While development of the wilderness is intended for economic gain, overuse leads to negative consequences for both the environment and economic development itself. Therefore, wilderness preservation should be protected by law against harmful economic development. Economic development of the wilderness usually involves significant overuse or destruction of natural resources. A prime example is the rampant deforestation of South American rain forests. In an attempt to boost the economy through timber sales and building developments, the rainforests are being decimated at an alarming rate. While natural resources, such as timber, are considered renewable, large-scale reforestation is not possible when houses and buildings occupy the space where dense forests once grew. Furthermore, the deforestation in the name of economic growth is so wide-spread that regrowth would require hundreds of years. Without proper controls, this type of development leads to continual destruction of wilderness with no replacement of the natural resources. Continual consumption of natural resources may provide short-term economic gain, however, unchecked use will inevitably lead to global depletion of natural resources. Protection of natural resources is important for preventing economic loss. Economic development heavily depends on the use of natural resources. Timber from forests is used for housing; steel for business complexes requires mining from the earth; clothing factories require cotton plants; and global fuel depends on natural fuel reserves. Because economic development demands the use of natural resources, the protection of the land that produces such resources is vital. Deforestation of parts of the South American rainforest for new housing and businesses is only economically beneficial as long as significant areas of the rainforest are preserved. Ideally, tension between preservation and development could be mitigated by encouraging development that retains as many natural land fixtures as possible. Furthermore, protecting areas programs such as areas of intentional reforestation would allow for resource renewal. In summary, economic development is only economically beneficial if restrained from a trajectory of natural resource depletion. Wilderness preservation, renewal efforts such as reforestation, and developments that retain nature are modes by which to promote healthy use of natural resources.
