My Target Scores

Found 7 results

  1. I got acceptance in the quantitative methods causal inference and machine learning from Erasmus Rotterdam, quant marketing from HEC Paris and Bocconi. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts in which school is better? I want to get a placement in academics if possible after graduation.
  2. Hello, I am considering applying for PhD in the US this semester (for Fall 2019) but not really sure where I should be applying to and perhaps you would give me some advices. Undergraduate: Nanyang Technological University (Singapore-Second upper class honors) GPA: 4.28/5 Math courses: (In chronological order) Calculus I/II/III, Linear algebra I/II, Probability and intro to Stats ( all B+), Stats (Higher level) (A) Real analysis and numerical analysis ( both A-) regression analysis (A-) computational economics (A+) Basic optimization (A-) Times series (B+). I did pretty badly for the first year in Singapore as it took quite a while to adjust to the new environment and language barriers. Econs courses: Macro and Micro principles (both B), Intermediate Macro (A), Intermediate Micro (A-), international monetary economics (B), Principles of econometrics (A-) Mathematical Econs (A-) Intermediate Econometrics (A-) Quant Macro (A+) Industrial Org (A) Game theory (A-) Advanced Micro (B+) and Unfortunately I got B+ for the Final Year Project. Graduate: University of Maine Current GPA: 4.00/4 Econs courses: Macro, Micro, Econometrics, Adv topics in Economics: Time series (all A) Maths courses: Biological Modeling and Simulations (A) -- There are not many math courses that I could choose from as it is offered variedly. Expected Remaining courses: Functions of Real variables I, Adv graduate topics in Maths: Linear model, Adv topics in Economics: Econometrics, Independent Studies and either Functions of Real variables II, Topology or Stochastic Systems. All the mentioned degrees are funded by Singapore scholarship and Fulbright Program. I also earned other scholarships to study in Japan and Australia but declined the offers. Work experiences: None as it is restricted by the sponsors. Intended Schools: BU, Boston College, University of Maryland, UMinnesota, Carnegie Mellon, UCSD and a few of those very top tier: Stanford, Yale, Columbia, NYU Fields: Macro Economics, Income Disparity, Industrial organizations, Monetary Policies. LOR: Two letters from Prof. at UMaine (econs prof. graduted from Boston College and math prof. from Cornell and I assume these letters should be a very good one given their responses) and another one either from NTU or UMaine (uncertain but likely positive as I have only attended their classes) GRE scores: Verbal: 146, Quant: 167, AWA: 3.5. What I worry the most is that I did not have any work experiences as RA as well as no publications but rather papers from courses I have attended. The current degree is also non-thesis but as I am worried that I might not finish it on time (by May 2019) I would have to use my own fund until the thesis is done which is not feasible. I have relatively poor grades for undergrad math courses during the early years in undergrad and the verbal score is also way lower than what I have expected it to be. I will have to retake it but if this is what I have to submit, would there be any chance at all that I could get into those programs mentioned? and if there is any other programs that I would have higher chances. Thank you.
  3. Hi everyone, Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I searched around through past threads for a bit, and couldn't exactly find what I was looking for, which is some help in selecting schools I should apply to next year from the preliminary list I have at the moment, with a focus in IO. I've looked at a lot of rankings online but I feel like I've narrowed down my list as much as possible without others' input. I know that for IO, business school programs tend to have quite good faculty and groups (i.e. Booth, Wharton, etc.), but I'm focusing primarily on Economics programs at the moment. After a long time researching these programs, I came up with the following list of 24 schools I'd potentially be interested in applying to: Harvard MIT Berkeley Princeton Chicago Stanford NYU Columbia Yale Brown Boston U Northwestern UCLA U Wisconsin U Maryland U Minnesota UVA Johns Hopkins Vanderbilt Georgetown Penn State Duke U Washington Obviously, the list is ambitious both in sheer number of schools and in their respective rankings. I'm trying to balance applying for the very best programs while also having some programs further down the rankings that I also feel are good schools and I would be comfortable attending (hence why my list is so long at the moment). Without my profile I know it can be difficult to make an assessment as to what schools make sense for me to apply to, so let's just say I feel confident enough that I'm competitive for programs in the top 10 (so I'm not being 100% delusional in being interested in almost all the top 10), such that I feel there's a decent probability I get into at least one of them. I also figured grad school apps is the one moment I shouldn't be too stingy, so money isn't itself that much of a problem and I'd rather give it a shot at a good number of the top programs. Having said that, based on my interest in IO, are there any schools from the list above that I should definitely not remove from my list, as I try to cull down my list to 15-20 schools? Are there any that you feel I should be comfortable removing? For example, I think Northwestern's particularly strong in IO, and I've heard good things about Wisconsin in that respect as well. Minnesota, on the other hand, is more of a macro environment. Are there any schools I may be overlooking? Thanks for any help!
  4. PROFILE: brwar Type of Undergrad: USNEWS Top 20 school and top 20 Econ department Undergrad GPA:3.95 (including grad courses) Type of Grad: Joint BS&MA (a kind of honor program) Grad GPA: N/A GRE: V162 Q169 W4.5 Math Courses: Calculus 1,2(A,A); Multivariable Calculus 1,2(A,A); Linear Algebra Applications(A); Differential Equations(A); Discrete Mathematics(A+); Linear Algebra Proof(A+); Analysis 1,2(A,A); Probability Theory(A+). All just undergrad levels. Econ Courses: (undergrad) Intro Micro (A+); Intro Macro(A); Intermediate Micro (A+); Intermediate Macro (A+); Intro Econometrics (A); Intermediate Econometrics (B); International Trade Theory (A+); Market Design (A); (grad) (first-year PhD level) Math Camp (P) (P\NP only); Micro 1 (A); Micro 2 (A+). Other Courses: Math Stats (A), Linear Models (A). Optimization (A). (All 3 are Statistics courses.) Intro to Programming(A). Letters of Recommendation: 1. PhD Micro 2 professor. Full professor with many seminal works in IO/Auction/Micro Theory. I was his best student in that class, and he said he'll write an extremely strong letter. 2. PhD Micro 1 professor. Full professor with many works in Micro Theory. I was ranked Top5 in his midterm and ended with an A in his class. Should be good/strong. 3. Independent research supervisor. Young AP in Micro Theory. Should be strong. (Two of the three letter writers are MIT PhD's.) Research Experience: Independent research in mechanism design. We were trying to write a co-authered paper. But just when I finished all the proofs myself, I found two published papers already covered about two thirds of our topics. So it's impossible to get it published now:( My supervisor said he's gonna explain it in his letter. But I'm still worried about it since I have no other research experience. Teaching Experience: N/A (not allowed for undergrad students.) Research Interests: Applied Micro or Econometrics. SOP: Not started yet. Other: I passed the first-year PhD Micro preliminary exam with a PhD pass in the first try. Concerns: I'm pretty concerned about my research experience because of this accident. Also, I'm kind of worried about the B in Intermediate Econometrics, but I was having a flu and couldn't read anything. How should I explain these two things in my SOP? or should I explain them? Any advice welcome! Thx!
