About Me

My Target Scores

  1. I have a few offers at this point, and I am having a hard time evaluating my options. Feedback and opinions from other applicants and graduate students will help me make an educated choice, so please let me know what you think my best course of action would be. Any information about the programs below, regarding placements, learning environment, interaction with faculty, funding, etc. is very welcome. I think current graduate students will be able to offer a lot of insight. I am mainly interested in microeconomic theory, specifically applications of game theory to economics. I am not going to go into more detail here. Admissions: 1. Autonomous University of Barcelona (IDEA program, will have to pay tuition, awarded a stipend for the first year) 2. Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Economics program, no tuition waiver) 3. Pennsylvania State University (Ph.D., waitlisted for funding) 4. Stockholm School of Economics (Ph.D., full funding) Pending: 1. Tilburg University 2. Bocconi University 3. Paris School of Economics (M1 track) 4. University of California- Santa Barbara 5. London School of Economics (EME program) On a peripheral note, there are deadlines to accept some of the offers I have. But all my results are not in yet. In such a scenario, what does an applicant usually do? Thank you.
  2. Test Scores (GRE) - 160+ (V/Q) [based on two unofficial tests and 1 month prep] Undegrad GPA: 3.67/4 Graduate GPA: N/A Research Experience: PG Diploma in Liberal Arts (The program has some research component) Teaching Experience: Peer Tutoring and Mentoring in UG Work Experience: 1.5 Years in Big 4 Advisory Concentration Applying to: Supply Chain/Operations Number of programs planned to apply to: 9 Dream Schools: MIT,USC, U of Toronto Other Questions: I am not sure if I should first pursue a MSc in Sustainability/Business with a research focus to improve my chances to get into a good program What made you want to pursue a PhD? I want to pursue a career in academic research specifically in circular supply chains. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? Assuming I have good/great letters and a solid research proposal What would be a good path for me to make a competitive profile for the following programs – Cornell University (Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (incl. Dyson)) Duke University (The Fuqua School of Business) Harvard University (Harvard Business School) Indiana University at Bloomington (Kelley School of Business) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (Sloan School of Management) Northwestern University (Kellogg School of Management) University of California at Los Angeles (Anderson School of Management) University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Ross School of Business) University of Minnesota at Twin Cities (Carlson School of Management) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler Business School) University of Southern California (Marshall School of Business (incl. Leventhal)) University of Toronto (Joseph L. Rotman School of Management) Thank You
  3. Hi, Im looking to apply to an Accounting PhD program at some point in the next 1.5 years-ish but Im super nervous about my low GPA. We dont really do GPA's on a 4.0 scale at my school but I beleive that my percentage mark translates to a 3.2 for my undergrad and a 3.3 for my MAcc Outside of that, I have worked with profs in my undergrad to help them with their research and got one paper published during my MAcc and I think I can at least 2/3 really good LOC from profs i worked with. I took a practice GMAT a few days ago and got a 650 on my first try, so i assume I can do better with some studying, and I do not have any math outside of an intro to calc and an intro to stats classes, but im hoping that doesent matter to much because im more interested in experimental/behavioral research rather than archival. Any thoughts of my chances of getting into a program? I dont really have a specific school I am targeting, I just want to go somewhere that offers behavioral/experimental research as an option and am really looking to go to any school that would accept me. I am also expecting to have 2ish years of experience working in investment banking and a CPA .
  4. The number of students who attend a school could be divided among 10, 12, or 16 buses, such that each bus transports an equal number of students. What is the minimum number of students that could attend the school? (A) 120 (B) 160 © 240 (D) 320 (E) 480 hello, I am unable to find the answer to this with the formula lcm = P*Q/GCF. Can someone tell why?
  5. So I am finishing my first year at a PhD program. I chose this school largely to work with a particular professor who is leaving to work at the Fed at the end of this school year. I am interested also in poverty which no one at my school does. I was interviewed and waitlisted at my favorite program, and have wished I applied to several others focussed on policy and poverty. Is it worth considering moving programs and if so, how would I go about this?
  6. Decision day is a little bit over a month away. Unfortunately, I did not get into my top choice so the decision about where to attend is not a clear-cut one. Thus, I'm seeking advice. What do you think are important factors, general or specific, to consider when choosing the school you want to attend? What should I ask during Virtual Visit Days and meetings with faculty? Do you recommend I speak to anyone besides the faculty? As an undergrad, I might overestimate/underestimate the importance of certain factors or entirely missing them, so I would love to hear others' thoughts and personal experiences about what they think is relevant. Many thanks!
  7. Hi all, I want some opinions on getting MS in Statistics before applying to Econ PhDs. My plan is to pursue MS in Statistics, specifically either a "MS in Applied Statistics/Data Science in Finance" or just "MS in Applied Statistics." I do have an option to pursue "MS in Mathematical Statistics," but I was told that almost no one studies this here at my school (yeah people want to get jobs after this program). I am not considering the MS in Economics here at my school because we only have online version of it. Also, our Stat department is stronger than Econ (T20s vs T50s). So, given that I have an undergrad profile that makes me a quite strong candidate in T30~40s (like top GPA in Econ, Math&Stat minor, top GRE, etc.), by how much do you think my chances will improve in getting into higher Econ PhD programs by getting an MS from one of those programs? Of course, given that I do well (like >3.8/4.0) and do some research with Econ professors on the side. Also, which of the two~three options should I choose? Just to further elaborate on my choice of MS program, I do not want to spend a fortune in other MS programs in Europe or Private Top universities, and I have a strong shot of getting a funding here.
  8. Hello pharmacists! I am a high school student in AP research. This class requires me to do a survey. The survey that I am doing is how pharmacists feel about direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising. This survey is completely anonymous, and is targeted towards community pharmacists in the United States and New Zealand. I'd really appreciate it if you could fill out this survey. Thank you! Pharmacists' attitudes about direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising
  9. So this may be an odd question, but I figure I may as well go for it. So I am currently in a PhD program at a 50-70 school (I was waitlisted at two Top 40-50 schools, but didn't get in). I am wondering if it is realistic to get into a PhD program for business, public policy, statistics, or applied math upon the completion of my current Econ PhD program in order to get a job at a research school? How likely to a Top ~20 program accept someone with a Econ PhD (especially for business or policy)? Or would I be better off doing a postdoc instead?
  10. Hey all, I am currently a junior at a moderate level United States research school. I am studying math with a minor in economics, will have far more classes than required but am avoiding the business school pre-reqs of a double major. I am trying to start formulating a plan for how to boost my application to graduate school or pre grad school programs next fall. Here are my current school stats and relevant experience. GPA: 4.0 (80 credit hours) Relevant Courses: econometrics, intermediate micro/macro (planned), law and economics, natural resource economics. Calc 1-3, Intro diff eq, Linear Algebra, probability, stats (planned), advanced cal(planned). Relevant research experience: Working paper on terrorism that I will be a co-author on. Started undergraduate research on energy regulations in the US. From this and my classes, I already have rec letter writers. Relevant job experience: Currently interning in a think tank out of DC where I am working on terrorism, energy, and carbon tariffs. Programming: R, Stata, Python, SAS (somewhat) GRE: I plan to take the GRE next spring and additionally next summer, shooting for a 165 quant or higher. I am currently accepted into the math masters fast track, but we do not have an applied track, so I would prefer to drop this and focus on economics sooner, but do not know how that will hurt my applications? I am wanting to go to graduate school somewhere that has energy and environmental economics as a top option, with preferably some decent connections in the public policy, government sector. Any advice on schools I should be looking at or things to do to boost my application are greatly appreciated.

  12. Hi everyone. I am applying to finance PhD (2021 intake). I would appreciate if you could advice on my profile. Thanks so much in advance! Applying to: PhD in Finance (Research interests: credit risk, intangible asset on corporate finance decisions) Test Score (GMAT): V38, Q50, AWA 4 , Total 730 96% Undergraduate: reputable school in China; Bachelor in Economics; Poor overall GPA: 3.00/4.00, but did good on relevant courses - Calculus and Linear Algebra etc. Graduate: Top school in Hong Kong; MSc in Finance; GPA: 3.83/4.00 References: Two professors from the grad school. They have not supervised me but I did great on their courses. Work Experience: 5 years banking experience in China (prior to the master's program). 2 years as a general investment analyst in Hong Kong. Qualifications: CFA Research Experience: - Master thesis in green bond, not published. Teaching Experience: none Questions or Concerns: - Should I just forget about the top 50 schools (or even top 100), given the low undergrad GPA? - Will the CFA help in any way in the admission process? - Also a bit worried about age, as I'm already 30 yo. - I'm also targeting programs in Canada. Are they less competitive than US ones? Thanks in advance!
  13. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top in Asia (US news top 100 globally), no grad Cumulative GPA: 4.2/4.3 GRE: 170Q/164V/4AWA. Bad AWA score but I don't think I have time to retake. GRE Math: 970/98% Math Courses: PhD-level: Analysis I (A, taken at a top US school), Undergrad-level: Calculus (A+), Analysis I&II (A+), Functional Analysis (A+), Linear Algebra (A+), Abstract Algebra (A+), Ordinary Diff Eqns (A+), Optimization (A+), Probability (A+) Econ Courses: PhD-level: Micro I&II (A+, A), Econometrics I&II (A+, A), Topics in Theoretical Econ (A, taken at a top US school) Letters of Recommendation: 1) Econ Prof in top US b-school with 1.5 year RA work. Will be a strong letter based on our interactions. 2) AP in top US b-school with several months of RA work. Should be a strong letter. 3) Econ Prof in top US school. Will be a very strong letter. We coauthored a paper (not yet published but working towards that) Research Experience: 1 year in undergrad, 1.5 years full time after graduation Teaching Experience: None Programming skills: Stata Python R SQL Matlab Other: Some things to consider: 1. Plan to do micro (leaning towards theory) 2. I'll try top10 but given the covid situation, not sure about my chance.
  14. Type of Undergrad: 10-25 in Econ, large state school Undergrad GPA: 3.25 Econ Type of Grad: 25-50 in US Econ, large state school Grad GPA: 3.1 MA Economics (school does not offer terminal master’s) GRE: Q 162, VE 167 Math Courses: Deriv. Calc. ©, Integral Calc. (A-), Multivar. Calc. (B), Linear Algebra (A-), Diff. Eqns. (A), Proofs (A) Econ Courses: Grad: 1st year econ PhD in micro/macro/metrics, pretty much straight B’s UG (upper division): Micro seq. (C, B, A), Metrics seq. (B-, B, A), Macro seq. (B+, B+), Game Theory (A), Decisions Under Uncertainty (A), Marketing (A), Globalization (A), Advanced Topics Game Theory (A+), Experimental (A+), Operations Research (B+, B), Finance (B, B) Letters of Recommendation: Three econ professors (A, B, C) from UG institution, all active researchers, two with name recognition in subfield, all have worked with me on research within the last year. Said they’d be happy to write me letters, so I assume strong. Research Experience: Spent most of the last year working as an RA for Profs. A & B. Have begun working on own research project under supervision of Prof. C. Project is beyond proposal stage, but not yet to data collection/analysis stage. Teaching Experience: Have only tutored. Record of education-related volunteer work. Research Interests: Experimental/behavioral, labor (esp. technology and changing landscape of work, and educ/labor intersection), knowledge/information SOP: Dry and factual, includes what kind of research Q’s I’m interested in, and my research experience. Applying to (econ PhD unless noted): University of Zurich, Tinbergen (Mphil to PhD), University of Nottingham, University of Copenhagen, LMU Munich, Stockholm School of Economics, NHH Norwegian School of Economics Other: Was in econ PhD for 2018/2019 year, could not continue because did not PhD pass prelims. Reasons I failed: not in the right place mentally, could have been better prepared. More of the former than the latter. After requisite soul-searching, decided I still want to do a PhD in econ, as I really enjoy research/working on my own projects/tackling questions without clear answers. I spent most of the 2019-2020 school year working as an RA at my undergrad institution. Also took a math class (proofs), audited an econ grad course, and have been reviewing econ foundations. I have heard a lot of conflicting things about applying after failing out of another PhD, ranging from it hardly matters to it will be impossible to get into a decent school with funding. Here are my questions. How does failing out of PhD affect my chances at getting into another? I have heard it will be harder, although I am de facto better prepared this time. How do I explain this in applications, particularly ones where it does not ask? Should it go into SOP? I absolutely want to be upfront about it. Is it better to have at least one letter be from a prof. at my grad school? I could, I left on good terms, but I did not exactly impress anyone academically. At best, they could say that I am capable of learning the material. It would be a much weaker letter. I know very little about admissions process in Europe, how do I look as a candidate over there? Advice on particular schools (any to drop or add)? Will re-taking the GRE make much of a difference? I’ve heard that below 165 does not get considered, but I am skeptical that it will make much of a difference. I’m quite reluctant to re-take, as I would have to put a significant amount of time into studying, time that could be better spent doing research or learning math/econ that will actually help during first year, instead of just getting really fast at high school geometry.
  15. Hello, I am working as a Marketing Manager in a software firm and am a temporary faculty in a business school in France. To get a permanent academic position at this school, I need to be enrolled in a PhD program and complete it eventually. I want to continue with my job for now and due to my work commitment, I can’t do a full time PhD. Are there any accredited universities that allow enrolment in a PhD program and complete the degree without the requirement of regular full-time coursework and that would allow me to choose a guide and work on my thesis remotely with him. Any advice would be helpful.
  16. Hello Friends, Please let me know what points I have to consider while preparing my SOP for graduate school. Thanks
  17. Hello all, I am currently finishing up a four year BA/MA program at a top CUNY school (but unknown nationally). PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA/MA degrees in Economics and Math Minor Undergrad GPA: 3.78 Type of Grad: MA degree (1 year) Grad GPA: 3.84 GRE: 169 Q 165 V Math Courses(list the grades for each course): Multivariable Calc (A), Linear Algebra (P - covid), Intro to Proofs (A+), Matrix Algebra (A), Real Analysis (A) Econ Courses Undergrad(list the grades for each course): Micro A, Macro A, Trade A, Urban A, Metrics B+, Environmental A, IO A Econ Courses Msc(list the grades for each course): Micro A-, Macro A-, Metrics 1 A, Metrics 2 A, Development A-, Transition A, Microeconometrics IP, Advanced Concepts in Finance IP, Inequality IP, Thesis IP Other Courses: Letters of Recommendation: 1 Strong from dept. chair who I took a graduate independent study course with, 1 strong from graduate metrics prof/thesis advisor who has seen me do research, 1 very strong from a professor whom I've been co-authoring a paper with Research Experience: Summer volunteer research gig that turned into a short term consultancy with the world bank and an opportunity to work on and coauthor a development/human capital paper. Lots of STATA work on this project. Other than that, a couple of term papers in various grad courses. Teaching Experience: Tutoring for economics department Other (Notes, concerns etc.): I'm looking at programs both in the North America and in Europe, particularly: Berkeley ARE, UVA, Boston U, Georgetown, UT Austin, Washington, Brown, USC, UCSB, Wisco, Vanderbilt, UBC, UChicago Harris, Stanfrod GSB Political Econ, Stockholm School of Econ, Bonn MSc Res, Berlin School of Econ, LMU Munich, PSE M2, Toulouse M2, Bocconi PhD, Tinbergen. Any thoughts on my competitiveness for these programs would be greatly appreciated!
  18. Hey guys. I will be applying to PhD programs this year for the fall 2021 year. I will graduate with a economics major and math minor. Here's my profile: Undergrad: 3.65 GPA from large state school. Grad course: Grad level Public finance econ course and issues in american economic history which included a research paper. GRE: 166 Quant Research: Not really much to be honest. Multiple classes that involved research projects but no RA experience. LOR: I can get three that will be good from economic professors at my school. Two should be very good, but it isn't an incredible economics department so they won't be from the types of professors who teach at harvard obviously. econ courses: econometrics, intermediate micro and macro, labor, plus some others. all A's math courses: Calc 1-4, linear algebra, differential equations, and real analysis. A's in all except a B in real analysis. I know I am not going to Harvard or Yale or that type of school, but what type of schools do you think I could fit at. I will also apply to RA jobs so I could do that for a couple years and then go to PhD. Be honest with me. Thanks Edited to add that I have knowledge of stata. Primarily taught myself but also used some in classes.
  19. I was wondering if anyone (especially econ professors) have any idea how COVID-19 may impact the number of accepted students being able to actually attend next fall? If international students cannot attend (e.g. are not able to come into the US next year) is there a chance a school may reach out to formerly waitlisted students? Is it worth me reaching out to such a school (I was rejected off the waitlist for my favorite)? Also, what are the odds that we would have to do online learning this fall? Thanks again for all the advice!
  20. Does the stress level of students in Accounting PhD programs vary much by school? Are lower ranked programs less stressful? Do some programs have a less/more pressurized culture? Any schools in particular? Thanks for your input.
  21. Okay, I've posted a few times on here before on different parts of this issue, but I would just like to gather any opinions on the whole thing. I narrowed my consideration between 2 Ph.D. programs, say Iowa State and Mizzou (I accepted Mizzou). I want to study macro and want to get a job in academia doing at least some research. I found the Mizzou (program and professors) usually ranks higher than Iowa State on macro (according to RePEc), but Iowa State usually ranks higher otherwise and has a better track record at getting students into academic positions. I also chose Mizzou so that I can maintain personal relationships better (family and friends are within 2 hours from Mizzou - and I have problems with seizures) and because the department at Mizzou also seems very eager to have me join their program (I have had more than one professor reach out to me and have been offered a fellowship). Based on this, I'm guessing I would be given more opportunities at Mizzou. I am wondering if you guys think I made the right choice (if not, is it worth reaching out to Iowa State to see if I can still get in)? Also, what do you think are my odds at getting an academic position (ideally research) and how do you recommend I do to maximize my chances? Iowa State: US News and World Report (53), RePEc - Department Rating (93), RePEc - Macro (243) Mizzou: US News and World Report (63), RePEc - Department Rating (118), RePEc - Macro (110)
