Dear friends, i am an MS aspirant and want to do my masters in Software engineering.I shortlisted a few universities for my course.I came across Carnegie Mellon University Application requirements website and i was shocked to see that they admit students on minimum of 290 score(more information can be found at Application Components for Software Engineering-Silicon Valley Campus - Carnegie Mellon University) my GRE score is 321.As far as i have learned CMU is best in the field of computer's considering the researches and the placements they offer. so as a result I am bit confused, would it be wise to take admission in CMU?? Thanks all for your time

I've been admitted to both CMU's professional MSE and GaTech's MSCS programs. I know CMU is the best around in CS, as well as in Software Engineering. I'm not sure if the CMU degree (since it's a professional degree and less selective) is worth taking over a degree in Computer Science from GaTech (which is very respectable at #10 nationally). The CMU degree will cost nearly twice as much as the GaTech degree (about $25k-30k more), and since professional MS degrees don't seem to be respected as much I'm not sure if CMU is worth that difference. I have enough money saved up that I would only need a small loan for CMU, but that's still a lot of money. I'd like to study software engineering since it seems it's very useful to industry, which is what i'm interested in. Is CMU's MSE program worth it in terms of job prospects over an MS CS degree from Georgia Tech?

Hi, I am an MS student - international student- (will finish in Dec 2011) applying for the Fall 2012 Admissions to PhD programs in CS and SE. I had applied for Fall 2011 as well but got rejected from all but 1 schools. I am applying again this time, Any advice for me? Should I refrain from applying again to the places that I had applied before or should I make sure to apply there again? One of the places that I had applied to was CMU and had made it to the waitlist however couldn't clear that. Would applying again make a difference? Changes in my profile since last time .. 1. Added 1 journal paper (journal ranked around 15 in the area) and 1 editorial in a journal - Both co-authored. 2. annual excellence award from the college of engineering - given to one student from the UG and Grad student body in engineering every year. Fellow second timers, nth timers and others .. Please let me know the dos and don'ts for a second time applicant like me, if you have any inputs regarding that. Thanks.

Hello. I graduated from University of North Carolina Wilmington with a B.S. in Finance 2 years ago (GPA 3.5). Since then I have been traveling abroad and recently returned to the states. Now that I am back I would like to pursue a career in Software Engineering (i want to write code) and am not sure the best way to go about doing so. Of course I should have done a CS B.S. but I did not. I have had 3 years of object oriented programming in High school and currently enjoy programming for myself. I originally thought to get a 2nd B.S. in computer science, but after exploring this deeper it turned out that most departments recommended applying for a M.S. in Software Engineering/Comp Sci. I am currently in no debt and am able to go back to school full time. My questions are: 1. What is the best route for me to take to pursue a software engineering career? 2. I know I will have to take Calc II, data structures, Object Oriented Language class, and something similar. Is it possible to get into a top program with the right GRE score and good prereqs grades? 3. Would job prospects be available from a non-top Master's Program or would those programs not be worth it? Thanks!
