Hi everyone! I am applying this year intake for PhD Economics. In my SOP I have cited a couple of paper as my inspiration/motivation; shall I make a reference list at the end of my SOP? or I skip it since it increases number of pages ? Thank you

I'm an undergraduate who will be taking the PhD micro sequence at my school (top-30 US econ) beginning in the fall. My school uses MWG; I've purchased the book, as well as used copies of Sundaram and Simon and Blume for reference. Any advice you would have as I go through these difficult classes? For reference, some relevant classes I've taken include Intermediate Micro, Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra (Proof-based), Mathematical Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Analysis I, and Topology (all As).

Hi fellow PhD applicants, I am applying to PhD Econ programs this year (all in Europe) if things go well, i will start next fall, and i am now contacting my professors (who i have not talk to for 2 years) to ask them to be my reference. I have been working at the IMF as an RA for 2 years but some schools insist that get only academic letters though IMF is really a research-oriented institution.... (while other schools are a bit more flexible as long as it can demonstrate my ability to do research and succeed in the program). So, if i am interested in Macro, is it ok to ask a professor who i took microeconometrics with to be my reference? or would it carry less weight? I already asked on Macro-professor, but the second professor that comes to my mind is this micro-professor because i did well in her class, and it's still "econometrics"... Happy to hear opinions :)

I have been out of school for 5 years. I am applying to programs this fall and have 2 of my 3 recommendation letters lined up from Professors from undergrad. They are recognized in their respective fields and will be providing good reviews (they have disclosed them to me). My question is, should I seek another professor for my 3rd recommendation? Or should this be a work reference? The work reference will provide a detailed recommendation of the quantitative work I've done in a Machine learning space, and applied statistics work (I work at a large software corporation). If I were to seek another professor recommendation, it would either be a math professor with whom I have taken only 2 classes recently in preparation for Ph.D applications. I could try to find a coworker in my space with a Ph.D, but that connection may be a bit more loose. Any/all opinions welcome. Much appreciated.

Hi urch,:dejected: I am going to get a reference letter from my thesis adviser, who is currently unemployed and probably will not be employed until next year. Is it ok to get a reference letter from him. As far as i understand i need to identify where he works and provide his email, which in general has to be an email from his institution (.edu or something). So is it ok to choose him if he is unemployed right now? Thank you in advance!

Hi, I'm planning to apply for admission to PhD programmes in finance and am having trouble finding appropriate people to provide me with references. The thing is that the schools need references from academics or people who are willing to vouch for my ability to succeed in academia. However, I last attended any sort of academic institution 10 years ago and my professors don't remember me and so are unable to provide a reference. Is there any way i can submit an application without a reference and expect to be taken seriously? Is there any other sort of reference i can provide that might help? thanks in advance, K.

Does anyone know if the LSE gives you any leeway with regard to nature of your references? They require two "academic" references (i.e. belonging to universities), but I unfortunately only have one real academic reference. My other references are professional and supervised me in RA work in research institutions. Not sure what I'm going to do if they won't accept one of the professional references, but maybe I'll have to give the department a call to find out... Thanks much in advance.
