  1. Hi there! I am currently finishing up my first round of application deadlines, and I was wondering what y’all think about some of the common requirements. 1) CV/Resume: How long is yours? How much detail do y’all go into? Do you include “unrelated” things like internships not in Econ/finance/data? 2) Statement of Purpose: How do you avoid simply rehashing things on your resume? What have y’all prioritized including? How much do you spend talking about your past (experiences, research, coursework) vs your future (why that program, what you want to focus your research on, career goals)? 3) Personal Statement: For schools requiring another statement, how are y’all using it? Are you using it to discuss something you didn’t have room for in your SOP, something personal about you (I.e. life-changing experience, “light bulb moment”, etc), or something else entirely? Obviously no need to answer all of the questions! I was just curious what your thoughts were about some things I’ve been thinking about throughout this process. Best of luck, everyone!

  3. I have both a CV and a resume. The resume is your typical resume with different sections for education, employment, extracurriculars, etc. but specifically includes 1-2 bullet points describing the activity. The CV, on the other hand, I followed the format that a lot of professors & graduate students use so it's more sleek. It contains similar sections (education, employment, conferences, etc.) but no bullet point, just the name of the institution, job title, and dates worked. Which one is appropriate to submit for PhD applications? Should I submit the resume if the application itself doesn't have sections about employment and conferences? Or does the CV look more professional and the admissions committee doesn't need that much more information?
  4. Most of the programs ask for a CV/Resume: Is the academic CV format (with research papers and their summary, and a tiny section of professional work experience) preferred over a Resume format (with professional experience and research experience in reverse-chronological order)? I have 2 years of work experience and some undergraduate research work. Does it hurt to submit a Resume (with my research experience and professional experience) without giving a summary/abstract of my unpublished papers and manuscripts? Thanks!
  5. Hi All, I am currently in first year of econ phd at a decent ranked US program. Considering the 5-6 years that lie ahead, I have decided to drop out of my program and join the industry. Skipping over the ethical arguments around this decision (I am firm about it), I want to ask you all a question and your advice on the same: when I apply for jobs, should I show in my resume that I am enrolled in a phd program ? I was hoping to state the facts and disclose this to my employers at the time of interview. Do not get me wrong, I do not intend to hide this fact but my only concern is, will employers shun my resume just by seeing a job application from a guy in his first year of PhD (which clearly means he is dropping out). So that is my confusion. I just need to get to the interview round somehow and obviously I want to avoid doing things that will disqualify me right off the bat. In addition to this phd, I have a master's in econ from a top 15 US school. I am international student. Thanks a lot!
  6. Hi Everyone, I have a quick question regarding Academic CV for applicants coming from engineering backgrounds. Should I include my engineering research experience and if yes, how much should I go in depth about the research work? In addition, I have completed military training during my undergraduate. What would be an appropriate section to mention this? Thanks in advance
  7. How important is it to mention undergrad rank in the resume? I have an approximate idea of my class rank (passed undergrad several years ago), however, I am not sure of the exact class rank. My undergrad transcript doesn't mention class rank. I know there shouldn't be any misinformation on resume. So, should I just mention grades and not the class rank on resume? Is it ok? Or should I write approximate class rank on resume, and that should be fine? Regards
  8. I'm gearing up to begin the application process during the summer, and I was wondering if I should be concerned about my grade in Calculus 3 (multivariate). I struggled generally that semester and ended up with a C+ in that class. I'm applying to schools as high ranked as U Michigan and LSE, and I wonder if they will see that C as a big drawback. I have an A in real analysis and am taking linear algebra and differential equations in the fall. My economics GPA is sparkling, at a top-75 US undergraduate school, and I have research experience and I will be writing a senior thesis. If I score high on the quantitative GRE, will that resume be solid even with the glaring C? Thank you for any advice and opinions.
