  1. Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. Throughout history children are being pressurized either by the parents or by the teachers to meet society’s standards of a successful career. Professions like doctors or engineers are enforced and encouraged on children more commonly growing up in Asian communities and this has led to a debate to fight for an individual’s right to free will of their own career. Nowadays may people including me believe that every individual has the right to follow their passion and no one has the ability to determine one’s success as success is based on hard work, dedication and of course some luck. Through the course of time no individual remains the same as with each step in life they are growing and learning different lessons in life and maturing each step along the way. If a student doesn’t do well in biology at school, there is no confirmation that he wouldn’t succeed pursuing a medical career. Not performing well at school could be due to a number of reasons – simply he is not working hard or maybe he couldn’t focus at school due to problems at home or maybe he was ill and couldn’t study enough, there are numerous reasons to why a student wouldn’t perform well but regardless to this, no one can predict the future of this student as it is possible for him to work hard later in medical school and be successful, therefore no educational institution has the right to dissuade students from taking a career path which they believe that the student would not succeed. Moreover, a student has the right to follow their passion and teachers should not come in the way of that. There are some careers like musicians, artists, actors or even writers who have less opportunities of success, as in this line of work only the best ones from a countless number people achieve greater success. Yet just because the chances of success is less or the job opportunities are low, one must never lose hope as there are countless examples of people who were struggling like J.K.Rowling who became the most famous author of the book Harry Potter which got rejected by publishers twelve times and Ed Sheeran who became a famous singer and musician even though he started off by playing on the streets. As well as, the definition of success varies for each individual, success can merely mean the person is happy in what they are achieving in life and not necessarily defined in becoming rich or famous. Ultimately schools should not persuade students to obtain different career paths rather let the students follow their passion in life. On the contrary, there are some people who believe that teachers, who invest a lot of time on students, know the strengths and weaknesses of a student and would be able to guide the student on a career path which suits him the most. They argue that with their knowledge and experience with the student, they have a better idea at what he will excel in the most and they also feel responsible to persuade a student towards success, as the number of students achieving success studying from this school increases so does the school’s reputation of good education. To conclude, I believe no one has the right stop an individual from following their passion as the definition of success varies for each individual and success cannot be predicted from before.
  2. While it is not entirely without merit to claim that the goals one sets for oneself are fundamental on the road to success, the goals themselves are in fact not the perfect measurement of true success. In my opinion, the goals we set for ourselves are far from enough for us to achieve true success, and therefore true success should not be primarily measured only in terms of the goals. Some might argue that an ambitious and practical goal can set a clear direction for us to prevent us from going astray. However, in order to become a truly successful person, a clear direction is not enough. In fact, a considerable number of other important qualities are required to achieve success in addition to the goals one sets for oneself. For example, if a person is not persistent in the pursuit of his goals, the goals he sets for himself would only remain as mere imagination that will never be transformed into success. Michelangelo spent four years painting his masterpiece on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel. Before the frescos were finished, however, Michelangelo went through a really hard time when he had no money and suffered painfully from the physical discomfort of constantly standing on the wooden scaffolds and paint with his face looking upwards. If Michelangelo did not have the unrelenting determination to complete his painting, he would have been regarded as only an outstanding sculptor and would never have been known as also one of the most talented painters during the Renaissance. Not only persistence is one of the deciding factors of becoming a successful person, but resilience is also a crucial indicator of success as well. Suppose a person has both set his ambitious goals and put tremendous effort and energy into his goals, but if he is afraid of failure and easily gives up once defeated, he will definitely not be able to achieve true success. Elon Musk, the legendary entrepreneur, not only made incredible lofty goals such as sending humans to Mars, devoted a considerable amount of time and energy into his visionary projects, but also possessed an uncanny resilience in front of failure. As has been proved by his own words, “If you are not failing enough, you are not innovating enough”, Elon musk refused to quit even when SpaceX had crashed its rockets so many times that it was on the brink of bankruptcy. If Elon Musk had relinquished his space projects in the face of failure, he would have become broken and trapped in huge debt, and he would never have become the successful entrepreneur and billionaire he is today. As we can see, the goals one sets for oneself are by no means an accurate measurement of true success. Without important attributes such as resilience and persistence, true success can never be attained even if the goals themselves are ambitious.

As we can see, the goals one sets for oneself are by no means an accurate measurement of true success. Without important attributes such as resilience and persistence, true success can never be attained even if the goals themselves are ambitious and far-reaching.
  4. "Success in any realm of life comes more often from taking chances or risks than from careful and cautious planning." The term ‘success’ usually comes as a result of a lot of efforts done. We cannot say that successful persons reached to their positions by luck or waiting a chance. It is a long way requires planning and preparations. The methodology of taking chances or risks to achieve success does not as effective way as does careful and cautious planning, because planning is the guideline of the way of success, and good planning takes into account chances and risks. Success has a long way to pass with efforts and patient, and this way has to be organized and full of preparations. Such ways could not guide to success without good planning, which is the guideline for such ways. Many successful persons achieved their positions by a lot of efforts and planning, rather than waiting chances. Tareq El-Suwaidan, a pioneer in the field of management and leadership sciences, might be a good example of such issue. As he raises the value of planning and preparation for success, he says that he had not waited for any chances, but he had worked hard in planning, and after being fully prepared for possible chances, they began to come. Thus, planning usually guarantee to achieve success, and it might be considered as the guideline of the way of success. In addition, making plans does not negate the chances might come and risks might be involved with. In fact, it is preparing for them. Good planning takes into consideration alternative scenarios and calculates probabilities of chances or risks that may happen, and then plans how to deal with them all. Therefore, when a chance comes, it would be a plan for taking it, and if any risk occurred, it would fully prepared to avoid it. Hence, we cannot rely on chances and risks for seeking success. Rather, we have to plan for all possible was, and work hard to reach to what we had planned. Therefore, success surely comes more often from careful and cautious planning.
  5. “Some people believe that in order to thrive, a society must put its own overall success before the well-being of its individual citizens. Others believe that the well-being of a society can only be measured by the general welfare of all its people.” Ethically speaking, the end does not justify the means when discussing the overall well being of a society. It is not in the best interest of the society as a whole if the well being of the individual citizens, who make up that society, are not valued. In the 1960s Jim Crow laws implemented separate but equal mandates in public spaces. It seemed to the policy makers that the society would thrive even though these laws were daunting on the African American population. When a select few are singled out for the “good of the whole society” protests occur and a society is polarized with those who are benefitting from certain policies and the select few that are not. The well being of a society is measured by the general welfare. General welfare can mean terms of happiness and health. When studying health care for example, it is important to make sure that health is a basic right that all citizens of a society have, and do not have to earn. If the people are generally healthy, the economy gets better; less people would need to owe the government money due to treatment they would not be able to pay for. The Affordable Care Act requires people to buy health insurance. In the economic cycle, the government is getting paid and people are receiving the health care that they need. When the general population is healthy, everyone benefits. Some may not agree when it comes to other aspects of success within a society. Some may argue that in other terms of a society, some countries put their average testing scores as a priority, because education is important. It is more important that all student should be able to succeed in schools and produce the best test scores compared to other countries. Yes, education is important in the success of a society, however high test scores do not mean that the well being of these students is put into the country’s best interest. Students often report high stress levels and the countries with the highest test score sometimes report the highest rating of student mental health issues like depression and suicide. In situations like these the success rate of the high scores should not take precedence over mental health. In addition to having the best test scores that also assumes citizens are able to pay for the resources to receive the best education available to implement these scores. Some European countries have proper mental health policies put in place for college students while also providing affordable education for those pursuing degrees. All in all, the general well being of a society does measure the success rate of that society and should be prioritized.
  6. What should a government do for a country to become successful? One of the most important agents responsible for a country’s success or failure is its government. It is the government which takes the lead in shaping the future of its country and nation. In its hands is the authority to manage and guide its country and people. Whenever the government does its job well, its country will succeed and prosper. On the contrary, whenever it abuses its power and turns corrupt, its country will decay and perhaps fall into a failed state. To maintain its country’s sustainability and to guarantee its success, the government has to take fundamental actions. In my opinion, the most important ones are human resources empowerment and law enforcement. Fact shows that human resources are the most important determinants of a country’s success or failure. If the quality of human resources in a country is high, the country will have the strength and potency to withstand all challenges, develop, and advance itself. On the contrary, if the quality of human resources in a country is low, the country will face many difficulties in keeping its survival and sustainability. Therefore, to achieve success for a country, its government has to empower its human resources to their utmost and keep their quality high. Fact also shows that law plays a vital role in guaranteeing a country’s success. Without law, society will be plunged into chaos, anarchy, or disorder - a condition which makes any development, growth, or advancement impossible. On the other hand, strong law enforcement will create a conducive environment for higher competitiveness and effective national innovation systems. Some countries’ success in improving their people’s standard of living is substantially due to their governments’ strong commitment to enforcing the law. In conclusion, human resources empowerment and law enforcement are the most vital actions that every government should prioritize highly among others in order to achieve success for its country. When both actions are already going on well, the country will gradually develop into a prosperous one.
