  1. Hello Urch! I'm gearing up to apply to PhD programs and was wondering if anyone could share which list is best for program rankings? Texas A&M's, UTD, or another? Or if you have input on the reputation of the following programs for management/OB, that would be valuable as well: Arizona State CMU Tepper Duke Fuqua Michigan State USC Marshall University of Wisconsin All have good POIs, just curious what the reputations of these programs are in the community more broadly.
  2. Hello, In short, I would like to know what kind of mathematical background is required for a PhD in Finance. I have seen various programs state linear and/or matrix algebra, Integral and Differential Calculus, Stats and Probability. My undergraduate degree is in History and I have an MBA (AACSB accredited). My math was through Calculus, but it was quite sometime ago. Both my Calc and Stats requirements for undergrad were completed via AP courses in high school. Although I majored in History, it was because I loved the subject at the time and not because I was ‘escaping’ quantitative work. I realize that I will need to increase my quantitative skills before applying to a competitive program. My employer will pay for university courses at $8,000 per year (no clawback clause for leaving employment). I have three options I am considering: 1. Go for a MSF or MS in Econ online. My current life situation does not permit to move out of state or pay for an expensive program. My state is fairly rural, but I live in a metro of 1 million. The local universities do not have competitive programs. I have eyed the MSFE (Finance and Economics, not Financial Economics) at West Texas A&M (AACSB). The program alluded to focusing on certain courses for PhD admissions. Also, there is a Masters in Economics at Missouri which has the same content as the on campus option. The department has a listing of master’s graduates who have gone on to PhD program (almost all in economics). Both have econometrics intro courses and the main core of economics. However, there appears to be no room for additional work in higher math courses. There is an MS in Applied Stats at Kansas, but it appears to be very new, based out of the medical school and somewhere between an applied stats and data science program. 2. Go for an online second bachelor’s in mathematics. The two programs I think would be the most competitive are at Indiana University and Thomas Edison State University. TESU has an elective in Matrix algebra. Would a second bachelor’s in math be overkill? Additionally, my local universities are mostly geared towards secondary school math education or are completely in-person daytime classes. 3. Just do self study on EdX and Coursera. Possibly pay for the EdX certificates for some social ‘proof’. Self explanatory. I have not read anything contradictory, but I sense that this would not be what PhD admissions would be looking for. What are your opinions?
  3. Iowa State or Missouri??? I have funding at both.
  4. Hi, I made an error while applying for Texas State Pharmacy License. I applied for Licensure by Reciprocity instead of Licensure by Examination. Thus I paid $255 instead of $103. Can I get the refund?
  5. Hi All I am a registered pharmacist in Tennessee. But I do not practice there. I hold another state license where I am practicing. I want suggestion do I have to keep my base state -Tennessee license active ? So if want to reciprocate my license to some other state in future I can do that. Please suggest. Thank you
  6. Hi folks, I am recently admitted to the PhD program in Management at Louisianna State U. Will it be worth attending it? Most of its graduates ended up going to teaching schools. Should I reapply after I complete the master program so that I can be more competitive and get into better schools like u of maryland? I applied without a master degree and am admitted to the master program of public administration of State University of New York. The curriculum of this program has a few quant related courses. Would that help with PhD applications? Also, my GMAT score is a bit over 700. Would that be good enough if I want to apply to 2nd tier schools like maryland/umn? If not, how much should I have on GRE? (I am not gonna retake GMAT) Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate your kind help!
  7. I am applying for mgt Ph.D. in penn state. They offered the code 2660 which does not match any school. GMAC said there should be a 7-digit code. I have asked Penn state from email but they did not reply. Anyone applying to Penn state as well? Thanks a lot!
  8. A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree and disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. in developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. I strongly agree with the given recommendation because it will provide an uniform education to all students of the nation and it can be said that it wiil be fair with all students whether they belong to urban area and rural area of the nation. but sometimes many educators want that it must be different curriculum for all the states of the nation because students also get the knowledge of their religion and their state and if whole curriculum for the country is same they will not be able to learn about their religion and their state. i believe there can be one solution that there must be at least one subject which is elective for students and which deals with the religion and the state from which a particular student belongs. in 2010 NCERT applies same course for all states in India, but after one year they realise that there must be a subject for students which will provide them the knowledge of their state and their city so NCERT ordered states to apply a new book in their curriculum so students get the knowledge of their state. there is also one more thing can come that if a student shifts from one state to another state he can learn about that state easily if he read the book related to that state in which he is shifted. In India thear are 29 states and each state has different language. so i believe state Government should add State language subject in the curriculum of that state because it will help to save the state language and also prepare students to speak state language with old people of the state.

The ranking is good for later applicants who want to increase the chance of admission by sending applications from group A to B. The competitiveness is equally measured by GMAT, GPA, undergrad university. 70% The rigor of curriculum is measured by level of Quantitative(Econ, Math) and Psychology, Sociology. 30% I tried to take into account the strength of 3 track in Marketing: Strategy, Modelling, and Consumer Behavior which varies by schools. Therefore, Between the neighbor group like A+, A or A- etc, there are overlapping elements like Toronto may be in A+ for Quant and Strategy, but can be A for consumer. The same for Duke, CMU, Michigan... Some programs are very picky and admit only one student per year. Grouping is not 100% correctly, some overlapping schools between groups exists. My Ranking criteria are based on the difficulty on admission ( competitiveness) and the rigor of curriculum. Quant only is the program that does not have Consumer Behavior track. If the schools are in the same group, they are nearly equal in term of reputation, admission rate, rigor of curriculum, and placement. The schools in the A+ group are more likely to hire the students from other schools within group, sometimes hire from group A, hardly or never from group A- or B and so on. Group A hires from A+, within A, sometime A- , hardly B+( depend on student ability and advisor reputation) If the programs are within the same group, it very hard to say which one is better than other. The choices of school within group are often based on research interest, adviser reputation. Thus, the variance within group is small, but variance between groups is higher. In group A+ and A: Degree Requirement for Quant-Track: Series of graduate Micreconomics and Econometrics in ECON dept, Marketing Seminars, 3-6 courses in Statistics Dept. Therefore, the schools tend to admit the students who have strong quantitative background similar to students in ECON Dept in the same school. The qualifying exam is very rigorous. Degree Requirement for CB-Track: Series of Psychology courses or Sociology, Marketing Seminars, 3-6 courses in Statistics Dept. In group A- and below: Degree Requirement is less rigorous: Marketing seminars, ECON and Statistics are elective. Some exceptional programs such as Houston, Texas Dallas, Georgia State, Temple, South Carolina are on the up trend of research activities, they have many influential professors in Marketing field. Therefore, some years, we can see the placement on A school, but again it depends much on student performance in the program and adviser reputation. If you have many offers, you can use following criteria to make a wise decision: 1.Look at the curriculum of each program. 2.Know the content of course work, and who will teach the class. 3.Who will be the mentor for your research, the most important thing. 4. Know the research activity of professors in the program. 5. Location 6. Stipend 7. Marketing research Center and research facillity 8. Opinion from current students. 9. Placement records 10. Your plan after graduation: teaching or research schools, or balanced ones 11. Assistantship duties: too many teaching duties may affect academic performance Please feel free to remind me programs that are not in the ranking, so that I can add up, OR you can consider the universities in the list Phd Programs in Marketing To be continued...
  10. General or specific impressions about those programs. Information from insiders would be appreciated. I have fully funded offers from all of them.
  11. Hi guys! I have a concern regarding the opportunity of GRA at Georgia State University (Robinson College) I am accepted to the Master of Science in Analytics program. However, I have no funding for my study yet. Does anybody have any insights regarding the possibility of getting a GRA for such a program? I have an MBA and worked as a research assistant during my master's program. Thanks a lot!!!
  12. I was accepted at Penn State (2800 p/month), UC Davis (2300 p/month), and UT Austin (1500 p/month) for the Ph.D. in Economics. I am interested in applied micro and development. What do you recommend? Thank you.
  13. Hey everyone - A quick shoutout to the regulars on this board. I have learned so much over the last 2 years from everyone and I just wanted to say a quick thanks! Background: I considered applying in the fall of 2017, but I received a job offer as a CFO of a really awesome company and decided to take it. I have no regrets as I have learned a great deal moving from public accounting to the private side, and definitely enjoy my job. However, I still have an itch to continue my education and am once again considering applying for a Accounting PHD program. Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): I have taken the GMAT practice test and received a 680. However it is due to a high V (42, 96% Percentile) and a low Q (40, 47% Percentile). One of my main questions is for the schools I am targeting (please see below) is this a disqualification. If so, if anyone has any clue of min. Quant score for these type of schools, please let me know! I plan to study for the next few months and take the exam in June.. leaving time for a retake in July or August. Undegrad GPA: 3.7 - State School Graduate GPA: 3.7 - Same State School Research Experience: None Teaching Experience: GA for two semesters and would fill in for professors, if that counts? Work Experience: Worked part - time for a local CPA firm for 3 years in college. Upon applying I will have worked for approx. 1 years as an audit associate at a large regional firm and 1 year as a CFO of a multi-state company with NI of approx. $2M. Concentration Applying to: Behavioral What made you want to pursue a PhD? As a GA I was exposed to the doctoral staff on faculty and truly enjoyed the way they went about there jobs and how much they cared for the students. I was able to fill in a few times when professors had to miss class and really enjoyed the teaching aspect. I was also the accounting tutor in college for all undergraduate students. I understand the research is the main goal of a PhD, and I am also excited about this, as I have never really been challenged in school and would love to push myself to the extreme. However, the true reason for wanting to become a Accounting Professor is having the ability to truly help others and build great relationships with staff and students. I know Letters of Rec. are important and I have already confirmed I can get up to 3 letters from Accounting professors. One of the three was just appointed to the State Board by the Governor if this is given any extra weight. I am not interested in going to a top tier school, it is probably not even possible, rather my main focus is staying in the Southeast due to family, etc. I have researched many different schools (Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia State, Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Emory, South Florida etc) and would just like my opinion on my chances.
  14. Hello all, I know that some masters programs are better than others if one's ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD. Some explicitly state that they are not to be used as a stepping stone for a PhD, but others, such as UT- Austin, state that they are a useful stepping stone. Could people provide examples of other masters programs that may be good for a student looking to up their mathematical and economic skills before applying for a PhD? Thank you!
  15. To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.// Here the author tries to link the important features of a society with its major cities. The cities, in most cases, being impotant centres for trade and businesses, education and ministry, the author's argument seems more or less valid. Here it has been implicitly assumed that the most important activities that shape the features of a society happen in cities. In general, in a state, cities have ample centres for business. Most of rich and powerful businessmen reside in cities. From cities, they control the trade of commodities in towns and rural areas. Cities are not only centres for business, lots of major administrative centres are located in cities. From these centres, instructions are given what policies are to be adopted, what measures are to be taken for improvement of society. The Chief Minister of a state resides in the capital city of the state in general, along with his officials. They work hard to think of policies for welfare of state, and their instructions are followed throughout the state. In general, cities are far more urbanised than villages. The average standard of living in a city is also better than that in rural areas, in general. Thus, if standards of living in major cities in a state start to decline, if financial conditions of people living in cities somehow get worsened, one can conclude that the society is not in a very good shape. However, people esiding in rural areas tend to follow tradition and culture, and preserve them. So, if one wants to study folk culture of a society, it will not be wise to concentrate on cities only, ignoring rural parts of the state. In order to study major features of a society, one should concentrate on the cities, but it may not be wise to study the cities only ignoring towns and villages.
