My Target Scores

Found 16 results

  1. I was formally accepted to a PhD program I am really excited about. In my SOP I stated that I would be taking some “proof-based courses this spring”, but I’d like to drop them. I didn’t mention it on a course list or anywhere else, let alone what courses they are — just one sentence in my SOP. Do you think I could drop the courses? Do you think they’ll be checking?
  2. Hi everyone! I am applying this year intake for PhD Economics. In my SOP I have cited a couple of paper as my inspiration/motivation; shall I make a reference list at the end of my SOP? or I skip it since it increases number of pages ? Thank you
  3. Hi everyone! I am applying this year intake for PhD Economics. In my SOP I have cited a couple of paper as my inspiration/motivation; shall I make a reference list at the end of my SOP? or I skip it since it increases number of pages ? Thank you !
  4. Hi all! I'm applying to econ phd this cycle and here's a question I have regarding sop: Should I mention faculty members that I want to work with in sop? It seems people do this all the time but My professor told me this usually wouldn't do much good as anyone can just google for 5 min and drop down some names GS Lab RA manual also recommend against this (PhD Application * gslab-econ/ra-manual Wiki * GitHub)
  5. Hey all, I am applying this year and I have a background that my professors told me is very likely to be placed at Top5, so that's where I am going to try. I am really struggling to write the SoP. Could anyone guide me, show me a perhaps successful examplory sop that I could at least use to guide me?
  6. Hello Friends, Please let me know what points I have to consider while preparing my SOP for graduate school. Thanks
  7. I think when schools ask for PS or SOP alone, it can almost be about the same thing. However, when a school ask for both PS and SOP, how are they different? I wonder what should I write in each of them. Thanks a lot fellas!
  8. Hi guys, I am finishing up my SOP for all my applications. Originally, my plan was to mention one professor at each program in my SOP. At some schools, there were actually at least one professor whose research is very aligning with my future interests. In that case, I obviously mentioned their names and their works. However, at other schools, there are professors who definitely seem to be capable of advising me but not researching the very specific topic that I plan on researching. Obviously, my research interest might change over time so I don't want to just cut out those schools that do not have professors who are researching in that very specific topic. But as I am writing, I realized that it doesn't really make sense to mention their names if their work is not specifically aligning with my future interests that I mention in SOP. What do you guys think? Should I just talk about my future interests and end it there?
  9. Really lost as to how to outline my SOP. How much should I talk about courses, research, etc. if they're already on my CV? How much of a "personal story," if at all, should I be telling? Name dropping specific faculty I'd like to work with?
  10. Hi. A short question. Is it a good idea to describe what was taught in courses(especially math) you took in your SOP? Here we say "introduction to analysis" instead of "real analysis" and "real analysis" instead of "measure theory" Also I have some seminar courses that do not say what were their topic. So, all in all, is it a good strategy to describe the courses? Thank you:)
  11. My first go at academic studies was over ten years ago, and was a total disaster. I failed courses and left after a year. It took me more than 5 years to return and complete my degree in a different discipline. My second try was considerably better. Graduated summa cum laude. I directly continued to a master, which I graduated with honors as well. My questions: 1. Do I need to provide the transcripts from the first go, even though the grades had no bearing on my complete degree(s)? 2. If I do, and I can address this in my SOP (I was very ill as a teen and hardly went to school which culminated in me dropping out, having un-diagnosed learning disabilities (at the time), no learning habits..), will it be held against me? 3. If I need to address this in my SOP, how to do so without it coming across as whining? My grandfather always said - if you need to make an excuse, make one, not many, or else it just sounds like you're making excuses. Thanks!
  12. Hi all, I find this fantastic material about writing the statement of purpose. It is from Berkeley Graduate Division. Please find the content in the following link. Writing the Statement of Purpose | Berkeley Graduate Division
  13. HI everyone, This is my first time posting here. Kind of nervous about your replies...and not sure if this kind of post should be presented here. If not, please tell me where to post this. I am applying for Econ PhD and currently revising my SOP for the second version. The previous version was reviewed and it turned out that the first paragraph didn't show my strong intention in studying PhD. And after that I have read some examples. However, I don't know how should I revise it. For example, should i started with an impressive story somewhat relevant to my field of interest (i.e. Applied Economics)? Or, should I simply start with my current job as a RA and the projects I am working on with my professors? (I am not enrolled in any grad school now, just graduated from college, but I manage to get in the research center and now prospecting a paper and several other projects regarding to empirical studies.) It is hard to get the first paragraph right. I need some help please! Thank you:)
  14. Hi guys, I have a question about the length of SOP. Although most programs has a limit of 1000 words or 2 pages, UCSD's maximum is 2500. Then isn't it too short if my SOP is only 900-1000? But I cannot imagine a 2000 one with around 4 pages... What if the committee members did not know the maximum is 2500 and got bored when came across such a long one? Thank you so much
  15. Basically my question is if a 1000 word SOP is too long if the University doesn not state a maximum number of words nor a minumum number of words. Which University would it be OK? What should I delete/add? (a) academic background (b) research experience © worl/research experience (d) thesis (topic) (e) why a PhD (f) Why there Thanks!
  16. I know that longer SOPs are not better but just longer. However I was wondering: How long-short are SOP's expected to be? :encouragement:
