Hey, I am currently on the waitlist of UCSB and I would really like to go there. I declined all of my other offers except one. Is any of those who already got an offer thinking about rejecting it? Thank you in advance!

In 2021, I'm finishing my MRes in some European schools. The thing is that I'm not so sure about doing a Ph.D. now. I want to do more courseworks that prepare me to do research in micro theory. For example, now most of my classes are reading papers. It is nice to have some paper reading sessions to get some ideas about research. However, I think I don't learn much by just skimming through them. (I have to read at least 6 papers per week!!) I'm thinking to do one year more coursework. So, if the school allows me to go directly 2nd year MRes it would be nice. Otherwise, Ph.D. program that allows me to take some classes is also fine. Does anyone know some info about this kind of program in Europe? I am thinking about Toulouse M2 or Bonn…but I'm not sure about the exact situation... Just considering that they might have many people doing applied micro theory... Thank you.

Hi, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jose and I found this forum really useful since im thinking of taking the FPGEE by April of 2020. I graduated in 2008 in mexico with a degree in Quimico Farmacobiologo, which translated is Chemical Pharmaceutical Biologist. I moved to the US soon after and Im currently living in Phoenix Arizona. I haven't been able to work in the pharmacy field. but I'm currently employed in a hospital as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, and I've been thinking of becoming a Pharmacist. I know its been a while, but I think im able to do it. Im at the stage of getting all my paperwork from my university and sending it to ECE as well as studying for the test. I was wondering if someone could give me some information on what would be the best books and sources to study since a lot of previous posts were from years ago and they might be outdated. Also If anyone from Arizona knows of any preparation classes or someone willing to have study partner? Thanks!

So I've been working on what's turned into a pretty lengthy document I'm calling "Guide to Getting into a PhD Economics Program from ________ University", to leave with the econ department of my small, lower-ranked liberal arts school. It grew out of advice I was trying to give to an underclassman: I started thinking about all the things I wished I'd known before starting on this process, all the things I've learned from professors (very limited), admissions committee members (little more), current PhD students during visits (decent amount), and online (a huge amount). I know other people have had similar experiences -- if you come from a small LAC, especially one that's not particularly rigorous (like mine), it can be hard to know what to do to maximize your chances of getting an offer and there often isn't anyone around who knows anything about the process. My hope is this document I made is going to get passed on and updated at my school, and help kids who are in my position. I was thinking about rewriting it as a generic guide for students from small LACs and especially not well known regional LACs. I have a few questions to this end: Do people think that's a good idea, and would be helpful on a site like this? Are there people that would be interested in adding to it, if I posted a draft? And, if there are any mods around, would you be open to making this a sticky so it's easy to find for people like me?

I am currently a first-year humanities PhD student. My university is ranked #1 for economics. It turns out that I also get significant leeway as to what I can do as a humanities PhD, including taking several courses in economics and mathematics. Lately I've been thinking about going back into economics, as there is not a lot that I can do with my humanities degree. In my undergraduate career, I took linear algebra and multivariable calculus, as well as a few courses in economics. I was thinking of enrolling in some economics and math courses for the next 2 years (undergraduate as well as graduate) and hopefully finding a research position and then applying to PhD programs in economics again. What do you all think / how should I proceed?

Hello all, I was wondering how a B in Differential Equations will be considered when applying for PhD/RA-Ship. I was close to getting an A but unfortunately ended up with a B+ (which led to a B since my school doesn't have +/- system.). Just as a reference, I've struggled a lot in the beginning but managed to get straight A's in the math courses that I have taken the past two semesters, including: Real Analysis I and II, Abstract Algebra, Proof-based Linear Algebra, Mathematical Probability, Topology, Linear Programming, and Combinatorics I took it about a year ago, and I was thinking about taking Measure Theory since it includes difference equations so I was wondering whether it will be a good sign if I get an A in this course despite the B in Diff Eq. Please let me know what your thoughts are!

I have looked course lists and got questions on mathematical stats 1 course. It seems quite hard one as it uses Shao’s book. How did you find this course in terms of difficulty. I was thinking of studying Simon&Blume Math for economists, De La Fuente math book and intro to mathematical stats by Hogg only. Should I go for more math and stats textbooks to follow the course without any problems?
