About Me

My Target Scores

  1. I have a few offers at this point, and I am having a hard time evaluating my options. Feedback and opinions from other applicants and graduate students will help me make an educated choice, so please let me know what you think my best course of action would be. Any information about the programs below, regarding placements, learning environment, interaction with faculty, funding, etc. is very welcome. I think current graduate students will be able to offer a lot of insight. I am mainly interested in microeconomic theory, specifically applications of game theory to economics. I am not going to go into more detail here. Admissions: 1. Autonomous University of Barcelona (IDEA program, will have to pay tuition, awarded a stipend for the first year) 2. Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Economics program, no tuition waiver) 3. Pennsylvania State University (Ph.D., waitlisted for funding) 4. Stockholm School of Economics (Ph.D., full funding) Pending: 1. Tilburg University 2. Bocconi University 3. Paris School of Economics (M1 track) 4. University of California- Santa Barbara 5. London School of Economics (EME program) On a peripheral note, there are deadlines to accept some of the offers I have. But all my results are not in yet. In such a scenario, what does an applicant usually do? Thank you.
  2. I've been looking for some advice regarding my current profile as I prepare for PhD applications. I'm planning to apply for Fall 2022 admissions. My goal is to narrow down or add to (if necessary) the schools I'll be applying to. Thank you for your feedback in advance. Profile: Degree: B.S. Economics with a minor in Mathematics from Utah State University GPA: 3.70/4.00Econ Courses: Principles of Micro (A), Principles of Macro (B), Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A), Applied Econometrics (A). Math Courses: Calculus I (A), Calculus II (A-), Calculus III (currently enrolled, but I have an A- which could change to an A), Linear Algebra (A-). I'm taking Differential Equations and Probability Theory in the fall. Additionally, I'm taking Foundations of Analysis and Mathematical Statistics in the spring. GRE: Will take in the fall. LOR's: one from my Applied Econometrics professor, not a well-known professor. One from my Development Economics professor who I've done research for and bounced ideas off of, graduate of Yale. Also, not famous. One from my Mathematical Economics professor who can attest to my mathematical ability and research ideas. He's also not well-known. There really aren't many popular economists at Utah State University. Research Experience: Worked on application of Malthusian model to colonial Haiti. Additionally, I used Bayesian econometrics in an effort to predict stock market returns. Research Interests: Labor, Development, Macroeconomics, and Economic History (only at some universities because many don't offer this emphasis). Planning to apply to: University of Illinois University of Notre Dame Purdue University Texas A&M University University of Colorado Boulder University of Arizona University of California - Irvine University of Oregon University of Kansas Vanderbilt University Concerns: My GPA is nothing stellar. I attended a community college two years prior to attending Utah State where my GPA was 3.33/4.00. My Utah State GPA on the other hand is 3.95/4.00. Additionally, I have four W's on my transcript from dropped courses. I dropped Linear Algebra, Calc II, Differential Equations, and a history general. I dropped Linear Algebra and Calc II because my wife was very sick during the start of her pregnancy and I needed to be more available. I ended up taking both in a later semester and received an A- in both. I dropped Differential Equations and my history class this summer because I found I overloaded myself with the birth of my daughter. However, I plan to take Differential Equations this fall and the history class again in the spring. None of the research I've contributed to has been published. I also feel like I have weak research experience as a whole. However, I have spent the last six months as a data analyst for the company I work for (not sure if this adds to my profile). I'm also concerned about the classes I'm taking in the fall and spring not being on my transcript given the application deadline for some of the schools I have in mind is prior to the end of the fall semester. I might be overthinking this given schools can admit you provisionally. Thank you so much for reviewing my profile. I look forward to your advice.
  3. Hi! I’m applying to a variety of PhD programs this year.
  4. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: First Class Honours Economics and Minor Mathematics at a Top 3 Canadian University Undergrad GPA: 3.54/4.0, 3.8/4.0 for Econ Type of Grad: NA Grad GPA: N/A Predoc: At another T3 Canadian University with relatively well known, albeit younger profs. GRE: 168 Quant (92nd percentile), 166 Verbal (97th percentile), 5.0 writing (92nd percentile) Math Courses: Calc 3 (D, B+, I'll explain later), Differential equations ©, Linear Algebra 1 (B+), Honours Linear Algebra 2 (A), Intro to Statistics (A), Probability (A), Statistics (A), Analysis I (A). Econ Courses (grad-level that I took as an undergrad): Game Theory (A-), Micro I (B+) Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Honours Intermediate Micro (A-), Honours Intermediate Macro (B+), Honours Intermediate Stats (A-), Honours Econometrics I (A); Honours Econometrics II (A), Honours Advanced Micro (A), Honours Advanced Macro (A); various econ courses outside the core classes, some honours some not (All A- or A). Other Courses: Foundations of Programming (A), Intro to Computer Science (A) Research Experience: two internships in economic policy with well known think tanks in Washington DC, part time RA for labour economist while in Undergrad, part time RA for a different labour economist at another institution during undergrad and summer after undergrad, part time RA on NBER project summer after undergrad, Predoc at a different top 3 Canadian University. Letters of Recommendation: All from professors I've been an RA for. Two have published decently however are quite young, another is more senior. Research Interests: Primarily in Urban, but also interested in Public and Applied Micro in general SOP: Going to talk about realizing my late interest in graduate economics in tandem with my upward performance in my grades. My GPA is bad because I wasn't very focused on school at the start. I started my undergrad as a geography student and got bad grades in those courses, the gen-ed freshman courses, and the math courses. I switched into econ 2nd year, enjoyed it, and started taking school more seriously and have gotten significantly better grades since (3.33 average for first two vs 3.84 average for final two years). Additionally, I got straight As in the math courses I took in the latter half of my degree (Honours LinAlg 2, Analysis, Probability, and Statistics) vs the B+ and C I got in the first half in Calc 3 and ODEs. Other: Deans list, 2019/2020 academic year. Received an award for being the graduating student with the highest academic standing in the economics department. Applying to: Would love some advice as to the caliber of school I should be applying to, open to anywhere in US, Canada, or Europe. A very tentative list would be Reaches: University of Pennsylvania, NYU, Columbia, Brown, UCLA, UCSD, Oxford Target: University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, USC, UC Irvine, Boston University, Queens, University, Maryland, UCL, Toulouse School of Economics, Georgetown, University of Washington. Safety: McGill University, University of Pittsburgh, CU Boulder, George Washington University. Is that list realistic? Should I shoot higher/lower? Are there other places I should look at specific to my research interests? Thanks in advance!
  5. Hey everyone, I am a first year at the University of Virginia and am hoping to a PhD in economics. The main problem I am having is I feel that there is very little support for me at this university, for example: the vast majority of resources seem to be devoted to our business school, I am unable to assist in or conduct any research until my third year, and there is only one economics related club. In only a few weeks, I have made a few connections with the top economics professors at our university and feel that letters of recommendations from them will not be too hard to get. I am very motivated, have already taken high level math classes, but it seems like I could excel much more if given the proper opportunities. I few options I have been considering that aren't too far out of reach include: Northwestern, Georgetown, Cornell, Berkeley, UPenn, and Columbia. I have lots of other extracurriculars I am very excited about, but none of them are quantitative and all of these other universities have vastly more assistance for econ majors. I am hoping to get into a top 10 PhD program and was wondering how beneficial/hurtful transferring to another university would be. Thanks in advance.
  6. Test Scores (GRE) - 160+ (V/Q) [based on two unofficial tests and 1 month prep] Undegrad GPA: 3.67/4 Graduate GPA: N/A Research Experience: PG Diploma in Liberal Arts (The program has some research component) Teaching Experience: Peer Tutoring and Mentoring in UG Work Experience: 1.5 Years in Big 4 Advisory Concentration Applying to: Supply Chain/Operations Number of programs planned to apply to: 9 Dream Schools: MIT,USC, U of Toronto Other Questions: I am not sure if I should first pursue a MSc in Sustainability/Business with a research focus to improve my chances to get into a good program What made you want to pursue a PhD? I want to pursue a career in academic research specifically in circular supply chains. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? Assuming I have good/great letters and a solid research proposal What would be a good path for me to make a competitive profile for the following programs – Cornell University (Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (incl. Dyson)) Duke University (The Fuqua School of Business) Harvard University (Harvard Business School) Indiana University at Bloomington (Kelley School of Business) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (Sloan School of Management) Northwestern University (Kellogg School of Management) University of California at Los Angeles (Anderson School of Management) University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Ross School of Business) University of Minnesota at Twin Cities (Carlson School of Management) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler Business School) University of Southern California (Marshall School of Business (incl. Leventhal)) University of Toronto (Joseph L. Rotman School of Management) Thank You

  9. I got admits from 1. University of Florida Gainsville with scholarship of 4.5K dollars 2. Indiana University, Bloomington 3. Iowa State University I need your help in deciding the pros and cons. Suggestions of sort
  10. Hello everyone. I am a 3rd year student at Università Bocconi, and I am currently in exchange at Cornell. Due to a misunderstanding and lack of time I have missed the assignments (which means I will get an F) for a course that won't be recognized by my home university (hence it will not appear on my transcript at Bocconi). Will this affect my future prospects as a PhD candidate?
  11. Hi, Does anyone have any information about the program? I have been accepted and am looking forward to connect with people to understand more about the university.
  12. Hey there, looking for some advice if I should revise my list of PhD programs I'm planning to apply to. Want to know if I'm shooting too high/low or if there's some other schools I need to consider within my range. I completed undergrad in May, have been working full time to pay off student loans, delayed applying to grad schools to se if I'd be interested in the corporate world first. Decided I do want to pursue academia. Majors: Economics & Statistics (Large public, T100 Econ) GPA: 3.27 GRE:168Q, 160V, 4.5A Math: Calc I-III(A,A,C+), Linear Algebra(A), Differential Equations(A), Adv. I know my deficiencies are GPA and lack of research. Any of these that are moonshots and not worth the app fee? Any programs I should consider? My main criteria is being able to get funding and decent research interests match. Thanks!
  13. Hi all! I will finish my Master in Economics from a good university in Germany (one of Mannheim / Munich / Bonn) next year and will try to get placed into a Top 20 PhD Program. I also did my Bachelor in Economics at one of those universities. I'm especially interested in how the selection committees will review my application regarding the grades... In Germany, grades are usally (much) worse than in the US (only around 0.5% of students receive the highest GPA (1.0) in economics). Is there anything which I should pay attention to?
  14. Hi Everyone, Dick Startz provided a great public good by putting together an AEA session that you might find helpful. Here is the summary: The American Economic Association will present a webinar at 3:00 pm EST on Friday, January 8, 2021 where a panel will present information intended to help faculty help their students place into PhD programs in economics. The webinar is cosponsored by the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP), the Committee on the Status of Minorities in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP), and the Committee on Economic Education (CEE) with an eye toward increasing and diversifying the pool of applicants. The webinar will begin with a panel presentation followed by questions from the audience. Panel members will be John List (University of Chicago), James Peoples (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Nancy Rose (MIT), Danila Serra (Texas A&M), and Dick Startz (University of California-Santa Barbara). I found the discussion wonderful, and I hope educational for all of you. I mention the session because I believe that it was taped but cannot seem to find that link just yet. Good luck this season! Best, JL
  15. University of Chicago mourns loss of PhD student Yiran Fan | University of Chicago News As much as I’d like to go to the best university that I can get into, this incident has made me wonder if the safety of a city should be part of my utility function when deciding where to go. I’m not too sure if these incidents have now become normalized for Americans and so they don’t pay much attention to them, but to me it’s shocking that something like this can happen right outside a university that’s apparently one of the best in the world. Which other dangerous cities like Chicago should us international students be avoiding completely when deciding where to go for our PhDs?
  16. Thank you for any help and suggestions that you can give!

  20. Hi everyone, I'm applying for PhD programs for this upcoming cycle and would like some feedback on the schools I'm applying to and maybe some recommendations on where to apply to given my profile. I'd really appreciate any help. Profile: Type of Undergrad: Top 25 USNWR (general, not econ) Undergrad GPA: 3.62 Type of Grad: NA Grad GPA: NA GRE: 168 Q 164 V 5.5 W Math Courses(list the grades for each course): Calc 1: B Calc 2: A- Intro to stats: A- Multivariable Calc: B Linear Algebra: B+ Foundations of math (proof writing class): A- Differential Equations: B+ Nonlinear optimization: A Mathematical Economics: B Probability and Statistics: A Real analysis: Got a C first time, but currently retaking at a different school, projected to get an A Econ Courses Undergrad(list the grades for each course): Princ. of Micro: A- Princ. of Macro: A- Intermediate Micro: A Intermediate Macro: A Prob and Stat for Economists: B+ Econometrics: A Money and Banking: A Money and Banking (this was a separate course with the same name I took abroad): A Economic Forecasting: A- Econ Courses Msc(list the grades for each course): NA Other Courses: Don't think these are relevant, but I was also a polisci major and got mostly A/A-s in my courses. Letters of Recommendation: One from former econ professor, used to be very high up in one of the federal reserve banks. Another from a professor I TA'd for and also helped a little with research. Last one from a math professor whose class I did well in and likes me. I expect all three to be pretty good letters, the first will likely be great since he really likes me and is tailoring his letters. Research Experience: Was an undergraduate research fellow in the political science department, co-wrote a study I presented with a partner at a small conference, helped a professor I TA'd for a little with his research (mostly just coding data). Will be doing research at my current job (data analyst) soon (I hope) on unique data. Teaching Experience: Was a TA for intermediate microeconomics, as well as a course in labor economics (did not really teach in this role, but made the class slides) Other (Notes, concerns etc.): Schools on my list right now are University of Washington, University of Notre Dame, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Syracuse University, University of California Irvine, University of Southern California, and University of Colorado Boulder. I'd really appreciate any insights into how competitive I am to get in (with full funding) at these programs, and also recommendations of other programs I should apply to. I'm mostly interested in labor and history, but political economy and macro are interesting to me too if that makes a difference. Thanks a lot
  21. Hello, I'm looking to apply for a PhD Econ or PPOL program this year, and I've whittled down a list of appx. 30 programs for application. Based on my profile, I'd love both a standard 'chances' eval, as well as some recommendations for programs I should absolutely cut from my list (ie. my profile isn't good enough). 22. Hello all, what is the general perception/impression of the economics department at the University of Georgia? What is it known for? How is their placement compared to other similar departments?
  23. Hello all, I came to the U.S. for master's in 2017, and I got a five-year, multiple entry F1 visa that is valid till June 2022. I returned to my home country after the master's in July 2019. I was wondering if I could still use the same F1 visa for my PhD for Fall 2020, after getting a new SEVIS number and I-20 and paying for the new SEVIS number, or whether I should apply for a new visa altogether. I sent an email to both my previous university and my upcoming PhD university, and replies from both the sources were that I can use the same F1 visa, if it has not expired yet, given I pay for the new SEVIS ID fee. However, to officially confirm one last time, I emailed the US Embassy in my home country. They asked for my passport and scanned copies of old and new I-20s, and responded, "As you have already completed the course and applying for another program, you should apply for new visa." I again asked my previous and new university officials, and they again stood by their former response, and gave the number of the director, if there is any problem during immigration. Do you think the person from the embassy has mistaken the situation a bit? Since the embassy is closed (or at least not accepting visa appointments) right now, it would be an immense relief for me if I could use my previous F1 visa, so that I could just fly as soon as international flights resume. I look forward to hearing your thoughts... Thanks so much!
