The end of undergrad is rapidly approaching for me and this means that I now need to actually figure out what I want to do with myself. So far I've been involved with the economics department at my school (T20 Econ T10 PPol) and have been able to get a bit of research experience under my belt along with the expected math/econ courses as well as another major in philosophy, though I realize that will mean very little its just something I enjoy. I've been looking a lot into the paths required to end up at a good Econ grad program however I have lately been much more interested in public policy for various reasons. I was wondering what the main functional differences in the programs would be between Econ and PPol (also potentially Political Econ) and if one is typically easier to get into e.g HKS vs Harvard Econ. In terms of placements I see that some of the top PPol programs have sent people to top tier Econ departments and I was wondering how realistic of a path that is. Would my econ background help because it shows I have the ability to do relatively quantitative research or would it hurt since it seems I'm not focused on policy? Also, any tips on how I would go about deciding which is right for me? Thanks!

Hey guys I'm a master student in Economics and want to do a PhD after I graduate. I have the opportunity to apply for a RA but it's not in Economics but in Political Science (Negotiation Management). I haven't worked as a RA so far and was wondering if doing one in political science will still be useful when it comes to applying for my PhD? Thanks for your help!

Are there any top universities/academic programs (summer only) which take on undergraduate students who do not attend that institution as research assistants? Or are there any suggestions of how to make the best use of the summer before my senior year? (I've actually already taken my GRE, for those who are wondering). This is perhaps less pertinent for me, as I attend a Top 40 school and have a good deal of connections and opportunities at my institution. I do have a friend at an unranked public university who will significantly benefit from your advice.

Thinking about applying to Haas next year and was wondering if anyone knows their stipend. I have heard pretty negative things about Berkeley's econ financial aid and was wondering if the business school was in the same situation.

Hi All, I was recently admitted to Rutgers with funding, but I've read a some concerning posts regarding the program over on GC and EJR (especially regarding funding and attrition). I was wondering if anyone here had any first or second hand knowledge regarding these topics that they'd be willing to share, other than what is out there on the internet. Separately, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how these programs might stack up against the Ag Econ programs at MSU and Purdue. Thanks!

Hi all, visit days are coming up and I was wondering if anyone else was nervous. I have been invited to a few visit days but for two of them i am either waitlisted or admitted but waitlisted for funding. I was wondering if anyone has any insight on what usually visit days tend to be (and how formal or informal meetings with faculty might be), because I'm slightly nervous.

Out of curiosity, to the current grad students here, how useful is the first year metrics sequence to doing empirical research? I've heard that PhD metrics is pretty theoretical, and I was wondering if that hindered people from using it in empirical work.

Hello, I have just received an invitation for an interview from one of the programs I applied to. Although the email sounded very positive, I don't think that it is an official offer of admission and that I could still be rejected. What I was wondering is that if this is normal because I've never heard of interviews being part of the admissions process for Ph.D in Economics. I am happy that at least I've managed to be selected for the interview process but wondering at the same if some students would have been accepted already without the interview process. It would be of great help if anyone who knows anything about the process could give any insights and advice on preparing for the interview eg. what kind of questions I might get asked. Thank you all.

I'm just coming up to end of math camp and have to say that its been very stressful so far for all of us. I'm at a school with very strict comp requirements so I was wondering if the elder business PhDs here who had to take econ comps in the first year dealt with the stress of the 1st year.

Hello all, I was wondering how a B in Differential Equations will be considered when applying for PhD/RA-Ship. I was close to getting an A but unfortunately ended up with a B+ (which led to a B since my school doesn't have +/- system.). Just as a reference, I've struggled a lot in the beginning but managed to get straight A's in the math courses that I have taken the past two semesters, including: Real Analysis I and II, Abstract Algebra, Proof-based Linear Algebra, Mathematical Probability, Topology, Linear Programming, and Combinatorics I took it about a year ago, and I was thinking about taking Measure Theory since it includes difference equations so I was wondering whether it will be a good sign if I get an A in this course despite the B in Diff Eq. Please let me know what your thoughts are!

Hi everyone! I'm an aspiring Ph.D. applicant and this is my first time posting here. I wanted to ask you guys about your experiences approaching professors for an RA position. I've seen a lot of tips about how to ask for an RA job, but almost all of them are for science/engineering majors where professors regularly recruit students for their labs. I was just wondering what would be the best way to ask a business school professor whether he/she needs an RA. Any advice can help! Thank you guys so much!
