Hello everyone, I'm a junior majoring in Economics and Mathematics in a small state college. I was wondering is there any summer research internships available that you know. I'm applying to MIT Science research program, but that is very competitive. It'd be great if anyone suggest me some research internships that I can apply for summer 2021. Accomplished courses: Intermediate Micro and Macro, Econometrics, Development economics, Environmental Economics, Calculus 1-3, Linear Algebra 1-2, Abstract Algebra, Differential equations. GPA: 3.87 (both major), 3.90 (overall) Experience: 1 paper in EEA conference as a co-author, peer tutor and teaching assistant.

I am on a Fellowship for this school year at least, and have been given a specific fellowship for summer 2021 and 2022 that is only given to particular students. Can I put both of these on my CV and if so, how?

Hi, Do you think that the situation right now might impact all the international students that would be looking to get student visas this summer? Or do you suppose it will calm down by the summer ? Has anyone received information from universities regarding this ? Thanks ! Stay safe and wash your hands.

I am in the process of filling out an application to the AEA summer program and noticed that the approximate costs are listed (FAQ section) as just over $25,000.00. Does anyone that is a past attendee know if that is correct or are there scholarships available that are not listed or are students expected to use loans or hope to have wealthy parents?

Are there any top universities/academic programs (summer only) which take on undergraduate students who do not attend that institution as research assistants? Or are there any suggestions of how to make the best use of the summer before my senior year? (I've actually already taken my GRE, for those who are wondering). This is perhaps less pertinent for me, as I attend a Top 40 school and have a good deal of connections and opportunities at my institution. I do have a friend at an unranked public university who will significantly benefit from your advice.

Hi everyone, I am a long time lurker on this form and this is my first time posting. I would like to apply for a Mphil in economics at the University of Cambridge. However, I am not sure if my maths are strong enough to get into the program. I was wondering if applying is a worthwhile endeavor based on my profile and course/work history. Thanks for your interest and advice! Credentials: Econ Program: Top 50 liberal arts college in the United States GRE: Aiming for above a 168 in Quant and 160 in Verbal. College GPA: 3.9 Math Courses: Calc I-II (AP), Multivariable Calculus (A), Linear Algebra (A), Introduction to Real Analysis (A+), Evolutionary Game-Theory (Research project - In progress). Relevant Econ Courses: Macroeconomic Theory (A+), Microeconomic Theory (A), Political Economy (A-), The East Asian Growth Model (Honors Capstone Project - In Progress), Statistics (A+), Econometrics (In Progress). Relevant Work Experience: Last summer, I worked as a statistician for a Political Action Committee in the United States. Most of my responsibilities included gathering and collecting data and running simple regression models. This summer, I did a econometrics internship for the city I live in. My responsibilities included building multiple regression models (running stepwise regressions, testing for multicollinearity, etc...), data mapping using GIS software, and presenting my results to the city director. Other Experiences: I (with the recommendation of one of my professors) am trying to get a paper published. I received a revise and resubmit decision from the journal last spring and should have the paper resubmitted by the end of the summer. LORs: One professor got their PHD from the University of New Mexico One professor got their PHD from the University of Chicago (The one who suggested I submit my paper for publication). My greatest concern for getting into the program is that I did not take Differential equations. I have taught myself some Diff equ. for the independent research project I am doing on Game Theory (eg. variation of parameters, Laplace transformations, dynamic optimization) and I have used Fourier transformations before for statistical smoothing in one of my internships. Will this be enough to make up for my relative lack of mathematical coursework. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

Which internship would be the better one to go for in my first summer of my 3-year MA program starting next fall: Central Intelligence Agency (Economic Analysis) or Council of Economic Advisers (summer only internship)? Both have strong future implications for me, the CIA I'd like to work for a few years between finishing my PhD and starting an academic position, and the CEA I'd love to work as a Senior Economist during my academic career for 1-2 years. I actually am now seeing the CIA as a much more competitive position, it requires a writing sample and more than a few skills, while the CEA just requires experience in Stata and good grades. The CIA summer internship is paid fairly competitively while the CEA internship is unpaid. I'm interested in health & development policy analysis as one of my research areas... are there any accepted guidelines out there or does anyone have any advice as to which I could lean towards?

Hey everybody! Let's do something to get our minds off of admission results for a bit. What books are you planning on reading over the summer, before classes/math camps start? I'm thinking about books that will help you get ready for the next 5 years, though I guess this can be anything you've been meaning to read. For anyone who's already been through this process, please share books you read to prepare (or wish you had!). I will start. I found a copy of "Mostly Harmless Econometrics" in a used bookstore and snatched it up, thinking it might be good to read before taking graduate econometrics courses.

Hi all! Current stats: Undergraduate student graduating Fall 2019 Overall GPA: 3.55 Accounting GPA: 3.9 GMAT: Not taken, but currently registered in May after Spring Finals Additionally: Currently enrolled in Calculus I and projected to finish with either a B+ or A- (depending on how the final goes) Enrolling in Calculus II in the Spring and Linear Algebra in the summer Will be working as a research assistant in the accounting department next semester through the time I graduate at my current university. Will be able to secure LORs from Accounting Department Head, and two other accounting professors. Goal/hope is to go straight to the PhD after completing my undergrad. Any suggestions on how to beef up my resume and which schools I should be targeting? Will have time to take any additional math courses in the Spring and Summer prior to a program potentially starting. Back up plan is to apply to a few masters programs that I've already researched and made contact with.

Hi everyone, First post here! I interned this past summer at a regional fed bank in research. I am a rising Junior and have an offer from a bulge bracket bank (MS,GS,JPM) to intern in risk management. I am thinking that it would be a good opportunity to see the banking sector from the inside. However, I am not sure how it would impact Ph.D. admissions. Would doing another summer at the fed help me in applications substantially more? Thanks!

Hi all, I've been a long time lurker of the forum and have found a lot of the posts to be very informative. It will be my turn to apply to PhD programs next year, and I am wondering which and how many schools I should be targeting + other concerns. Any advice, wake-up calls, etc. would be appreciated. :) PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Economics and Math double major from USNEWS top 10 undergrad, top 15-20 PhD program Undergrad GPA: 4.00 GRE: Taking this summer - have some questions/concerns below Math Courses: AP Calc BC, Calc III (A), Linear Algebra (A+), DiffEQ (A), Probability (A+), Mathematical Statistics (A+), Intro to Proofs (A+), Stochastic Processes (MA level, A+), Abstract Algebra (A+), Analysis I (A+), Game Theory (A) Econ Courses: AP Micro + Macro, Intermediate Micro I (A), Intermediate Micro II (A), Econometrics (A+), Microeconometrics (MA level, A+), Research Independent Study (A). Planning to take Intermediate Macro, PhD Micro I, and a thesis class in the fall. Other Courses: Intro to Computer Science (A+), Data Structures (A), gen ed classes Letters of Recommendation: 1. Top 10 PhD, tenured professor for whom I will have RA'd for a year by the time of application, advised my independent study, likely thesis advisor 2. Top 5 PhD, tenured professor with whom I took a class, and for whom I will be TA-ing next year 3. Top 10 PhD, tenured professor for my MA metrics class - I was the only undergrad in the class and did very well so I hope the letter will be good Research Experience: 1. 1 year of RA-ing/coding and simulations for the first recommendation letter writer, some of it through an independent study 2. Honors thesis, on which I received a fellowship to get a head start this summer. 3. 1 year + half a summer of working in a econ policy lab at my school, still unsure if I should commit myself to it in the future - have some questions/concerns below. 4. 1 summer REU, data science/sociology interdisciplinary project the summer after my sophomore year, which cemented my interest in doing social science research. Did a lot of coding and data analysis in Python. Teaching Experience: 1. TA-ing for undergrad econometrics next year 2. Tutored for multivariable calculus and linear algebra for a year and a half. Research Interests: empirical IO, applied econometrics, health Target Schools: top 10 and business schools with strong IO programs Concerns: 1. Should I continue working for the policy lab next year? It is a paid job but it will be a lot of time commitment doing that, TA-ing, writing a thesis, taking PhD Micro, and applying to jobs/programs all at the same time. The Econ professor who leads the lab offered me a chance to co-author a paper, and I will be working for them for part of the summer, but frankly I find the subject of my thesis to be more interesting than the lab's paper and would like to dedicate my time to that next year. At the same time, the co-authorship seems appealing, so I don't know. I'm also not good at saying no to people, and I'm not sure how the professor will feel if I tell her I won't have enough time to contribute to the lab next semester. 2. What range of GRE scores should I aim for this summer as a minimum / how much studying should I do? From what I've read, schools use GRE as a filter, but I don't know if that also applies for math major applicants. 3. I've seen people recommend others to do a year or two of RA-ing before applying to boost their chances of getting into a top program. Is there a glaring hole in my profile that would warrant delaying my applications another couple of years? The only thing I can think of is that only one of my recommenders will have known me through research. I'm not sure what the ideal split between research recs/class recs should be. I could ask the policy lab professor for a rec, but they are not as well-published as my current ones and there is the issue of me potentially no longer being in the lab next year. 4. How many schools should I apply to? How safe is it to just apply to top 10-11 + business schools + a smattering of schools in the top 20 with good locations and/or research fit (like UCLA, UCSD, Duke)? Any insights / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello guys, almost everyone advised me to fully enjoy the summer before PhD and I'm going to do that of course, but at the same time, I'm quite worried about what's gonna come in several months. Are you guys really going to have fun and relax in this summer? I want at least look into the syllabi of the first year core courses and get an idea but I can't find them on the department website :proud: I can only browse their course schedule and see who is teaching what.. So I guess I should email to a random PhD student and ask for the syllabus..? or would there be another option for me to get to know which textbooks are normally used there etc?

I am lacking some essential math courses for PhD in econ, like ODE, Real Analysis and Probability. Can anyone tell me how useful it is if I take these courses during summer? Class hour is the same (~36 hours+conference), but each course only lasts for ~1 month. Courses under consideration: LSE: Real Analysis, Advanced Econometrics UCB: Intro to Analysis (MATH 104) McGill (somehow I know somebody here): ODE and Probability If I cannot take these courses, probably I can only take Intro to Analysis at my home next semester. Do Adcom discount my grades obtained during summer school?? Are they useful for admission?? Thanks all!!

I've just finished up my sophomore year in Undergrad at a large public university (top 30 econ dept). I am now fairly certain that I want to go to graduate school in economics, and would obviously like to get into a top 10 program. However, due to an internship falling through at a city's development coalition, I no longer am doing anything relevant with my summer, which makes me nervous about my grad applications. However, I have an internship at an economic research center during the academic year, have taken tons of math (I'm double majoring in math and econ), will be taking quite a few graduate courses in econ, and currently have a 4.0. How much will not having a summer internship hurt my application? Also, what would you all advise me to do with my summer now that my only real obligation is a part-time summer job? I've started learning Python and getting better at Stata because these seem relatively useful in econ, but I'm not sure if this is the right direction to go in.

Hi, I am currently an undergraduate at Occidental College, a top 40 liberal arts college, in Southern California, and I am considering getting a PhD in Economics. I have heard about a summer training program for economists by the AEA over the summer. Although I am working at a economic policy think tank in South Africa this summer, I am considering doing it next summer. Can anyone attest to the value of the program? Note: They have us take classes in math, micro and econometrics, as well as work on a research paper with economists, network with economists, and learn about grad school life, admissions, and job opportunities for economists.
