  1. Hi.. I want to learn technology orientated threads which will help my growing my carrier.
  2. Please find my response to the issue topic essay below. Please guide me and give me feedback on where my essay stands. Please also point out the changes and improvements I need to work on. Topic : As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. My Response: As time passes and technology evolves people are becoming more dependent on technology for problem solving. I believe that this is compromising the ability of an individual to think and reason out. Technology pulls humans and the real world apart. It makes them lose confidence in themselves. People using calculators for small calculations is an example. Technology is changing and evolving with great pace. People intend to keep up with that pace and be updated. Mundane tasks are becoming automated. Technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence make suggestions that restricts the people to think or decide for themselves. It restricts them to take up a path that is different from what they were already on because such technologies make suggestions based on our their previous decisions. Such technologies do not allow people to think out of the box and to some extent lure them into taking up the road that is mostly travelled by them. Because the internet provide with all answers people have stopped thinking logically and brainstorming when it comes to problem solving. It is restricting the ability of an individual to make decisions based on self evaluation. They simply go for a solution that has the most positive reviews instead of coming up with a solution of their own. Technology is keeping people distant. As everything is possible if you have a device with internet connectivity no one bothers to visit their own relatives on holidays. Family meet ups have reduced because of video conferencing. Technology is not only affecting the critical thinking but also the emotional thinking of people. I understand that technology helps save a lot of time initially. If we use the time we saved using the various technology resources to use our own thought process to get to the same result, we would discover a lot more dos and don'ts. Hence in turn it will save use time later when the similar issue is encountered. So actually technology is not actually saving any time as shortcuts always get back at you later on the path. Additionally technology refrains us from using the full capacity of our brains. In conclusion I would like to restate my position that people relying on technology more, is deteriorating their ability to think for themselves and assess what is good or bad for them because of the above mentioned reasons.
  3. Issue question: Science and technology will one day be able to solve all of society’s problems. Science and technology have solved many social issues in the past decade. I agree that science and technology can solve some issues but not all. First, several social issues are related to institutions, culture and social norms, which cannot be altered by only science and technology. For example, many women face multiple layers of gender inequality at the workplace. Women are still under-represented in managerial or leadership positions even in high-income countries while many women in developing countries suffer from heavy burden on household responsibility. Moreover, discrimination against the black-skinned race still exists, resulting in inequality of economic opportunities in today's society. Changing social norms and institutions requires a huge amount of time to change an individual's perception, which science and technology solely cannot change. Second, social issues such as poverty and unemployment arise from systemic or market failures. For instance, countries need strong private sector companies to create employment opportunities. Private companies need an enabling environment for their growth, such as access to finance, market, and better regulatory environments. The improvement of market system and business environments cannot be achieved only using science and technology but require context-specific solutions developed by local people. It is important to note that science and technology have solved many social problems in the past. For instance, it has improved the quality of and the accessibility to education for marginalized people or areas using the internet, online courses and digital devices. Many diseases have been treated or eliminated by advanced medical sciences such as vaccinations to yellow fever. However, solely science and technology cannot solve all the social issues inherited to social institutions, cultures as well as systemic issues. In summary, I disagree that science and technology will be able to solved all of society's issues while it has still helped to improve our society.
  4. Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. People Should use technology on their necessity, not to submerge in it to spoil themselves. Thousands of years ago when human first discovered the use of fire that was the first incident of using technology. That invention made them stronger against wild beast, also human used it for cooking. That was the first evidence of using technology to make life easy, but now Technogym is more complicated and creating convoluted lifestyle. For example, the mobile phone was invented with the purpose to have a conversation even on the go. But now people are not using the phone only for talking, but also for gaming, social media, watching videos etc. which make them addicted to it. That makes life complicated instead of easier. Another thing is that people are becoming lazy because of technology. They are now can order food, shopping or buying something from online which inhibit them to go outside. After the discovery of internet Americans become more obese than before. People are now failing to burn minimum calorie they need to fit themselves. The primary purpose of social media was to make people closer to each other even if they can't meet them in real life. Instead of that, people are becoming more isolated and become depressive. There should be no doubt that technology makes life easier, but people should understand that purpose of that technology and should refrain it, from the abuse of that technology. There was a story that a magician taught his son how to drive a broomstick for cleaning home. His son learned spell command incantation, but didn't know how to stop the broomstick. Technology doing, the same thing to humans. Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated. 5. Prompt: Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated. Due to the progession of technology, many people fall victim to paying any the price to keep up with this machinery. This price is not just in the form of dollar bills, but also in time spent with loved ones. People think they know what technology costs up front, but are blind to the underlying costs that creep in after the purchase. One issue with technology is the boom of social media apps. This causes people to become distracted with their phones when they should be present with the people they are currently sharing experiences. Sons and daughters sitting around the dinner table with parents may not share a word with one another because they are too focused on the drama unfolding on a screen. Students have trouble focusing in school because they cannot look away from their notification of celebrity news. Even while driving many adults refuse to wait until they arrive at their destination before they check a sports update. Relationships become weaker when people do not communicate, and technology is the cause of this lack of communication. Another drain to people is the fact that these instruments are constantly updating. There are always new features being designed and some folks prioritize having the updates before anyone else. This established a sense of pride and arrogance in those who can afford to keep buying the new equipment every time it is released. Phones, televisions, watches, refridgerators, home security, and many other devices are all constantly growing and changing the way people operate their lives. Communities once so close become at odds with one another in competition over who posseses the greatest technology, and who possesed it first. However, technology was intended to make our lives easier. A brother moving to Germany to pursue his dreams of being employed by an German orchestra can still keep in touch with his family and friends back in America. A mother having difficulty cooking for a picky child can use Google to find dishes that will please the whole family. Yet, technology takes away from people sharing moments together and causes jealousy and anxiety. While some parts of life are easier with it, the most important aspects of our life are destroyed by it. Since the creation of the microchip, the cell phone, and the computer, society has been hungry for more. Technology deceives us by wearing the sheepskin of making everyday life easier. The true character of technology is that it separates us from the people we love, while we are least expecting it. There are many costs that people are willing to pay to keep up with technology that result in harm they never knew.

  7. Hello I recently gave a practice test where these 2 questions came up. Please grade then & help me improve. Thank you. "Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated." I disagree with the statement that technology makes our lives more complicated rather technology has eased many problems in our lives. One of the sectors where technology has worked its wonder the most is communication. With the advent of cellular phone we can talk with our loved ones anytime from anywhere. There can be an emergency at home or in the office and we can pick up our phone to make the desired call. Thirty years back my mother was living abroad and she had to wait for a letter every month from home to keep abreast with what is happening at home. Now we use different apps to not only make calls but video calls and can see live pictures. A birth of a baby, a wedding, graduation ceremony or even death of near and dear ones living thousands of miles away can be experienced in our homes. Technology has not only brought families closer but technology is used to make business meetings, job interviews or even interviews with prospective academic supervisors from different countries sitting at our laptops from home. We can even consult with doctors in far away countries using video chats. Internet which is perhaps the greatest invention of the modern times has helped in distribution of knowledge through e-books and journals. Reserachers now -a days can get hold of relevant information at the tip of their fingers. We can also know the latest news and analysis from all around the world the moment it occurs. Revolutionary events such as the Arab Spring used the social media to gather supporters and disseminate information. Nevertheless technology has its misuses as well. Cyber crimes are commited where private informations are stolen for ransom or other evil purposes. The hacking of yahoo email accounts is a reminder to everyone of how technology can create complications in our lives. Recently a friend of mine had her phone stolen, later she found that her social media and personal email have all been consoliated. She had to go though a lot of trouble to fix the problem. Overall there are drawbacks to technological advancement but the major impact of technology has improved our lives Argum3ent: SuperCorp recently moved its headquarters to Corporateville. The recent surge in the number of homeowners in Corporateville proves that Corporateville is a superior place to live than Middlesburg, the home of SuperCorp's current headquarters. Moreover, Middlesburg is a predominately urban area and according to an employee survey, SuperCorp has determined that its workers prefer to live in an area that is not urban. Finally, Corporateville has lower taxes than Middlesburg, making it not only a safer place to work but also a cheaper one. Therefore, Supercorp clearly made the best decision. The argument is flawed due to the following assumptions: The first stated assumption is that because there is a sudden increase in homeowners Corporateville is better than Middleburg. The sudden increase in homeowners could be due to cheaper houses, people buying new homes due to the good condtiiton of the economy or lower interest rates for new house buyers. Any of these factors may contribute to more people buying homes in Corporateville and has nothing to do with Middleburg being a worse place to live. The argument mentions that SuperCorp conducted a survey that found that its employees prefer to live in area that is not urban. The findings of one survey may not reflect the true sentiment of the employees because it is unclear as to how many people were surveyed and what the questions actually were. People give wrong information in surveys and sometimes the reason of the survey determines its findings, such as if SuperCorp had already decided to move its headquarters to a non-urban area it may have designed the survey in a way that would justify the decision. The argument makes the assumption that the new place is a safer place to work without providing any facts to back it up. The increased number of people in Corporateville can cause the price of housing to go up due to higher demand, which will refuting the assumption that Corporateville has lower housing prices. Finally, the assumptions made in the argument can be debated whcih will result in a different conclusion as to whether Supercorp has made the best decision or not.
  8. Prompt: Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated. Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position. My essay: In the dawn of science, the researchers brought new technology to fight our day to day problem and to make our lives simple. It's technology that made our life simple and gave us the chance and time to debate out its' complication brought into our lives. Technology gave us more chance to flourish. Technology, like e-mail and other means of communication increased our productivity, whereas we had to wait a lot of time in correspondence through mail service. Our daily commute system made the distance irrelevant. We can travel the world in a day. We can do our job by commuting in rails and cars, made our lives easy. Technology gave us the chance to increase the productivity of mills and factories. We're producing more in less time. The farming system is now revolutionized, decreasing the chance of famine and death from hunger. Induction of electricity, made our life easy and simple. Technology increased the quality of life. Technology brought us better treatment and medicine to fight disease. The invention of vaccine, decreased human death. We eradicated lethal diseases like small pox and polio. The invention of anti-biotics made us immune to infections. We're treating cancer and in a quest of finding cure for AIDS. But we already can delay the death of a AIDS patient. The life expectancy has increased. Child and mother death during child birth has decreased. Technology and science solved lots of problem we used to face. But, they also brought new consequences. Like anti-biotics resistances, global warming and wastage of forest land. Use of more sugar and less physical exercise brought obesity and diabetes. Our research in science may bring new solutions and solve the problems we're facing now due to technology. Technology is a boon. Like any other tools it's human who can decide it to use for good and bad. Human research and introduction of technology made our life easy and simple, with better life expectancy.
  9. I will be very grateful if you give some suggestions. Thanks in advanceTopic- As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.Essay-Humans have well developed there quality of thinking, then to deteriorate. Technology all over the world has so widely developed that people can use things without being to move from place to place as in ancient times. In today’s world technology is something unavoidable, so it has its own advantages and disadvantages on the thinking of humans.Firstly, technology has improved our communication power, it has provided us with different platforms to communicate easily to our colleagues and loved ones. For instance, Facebook, Whatsapp and various other platforms have break the bridge between short and long distance communication. Also, E-mail is one of the best thing happened to the world by providing us with instant contact in our private and corporate life. On the other hand, Technology also reduced our ‘ Talking Capabilities’ which is a disadvantage to the humans. Nowadays, people are so indulge in their phones that they don’t communicate in person to each other.Secondly, increasing websites and blogs for instant information is a great thing in a society which is so busy in their life. People don’t have time to read the whole news or article, but applications in phones have made it easier to access it anywhere to get a glance whenever needed. But with increasing banal culture of looking to information and just reading in a small amount has decreased capability of reading it from the books or newspaper. Additionally, some cafe’s start mentioning on sign boards that not to use phones and just talk to people or person with you. They start providing you with magazines and novels to read while drinking coffee or tea.Furthermore, Playing games with statistical modes or playing games which improves your thinking power surely able to rise human analytical skills. But playing games whole day will make you more lazier than anyone in this world. Outside activities tend to move away from gamers who always indulge themselves in games , also they induce health problems and mental illness while sitting on same place whole day. Example Body aches, disturbed body posture , obesity have reduced the thinking capabilities of humans. In conclusion, Tech has provided us with everything in this world, from communication improvement to getting information in just a second of time. Also it has been researched that gaming has improved analytical skills, but to use tech wisely and judiciously is what we need to implement and not overuse it. Anything which is overused will surely deteriorate our thinking abilities as well as mess with our health.

Anything which is overused will surely deteriorate our thinking abilities as well as mess with our health.
  11. Please grade and let me know what you think! Prompt: As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. The power of humans to think autonomously is not so easy to deter. Even with the exponential advancement of technology seen over the past few centuries, a pattern has become apparent time and time again: when technology comes to our aid in times of need, people do not simply stop thinking altogether since their problem has been solved. Instead, they move on to think about other problems that might not have been answerable or even foreseeable before the preceding one was addressed. Advances in biomedical and laboratory technology have allowed researchers and doctors to explore new worlds, both figuratively and literally, while fostering a desire to know more about them. As a biology major and aspiring researcher, I can attest that the advent of genome databases has made the fields of molecular biology, cellular biology, and genetics infinitely more accessible to both people of my education level and those who have decades more experience than I do. Genome databases allow researchers to look at the genome at the level of individual chromosome, genes, or nucleotides, which greatly aids in answering questions about which mutations cause certain physical traits or what surrounding genetic factors affect gene expression. By answering these questions with relative ease thanks to genome databases, scientists can focus on new problems, such as how to correct such mutations or manipulate certain genetic factors to restore proper gene function. Gene databases thus promote scientific inquiry by allowing scientists to focus their time and energy on solving more complex issues, such as curing a disease caused by genetic mutation, rather than needing to use these precious commodities to rediscover what those who identified the disease before them already determined. The use of technology in the fields of crime and justice also demonstrates how technologic advances have helped the people in these fields do their jobs more efficiently. DNA testing, fingerprint databases, and facial recognition technology have made the criminal justice system more streamlined and accurate. With these technologies, police are able to apprehend the correct criminal in a shorter amount of time without obviating the important task of the police officers themselves to use proper moral and legal judgment when it comes time to arrest a criminal. No technological advance could replace the crucial role of humans judgment in the justice system, be it independent thought of police, detectives, or judges. Instead, those who work in the crime and justice fields rely on technology so that they can do their jobs quickly, accurately, and humanely. It is often said that true creativity is a spontaneous occurrence and not something that can be deliberately sought. While this is true to an extent, people involved in creative processes such as artists, painters, sculptors, or writers can indeed spark the creative process by looking to the works of others. Even those without direct access to paintings, sculptures, or books can enjoy the same creative catalyst as those who might have regular access to these works. Thanks to technologies such as computers, smartphones, and copiers, aspiring artists can derive inspiration from contemporary and preceding artists whenever and wherever they desire. The capability of humans to think independently – be it for scientific, moral, or creative thought - is one that millions of years of evolution has instilled in us. It is etched into our nature to bring independent thought into solving problems, not to let technologies that make solving these problems easier silence our ability to think at all. While some technologies can certainly distract us from independent thought, such as mind-numbing cartoons on TV or video games portraying senseless violence, technology more often than not makes our lives easier so that we can put our enormous intellectual capability to use in a positive way.
  12. Hi Folks, Would really appreciate your comments on this. I know this topic is used in the books and could be over familiar - but since this was my first attempted essay would like some feedback. Will happily do crit for crit if you share the link. Cheers, Wizkid EDIT: I encountered another topic in the pool - and believe the below would serve quite accurately for this one as well: The human mind will always be superior to machines because machines are only tools of human minds. ************************** As People rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. First Response [This was written under near exam conditions, and took me ~33 mins including drafting and writing (however, since this was in the guide book some of the brainstorming happened earlier – as I was reading the book I was thinking how would I write it, so…). Given this was my first practice, I wanted to finish the essay even after the time limit. I've made corrections to spelling and some minor formatting – as suggested in the forum, but no other change. There were about 20 misspelt words/typos – I'm not sure how bad that is.] Our current age is marked by remarkable progress and exponential growth in technology - it might be the singular trait to define the last 100 years. With progress in technology - it's reach in every aspect of human life increases and so does our dependency on it. However - it does not replace the human ability to 'think'. Technology gives us a set of tools to help us achieve our goals and aspirations - individually as well as as a group; nonetheless the originality of human thinking is not under challenge. Thinking - in its purest form - is formulation of new ideas and abstract concepts, is being able to take the intuitive leap and see a pattern from only raw data. In other words, thinking is the precursor of creativity - of laws of nature, of a work of art - or a piece of literature with profound insights. No technology exists yet - that will be able to replace human endeavor in these fields - and is unlikely to exist in the future. Technological advancement has led us to automation, where human labor is replaced by simple to complicated machines. However - those machines are designed and developed by humans only. It is human thinking - that has generated the algorithms and the instructions, has converted a process into a set of rules that can be programmed into a computer. In other words - it has replaced our ability to follow instructions and perform repetitive tasks - not our intellectual and creative abilities. Modern machines, one could argue, performs a lot of complex calculations, takes split second decisions - does things that were earlier held as only possible by a human brain. It has to be considered however - the machine is simply performing as instructed, and some smart 'thinking' human being has been able to create a set of instructions that can be followed to reach a certain decision, or has programmed the machine to perform fast calculations. I can write a program that can multiply large numbers dramatically faster than me, however it has no 'conscious idea' of what it is doing - it's simply following my instructions, and that ability should not be misinterpreted as thinking. Taking an example of chess, when one of the leading human chess players, Gary Kasparov, was beaten by a dedicated chess machine in 1997 - people dubbed that as the end of human superiority. Chess was considered an epitome of ability to think - and was taken over by technology. However, it has to be noted firstly that the machine was programmed by humans only - who created the algorithms for playing chess. Secondly, and more importantly - the way the computer played chess was significantly different than a human. It had a number of dedicated processors that could calculate possible chess moves numbering in millions - an amount of information that a human brain can't handle - and was able to apply the method of brute force to find out the best chess moves. The human element in chess is vastly different - being able to be creative and intuitive - even without calculating all possible outcome. Kasparov himself noted that, a better way was a coordination between a human player and a computer. Thus, in 2005 - in an open chess tournament a couple of moderately ranked human players - being assisted with three general purpose laptops and a few standard chess programs, were able to defeat the ranking human players as well as the leading chess machine then - Hydra. As we can see from these examples - technology makes our lives easier by freeing us from doing the mundane and laborious tasks – so that we can focus on the more 'intellectual' efforts – of coming up with new theories to explain the workings of the universe, of studying human physiology and inventing ways of preventing disease, of describing our society and expressing ourselves through art and literature – and of being able to improve technology itself. Technology helps us in doing all these – quite significantly in some aspects. But it does not replace our place to think. Humankind, in collaboration with technology, can now march into a new era of achievement and progress. Edited Response [This can be considered an improved version – a revised draft if you will. I did some research to get the facts straight – and tried to make the essay more organized and focused. However the basic premise remains same – in refuting the popular definition of thinking and arguing that machines don’t think. Obviously this could not have been written in 30 minutes (at least by me)– however I'm giving it here to get a response on both versions – to get your opinion which (if any) aspects of the 2nd one should have been present in the first one– which would help me in trying these aspects under time constraint.] Our current age is marked by remarkable progress and exponential growth in technology - it might be considered the singular trait to define the last 100 years. With progress in technology; it's reach in every aspect of human life increases and so does our dependency on it. However - technology does not replace the human ability to 'think'. Technology gives us a set of tools to help us achieve our goals and aspirations - individually as well collectively; nonetheless the originality of human thinking is not under challenge. Thinking - in its purest form - is formulation of new ideas and abstract concepts. Thinking is being able to take the intuitive leap and see a pattern from only raw data. Thinking is the precursor of creativity- creativity that helps us understand the laws of nature, produce a work of art - or a piece of literature with profound insights. No technology exists yet - and is unlikely to exist in the future- that will be able to replace human endeavor in these fields. It is true, that advancement in technology and automation has led to creation of various tools and machines – which does a number of seemingly complicated tasks – tasks that were earlier a preview of humans. A modern computer with advanced software can perform complex calculations in split seconds, can suggest actions and even take decisions. However, the way it achieves all that is simply by following instructions – algorithms generated by smart 'thinking' human beings. It is human thinking that has been able to convert the process of decision making into a set of rules, it is human creativity and originality as demonstrated in advancements in Number Theory and Numerical Methods that has enabled a computer to perform advanced mathematics. In other words – it is human thinking only that has resulted in development of technology and its feats. As demonstrated in the famous 'Chinese Room' argument by John Searle - a computer can perform complicated tasks while having no conscious awareness of what it is doing. It is simply following instructions. Even though technology helps us in solving problems, the necessary 'thinking' for it to do so is very much a human prerogative. Taking an example from the game of chess – a game which is considered epitome of human intelligence and thinking – when Gary Kasparov, the leading human chess player then, was defeated by a computer in 1997 – it was dubbed the end of human superiority in being intelligent. Surely – if a computer can plays chess better than human beings – they must be 'smarter'! However, upon reflection we can see that the game of chess requires two different traits – not only original, creative thinking and being able to take intuitive leaps – but also ability to perform calculations as to possible moves and searching ones memory of previous similar games. A computer is better at the second – and thus is able to utilize its superior calculative abilities to derive the best chess move – a method of brute force. But it does not emulate the human ability of original thinking. Kasparov himself was a proponent of the idea that a man – machine collaboration, one with superior creativity and the other with superior memory and calculation capability – is the best player of chess. It is no surprise that in 2005, in an open chess tournament - a couple of moderately ranked human players, being assisted with three general purpose laptops and a few standard chess programs, were able to defeat the ranking human players as well as a leading chess machine -Hydra. It is also to be noted that development of all the chess computers - with dedicated software and hardware, required considerable original thinking from human technologists. From a different angle, one can say that with advent in technology, a lot of problem solving tasks required in day to day life are now automated. That it robs a human being of the daily practice of thinking – resulting in our reliance on technology and losing independent thinking. Granted that some form of problem solving skills is now outsourced – but it is only the simpler, repetitive kind of tasks requiring more following than thinking. Instead of diagnostic determination, medical professionals can now focus on more theoretical research in understanding human physiology, in prevention and elimination of diseases. Instead of doing menial calculations, scientists can focus on more intellectual pursuits of understanding and explaining the workings of the universe, of coming up with new theories to advance mathematics. Technology gives us is the access to knowledge and information – giving us food for thought, the ability to collaborate with other thinkers across the globe. One could also argue, that these represent only a small subset of humans – and for the rest 'thinking' is not required. However with the leisure and freed time achieved thanks to technology, more people can now engage in arts and literature, in music- in creative pursuits. To summarize, Technology does not diminish our ability to think, it merely reflects a qualitative shift from the simple and regular to more creative, more complex. Technology frees us of the mundane, allowing us to focus on the original. Humankind, in collaboration with technology, can now march into a new era of achievement and progress.
  13. Hi, Please review my issue essay. Thank you. My issue topic is, Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. My essay : In the 21st century, where countries are just a google hangout away. It is safe to say technology paves the way for a simpler life. All it takes is a little effort as setting it up is no calk walk. Technology is an excellent enabler. Through the innumerable networking software and hardware at our disposal, technology helps enables worldwide collaboration. Professionals now work for virtual companies from the comforts of their homes, striking a perfect work-life balance. Besides, the global outreach of a common man too is ballooning. An American wedding planner can get a dress custom designed in Paris and meanwhile, get gift boxes manufactured in China. Scientific experts are speculating a human colony in mars in coming years. The innovations in automobile industries are making roads safer. Google has developed a prototype for the first ever autonomous car that requires most no human intervention. This leaves almost no room for human error, thereby decreases number of road accidents. Many companies like Tesla motors are building cars that use only electricity, drastically reducing pollution and saving energy. Healthcare has undergone major revamp thanks of advancements in the field of bio-medical engineering. The sensitive and accuracy of hospital tools help Doctors focus on diagnosis. It can be clearly agreed upon that technology helps focus on the more complex tasks and broaden the range of problems that can be solved. However, technology does destroy jobs that involve old practices like telegram. Besides, technological perks reduces the need for human interaction hence making people indolent. Also adoption of technology and its practice is no easy task. In the long run, technology helps make life easier.

  15. Hi, I have written the below issue for GRE awa practice.I know it is very bad but please give me points of improvement and also how much can i expect in gre with this kind of essay. Thanks in advance. Issue topic:As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Technology is an integral part of our lives today. The growing technology has produced some great wonders, which we never imagined were possible a few years ago. It is the human who has developed technology, so I do not agree that technology hinders human thinking ability. The world population is growing at an exponential rate. In order to meet the needs of so many people it is necessary that we become efficient and productive with the limited resources we have. It is technology which has enabled us to be highly efficient in terms of food and shelter. The area of land which could produce 100kg of rice is now capable of producing 10 times more with the help of modern technology. The modern day technology is not only supporting us but also helping us survive. Imagine if we did not have cars, trains or airplanes. How would you travel long distances? You would be confined to a small area. Today we can roam around the world and see places which ancestors never knew even existed. The transport and communication has enabled us to do business on a global level. Our best technology creation, computer has worked wonders for us. Complex calculation, saving information as well as making this information available with just a click is just amazing. It is the humans who have created this new technology to save our lives from dreadful diseases. We try to make our lives as easy as possible and today technology has made this possible in every way. There are two sides to every coin. Technology also has disadvantages. Today the children start using calculators at an early age in school .Even simple calculations which were earlier done manually are now being done on calculators. This hinders the development of the brain. We refrain from walking even short distances which has adverse effects on our health. But these things can be avoided by taking some precautionary steps. Thus, I would conclude by saying that we do rely on technology today but, it does not hamper our thinking ability.
  16. Question: As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. Response: With the development of science and technology made throughout the human history, especially the past one hundred years or so, people these days are spending more time relying on technology to solve various types of problems. Admittedly, the improvement of technology and its contribution to a more convenient daily life does to certain extent obviate the necessity of many traditional tasks, subtly affecting the humans’ ability of thinking. Nevertheless, as a whole effect in general, technology progress improves working efficiency and labor safety, and frees humans from low-level repetitive physical work to high-level decision-making intellectual work. Therefore, advancement in technology will, in no way, reduce the ability of humans to think. It is true that in many situations, the requirement for thinking seems less demanding than before due to the development of technology as the “brains” of computers have replaced humans’ role in many tasks. For instance, students no longer need to think hard to solve involving algebraic equations as calculators could do the job for them; engineers do not have to worry about the side effect of modifying their design drawings at one place as in the past due to the modern CAD software’s smart updates for all affected parts; people nowadays could simply forget about their previous pains of finding parking lots, when they go shopping at some remote super-markets, as the contemporary online shopping systems will deliver the customers anything they need right away with the help of modern logistics, information technology and advanced transportation tools. The development of technology does so much that humans are no longer required to solve many of the traditional tasks and consequently humans’ ability of thinking seems indeed less explored, exercised or even deteriorating. But does the improvement of technology really eliminate the necessity of thinking and deprive humans of their opportunity of solving problems by themselves? With the fading away of stereotyped problems, such as solving algebraic equation on a piece of sketch paper, people are now faced with completely new types of problems, such as how to utilize calculators and computers to solve more complex problems where instead of the regular manipulation, innovation and creativity are tested. Technology on the one hand frees humans from perfunctory work, yet on the other hand brings in more demanding tasks. In the old days, factory workers had to operate their machines for repeated parts processing which seemed very laborious, however, nowadays they have to program CNC machines for automatic parts manufacturing and tool replacement and they are asked to work on more than one CNC machines as the manager feels the employees are “working less”. Technology does replace humans’ role in many traditional tasks, but technology puts humans in new positions which are more intellectually based. In addition, with the emergence of new technologies, a host of new problems have also turned up. The new technology of utilizing nuclear energy for generating electricity brings forward new questions of its ecological impact when the nuclear plant’s cooling water, contaminated with radiation, is discharged into the rivers and ocean. While the development of antibiotics helped cure many patients with infection, it at the same time also produced the question of bacteria’s developed immunity which makes many previously effective medicines invalid and that whether the development of these antibiotics indirectly facilitates the mutation of bacteria towards a more hazardous and dangerous state. All these new problems never existed before the development of these new technologies and they require far more thinking than the old problems. In conclusion, while technology frees humans from the traditional laborious work, it brings forth new types of problems which are more intellectually intense and even unprecedented. Humans’ mind has been working on all kinds of problems throughout the history to keep up with pace of our world change. With the development of technology, old problems might become obsolete but new problems with more challenges will never stop appearing, ensuring the opportunity for humans’ mind to explore and develop to a higher state and securing the brains’ role of thinking from deteriorating.
  17. Recent advancements in technology have led to many changes in our daily lives, but some people would argue that we are becoming too dependent on technology and that not all these changes are beneficial. Give your opinion and support your argument. :) Recent advancements in technology have changed our lives significantly. Most noticeably, they facilitate our living, as evidenced by more effectiveness, efficiency, convenience, and ease which result from their proper application. With the aid of recent advanced technologies, difficult tasks can be accomplished in less time with less effort and energy than they were in the past. However, some people are concerned that the convenience and ease that recent advanced technologies offer affect our humanity. Since technology can facilitate almost all our activities, many people depend more on it than on other people. For example, in big cities, real intimate interpersonal relationship seldom takes place because people devote their time, attention, and money more to their computers, smartphones, and the like, than to social activities with other people. Also in big cities, many children and youths prefer playing videogames solitarily to socializing or doing exercises with their friends. We have to admit that in our modern era, technology is indispensable as well as unavoidable. By nature, everyone wants to live an easy, comfortable, and enjoyable life. Technology can help us create such a life. However, too much dependence on technology can impair our sense of humanity and prevent us from living a healthy, balanced life, just as evidenced by some people’s addiction to the latest products of telecommunication technologies which makes them neglect their families and social life. Therefore, to get the best of technology, we have to use it wisely. Facts have taught us that the application of technology can lead to either beneficial or detrimental changes, depending on how we make use of technology. If we use technology for the good of humankind, hopefully it will make our world better. On the opposite, if we use it unwisely and let ourselves indulge uncontrollably in curiosity about the latest technologies, we are heading for our own destruction.
  18. Observation of traces is a new method of story-telling in design research by detecting traces on products. Find traces on objects, to interpret and decode them as physical and situational witness for human occupation. Try to gather new insights and understand the use, performance, operation of products through searching for traces without the presence of the user. This method is used to gain an initial understanding on how, how often and how long products have been used (over a period of time). This method is fun and easy to apply, unobtrusive and discrete because you will find traces of use and human occupation everywhere you go. It is omnipresent. Some traces are permanent, some temporary, some may be appearing just for a second, some are latent and not recognisable by the human eye. Develop an understanding of human behaviour and their use of products by detecting imprints, deposits, scratches or other traces of use. Does anyone have any particular problems that drives them round the bend everyday? Got a product that doesn't work properly? Do you improvise with a product as it does not work properly? What frustrates you in your everyday life with Products? I am conducting a research product so your replies would be much appreciated.
  19. Question : Does modern technology make life more convenient, or was life better when technology was simpler? (question taken from “Free IELTS Writing Topics”) Idea : Modern technology has influenced and changed the world and its people’s life so significantly that in many parts of the world, modern technology is even becoming indispensable and people are dependent on it. However, the attitudes towards modern technology are not the same among different people. On the one hand, many people find that modern technology makes their life more convenient. For example, three centuries ago intercontinental travel would take days or weeks and would supposedly make the travelers exhausted when they reached their destination. Nowadays, such travel will take only hours and, with all the conveniences which modern transportation provides, can be so enjoyable that the travelers can have a great time during the journey. On the other hand, some other people believe that life was better when technology was simpler. For example, before the invention of motorized vehicles, the atmosphere was relatively clean and people could enjoy clean air for breathing because air pollution rarely occurred. Now, with motorized vehicles being found almost everywhere, air pollution is becoming a global major environmental problem. Not only does it account for global warming but it also causes a great number of respiration-related diseases. I tend to support the opinion which favors modern technology. Continuous advancement of technology is inevitable because by nature, people are always curious and ever searching for something new and more. No one expects to stay the same all the time. Besides, like almost anything else in the world, modern technology also has its own good and bad sides. Our duty now is how to maximize its good sides while minimizing its bad sides. For example, efforts to make modern technology environmentally friendly should always be promoted and encouraged, so that we can still make the best use of modern technology while reducing its bad effects. :)
  20. Hello All, I am a newbie here. At the outset, introducing myself, I am Rishi Madhav, currently an MBA student at one of the top B-schools in India - XLRI, Jamshedpur. I am doing a 1-year MBA after having worked for around 7 years in Engineering design and Product Lifecycle Management. I have around 7 more months to go before I finish my MBA and I have started to feel I am more inclined towards research and analysis than a fast-paced corporate life. I have realized that I have always been interested in subjects which relate closely to a combination of Technology, Engineering and Management. And this has made me think about pursuing a PhD post my MBA - get into research and into academia after that. I thought I could reach to current PhD students and those preparing for it for some tips on: *How I can go about preparing for a PhD – mentally and practically as well. * What kind of challenges does on face while doing a PhD? * What is it that I could do now to work towards applying or preparing for it – getting in touch with Professors and so on. * I intend to get into a PhD as soon as possible but given the current constraints of the course, I am a little unsure as of now as to how I should go about it. Any suggestions/feedback is appreciated! Thanks a lot! Cheers! Rishi
