  1. Hi, I recently graduated from my undergrad and will start working as a pre-doctoral RA for two years at a Top 10 school. I graduated from a Top 20-25 school with Economics major, but my GPA is low (3.3-3.4) with not so good grades in math (will post a refined profile evaluation later). A lot of unexpected events happened to me during undergrad, which partially explains my grades but also I was very low in terms of my self esteem and motivation, which didn't help academically. It is mostly on me that I failed to overcome a lot of personal obstacles completely, and I am trying to do my best in the next two years to improve myself, both personally and academically. I was talking with my research advisor, under whom I have learned to do research and eventually completed my senior honors thesis. He is somewhat well-known in the field, and told me that he sees my paper as potentially publishable at a second-tier journal upon several changes and many revisions. I have been wondering if I should embark on this, as I know that this will take a lot of work and there is also no guarantee that I will get it published. Here is my question: I know it'll be hard, but If I do get it published, will this help me get into a Top 15, even Top 10 Phd program? I know my current profile isn't enough to get me into these schools, and was wondering if this will be a big factor that will help me get into these schools. Thanks in advance for your help.
  2. Type of Undergrad: Top 30 US, B.S. Mathematical Economics Undergrad GPA: 3.96 GRE: Not taken yet, not concerned US student Math courses: Real Analysis I (A), Ordinary Differential Equations (A), Calculus series (A), Linear Algebra (A), Statistical modeling (A); plan to take optimization theory, intro to math modeling, computer science, and probability before graduating Econ courses: Econometric theory (A), applied econometrics (A-), quantitative asset pricing (A-), monetary theory (A), international finance (A) Letters of recommendation: 1. Professor who I have RA'd for 2 years now, coauthor on 3 papers published together 2. Professor for real analysis, strong relationship, he has an economics background and we connected well 3. Department chair, 2 courses and independent study Research Experience: Published 3 articles in history of thought journals as coauthor with recommender #1, 2 were peer reviewed. Plan to write a senior thesis. Interning at Fed virtually this summer in macro. Concerns: Undergrad school ranking, research is published but qualitative (journal of economic education), not enough math background Questions: Do I go straight to PhD or try for Fed RAship/predoc? What schools are reach/target/safety?
  3. Hello, I am searching for some evaluation on my candidacy for top PhD programs, as I am hoping to be ready to apply by this fall/winter for 2021 admission. My background: Undergrad GPA: 3.7 from a large state school with a Top 25 PAR ranking (for small-faculty schools) Masters GPA: 3.7 MAcc from large state school (5-year concurrent program with undergrad degree) Research Experience: Served as an undergrad RA on a research project that was published in Contemporary Accounting Research. Worked as a student researcher for a school-sponsored thinktank for 1 year as well. Teaching experience: Worked as a grad teaching assistant for 1.5 years. Work included teaching labs, proctoring tests, grading, and test prep. Work Experience: 2.5 years (3 busy seasons) in public accounting with PwC; 2 years in management consulting (Fortune 500 clients). CPA Licensed Math: Here is where it gets sticky (hopefully here and not before). I took AP Calc in HS and got a 5, so I technically have Calc I and II college credits. I also took and passed Business Statistics I and II. Currently starting to plan for the GMAT. I took a practice exam on mba.com and projected a score of 700. I have been a good test taker historically, and I think with 45-ish days of study I can get into the 730-740 range. Research preferences: Probably financial or audit (not sure yet, is that bad?). Either way I am interested in archival methodology. Letters of recommendation would come from well respected and published professors, including two that have published in JAR. All three are tenured, if that matters. Here are my questions (any and all input welcome): 1. What is the best method for me to get up-to-snuff on math? If I have the credits, is it a question of whether I understand the math? Or will they want to see recent courses passed for calc/calc-based probability and stats? 2. With my resume, will a 720-740 GMAT suffice? 3. Is my research experience worth mentionting? 4. What else can I do to improve my profile? Thank you in advance. I am excited to get started on this journey.
  4. Just wondering how much emphasis I should place on the following factors when 'selecting' PhD advisers to approach: 1) If a PhD adviser has a few published Top 5's versus one who has published consistently in top field and second tier general interest journals. The reason I ask this question is because I have heard that academics with Top 5's help push PhD students towards Top 5 publications more so than those without. Although, I'm not sure how true this is, it's just what I have heard. 2) The quality/rigour of the core and field courses. Assuming a strong enough Math background would someone be able to self-study sufficiently to overcome weaker courses 3) Being in a good academic location surrounded by other universities conducting good research. Maybe this network effect has good influence on further developing ideas. I know there are other considerations to have in mind such as placement ranking, supervisor compatibility, however, just wanted to know how much emphasis I should place on these in particular.
  5. After I graduated with my bachelors, I have now worked for a few years doing research and writing outside of academia. I wrote a bestselling book on a niche industry, but most of my work has been published as white papers or in major media outlets. I'm trying to get a few journal papers published in time for PhD applications. My GRE scores are 165 V, 168 Q and I can get very positive LORs from my academic colleagues. I have a GPA of 3.8 with a psychology degree from a top-tier liberal arts college. However, I know my background is quite unconventional, and I didn't do anything remarkable during my undergraduate studies other than some volunteer RA work in psychology. What would a b-school think of this unorthodox background for a management/strategy/OB program? Is it important that I do something like an RA position with a b-school professor to improve my academic credentials?
  6. For those interested, here is a link to the just published version of Path to an economics PhD.
  7. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 3 Korean University in Econ Undergrad GPA: 3.57 Type of Grad: Top 3 Korean University in Econ Grad GPA: ~ 3.72 GRE: 155V; 170Q; 3.5W TOEFL: 98 Math Courses: Undergrad: Frst Year Calculus B, Linear Algebra C+, Real Analysis (B+) Linear Algebra (A+) Econ Courses: Grad: Macro I (A), Macro II (A) Macro I (B+) Macro II (A) Econometrics (B+) Time Series Analysis (A) Panel data Analysis (A) International Economics (A) Development (A) Industrial Organization (A) Labor economics (A) Letters of Recommendation: 1) my advisor in MS degree. I am working for R.A and T.A for him. 2) Now, I'm writing two papers about international economy with professor in U.S.(Top 30 tenure) I will ask for a recommendation letters. Paper: I have one published paper on tourism management (SSCI), and I got revision to another paper (SSCI) Teaching Experience: NA Research Interests: International economics, Development Other: Concerns: 1. I know my math grade is really bad to get admission from Top 20 or 30. So I will apply for the course from over top 30 (from top 30 to 60) Is this still too high? 2. I have a published paper on Tourism management (SSCI) And I'm also working a paper and got revision from journal. I wonder this published paper will help me get admission.
