  1. Hi guys I hope you are doing well. I have taken the TOEFL 10 days ago. I got 99 : 28 L, 28 R, 22 S, 21 R . Are they kidding me? I really need 100 to apply to my college. Should I rescore my writing or my speaking or both. Do I have a good opportunity to jump to 100? Did anyone here have an experiment with such law score in writing or speaking that pumped up one or more point ? I really need your help. Thanks.
  2. Hello everyone! Zebra Education Inc has decided to provide free material to a few TOEFL Forums. iBT TOEFL Speaking 1: Question: Where Is Your Favourite Place To Study? Describe This Place And Say Why It Is A Good Place For You To Study. Answer: We attempted to post a zip file containing the audio file with the Native English answer, but the file size was too large. We hope this is not against the forum rules and if it is please contact us so we can discuss other alternatives. The below link simply links to a black screen with the audio file. http://www.toeflnetwork.com/system/files/toefl_speaking_1/Q1A41.mp3 Enjoy!
  3. For Question #2 on the TOEFL iBT Speaking Section, you need to choose between one of two options, and support your choice with specific details, reasons, or examples. Question #2 is very similar to Question #1, in the following ways: You create the content, no paraphrasing other material. You use your own personal ideas and opinions for support. It is independent, you don't read or listen to anything before responding. You have 15 seconds to prepare, and 45 seconds to respond. The same type of introduction and language can be used (in general). However, Question #2 is a bit different from Question #1 in some ways: Your choice is limited to one of two ideas, possibly a combination of both, or neither of the two (in some cases). You need to use comparitive language (i.e. better, more convenient, etc.), whereas in question #1, you used superlative language (i.e. best, most convenient, etc.) You have an easy way to support your choice with two main ideas - the first one is the main reason you made your choice, and the second one can be a reason why you don't like the other choice. Based on this, we can use the same basic blueprint, or template, for question #2 with a few minor adjustments. 1) The Introduction “I prefer X over Y, because of two (or three) main reasons – A, B, [and C].” You may replace “I prefer X over Y…” with: “To me, X is better (more interesting, more important, etc.) than Y…” “I’d say that…” “In my opinion,…” “I believe…” 2) The Body “Regarding A, I’d say that it is/was ______ (comparative adjective, i.e. more important, easier, etc.) because… “As for B, then I believe…” “And finally, C is, to me, (more important, easier, less harmful)…” If you cannot think of support for your answer, here's a great tip: Support your choice in Question #2 with one reason in favor of your choice (the first reason that comes to mind), and one reason for not choosing the other choice! 3) The Conclusion “For these reasons, I feel that…” (Restate your original opinion in different words.) Remember to keep it simple and clear, connecting your ideas, using language you are comfortable with. Here is a sample of how the blueprint above can be used. Question: Do you prefer attending large classes or smaller ones? Use specific reasons to support your choice. Response: I prefer attending small classes over larger ones, for two main reasons - Access to the professor and the ability to focus. Access to course instructors, especially experts in their fields, is an invaluable part of the university experience. In small classes, you get many more opportunities to ask questions, and the professor can even help you with your specific research if he doesn't have 100 students expecting the same attention. Another reason I feel small classes are better is the ability to concentrate on the lectures more easily. In large classes, there are just too many people and too many distractions, like cellphones, chatting, and people entering and exiting. These are the reasons why I prefer small classes. I timed this response at exactly 45 seconds. The total time allowed for a response to this question type is exactly 45 seconds.
  4. A student asked me about something mentioned in the Princeton Review's Cracking the TOEFL iBT (p.327 of the 2011 ed.): The "characteristics" referred to here are the three main points of the lecture in the example given. I'm very worried about this statement, as it seems to indicate that you can just talk until the end of the time limit, without mentioning all the main ideas in the lecture, and without properly concluding your response, and that's no problem. Comparing this to the emphasis ETS places on the completion of the task and its organization, I'm afraid that according to the ETS rubrics, this kind of response would only earn a 3 out of 4 at best, with a missing or partially developed main idea. I know that a conclusion for a #4 response is not so important, but a missing main idea?! Looking forward to some valuable input from the TOEFL teachers here. Thanks in advance.
  5. I'm a little worried that the claimed changes in the TOEFL Speaking Section may not be what some are claiming. Let me be clear: I am referring to the claim that Question #1 has become limited to a set number of choices and is no longer an open, free choice. Moreover, it has the added difficulty of including a negative meaning, like: Which of the following activities would you least like to do on your weekend outing...A, B, C, or D? And why? And a similar added difficulty to Question #2 is also claimed. I'm worried that these are not actually changes in the format of the Speaking Section. I feel they may be - quite simply - a more difficult question that comes under the generality of what is expected on those question types. I mean, not all TOEFL tests are equal in terms of level of difficulty. There is a small level of variation in difficulty in all four sections. I am afraid that someone may have observed some difficult questions, and jumped the gun a bit by assuming that the TOEFL format has changed. I suggest this because of the following ideas: It doesn't seem widely reported. I teach the TOEFL speaking questions according to the ETS guide, and my students say that the questions come as they expected, no surprises. ETS has not made any announcement about this, while they have announced some changes recently. Looking for some valuable input from TOEFL teachers... (Thanks in advance!)
  6. I know one day, I will get S26 ...:hmm:... but if there are tricks and ideas that helped you to pass or you tried several times to get it right, please let me know. I once got S26 but W21 ... now got the tricks to pass writing but speaking stays at 24. Can't figure it out! 13th May I did bad: I got S24, 14th May I did good: I got S24. 08th July I did ok: I got S24... hmmm Thanks in advance!
  7. I want to take a TOEFL test next summer. I'm looking for people who will take it at that time. This is one note I wrote in my Facebook, I'm gonna post it here so you can read it: Hi guys! I want to create a TOEFL & IELTS speaking group on skype. If you wanna join this group (group N1), read this: 1. The group consists of 4-6 members whose level is upper-intermediate or higher. (For now, there're 2 members. When I have 3 or 4 more, we'll act.) 2. You have free time. We talk once a week on Sunday or Saturday at 20:00 in Vietnam. We continue until August or September next year. If sometimes you're busy, you need to inform us before Friday. For more than 2 times being absent without no word, you'll be removed from the group. 3. Topics we talk about are those used in the TOEFL or IELTS exams. I'll send you a topic each week or we all will agree to what topics to be used. You will also suggest your ideas. You must take responsibility. 4. For guys who haven't given me any information, you need to give me these: 1- Name: (in latin) 2- Skype: 3- Email address: 4- Facebook: 5- Country, city and time zone: 6- Level of English: Free time and English level are fixed as Sat./Sun. and upper-inter./higher. You can find my Facebook using the username hocnoitienganh. This is not my Skype ID or email, it's just the username on Facebook. When you add me to your FB, you must also send me a private message including this necessary information. (Do NOT post your contact information here - in this forum!) 5. If you wanna join this group, please comment on this note to register (of course this group is for upper-inter. or higher level). Being a member of this group (group 1), you must take responsibility for it. (You'll find this note when you're already in my list of friends) ---------------- If someone whose level meets the requirement doesn't wanna join this group, he/she can still talk in the previous group (let's call it group 2). The group N2 talk on Sunday if the first one talk on Saturday or Saturday if the first - Sunday. ---------------------------------------- Please look for my facebook and do what I say above. Do not post your information here because they may delete this thread! Thank you guys!
  8. Hi there TestMagic members, I was wondering if I could ask for some help and advice from pharmacy applicants out there who are experienced with the TOEFL speaking format and would like to contribute to a new practice tool. One of the problems for pharmacy applicants is that the TOEFL does not reflect the content and skills needed and used in the pharmacy profession. I think it could be a valuable introductory preparation tool if we create a practice TOEFL speaking section test that features pharmacy-related content. I can arrange the writing, formatting and professional recording of scripts, and I can make this practice test freely available online for all test takers. However, I need your specialized help to develop the content! So, can you come up with pharmacy-related topics and problems that could be featured in a TOEFL speaking test? We need pharmacy-related content for: Question 1 - Open choice question Question 2 - Closed choice (or agree/disagree) question Question 3 - A notice, a pharmacist's opinion in reaction to the notice, and the pharmacist's reasons for that opinion Question 4 - A pharmacy-related theory (for reading), and then that theory demonstrated in actual practice (for a lecture) Question 5 - A problem experienced by a pharmacist, with some suggestions from a colleague or senior Question 6 - An extended pharmacy-related theory or issue for a lecture I hope you will get involved and make some suggestions here using your pharmacy knowledge and background. This sort of practice test could be a valuable tool (and confidence builder) for pharmacy applicants, to demonstrate the format and requirements of the TOEFL speaking section by using content they are familiar with (or should reasonably know). The actual TOEFL might be just that little bit less intimidating for these people as a result - who knows? Please go ahead and post your content suggestions here in response to this thread. When I format the actual practice test, contributors to the content will be credited in the final version. As I mentioned, this is intended to be a free resource, so let's get together as an online community and try to make it happen. Best wishes to you all, ~ Jason Renshaw
