  1. Hi all: Does anyone have any insights on the econ phd programs at UCI vs UCSD? And how is living in Irvine vs La Jolla? My research actually fits UCI better, but UCSD is ranked higher maybe because they have lots of distinguished professors (not that UCI doesn't have any either)? I like that UCI funds all students 100% for 5 years guaranteed, and UCSD despite being very rich doesn't offer that (75% of first years are funded and after that only partial is guaranteed). I noted that La Jolla is expensive (Irvine too) and maybe kind of boring? Admissions to UCI appears to be approx. 30% while UCSD is much lower around 12-15% at best, not 100% sure my numbers are correct. I took the virtual campus tour on both of their websites, and favored UCI. What are some ideas you have about these two schools?
  2. If you could sort the following into Top-10/20/30/50/etc, how would you do so? USC UCLA Stanford Berkeley UCSD UCSB UC Davis UC Irvine Rice Virginia UT-Austin Texas A&M Duke UNC
  3. Hey guys, I got an offer from UCSD econ. To those who are already at UCSD or know someone there, I was just wondering how is the program overall? Do you like it there, hiw hard is the first year and the qualifying exams, and how is the 2nd year metrics sequence, etc? Any information about the program is much appreciated. Thanks!
  4. I accepted my offer for MS in Mechanical Engineering at UCSD because of the April 15 Deadline I have only one choice at that time. Today, I just got an offer from Northwestern in the same program specialisation in energy & sustainability. I really can't decide whether which one is better for finding job opportunities afterward.
  5. So I have two options that I am considering right now. I have a PhD offer from UCSD that would pay about 20k/yr with a readership/ta position after the first year. I also am considering the "MA" track at Brown (which, from what I gather, is a way to get around the promise of full funding to all PhD students, I'd have to pay 50% tuition + living expenses), whereby after the first year I would receive full funding and be in the normal PhD program (about ~29k/yr). Now, considering my interests in micro theory and development, Brown is the more appealing program without considering funding. Of course, I'd be more than happy to go to UCSD, and I consider myself lucky to have admits this cycle since I really limited myself by only applying T20 (I had very unrealistic expectations). I am unsure if I should actually be considering the Brown program, and am very conflicted. I intend on visiting both schools, but I'd like to start weighing my options as soon as possible.
  6. Hi everyone, Now I have to make a decision between these two schools. Both are good so it is a hard decision. Wisc guarantees my funding for the first four years (TA). UCSD guarantees my funding for the last four years(TA). However, UCSD is now considering augmenting my funding package and most students can work as Summer RA in the first two summers with a salary of $4000 in each summer. My interests are metrics, macro and finance, and I do not like micro theory. But I am an undergraduate student now and many people tell me that it is likely to change interests in the first year. It seems Wisc is rising. They hired Randy Wright, Dean Corbae, Sorensen, Hendricks. They also have Durlauf, West, Hansen and Engle.... I guess Wisc is strong in Labor, IO, macro, international and metrics. However, I heard that the program is very tough, and Madison is very cold in winter...Moreover, the placements in recent years seems not that good. UCSD's metrics is very good, though White passed away and Guggenberger is leaving. I think I can receive rigorous training in metrics there. For finance, there is Allan Timmermann; for empirical macro, they have Jim Hamilton and Valerie Ramey...Many Econ PHD students at UCSD say that the program is very good, the environment is friendly and they are satisfied with life there. However, it seems UCSD is trapped in financial problems, and it doesn't hire any seniors.....Moreover, Macro at UCSD is also weaker than Wisc. I would appreciate it very much if you could provide some information or give me some advice. Thank you!
  7. After much deliberation I chose UCSD over UCLA for a PhD in CS. But now I am feeling regretful... just wondering if someone out there can make me feel any better by giving some reasons why UCSD's CS PhD is better than UCLA's... Also, I have thought of applying again next year in hopes of getting readmitted to UCLA, or another higher ranked school. My stats: GPA: 3.66, double math and cs major (but 3.89 for last 2 years of a 3 year program, and 3.94 CS GPA) Have a previous degree from a liberal arts college Interned at Harvard, MIT, NASA Have published papers in biology, physics, philosophy, and wrote ACT math questions for a well regarded published prep-book need to retake the GRE but I know I can get 5.5 writing, 166 verbal, hopefully 170 math But so far people have told me that I probably wouldn't get into a much higher ranked school than UCSD.
  8. Thought I'd have this on the record, and perhaps get some recommendations about where to hang out around here to for the most learning and contribution ASAP. I'm a recent grad from UCSD's Rady School of Management (Full-time 2011) I'm working in marketing at an exciting start-up. I love my job, but I don't think industry is the right fit for me in the long-term, so I'm looking into PhD programs in a couple years. There are two reasons I'm here early: 1) I don't know what I want to study yet exactly 2) I don't have an ideal academic background, so I want to spend the next few years doing things that will prepare me to get into, contribute to, and succeed in a PhD program. This forum looks like a great place, I'm looking forward to learning and sharing. I'm totally new at the PhD hunt, but I've done the whole B-School thing (& interned with admissions) and will happily share about that. Feel free to link to a related thread. Cheers!
  9. I just finished the UCSD flyout and wanted to start a thread for attendees to post their impressions and things they learned. Here are some of mine: 1) There was an impressively cooperative/colleagial atmosphere, both among students and between students and profs. 2) They have really expanded their development program in recent years, both in dedicated faculty and other faculty with development interests. 3) No one seemed overly down about the financial health of the department or the ability to keep junior or senior faculty. 4) I think overall attrition is about 1/3 (if anyone has better info, please correct!), but across the board people said it was really never due to failed comps. Apparently most people pass by the second try, but they are very accommodating of people who want to continue. 5) Development, environment, and conflict seem to be some of the better-funded topics at the moment (I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I heard about). There are also options for working with profs at Rady and IRPS. 6) They are working on a placement list that shows the primary and additional fields associated with placements. 7) There is probably some room to negotiate funding if you present your other offers. 8) Grad students said that TA work is generally light, especially for 1st years, and most thought the stipend is livable. 9) The grad student housing most available is the furnished "single grad housing" on campus or 1 Miramar nearby. The others seem to have long waits. Most students live in grad student housing their first year. 10) Two of my favorite presentations were Berman and Andreoni. I left wanting to do behavioral lab work and conflict. :) 11) They said there is a fairly even split between people taking five and six years to finish. 12) There's obviously a major selection issue with which grad students show up for recruitment activities, but everyone I talked to seemed really happy with the program. And the weather, of course. I'll add more as it comes to mind, and hopefully others will add more substantial comments on research and profs they talked to.
