  1. Undergraduate - Top 5 Australian econ school Field : Major in Economics and Finance Undergraduate G.P.A - 6.97/7, university medal Economics courses (Undergrad) : Intro, Intermediate and Honours Level Micro and Macro - all 7s. Micro Policy (7), Macro Policy (7), Intro Metrics (7), Intermediate Metrics (7), Mathematical Economics (6) Maths courses (Undergrad): Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra 1, Advanced Multivariate Calculus and Ord Differential Equations, Mathematical Analysis and Advanced Topics, Calc and Linear Algebra 2, Mathematical Probability, Applied Mathematical Analysis, Statistical Modelling - All 7s GRE: 169 Q LORS : 2 from thesis supervisors and 1 from summer RA at ANU. Advisors should be strong. Applying to : US top 20, Oxbridge and LSE. Top ARE programs Research/Teaching : Corporate Finance TA during uni. Honours thesis awarded undergraduate thesis prize. Concerns : Not too much guidance online regarding Australian applicants. How much would the 6 in math econ hurt me? Looking for : Looking to apply in the cycle at the end of 2022, is there any benefit to additional maths courses? Curious to gain some perspective on the range I should target and competitiveness for ARE programs as well. Any help would be much appreciated.
  2. Using the profile format I've seen in this site: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 20 by USNEWS, BS with Honor in Econ, BS in Maths Undergrad GPA: 3.95/4.0 Type of Grad: - Grad GPA: - GRE: 161V, 170Q, 4.5W Math Courses: Cal I (A+), Cal II (A+), Cal III (A+), Honors Differential Equation (A), Linear Algebra (A-), Real Analysis (A-), Numerical Method (A), Modern Algebra (A), Probability (A), Theoretical Stats (A), Maths of Finance (A) Econ Courses: Inter Micro (A), Inter Macro (A), Game Theory (A), Ph.D. Math Camp (A), Ph.D. Micro I, II, III (A-, A, A), Honor Thesis (A+) Other Courses: - Letters of Recommendation: 1 from my undergraduate professor, 1 from my Honor thesis advisor, 1 from my RA experience at Fed. Not sure how they've written, but I trust that they wrote nice things. Research Experience: 2 years of RA at Fed Teaching Experience: - Research Interests: - SOP: Wrote how my classes and experience as RA prepared me to excel in PhD, and wrote about my possible future research topics. Other: - RESULTS: Acceptances: Waitlists: Rejections: Stanford Pending: UCB, UCLA, Michigan, NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Yale, Chicago, Wisconsin, WashU, ASU, UPenn, Rochester Attending: Stanford just sent me a rejection letter (way earlier than I thought), and I'm starting to feel nervous. It's only 1 rejection out of 14 I've applied, but I fear that I may be rejected by all. Did I aim too high, and should I have applied to more safety schools?
  3. Hi, I'm beginning to focus on applications for Fall 2021 and would really appreciate any insight! I'd love any advice on where I can improve my application/what programs to apply to. Thanks! Test Scores (GRE): 163Q, 158V ; retaking this again in a month - aiming for 167+Q Undergrad GPA: 3.3 (major GPA: 3.8); BS Econ/Math Graduate GPA: 3.5; MS Financial Engineering Research Experience: 1. decision theory research paper (submitting for publishing in 2 weeks with well-known professor in the field) 2. industry research for biggest bank in Europe where my strategies were implemented firm-wide 3. master’s thesis on optimizing factor-based investing strategy & building a model using Bloomberg Teaching Experience: N/A Work Experience: valuation analyst focusing on intellectual property at a litigation consulting firm - 1 year + various internships with banks Concentration Applying to: decision sciences/strategy Number of programs planned to apply to: ~10 Dream Schools: MIT, Duke, University of Michigan, Boston College, UCLA Other Questions: What made you want to pursue a PhD? Working on research papers in school, specifically in my PhD level decision sciences class. I really want to be a professor so I know this is something I need to do. I’ve done almost all of my research papers on sports in uni so I want to continue to work within applicable strategic theory and model building in the same industry/field. The paper I wrote now has a model I built from scratch using Bayesian probability updating and forecasting focusing on the NFL. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? I know my undergrad GPA isn’t great, but I put my major GPA to show that I did well in my major after I switched into it. I want to aim for a 167Q on my GRE. Also I recognize that there are probably a very tiny number of professors that do research on sports and decision theory, if any. I’ve been trying to be open minded when looking at research done at the schools, but I think that regardless I can fit in as there are professor’s who do focus more on applicable strategy versus just working on abstract theory. Any additional specific questions you may have: I’d really appreciate any advice or insight into where to aim in terms of schools as I don’t know anyone who applied to PhD programs so I am figuring it out on my own (first gen college student). I looked at the UT Dallas Ranking (is this the specific list everyone is referring to when they mention ranks??), but again I'm not too positive on where to aim. Thank you so so much in advance, any advice helps!
  4. Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): GMAT - 700 (V45, Q41) Undegrad GPA: 2.8 (English Lit) Graduate GPA: 3.7 (MBA) Research Experience: Currently doing RA work with a professor at my graduate institution within the OB Field and area of interest, will probably try and one one more project at least prior to applications. Teaching Experience: None (not sure if it's relevant but extensive coaching experience elite level athletes) Work Experience: 6 years varied experience: HR & Strategy at a major retailer, consulting at big 4, and most recently leading business operations at an AI startup post-MBA Concentration Applying to: Micro Organizational Behavior (work meaningfulness, motivation, values, emotional labour) Number of programs planned to apply to: 15-20 Dream Schools: Michigan, Northwestern Other Questions: What made you want to pursue a PhD? Primarily intellectual curiosity and tendency towards critical thinking work. Also, a passion for understanding how to make work better. My goal is to ultimately pursue academic research. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? Obviously my GMAT quant and undergrad GPA will be a big issue. I'm wondering to what extent should I address this specifically in my personal statement and/or statement of purpose. Is there any hope in offsetting this with decent grad school grades and a high verbal GMAT score? Any additional specific questions you may have: One of my references will be the professor I'm currently working with as an RA. I don't have super close relationships with my other grad school professors. If I ask a few other professors - is it okay if they are faculty in a different area? Ie. finance/economics?
  5. Hello, I am considering applying for PhD in the US this semester (for Fall 2019) but not really sure where I should be applying to and perhaps you would give me some advices. Undergraduate: Nanyang Technological University (Singapore-Second upper class honors) GPA: 4.28/5 Math courses: (In chronological order) Calculus I/II/III, Linear algebra I/II, Probability and intro to Stats ( all B+), Stats (Higher level) (A) Real analysis and numerical analysis ( both A-) regression analysis (A-) computational economics (A+) Basic optimization (A-) Times series (B+). I did pretty badly for the first year in Singapore as it took quite a while to adjust to the new environment and language barriers. Econs courses: Macro and Micro principles (both B), Intermediate Macro (A), Intermediate Micro (A-), international monetary economics (B), Principles of econometrics (A-) Mathematical Econs (A-) Intermediate Econometrics (A-) Quant Macro (A+) Industrial Org (A) Game theory (A-) Advanced Micro (B+) and Unfortunately I got B+ for the Final Year Project. Graduate: University of Maine Current GPA: 4.00/4 Econs courses: Macro, Micro, Econometrics, Adv topics in Economics: Time series (all A) Maths courses: Biological Modeling and Simulations (A) -- There are not many math courses that I could choose from as it is offered variedly. Expected Remaining courses: Functions of Real variables I, Adv graduate topics in Maths: Linear model, Adv topics in Economics: Econometrics, Independent Studies and either Functions of Real variables II, Topology or Stochastic Systems. All the mentioned degrees are funded by Singapore scholarship and Fulbright Program. I also earned other scholarships to study in Japan and Australia but declined the offers. Work experiences: None as it is restricted by the sponsors. Intended Schools: BU, Boston College, University of Maryland, UMinnesota, Carnegie Mellon, UCSD and a few of those very top tier: Stanford, Yale, Columbia, NYU Fields: Macro Economics, Income Disparity, Industrial organizations, Monetary Policies. LOR: Two letters from Prof. at UMaine (econs prof. graduted from Boston College and math prof. from Cornell and I assume these letters should be a very good one given their responses) and another one either from NTU or UMaine (uncertain but likely positive as I have only attended their classes) GRE scores: Verbal: 146, Quant: 167, AWA: 3.5. What I worry the most is that I did not have any work experiences as RA as well as no publications but rather papers from courses I have attended. The current degree is also non-thesis but as I am worried that I might not finish it on time (by May 2019) I would have to use my own fund until the thesis is done which is not feasible. I have relatively poor grades for undergrad math courses during the early years in undergrad and the verbal score is also way lower than what I have expected it to be. I will have to retake it but if this is what I have to submit, would there be any chance at all that I could get into those programs mentioned? and if there is any other programs that I would have higher chances. Thank you.
  6. Hello, I really appreciate any thoughts on my profile. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Economics with honors, Math, and poli sci Majors from Top 15 economics program Undergrad GPA: 3.97 overall, 4.0 in econ and poli sci, 3.9 in math Type of Grad: NA Grad GPA:NA GRE: GRE: Q170 / V166 / AWA 5 Math Courses: calc 1-3, probability theory, linear algebra, Analysis 1, intro to Stochastic Processes, all A's , diff EQ's, and Theory of Single Variable Calc (AB's), Abstract algebra (IP). Econ Courses (grad-level): , Phd micro theory (IP) Econ Courses (undergrad-level): into micro and macro, honors intermediate micro and macro, stats for econ, econometrics, behavioral econ, public finance, senior thesis class Other Courses: Three poli sci classes I wrote data based analytical papers for. Letters of Recommendation: One from a Poli sci professor who knows me well and I wrote a quantitative paper for. One from my Honors thesis prof. He is a senior lecturer not a professor, but has a PhD from a top program and has taught at top programs. One from CEO of the research company I work for who also runs a research center at my University, PhD in public Policy from top Program. Research Experience: Data driven papers in 3 poli sci courses. Senior thesis for econ. Worked full time last summer and about 25 hours a week during this semester at an education research company, working with large data sets in R. Will work as a full time research analyst after graduating in December. Teaching Experience: Tutored for the athletic department. Worked a lot there last year and a few hours week this year. Tutored a variety of classes, intro intermediate micro/macro and advanced electives. Met with students individually and in groups on a weakly basis so I feel its comparable to TA. Research Interests: Public Policy, labour, political economy SOP: talked about papers and work experience. Emphasized my interest in public policy. Spent way too much time looking at it so hoping its pretty good. Other: This is my fifth year of undergrad; I am only in two classes right now. Applying to: Mostly top 15 with a few 20-40 range, and Harvard Kennedy school for Public Policy PhD Concerns: working a lot and spent a lot of time on apps and GRE. I couldn’t put as much time into PhD Micro theory as I would have liked, at least that’s the excuse I am currently using haha. Will likely get a B, maybe an AB. I’d be personally happy with that, but I have heard this does not look good to graduate schools, and am worried I will have overreached with most of my apps if this is the case. Very grateful for any input!!
  7. [h=1]What universities do you recommend me for applying for PhD in management (probably marketing)[/h] Wadup, fam? So here's my profile: BS electronics engineering in Guatemala, 3.1 GPA. Master in Management Tulane, 3.8 GPA. GRE 152V 158Q. Relevant experience 3 years (1 year working in Microsoft as trainee and now Mrktn Manager for 13 countries in Microsoft). I got my master's thesis submitted for publication and I've been teaching assistant before. I know this falls short for MIT, but which universities you reckon would give me a serious chance? Thanks
