  1. What is the best ranking to use to compare European PhD programs? Ranking by record of graduates Economic Institution Rankings | IDEAS/RePEc or general ranking of departments Economics rankings: Economics Departments | IDEAS/RePEc or some other ranking? The discrepancy is quite large in many cases e.g. EUI Florence is 26th globally by record of graduates but 224th (!) on the standard ranking; LSE is 7th and 21st respectively; Barcelona GSE is 27th and 11th resp.; Mannheim 44th and 97th; Toulouse SE 55th and 10th.
  2. Hi all, New to the forum. I have a few basic, rather native, questions. 1. Do the job markets for ag econ and general econ Ph.D. graduates overlap a lot? 2. Do ag econ Ph.D. graduates have a good chance at industry/non-academic jobs? 3. For industry jobs, does the department ranking matter as much as the university's overall ranking? For example, the University of Florida's ag econ is ranked pretty low, but the university as a whole is decently ranked (top 100 in ARWU and USNWR globally). So if I am targeting an industry career after PhD, should I go, in this particular case, to Florida or Kansas State (ranked considerably higher among ag econ departments but pretty terribly in overall university ranking) (let's assume that I have professors I want to work with at both these places). Look forward to the response. Thanks
  3. Hey Everyone, I am a strategic management applicant and I was wondering what the best way is to determine "rankings" for PhD programs. I see forum users talking about the top 5 or top 50 schools rather frequently and I am a bit confused about how this is being determined. I am trying to balance my research fit, which is of course the most important thing, with a quality school ranking so I can achieve a good placement upon finishing. I found the UT Dallas top 100 ranking and I am finding this to be the only real ranking available. Since I am in strategy, I ranked by journal and selected only the strategic management related journals through 2015 -2020. Although, there is much overlap with OB in terms of journals so it is hard to differentiate. I also tried only selecting Academy of Management (AMJ) and Strategic Management Journal (SMJ). The results do not seem to be representative of what people are saying. For example, Minnesota is ranked very high at number 4 for just AMJ and SMJ and yet I do not frequently see Minnesota hailed as Top 5. Yet Berkeley is 89th, Stanford is 61st, and Columbia is 26th and seem to be considered some of the best. Are these schools riding on their national reputation or MBA rankings? Or perhaps, on the non-management departments research? I guess I am confused if there is a better ranking system somewhere or if maybe some users here know the reputation for strategic management specifically among schools that might help me decide which programs will land better placements given that they have scholars focused on my research interest. Thanks in advance for your valuable insights.
  4. Please help improve my understanding of rankings of management departments. I have taken a first pass by using UTD's ranking based on research productivity in the following journals between 2010-2019: AOMjournal, ManSci, AOMreview, Admin Sci Quarterly, OrgSci, SMJ. I have a number of questions related to this ranking: 1. Does this ranking align with your own perceptions of relative department quality? 2. UTD's list of top 20 departments includes many places with non-top 20 MBAs. For example, USC, Penn State, Toronto are all top 10 in the UTD list. They outrank Stanford, Columbia, and Northwestern. Why doesn't faculty productivity align with MBA rankings? Do Stanford, Columbia, and Northwestern just not have faculty who are active in management scholarship? 3. Does the UTD ranking align well with phd program quality and job market placements in management academia? i.e., should management/strategy/ob phds from USC, Penn State, Toronto expect similar or better job market prospects than graduates of similar fields from Stanford, Columbia, and Northwestern? I am ultimately trying to get a sense for how people perceive these different departments. I would appreciate any comments that would help me add some context to the UTD rankings. 5. I am hoping to draw on urch's collective wisdom to construct a Top10 or Top20 list of strategy phd programs that are more quantitative/econ-heavy in nature. I was able to find three strong programs, based on a review of course requirements for students, faculty research, and job market placements: UCLA Strategy Toronto Rotman Strategic Management Duke Fuqua Strategy Can I get your opinion on the three programs above? Would you say all of them are Top10 among strategy programs that take a quant/econ approach? How do they fare among strategy programs more generally? I have only identified three programs so far. Can you help me expand this list? I would like to end up with a Top10 or Top20 list if possible.
  6. Hi all, I have been having a hard time to think about accounting schools ranking. Jindal and BYU give quite different rankings for colleges, how should I go about it? How to make judgments about accounting departments vs schools?
  7. I WONDER ABOUT ARE PHD RANKING .. I DONT KNOW ABOUT IT AND NO INFORMATION.. can i get that 1- 30 OR 1-50 program ranking information? AND THEN..UTK, MISSOURI CLUMBIA , U OF KENTUCKY 'S ARE PROGRAM RANKING
  8. Hello everyone, First of all, as I am new to this forum, hello everyone reading this post :) I am a British student currently in my penultimate year. I know what the ranking for OB for the British unis is but not sure about the American ones. Is there even any ranking for the top 10 unis? Or is it simply the case that whatever university from the top 10 you apply to it is going to be amazing for OB anyway. The order I thought about would be Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UPenn, UC Berkley, Columbia, NYU Stern, Chicago, Yale. While I know there are rankings available online, there is simply this thing you just know from being in a particular country. So any advice on my list, whether you agree, disagree, would add or remove any universities, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  9. Is UTD as good as it's ranking suggests? I'm talking about marketing (quant) specifically but the whole business school seems to be very solid. I considered the possibility that their ranking was built to make them look (way) better, but even if we choose only Marketing Science and Management Science and order by number of articles they are still top 10. This is way better than Yale, Berkeley and Stanford for example. Maybe it doesn't adjust for department size but still wouldn't explain the discrepancy between how it ranks and how it seems to be regarded (or maybe they really are pretty good and I have the wrong impression). Thoughts?
  10. Hello friends! I'm planning to apply for Quantitative Marketing programs this year (and hopefully start in 2019). I came up with a list of departments where faculty research topics that interest me. The thing is, I have only a very rough idea of how these departments compare in terms of ranking. I looked at the UTD and US news rankings, but I'm not sure if the first one takes into account department size and the second one is an MBA ranking (which is maybe some kind of b-school prestige ranking?). I would like to know the opinion of folks around here. How would you rank the following schools: Minnesota, Rochester, Toronto, Michigan, Southern California, UCSD, Maryland, Wash U (Olin)? Are they even in the same tier (top 10, 20, 30)? Also if anybody can contribute with information we would normally have only after enrolling (or visiting), it would be greatly appreciated. For example, I heard the attrition rate at Chicago Booth is high, Wisconsin and Minnesota are in regions really cold while San Diego and Berkeley have perfect weather, Columbia is located in a very expensive region, Rochester is very specialized, etc.

  12. Hi! I have a question about placement. What would be a good placement? I know this is pretty subtle sometimes, and I would love to put my question in another way: Should I refer to publication ranking or the general USNEWS ranking when weighing placement? For example, if a low BYU ranking accounting program places one student to a 120ish USNEWS ranking school with a rather high BYU ranking accounting program, would this be considered as a good placement? On the contrary, if a program gets to place its students to big names with relatively low BYU ranking, would this be considered even better or worse than the previous one? Thanks :)
  13. Hi, I am going through the university programs to finalize the list of universities I will apply to. The general idea recommended is to select approx. 2-3 programs from each bracket (i.e: 0-10, 10-20, etc) using the UT Dallas ranking. However, what I am concerned about is that Stanford, for example, is ranked 13th while University of North Carolina is ranked 9th but I am sure the admission at Stanford would be much more competitive. How much should I factor in the ranking or the general reputation of the university when selecting universities to apply to? Can you have a universities like Yale ranked at 38 or Georgetown ranked 56 as you back up? Thanks
  14. Hi everyone, I need an advice. I've been admitted into Bologna MSc Economics (LMEC), and I have also some offers from reputable UK universities such Nottingham, Essex, Bristol, Southampton... All one year program (instead in Bologna two), some programs are MSc other MRes. My question is... Bologna should be compared with which UK universities? It worth the extra year? My goal is to get admitted in a good PhD program in Europe. Here Bologna placement from various year: LMEC students admitted to prestigious programs! - LMEC - Laurea Magistralis in Economics - Università di Bologna LMEC students admitted to prestigious programs! - LMEC - Laurea Magistralis in Economics - Università di Bologna Students admitted to prestigious graduate programs! - LMEC - Laurea Magistralis in Economics - Università di Bologna Is this placement comparable with UK universities listed above? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
  15. I have been trying to get this information online and I do not want to get into the whole ordered ranking games. I know there are dozens of rankings out there for business schools in general, and the marketing specialization in particular. However, if you are applying for quant marketing, you would really only want to know schools with good quant marketing programs. That would amount to active, well revered, well published quant marketing faculty members who still guide doctoral students, and probably good econ and stat departments (where quant marketing students will end up taking several courses). Prestige probably matters too, especially when it is placement time. I have tried looking at some of the theses produced by, and initial placements of the recent marketing graduates, the recent papers published by the faculty members, and just the program website in general. I have also looked at the much talked about UTD rankings based on just the marketing journals. Now I want your opinion. Which quant marketing programs would you put at the top (need not number it, just the top 5 or 6 would do)?
  16. Hi guys, I really hope someone can help me. I've been accepted to several universities and one of these is the London School of Business and Finance for an MBA in Marketing Management, but I can't find any ranking about the program, so I'm wondering if you will be able to help... Thank you very much Cheers

  18. Hi Guys, I had some free time with me, so I compiled the rankings of the 5 major sources(FT, BW, US News, Forbes, Economist) and came up with an analysis of my own. It is a little different in its methodology from the other compilation ranking, Poets and Quants, as I also used Medians along with mean to come up with the final ranking. Here's the link to my ranking, in the blog. The Story: The Grand US MBA Rankings There's some rich data and analysis available here, so I believe you shall all like it. Best, Prateek :) Request- Though I have proofread the ranking a few times, it can be that I left a few errors. Please help me make it error free by pointing out any error you may find. Thanks!
  19. Hey everyone, I thought it would be interesting to look at programs that for one reason or another are slept on. Basically, admissions-wise, they aren't as competitive as they should be or the department isn't balanced (like most programs outside the top 20-30). At the same time, it could be used as a good compilation of information on what fields lower ranked schools are strong in. I tried to use the search function to find field rankings. There was one post attempting to make top 5 lists for every field but the same group of schools kept appearing in every field list. This is of course because the top schools are good in everything but not every applicant is applying to top 10 or 20 programs. Also when people ask about field rankings, they are usually given links to the Grijalva and Nowell paper which is a few years old now (and also suffers somewhat from the same flaw that the previously mentioned thread had) or the econphd rankings which is even older. The thread title is misleading because I don't think a ranking should be created, rather just a list of programs that applicants have come across that are much stronger in a certain field than others. We can also include programs that are highly ranked but receive less applicants than other top schools (what the poster Nanashi called the "location effect" in a few other threads) Wow, sorry about the long post, and I hope everyone understands what I'm saying
  20. How would you rank the university of Toronto? I am looking to apply to econ grad schools this fall and have been considering Toronto. It's somewhat close to home which I view as a plus, but I don't know much about it. According to econphd.net's rankings it had a strength in Trade and Development Rankings: Trade & Development, but has this changed. I am interested in Trade so this is a plus for me. Also as a US citizen would my funding possibilities be lower? Does anyone have an inside view they would care to share?
  21. Hey guys! I've got a quick question - Is there any example of decent researcher coming from low-ranking PhD program? I've receive a funded offer from low-ranking econ PhD program(SUNY-Albany). My main interest is in public choice, political economy, and economic history. My short term goal is to have my first job in academia, and ultimate(?) goal is to do decent researches and contribute to economics and, hopefully, to the society with my ideas. I'm happy that I have one funded offer but a bit worried about the placement record of the program.(Recent Ph.D. Placements - Department of Economics) I've got to decide before the 15th. Any advice?
