Any professional advice for my situation? I got dismissed from my previous PhD program at a top B-School not due to my academic performance (my GPA for for the year is about 3.8) but because of some relational misunderstanding with my supervisors who then found some reason to exclude me:sorrow: Please kindly help advise if I can apply to other PhD programs in the US. My major was management and have had a B+ journal publication. My GMAT was 730. SOS!

I know that a lot of people work as an RA for 2 years before they apply for PhD programs. How common is it for people to have co-author and have a top-3 Finance publication while working as an RA? Is this a realistic expectation to have? And conditional on having such a publication, how much does it help with the applications?

How much of publication at a say, second-tier journal help for PhD admissions in economics? My advisor thinks it's worth a shot, and I might try to publish my senior thesis (or hopefully at least R&R) before applying to PhD programs. If you have any thoughts on this, it would be great if you could share! (Just for a reference, here is my previous profile evaluation: https://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/160696-profile-evaluation.html)

I'm currently working on my senior thesis and my advisor finds my research worthy of publication. I plan on working for two years or so upon graduating, and so I might look into publishing during that time period. But I am aware that publishing before PhD is extremely difficult, but say that I managed to do so at a decent journal - will it be a significant factor (more than other factors) that will help me during the application process for top schools? I'm trying to see if it's even worth putting the efforts in publishing before PhD, as the majority of people say it's virtually impossible. Thanks!

Recently I took the gre in July and got my scores q-700 v-460.. I decided to retake GRE in the revised pattern in october and got q-630-730 v-400-500. I nearly took six practice tests and all the score were between the range q-750-800 v-520-620, Q-750-800 V-500-600 q-750-800 v-480-580 q-730-800 v-520-620 q-750-800 v-460-560 q-750-800 v-540-640 Before the exam day i had severe viral fever and it continued onto the exam day. Guys I was feeling totally sick and had the feeling to quit the test. But I gave my best(:() during the exam. Guys what am I supposed to do? I was very much interested in wireless communication and I worked hard in my UG and published a research paper in IEEE. Now I fear whether my admission in a research university are totally down to zero. Branch: ECE UG percentage: 72 Achievements: Published a research paper 4G mobile communications (IEEE explore) Published a research paper based in RFID (BCS- British Computing Society) Published a research paper in SQL injection(BCS- British Computing Society) Present 3 papers in college level symposiums. Started a website with my friends and it will be launched in November. Received the best student award from my college for two consecutive years for publishing papers. The publications mentioned above are done with my friends. For every one reading my post please comment, because it will help me to take clear decisions. I am applying to eth zurich, nus, ntu, epfl, university of Toronto, Mcgill university, British columbia university. Please review my profile and suggest me some more universities in the US. Also do I stand a chance in getting admissions in the above listed universities.?????????????????????? Waiting for your valuable replies... For undergrad aiming for the top10 places, which is more efficient for admission purposes, an independent research (with good advisor, which can be a good training and learning the process of doing solid research) OR some research experience (like RA, though like treated as a slave and learn by little of research skills, could possibly lead to a co-authored publication in well-ranked journals, but the date to appear is obviously after the admission season)? This is the final year of my degree (I'm applying for Fall 2011) and I'm looking for a way which is more appealing to the adcoms of top10.
