  1. Hi everyone, I took real analysis this past semester and unfortunately got an A-. I heard that nowadays for your application to be considered competitive, getting an A in real analysis is almost a 'must'. I am aiming for T30 programs, and I wonder how much of a negative impact this A- in real analysis will have on my application. A bit more information on my math background (I'm an undergrad double majoring in Econ and Math at the U of Michigan): Calc I-III (As) Linear algebra (A-) Intro to Probability (A) ODE (A) Abstract Algebra (A-) GRE quant (170) Also, I wonder what I could do to offset the negative impact of this A- in real analysis. I am a rising senior and will be applying this fall, so I only have this spring/summer semester and the upcoming fall semester. I have thought about: Retake real analysis in the spring and get an A+ (but after second thought I feel like the marginal utility of this strategy is pretty low, considering that taking courses in the spring is expensive and time-consuming, and might affect other work I have over the summer, namely thesis and RA work) Take a more advanced analysis class and get a good grade. However, the second course in analysis is not offered in the upcoming spring/summer/fall. Would taking it online be an option? If so, where can I take it? Take grad-level micro theory. However, I couldn't get permission to enroll from the instructor due to the fact that I haven't taken game theory ( the policy to enroll in grad-level econ course here is a bit stricter) What other things can I do to demonstrate that I am mathematically prepared for grad-level coursework? Any comment/help/advice will be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance :)
  2. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Large state school with very low ranked PhD Program (edited to include BA in Mathematics and Economics) Undergrad GPA: 3.92 Type of Grad: 1 graduate math course in Real Analysis, 4 courses in graduate economics Grad GPA: 3.8 GRE: 165q, 169v, 5.5w Math Courses: calculus IV A, linear algebra (A), undergrad real analysis (A), probability theory (A), differential equations (A), graduate real analysis (A), senior statistics course (A), Econ Courses: intermediate micro/macro (A, A), econometrics (A), econometrics II (grad, B), econometrics III (grad, A), Phd Micro (A) , honors thesis (A) Letters of Recommendation: One from a professor who went to Duke, the director of the graduate program, and the associate dean of research, all professors I've had in classes. Teaching Experience: None Research experience: One year as a paid research assistant. One semester working on my thesis, which was my writing sample and is of publishable quality (according to my advisor) SOP: Talked mostly about my research experience, and coursework. I have a pretty clear path (econometrics or micro theory), so I emphasized that, while mentioning I'm not married to any field Schools applied to: MSU, OSU, University of Washington, Oxford, Yale, Princeton, Northwestern, Harvard, MIT, Boston University, University of Chicago The big question is did I overreach, and do I need to correct or seriously plan to enter industry or get a masters in Math or something. Any input is appreciated
  3. Hi guys, I just received letter grades for this semester and it's somewhat frustrating. Judging from the previous thread, it seems that a B for Real Analysis is quite critical, and it also happened to me... What makes problems worse is that it is not the only B. Could you guys give me some advice on what to do? Would taking grad math courses help? (yes, I am the one who recently posted a thread about taking grad math courses, but this time with a more critical issue...) Below is a detailed look on my math/stat courses taken: Calculus I,II (A,A), Linear Algebra I,II (A,A+), Analysis I,II (baby rudin; A,A), Intro to Probability (A), Mathematical Statistics (A), Differential Equations (B+), Numerical Analysis (B+), Stochastic Processes (A+), Applied Math (A+), Topology I (A), Real Analysis (Lebesgue measure; B+) That B+ for Real Analysis really breaks my heart...
  4. Hey guys. I will be applying to PhD programs this year for the fall 2021 year. I will graduate with a economics major and math minor. Here's my profile: Undergrad: 3.65 GPA from large state school. Grad course: Grad level Public finance econ course and issues in american economic history which included a research paper. GRE: 166 Quant Research: Not really much to be honest. Multiple classes that involved research projects but no RA experience. LOR: I can get three that will be good from economic professors at my school. Two should be very good, but it isn't an incredible economics department so they won't be from the types of professors who teach at harvard obviously. econ courses: econometrics, intermediate micro and macro, labor, plus some others. all A's math courses: Calc 1-4, linear algebra, differential equations, and real analysis. A's in all except a B in real analysis. I know I am not going to Harvard or Yale or that type of school, but what type of schools do you think I could fit at. I will also apply to RA jobs so I could do that for a couple years and then go to PhD. Be honest with me. Thanks Edited to add that I have knowledge of stata. Primarily taught myself but also used some in classes.
  5. I am a final year undergrad student looking forward to applying for PhD probably in 2022. I was wondering if taking grad math courses (grad Real Analysis - Hilbert space, grad Probability - measure based prob theory) would enhance my chances. I have taken most of the relevant math courses (analysis, real analysis, topology, stochastic processes, etc) and I think I would most probably get at least A's from the grad courses as well. If so, should I take them, or would it be a waste of time? Always thank you for great advice (btw, I am looking forward to studying financial economics)
  6. The following are topics included in the course that I'm considering taking: "Metric spaces, differentiation of functions of several real variables, the implicit and inverse function theorems, Riemann integral on Rn, Lebesgue measure on Rn, and the Lebesgue integral." Is it worth taking? I already took Honors Analysis 1 and received a good grade. The course topics included are: "Properties of the real number system, sequences, continuous functions, topology of the real line, compactness, derivatives, the Riemann integral, sequences of functions, uniform convergence, infinite series and Fourier series." Thanks.
  7. My college doesn't offer Real Analysis. What other class should I take or is similar to Real Analysis?
  8. Hello all, I just graduated from an undergrad double majoring in Econ and Math from a Top 25 school, and am planning to do a 1 (or 2 year) RA at a Top 10 Econ school that I was accepted to starting this summer. I took a non econ/math gen ed this semester, and turns out I got an F (talking to other students, the professor was very unfair, and plan on talking to the professor and try to raise it up at least to a C, but no guarantee since some professors are very persistent). My overall GPA is around 3.6 (with three Ws in non econ-related courses), and my major GPA (Econ, Math) is around 3.7. I've struggled initially with math (including a C+ on Real Analysis #1), but improved in advanced courses - re-took Real Analysis #1 got an A, got A's in Real Analysis #2, General Topology (grad-level), Intro to Measure Theory (grad-level), Abstract Algebra, proof-based Linear Algebra, Real Analysis (grad-level), Stochastic Processes (grad-level, stats course). Econ courses - mix of As and Bs. I was told that I have an extensive research experience, and plan on taking PhD Micro and PhD Econometrics during my predoctoral RA. My advisor thinks that it is highly possible for me to get As in them, which I will try my best in. And if I do, my advisor thought I would have a shot at a Top 10 school. But this was before this F came out, and now it's worrying me. How much of an impact could it have on my application, based on my background so far? Your thoughts will be appreciated, thanks!
  9. What does it mean, if we have video application invite? Is it a pre-screener for the Real interview? Also, how to prepare, and what do they expect??
  10. Unfortunately, I haven't. But I have an elderly distant family member, a teacher lady far from sci-fi or supernatural realm, who spoke to us very privately of an experience back in the '90s of an UFO sighting, and never went out of family with it being afraid of ridicule. There are a lot of us here, various backgrounds and age and observation opportunities. All anonymous. CMDR XYZ. No one will investigate you, make reports for your employers or superiors, it won't affect your promotion nor will question your sanity. So, does anyone here have a real life UFO/alien story?
  11. Hi all, I'm new to Urch and I have some questions: A bit of introduction about myself, long story short, I ended up staying an extra year in undergrad and earned a degree in primary major in econ and secondary major in math. Honestly, up to senior first semester was tough (I almost failed the first sequence of real analysis - got a C), but I pulled myself up and got As in math classes afterwards in the remaining three semesters, including an A in retake of the first sequence of real analysis, and As in second sequence of real analysis, advanced real analysis (grad-level math course), stochastic processes (technically in stats department), measure theory, topology, abstract algebra, and in (honors) probability. Upon graduation, I worked for a professor at a top 10 institution as an RA, and there I took PhD-level Econometrics and Microeconomics (got As). And my question is: my overall GPA is around 3.67 (as I also had several not so great grades prior to Senior 1st semester - I had hard times with math and sometimes even with econ but things started to click more during my senior second semester), but during the last 4 semesters in undergrad (that is, senior year and the extra year), my GPA is 3.87. In this sense, 1. Is it worth mentioning both my overall GPA and my GPA during the last 4 semesters in my CV? 2. Also, any thoughts to how the admissions committee (including top schools) will think of my math grades? I know it will be rough, but I want to shoot for and apply to top schools if possible (including the top 10). Please help me out and let me know what your opinions are to these two questions! Thanks :)
  12. Hi. A short question. Is it a good idea to describe what was taught in courses(especially math) you took in your SOP? Here we say "introduction to analysis" instead of "real analysis" and "real analysis" instead of "measure theory" Also I have some seminar courses that do not say what were their topic. So, all in all, is it a good strategy to describe the courses? Thank you:)
  13. Hey guys, I'm planning on applying to US PhD programs this fall. I am currently enrolled in a top masters in economics program in Canada. I have done well in all the few math courses I've taken (A+ in calc 1-3, lin alg, ODE) but I have not taken a course in real analysis. I am wondering how much this will hurt me if I'm applying to top 20 US econ PhD programs? Will good grades in my masters program and strong letters be able to make up for not having a real analysis course? I have been told by my advisors that I have a strong profile for top 20 programs, but I am worried by what I have read online about the importance of real analysis in admissions. The math camp for my masters program covered some topics in real analysis (set theory) and the courses involve a lot of proof writing, but I don't have a great sense of how US programs view the top Canadian masters programs. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.
  14. I am now deciding between which 2 of the following 3 courses to take 1) Optimisation Theory: Unconstrained and equality optimization models, constrained problems, optimality conditions for constrained extrema, convex sets and functions, duality in nonlinear convex programming, descent methods, conjugate direction methods and quasi-Newton methods. Textbook: "S. Boyd and L. Vandenberghe, Convex Optimization, Cambridge University Press, 2004." 2) Real Analysis: This is an introductory course on the Lebesgue integration theory on real line. Topics include: measurable sets, measurable functions, Lebesgue integral, Fatou's lemma, monotone convergence theorem, Lebesgue dominated convergence theorem and differentiation. Textbook: Real Analysis by H.L. Royden 3) Mathematical Economics (offered by Econ Department, and the grading is more lenient): This course discusses basic tools in mathematical analysis and their applications to mathematical economics. Mathematical topics include sets, functions, sequences, continuity, open sets, closed sets, compact sets, maximum existence theorem, separating hyperplanes, and fixed points. Economic topics include preference, utility, demand, competitive equilibrium, and Pareto optimality Textbook: Lecture notes by professor I have taken Calculus I to III, Linear Algebra, ODE, Probability, Basic Real Analysis, Stochastic Processes, Stochastic Calculus. I am interested in doing macro/finance stuffs (probably theory). I am quite interested in (2) as I quite enjoy Basic Real Analysis and Measure seems necessary for theory. (3) is in fact a good choice since it covers lots of topics including optimisation and fixed points, but it may seem less sophisticated. That's why I am struggling between these courses, particularly (1) and (3). Does anybody have some thoughts on this. Thanks a lot!!!!!!
  15. I've done bad in some of the intro courses, but got A's in the advanced courses: Calculus I - III (As), intro to proof ©, basic matrix algebra ©, advanced matrix algebra (A), discrete math (B), linear algebra (A), Real Analysis I (A), Real Analysis II (A), algebraic structures (A), differential equations (A), Stochastic Methods (A), operations research (A). Will this hurt my chances (the C's and a B)? I'm from a top 20 private research university in the states. Also, feel free to give me any advice. I'd like to go on a top econ phd in the future :/
  16. Hey all, I'm a junior at a top 10 undergrad/top 15-20 econ program, and am in the process of choosing classes for next semester. Due to scheduling conflict, I can only take either Intermediate Macro or Real Analysis next spring. Since I am applying to grad school next year, I would like to take PhD Micro I in the fall as a senior. So I am wondering whether I should take Macro next semester and Real Analysis concurrently with PhD Micro I in the fall. Is Real Analysis necessary to do well in PhD Micro I? I would greatly appreciate advice from anyone who has taken PhD Micro I (using MWG). Thank you!
  17. Hi everyone I'm new here. As a second year undergrad I have recently decided that I may want to pursue a Phd in economics in the near future. Lucky I have been getting prepared in my math courses at a good pace, and am almost ready to take real analysis among other math courses. My dilemma is whether I should attempt analysis or the honours version. Thus far, I have only been taking standard calculus coursework, which will still let me get into honours analysis (as I have done well in prior calculus coursework) however my concern is if I do honors analysis, I will not be as prepared for the class as those students in the honours stream of calculus. Will adcoms even notice anything wrong if I do a standard analysis course? Also the courses look like: Analysis I: Logic, sets, functions; real numbers, completeness, sequences; continuity and compactness; differentiation; integration; sequence and series of functions. Text: Introduction to real analysis (various authors) Honours analysis I: Real and complex numbers, topology of metric spaces, sequences and series, continuity, differentiation, Riemann-Stieltjes integration. Rigorous approach throughout Text: W Rudin Ch 1-6
