Hello everyone, Does anyone have any advice about whether or not it's a good idea to add a 4th referee for the universities that give you the option? I know that Duke recommends that you don't unless you really feel it's necessary which is fair enough, but others like Chicago, Cornell and Brown give you the option of adding up to 5 referees and don't seem to recommend against it. Is it likely to be an advantage to provide 4 referees for schools like Chicago etc, or is it definitely better to stick to 3 for all of them? Many thanks.

Admitted to a top 20-30 finance phd program but feel underplaced. Now I am coauthoring a paper with a senior professor and considering turning down my accepted offer and re-applying this December. I know it's not right but I think I should do what is good for me in the long run. I haven't talked with my referees so I am not sure whether they are willing to write a letter for me if I renege my offer. If you were me, what would you do? Any suggestions and thoughts will be appreciated. BTW I hope to enter top 15 program. Has anybody turned down their accepted offer and re-applied? Need your advice.

I am applying for PhD Finance applications this fall and have 3 referees lined up. They all talk about my research experience so I was wondering if it would make sense to replace one of these referees with one who can attest to my experience as a teaching experience? I already have such a referee lined up but just wanted to get a second opinion on whether it is a good idea or not.
