stochastic Processes (Fall) Econ Courses: Principles Micro(A+)/Macro(A+), Intermediate Micro(A)/Macro(A+), Advanced Micro(A-)/Macro(A), Mathematical Economics (A), Econometrics (A), Industrial Organization (A-), International Economics (B+). Research Experience: Undergrad Research fellow for my final year. Working with harvard grad prof. Got good results, has been very successful project so far. Use Python, R, Stata.. LOR: One from prof I do research with, harvard grad, prof at my uni and researcher at uc berkley (strong). One from math econ prof, did well, he taught a difficult course, he claims grad level (should be strong). One from econometrics prof, did well, fairly difficult course, tutor for his class (should be good). SOP: I think I've written a pretty good one, still touching it up. I don't address my overall lower GPA, don't know if I should. Lower grades in my first 2 years of uni. Seems pointless to address a C in sociology when word count is valuable. Concerns: Low GRE scores. I am retaking and hoping for at least 165+ Q. Spotty math grades. Overall low GPA. Applying to: I am applying to a lot of schools (20). Yale, Columbia, NYU, UCSD, UCLA, UT Austin, Brown, John Hopkins, Duke, Boston Col, Maryland, UCDavis, UNC Chapel Hill, UC Irvine, UCSB, Vanderbilt, Carnige Mellon, UCol Boulder, U Washington. Should I be looking to maybe shift down the range of schools I am applying to? I am hoping to be competitive in the ~ 15-30 range. Will also be applying to Fed RA programs. Thank you for the opinions.

Hi, I am 2011 undergrad passout in computer science a reputed college in Bangalore. I have my GRE scheduled in mid-october. But I am not confident enough to get good scores in verbal section of the test, in turn would get a low total score. My incomplete profile:- - GRE: [yet to take] - Toefl: 102 - Computer Science graduate (8.2/10) - 2 years of work experience in a startup building Recommendation Systems(data mining/ML). - contributed to the company IP(got filed in US). - No publications/journals. - Interests: Data Mining, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning. I want to get admission in top universities and eyeing for these:- - USC - UCLA - UCSD - Georgia Tech - What GRE score would be preferable for admission for these universities? - As my test is in october, If I score low, taking retest wont help me as I would miss deadlines for these universities. What if I apply for universities for Spring/Fall 2015 next year ? My concern is I would have 3+ years of work experience while applying. Would this work experience(+3) affect my getting into good universities? - Can you please suggest me what to do. If I score low, should I wait one more year or go on with low ranked universities like SUNY(Buffalo). Thanking You Sravan

I am planning to apply for a PhD in Management with a specialization in Org. Behavior / M&O. (2013 fall) My interest areas are team conflict & inter-cultural topics. My profile is as follows: Nativity: Indian Education: B.E (NUS, Singapore), MSc (NUS, Singapore) both in Electrical Engineering with CAP of 3.9 / 5.0; MBA (Indian School of Business - AACSB acredited) with GPA of 3.3 / 4.0 Research Experience & Publications: Currently working as a research associate - last 4 months: 3 conference publications (2 local and 1 international), 1 book chapter (Sage) published, 1 working paper Professional Experience: 4 years in Manufacturing, a few months in consulting and 2 years in Fin services (in Singapore, Austria & India respectively) GMAT: 760, 99th percentile TOEFL: yet to take I will be applying for Kellogg & Harvard, because they are my dream schools. 3 questions for the remaining schools I wish to apply to: 1. Top schools: I was wondering about my chances in schools such as Michigan (Ross), UC Berkeley, UT Austin, NYU Stern, INSEAD, Maryland & London How does one view my chances at these schools? 2. I was thinking about an ideal mix of schools (2 dream, 6 top and 2 avge (Olin/Marshall)) - Any views on which ratio would work better? 2:6:2 or 2:5:3 or even 2:4:4? 3. The main aspect I am apprehensive about is my GPA. Should I be? Thank you in advance for your opinions. :)
