My Target Scores

  1. Hi everyone, I'm an Indian woman aiming for PhDs in Public/Social Policy or International Development. I'm unsure of where to start looking for universities in USA or UK because I cannot figure out where I'd be a strong candidate. Profile as below: Undergrad in economics, 1st rank from a top Indian university Masters in development studies from a top UK university but an overall Merit (about 60-65%), not the highest grade. Working for 2 years now as an RA with young profs/economists from the USA. Have also held internships with large non profits and government in India. GRE 165 quant, 160 verbal. Also completed some additional math coursework in linear algebra, vector calculus and real analysis from Harvard Extension. Have a co-authored publication in a local journal on labour / gender. My dream programs would be Stanford's Economics of Education or MIT Urban Planning PhD's International Development focus (my research is education and labour in cities). But wondering if I'd be a a more realistic strong candidate at NYU Wagner or Duke Sanford? Could anyone help with what universities I should be looking at? Thank you

  4. Hi, I got GRE 315 (V-153, Q-162) GPA-3.68 Work ex-2+ years in same domain One international conference paper. Is it good enough for a PhD at UT Austin, Texas A&M or Colorado school of mines. TIA.
  5. Area of Interest MS in Computer Science | Fall 2021 Bachelor of Engineering Major: Computer Science Score: 8.84 (Out of 10) University: SRM University,India Completion Year: 2018 Scores GRE: 312 | Q: 161 | V: 151 | AWA: - (Just gave my exam a week ago) TOEFL: 101 Work Experience 2 Years Experience in Infosys (recently promoted), working in project using python framework.
  7. Like the title says, I decided a bit late to try to pursue an Econ PhD--it's been a major of mine for a while, and I've been taking some math courses, but I do graduate in a year, so there's not just a whole lot of adapting I can do at this point. I understand the programs are competitive, and if I can't get in to anything, that's fine. I'd just like some thoughts on what I can do with what little wiggle room I've got. I'll work on my applications plenty, but that's easier to change. Graduating: May 2021 Type of Undergrad: Unranked U.S. University. BS in Econ, BA in Political Science & Spanish, Data Science minor Undergrad GPA: 3.9+, should remain above or maybe dip into high 3.8s Undergrad Econ Courses: AP Macro, Intro Micro, Intermediate Macro/Micro, Applied Econometrics, Theories of Economic Growth, Labor (As). Game Theory and History of Econ (the latter required) planned. Math Courses: Linear Algebra (A). Calc III, Discrete Math, ODE planned. LORs: Professor I had for Intro Micro and will have for Game Theory, other I had for three courses and will assist with (informal) research over the summer. Maybe an old CS professor who I will have for Discrete--not sure. Programming: R, limited Python Research Experience: None in Econ at the moment, will have limited experience after summer. Was chosen for a Canadian Fulbright for the summer, but, y'know, pandemic. Work experience: Nothing relevant to Econ. GRE (estimate) I haven't taken the real test yet, but from the practice tests, it seems like about 165Q/163V/4. Will study over the summer, obviously. This post was for peace of mind, even though that's probably not what will come out of it. I don't have a great math background, or good research experience. I'll be doing a senior project during the spring semester, since that's how my university does things. Main questions: -What PhD rank, if any, should I be aiming at? -If looking at Master's programs, should I focus on math, or econ? -Past what rank should I write off PhD programs? Coming from an unranked UG, I'd like something with a positive reputation for graduate school. Just not sure right now if that's possible.
  8. Hey guys, I am currently considering whether I should apply for the following master programs (Mphil Economics Oxford, Mphil Economics Cambridge, LSE EME/Economics) next fall. To my profile: I am currently studying Industrial Engineering and Management at a European university (highly ranked in my home country, but internationally probably rather unknown). GRE: not taken yet GPA: 3.8/4 Courses in Economics: Microeconomics (A-), Macroeconomics (A), Game Theory (A), Econometrics (A+), Advanced Microeconomics (advanced masters course that I took in addition, B+), Mechanism Design (soon), Financial Econometrics (soon). In addition, I have many courses in math, operational research and statistics with very good grades, so the quantitative area should not be a problem. I spent one semester abroad (university internationally unknown) and did an internship in the production of a large technology related company. During my studies I worked as a tutor for two semesters but not in economics (computer science stuff). I have been working as a research assistant for 1.5 years (unfortunately not in economics), where I am currently working on a publication. I will be listed as co-author (although im not sure if the paper will be peer reviewed at the time of application). I see the biggest problems in my lack of research and teaching experience in economics and the B+ in Advanced Microeconomics. Do you think my research experience, although it is not in economics, will be taken into account? What do you think my chances are? Thanks in advance!
  9. Hey, Does anyone know what sort of questions they ask for the Masters in Applied Economics interview? Im pretty nervous and was just wondering if any one had any advice. Was wondering more specifically on technical questions.
  10. Hi everyone. I"m 33 and I got a Msc in math 6 years ago. Grades were not stellar but ok. GRE quite good. I decided I want to get into an economics MSc with the idea of pursuing a PhD after it. I think this plan only makes sense If I manage to get into a very good PhD program, so the question is: What programs in Europe have good placement in the US AND would perhaps accept me? P.S. Talked to Bocconi for ESS the other day and they told me that while they like my background and my GRE, I'm too old for the other students and surely would not fit in socially, so they would be very likely to reject me. Said they would probably accept me for MAFINRISK instead. I was a bit shocked at first, but can see their point. Just gave you this anecdote to add info.
  11. I'm an Egyptian pharmacist who wants to study medicine in the US ..I want to know do I have to study pre-med first or my pharmacy degree will save me from that? and how much money should I have for that?
  12. Hi guys, I just had a question regarding the relative merits of GRE vs GMAT. I know plenty of business schools are now accepting the GRE now in addition to the GMAT. I have already sat the GRE with scores of 167Q, 164V and 5.5AWA. (That equates to 94%, 94% and 98% percentile respectively). I'd really prefer not to bother with the GMAT and submit GRE scores instead. The official policy by many business schools is that they are 'agnostic' in their choice of GMAT/GRE. I just wanted your opinions on how true that is, and whether they really are treated equally? Many thanks PF

  14. Please check this profile and suggest me some Universities in USA for PhD in Accounting (Archeival Research). Are those universities accepted any International students who don't have Master's/Bachelor in Accounting degree from USA? Please infrom those Universities that accept students based on this category: GMAT : 670 IELTS: 7.00 Degree: MBA in Accounting and Information Systems; CGPA: 3.75/4 (From Public University, Bangladesh) BBA CGPA: 3.65/4 (From Public University, Bangladesh) Professional Certification: CFE - Certified Fraud Examiner (ACFE, USA) Crtificate Course: Applied Calculas, Linear Regression (HarvardX Online) Job Experience: 5 years (As a Teacher at Public University in Bangladesh) Publications: 5 articles ( ABDC listed Journal- B and C category) Thanks in advance for your valuable suggestions!
  15. Hello everyone, Could you please evaluate my profile and check if i’m not overestimating my chances? i have only done undergrad so far, and I’m also considering getting an European masters. Undergrad GPA: 3.35 (could go to 3.5) or 8.3/10 (standrised, Brazilian top-3 university), ranking in the 20% of cohort. R.A experience: With a professor that seems to like me enough to write me a good reference letter. Was top 2 in her class. Also another one for two years, that one in a group so maybe not a stellar letter but a good one. Recommendation letters: one from the R.A professor i mentioned, another one from my advisor (top 10 economists in my country, i believe could write a good letter). GRE: not yet, some schools don’t require it so I may give it a second thought. Awards: I think I can win a prize for the best thesis in undergrad. Considering applying to (Msc): Cambridge, Mannheim, BGSE, CEMFI, LSE, Bonn, UCLouvain, Tilburg, Toulouse, PSE and (maybe) Bocconi. I’m fine with doing my PhD from any of these unis (maybe not Bocconi), so I may continue after masters. Does anyone know if I’m aiming too high? Thanks in advance.
  16. Hi people, I plan to apply to a master degree in Europe next year, and would be pleased if you could help evaluating my profile :) Undregad GPA: 8.2/10 (standardized). I graduated in 7th out of 75 people on the class, from a top 3 economics school in Brazil (Insper). Grades: Calculus: A/ Calculus II: B/ Statistics: A/ Statistics II: B/ Econometrics: A/ Econometrics II: B Recommendation letters: I intend to take from tearchers from my university, but I don`t think I was the most memorable student. GRE: Haven`t done yet, but I think I will do well PROS:I`m currently working as a professional economist in the largest investiment bank in Latin America (2 years). CONS: I did not well in my last year (my thesis was a D, for instance). That`s because I was more interested in working at that year than in my thesis. I was thinking about Msc in LSE/ Mphil Oxbridge. Do you think I got a chance in any of them ? If not, what about Barcelona GSE MEF, and Bocconi Msc in Economics and Social Sciences ? Tks!
  17. Hi, Short Background: Left school early because of circumstance and started working. Age of 19/20/21 was store bank manager. Decided to pursue a university degree, however with the lack of A level results my only university offer was from Roehampton University due to my work experience. I graduated with a first class degree in Business Management a year ago and since then have been a manager at one of the big supermarkets. I have looked around and many universities won't classify me as eligible for admission due to my degree. I understand there are entrance examinations and I am willing to undertake these. Just wondering which MBA programmes I should apply to in the UK? Thankyou!
  18. hello i would like opinions i have read that mba is better for finance jobs, what about government consulting? Can you do it with mba? Or the mpa is a must? Other words is mba a paspartou? Also, i have read that mpa is a poor man's mba, having that said, would you prefer a top mpa or a mid mba?
  19. Hi, The first time I took GMAT, I scored 530 (Q39, V25). I know I messed up on the verbal because I didn't time myself well. I decided to retake it and I focused both on verbal and quant while preparing again. However i put more emphasis on quant since I knew I wasn't doing really good on it from what I saw on my practice exams My second attempt- I scored 610 (Q39, V34). Now I'm a female electrical engineer, with an undergrad GPA 3.9/4.0. I was among the top 5% percent of my graduating class and I got As on all of my calculus and statistics courses back on school. So, I'm really confused- why am I performing so badly on quant?? I just don't understand, despite going through all the prep materials, focusing on my weak areas and frequently taking practice exams, I continue to score bad on my quant. My target schools are Rotman, Schulich, Rotterdam. Their average GMAT is around 650 and I'm 40-60 points lower. I was wondering, if my good performance on my undergrad calc and statisitcs courses will help to leverage the low quant GMAT score?
  20. Hello, I am already 24 years old. Am I too old for law school? I already got a bachelors degree in English but I feel like it's a useless degree as I can't get any good job. I love to read a lot. However, I am not sure if I can finance my law education with my current job. Please help me. Am I too late for law school? Usually, people study law at a young age.
